Nano renamed itself to " Trashe~1 " Trashed

It's since been replaced, but last week I was updating my 4G Nano to version 1.2.
My PC hung so I had to force quit.
While it was shut down I removed the iPod only to notice that it appeared to be empty.
I went to settings>about where I noticed that it was showing as version 1.2 and that there were only 5 Megs free despite all the menus being empty.
The hilarious part is that my iPod was now named "Trashe~1".
The next time I tried to connect the iPod it showed up in "My Computer" as "Portable Music Player" rather than as an iPod and iTunes and the iPod updater wouldn't recognise it.
I tried plugging it into my Mac. The Mac recognised it but when I ran the iPod updater it would just hang.
Has anyone seen this before or knows what causes this?
I was thinking virus but my PC scans clean with McAfee, Norton, Spybot, a2 etc.
I even took it to the shop and they say it's clean too.
I've since replaced the iPod (with a 60G ) so I don't need a fix I'm just really curious.

My hard drive renamed itself ??

I booted my macbook up this morning and instead of saying 'macbook HD' all it has is a ']' symbol. I looked and it says it was last modified a couple months ago when I put a new hard drive in. So it doesn't say it was just modified. I'm so confused. My camera was also on when I booted it up. I had to completely turn it off to get it to turn off. Rebooting it didn't turn it off.
Is something wrong with my computer? Why did it rename itself?

Try resetting your SMC, trash your Finder preferences and reboot.

External HDD renames itself to ALL CAPS/adds "1" to name

Hey all. I'd like to consider myself an expert, but every expert runs into a new problem that they've never seen before. Ha.
Anyways, my cat renamed one of my external HDDs while I was at work to nothing (space bar I guess). So I see the issue when I get back home and rename it back. I try to name it back to "My Book" but after I do it renames itself to "MY BOOK." Upon further investigation it is actually naming itself to "My Book 1" but only showing the end user "MY BOOK."
Normally this wouldn't be an issue I could just name it something else and move on. But I have BackBlaze and it's already backed up at least 700GB of about 1000ishGB. If it's not named exactly back to "My Book" I will have to start my online backup all over again, and it's been backing up for MONTHS now, and it's not even done.
I checked permissions, I tried verify/repair, nothing. I was thinking some program had the hdd "in-use." but there really isn't. And I've relaunched Finder and rebooted the machine.

If so, dismount your external drive, then use the Finder menu item Go -> Go to Folder to visit "/Volumes" (without the quotes). Delete anything you see there with a name resembling your external drive.

Xserve seems to be renaming itself...why?

I have a 3TB Xserve RAID in RAID 3 format for storage of HD media which I import into Shake. On the desktop, the RAID array appears as a drive called Xserve 1 and everything looks as it should be. From within Shake however, the FileIn sees things differently. Working at a more Linux/Unix level, it sees the drive as Xserve 1.4. Now this wouldn't be a problem if it stayed that way, but originally Shake too saw the drive as Xserve 1, then Xserve 1.1, then Xserve 1.2 etc etc. It seems that at some level the Xserve is renaming itself on a apparently random basis. This is a real pain, because everytime the Xserve renames itself all my Shake projects lose their mappings, as the drive it is looking for has 'disappeared' - it hasn't, it's just changed its name. Anybody got an idea what's going on, and how do I get it to stop? Thanks.

I assume you mean the RAID volumes are changing names, not the XServe itself, right?
If that's the case, the only thing I can think of is that the OS will automatically append numbers to volumes if there are two volumes mounted with the same name - for example if you have a volume called 'disk' and attach another drive with the same name the OS will treat this as 'disk 1', followed by 'disk 2' if you attach another, and so on.
This can also happen if you have a mirrored array and the mirror breaks - the two halves of the mirror may appear on the desktop with one of the slices named '1' to differentiate it from the other.
Now, why this would happen in your case is a little harder to determine. It could be some issue with the RAID, or the connections to the host, but it's hard to tell.
What you don't say is when this happens - does it happen while the system is being used? or does the volume get a new name each time you reboot? In other words, knowing the trigger for the name change would go a long way to solving the problem.
I'd look at the system logs (/var/log/system.log) to see if there's any relevant information there regarding the disk mounting.

