  • My i-pod nano plays half of a song then stops

my i-pod nano plays half a song then just stops and then turns its self off !!

I have the same problem on many songs in my 8GB NAno.
Many Songs in my Nano do not play completely. These songs played ok on my PCs and on my 20G iPod. The bad songs would play for several seconds to couple of minutes, then the play back would stop and my Nano would jump to the next song. Those bad songs were ripped from my own CDs and not downloaded from the web.
Note that I have used 2 versions of iTunes (7.0x) and 3 version of iPod software. They are all in MP3 format and less than 5 minutes long.
I have reset & restored the Nano and reload all the songs (about 7.4G in my 8G NANO). The problem remains. I have purchased another 8G Nano and reload all the songs. The problem remains. I have reset the new Nano and reload the songs using the USB cable from my iPod, the problem remains. All the 'bad' songs would play OK in my PCs and iPod.
As this is my second Nano and third USB cable used to transfer the song, the only remaining causes of the problem is the Dell PC or the Nano firmware/ software.
Out of the the 7GB of music in my Nano, I estimate there may be over 100 songs that are bad (as I have not play thru all of my songs). I do not think it is worth my time to re-rip all the bad songs from my CDs, so the only 2 things left to do is to restore the Nano and reload the song from my desk top PC; Or return the Nano to Apple.
    Any ideas or suggustions?
    Thanks

  • 3rd generation nano right half of screen is white

I just bought my 1st nano last week, I went to turn it on and the righ half of the screen went white then it went back to a full screen view w/ no problem. Now it's doing it again. I've restored it and it still does it?? Help!!!! (could it be a glitch in the system??)

Whoops sorry, you can't do that as you do not have a mac. Then bring it to the Apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • Nano skipping problem solved? (songs skipping while playing)

Well, not "solved" per se, but there does seem to be some concensus on the cause of these skips...
True, the nano is solid-state storage, and will not skip due to the same root causes that hard drive models might skip.
HOWEVER, that does not mean that the nano does not skip due to other reasons.
People on this forum, as well as members of iLounge have reported skipping problems. Concensus is that it is the nano's incompatibility with LAME encoded MP3s (some say that it's only VBR, yet some say it is also with CBR tracks).
The symptoms are tracks that skip on the nano, but play perfectly fine in iTunes (or any other player for that matter). I've heard that the mini also has this problem, but I cannot confirm... I can confirm that it happens often on my nano...
I have a very large collection of LAME encoded MP3s, so re-encoding is not a reasonable option...
If you are experiencing these issues, please report them to Apple... We need a firmware fix for this...
Question: Does anyone know if Apple is already aware of this issue, and plans to fix it in the next firmware update?

If it's skipping in iTunes and your iPod, then it is likely you have a bad file...
While there is probably a way of knowing what encoder was used to encode a file, I don't know that off hand...
I know my files are all LAME encoded because I ripped them using LAME...

  • [half-solved] Firefox won't open GtkFileChooserDialog

    Hey,
i have a rather strange problem: In Firefox i can't open the "Save File" dialogue. Whether it's in Preferences -> General -> Browse (to change the Download directory) or just rightclicking any link and trying to save it - no dice. The download folder is set to Desktop (can't change it) and even though that directory exists and when set to save files automatically, Firefox will not save/download files.
    Effectively, i can't download.
GtkFileChooserDialog shows up fine in any other application, including Chromium.
I can't tell you much about how this happened. I set up the system about a week ago and i have an almost 1:1 identical installation on my laptop where i don't have this issue:
Identical .mozilla folder, theme and gtk configuration, mime configuration, file browser, almost all the same packages, really.
The only differences might be some files in $HOME (though not .mozilla), i've had that partition for years. Though, again, most important config files are shared between the laptop and the PC and i have already deleted the .cache and any firefox related files as well as started firefox in safe-mode. FFS. The PC also uses ATI Catalyst drivers but i doubt that's related.
    WM is Awesome 3.4.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Cheers
    P.S.:
I've found out that setting "browser.folder.downloadList" (in about:config) to 2 (integer) fixes this problem. But it's very shaky, when i try to change the directory in the Preferences it will revert back to "browser.folder.downloadList 0" and the problem reoccurs. So, i won't mark this solved just yet but this a workaround for now. Still don't know why or what exactly is happening.

Try using Mozilla's Firefox build and see if it still happens.
Also try switching to the open-source ATI drivers instead of Catalyst. Despite your doubt it *may* be the issue.

  • Nano trouble

I made a thread the other day about some difficulties I had with my first Nano, and as neither the recommended troubleshooting, nor that suggested by anyone on these forums led to any avail, I opted to exchange it for a working unit.
Again, the Nano has not been functioning as it should, though it's been behaving differently than my last. When I first connected this new unit to my PC, I was prompted with a message saying that an iPod had been detected, and it appeared to be sorting itself out. Of course, then I was informed that an error had occurred during installation, and that my hardware would not function properly, then another prompt stating that the USB device was not recognized by windows, as it the foreign device had malfunctioned.
The iPod continually ejects and connects itself to my computer, though I haven't touched it since I first connected it. Occasionally, it resets itself. iTunes does not automatically open when the Nano is connected, and when it is opened manually, it does not recognize the Nano as existing (beforehand, it stated that the iPod was merely corrupt, and should be restored).
I've tried these "5 R's" for troubleshooting, everything save restoring the unit, only because I can't, seeing as iTunes doesn't acknowledge it.
Where should I go from here?

As you have already tried most things probably then next is this Restoring iPod to factory settings

  • 1 gb ipod nano - trouble with first time charge?

I've recently tried to charge my 1gb nano for the first time using my USB hub. I'm running xp w