Computer Renames Itself

For some reason, our Mac has taken to renaming itself, using numbers. Its name is "Loft" (cause that's the area of the house where it resides), but when we log on, it is "Loft (2)", or later, "Loft (3)", etc. Right now, it's up to Loft (8). I occasionally go into Sharing and get it back to its original name, but it insists on resuming this odd behavior. Is there any way to stop this? What causes it? Is it harmless (but annoying)? Its because other people (with computers) who are on the same network as you have named their computers the same. If a mac which is connected to a private network which is called 'Loft' (in your case) 'senses' another mac on the network that is called the same it will add a number so that it does not 'confuse' itself with others on the same network. Why is this important? Because if you were wishing to file share from one computer called Loft to another computer called Loft and there happened to more than one called the same then which one is which?
If you were in a room full of people all called the same name (but you did not know) and shouted out that persons name, imagine your confusion when the whole room responds to your request.
You can simply cure this by re-naming your computer after yourself. For example Joe's Mac or Joe's Computer or Joe's - whatever you like really, or you could leave it as it is, the computer makes the decision for you - clever computer! You'll be content with the knowledge that other users on the network have the same sense of imagination as you.

One possible explanation of a computer renaming itself.

Yesterday, my computer renamed itself - appending a (2) to the name.
At the time I had my Dell Inspiron on the network and rebooted it after connecting to my LAN.
I believe that the reboot did not lose the original name, but kept it stored somewhere, and so when it rebooted, some part of the network was forced to rename this MBP, adding the (2).
All my TM backups were also renamed with the (2) and my terminal had the strange name, new-host instead of the computer name. This, in fact, is what called my attention to the situation.
I checked the console logs and discovered that the renaming occurred at about the time I rebooted the Dell.
It's possible that PCs or at least those running XP may store the computer name, so that after a reboot, the name would appear twice, which, of course is not allowed.
I do not know which computer actually forced this MBP name change, but it certainly was related to the Dell running XP. In fact, it might even have been the router. At this point I don't know, since there was no box that popped up asking me to approve the name change.
PS: I renamed the computer back to what it should be and rebooted. I then forced a TM backup and it restored the proper name to all the backups.
I don't have a solution, but this might help explain some of the strange computer name changes, at least those that append (2) to the original name, for those with a Windows box on their network.
I may try this again, but with TM turned off. I don't want to push things

Here's some interesting extra information. I switched to the internal speakers, to see if the clicking went away. It didn't. So I unplugged my external speakers entirely. No change. Then I turned them off. No change. So whatever it is, it's coming from the left side of the mac case. It's very quiet, and very intermitent. It also seems to be louder when I first start working, and gets quieter through the day.
I have two theories.
The first is that it's the hard drive write head. Possible, but not likely.
More likely, I think, is someting that just can't be changed, and I think that's why Apple isn't helping. I think the plastic in the case for the imac is cracking as the imac heats up and cools down. Expansion and contraction. I think that's all it is, and there's nothing we can do about it. It's just the way the guy is designed.
Anyway, it's really not a big deal at all. It just threw me off when I first heard it. Right now, I'm burning along, and I haven't heard a click in a few minutes. I'm sure when I stop using the processor, it will cool, and the case will contract, and it will click.
Likely story? Any thoughts? Other experiments?

Imac keeps renaming itself since yosemite update

Since upgrading to Yosemite my iMac is renaming itself all the time. This is yet another issue with Apple updates. I have held back updating my iPhone 5s due to all the reported issues.
come on Apple get your act together and debug before you release updates rather than rely on us poor customers!

Known bug, associated with Airport Extremes and other Apple wireless peripherals. However, you can File a bug report with Apple. and add to their database of outstanding bugs and maybe they'll fix it. It's been known for months.

8GB nano resetting itself continually - unable to stop it

Woke up this morning to find my two-week old nano continually resetting itself in its dock. It's now completely unusable - it resets, comes back, 5-10 seconds later it resets again. I've tried everything to stop it from doing this but nothing works. Cannot do a 'restore' as the nano resets itself before the process completes. Cannot even switch the nano off, so now it's just sitting on my desk resetting itself over and over and over again... which it will presumably do for the next 24 hours or so until the battery wears out.
Any ideas on how to stop it, or has my nano bit the dust..? Worked flawlessly for the past two weeks or so (apart from certain playlists not syncing, covered elsewhere...).

Honestly it sounds like a short within the ipod to me. From everything I've read, it seems that the entire charging system for the Ipod is extremely ahh, "delicate" I guess is the word.
The circuitry protection for power spikes and brownouts seems to be non-existent in the Ipod, and the power grid itself seems to be extremely delicate.

Nano turns itself off when center button pressed 4 music

my 2gb nano turns itself off only when you press the center button to select music. u can still view photos and play with extras and settings though?! Tried all toggle hold buttons/reset options and plug into PC (shows fine in itunes) but nothing resolved. Does anyone have a solution? Thx

Imac has renamed itself

My 24" 2007 iMac has been hanging on shutdown, this started a couple of weeks ago, the icons disappear off screen, desktop wallpaper goes to the usual blue screen and there it stays.
I also noticed that in Finder the computer name has changed from " John Doe's Imac " to " John Does Imac (2) ", and that I can no longer access my Time Capsule which just hangs trying to connect, with finder showing two instances of my sparsebundle.
I have repaired permissions etc, and gone as far as I am able.
Any one else had a similar situation?

I think I have discovered how to fix the renaming issue. I got a clue from another thread that pinpoints the existence of PCs on a Mac network as being the source of the problem. Well, the network here had no PCs on it - but what it did show was that the two apparently identical servers are not identical after all - because one of them is a "PC Server", the other a "Mac". When Uisge Beatha writes "when I look at a finder window from the laptop it shows 2 Mac Pro's available, one is the original name and the other is the renamed name", this is because one of those servers is an INTERNET SHARING server set up as a "PC Server" (rather than using a Mac protocol). What you need to do is go to System Preferences -> Sharing and turn off "Internet Sharing". NB - In the network in the house here, this had to be done NOT on the iMac that kept renaming itself (it was already off), but on the OTHER iMac in the house, which was the one with Internet Sharing turned on. (In other words, turn them all off, unless one Mac is quite genuinely LENDING its internet connection to other devices - as opposed to the more usual situation where every device gets the internet from a router.)
As I understand the principle, the Mac's "PC server" that provides Internet Sharing doesn't properly understand when another Mac on the network goes to sleep. Accordingly, when that second Mac wakes up again, the "PC server" on the first Mac (which never knew that the second Mac had gone to sleep in the first place) thinks that the second Mac is now a THIRD Mac, and therefore asks it to give itself a new (untaken) name.
(P.S. Note too that whenever you go to turn ON the "Internet Sharing" option, your Mac will warn you that doing this might disrupt the network and you should check with your administrator.)
Short version: leave internet sharing off unless you use it!

Hard drive renames itself

My hard drive keeps renaming itself for example this is what I had "Harddrive for mac" and now it's been renamed as "Harddrive for mac 1" .That wouldn't be so bad if the computer would let me change the name back. Every time I try to change the name back to "Harddrive for mac" the computer keeps renaming it as "Harddrive for mac "1". I go to the get info Side bar but every time I press enter it adds "1". Even if I don't press enter and I close the window for get info it's still named as "Harddrive for mac "1". I've tried other names and it doesn't add the extension "1" only on"Harddrive for mac" it that's the extension. And I have to keep the same name because there are programs that can't have their permissions changed(at least that's what they say). OH and the hard drive is an external hard drive via usb 3.0 and is from Western Digital (wd).So can someone please help me with this PLZ.

Man sometimes I feel like an idiot. I'd already tried clicking on it to see if I could rename it but it didn't work. When i tried ctrl-click, I saw that I could rename it and did. Duh.
As for how it could have happened, your post gave me a pretty good idea: kitten that sometimes crosses the keyboard.
However it required a password to finalize the change which the kitten couldn't possibly have known.

Odd issue with hard drive renaming itself on reboot.

I have an odd problem I have no idea what is causing it. I have a mac pro and I have multiple hard drives internally and i also have two esata hard raid drives connected to the extra esata ports using the cable extender. Anyways, one of those drives renames itself on reboot, causing all kinds of problems when i then try to access files on it. For example, if I had a program that had its files stored there it wouldn't be able to find them when it went looking because the volume all of a sudden is "missing" but what happens is it will attach a 1 to the end of its name. Then when I reboot, it will remove the 1. On next reboot, it will repeat and so on. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

My guess is that there is something wrong with the connection between the computer and the drive. The commonest cause is backup software that is in the middle of backing up something when the connection to the backup drive is dropped, so that the backup software creates an actual folder inside the /Volumes folder with the name of the drive and does its backup to this folder. The result is that the next time the drive mounts it gets the "DriveName 1" designation, and a bunch of space on your startup drive has mysteriously disappeared. So I think what is happening is that you are intermittently losing the drive. Whether the problem is the cable, the connectors, or the drive itself, you could try experimenting to find out. Try swapping the cable for another, and if that doesn't work try plugging the cable into a different connector on the computer, and so on.

Reel Name Renames Itself

Hello,
I am currently working in Final Cut 5. One of my iMacs that I use for digitizing renames the Reel Name according to what the last tape name was that was captured to that project. (If I changed out drives it follows the name of the last tape digitized to the project that I open) Here is an example: 7 tapes were captured to a drive and starting with the lable RRC 001 and ending with RRC 006. (This digitizing was done on a diffferent computer, which I don't have a problem with. ) I now have some new tapes to captured with the first one needing the reel name "RRC BRoll 4A", I name the reel in my capture window, capture the tape and Final Cut relables the tape as "RRC 7". It is also labled this in the capture scratch. What setting is set in Final Cut to rename my reel name?

IPod Nano turns itself on, and won't stay off

Hi, everybody!
I've had my iPod Nano for about two years now, and have noticed this problem occasionally, but it usually goes away and it has never been this bad.
Here is one scenario: I turn my iPod off by holding the play button. The screen fades to black. I move to set my iPod down, and it immediately lights up again. I press and hold the play button, but instead of turning off, the iPod begins to play music. I pause the song and press and hold again. The iPod fades to black, but again lights up the minute I move my hand.
Here is another scenario: the iPod has been off for several hours. Suddenly, it lights itself up. I pick it up and turn it off, but it again continues to light up as it sits on the desk.
This, of course, runs down the battery--I've had to charge my iPod every day for the past few days because it kills itself, waking up over and over when I'm not around to turn it off again. I'm used to only needing to charge it every few days.
I've tried setting the hold switch once I do get it to sleep, but all that means is that I then have to take it out of hold again a few seconds later to turn it off when it lights itself up. I've restarted over and over, but it keeps happening. I've also recently restored it, with no results. I don't have any alarms set, and there is nothing on my iPod but music and album artwork--no calendar, etc.
It seems to do this most when I am moving around the room. I'm wondering if, somehow, it has become hyper-sensitive and is waking up because it thinks it's being touched? (That sounds so creepy.) It also wakes up instantly if I touch the USB port on the bottom. But of course it also must do this when I'm not around, because often I'll come into the room to find the battery 50% lower than it was when I left. (And I'm the only one who uses my iPod.)
As I said, this has happened before over the two years of its life, but over the past three days or so, it has become nearly constant. I haven't dropped the iPod, it hasn't gotten wet, I haven't done anything unusual with it, so I am at a loss to explain the sudden recurrence of the issue.
I'd appreciate any kind of help!
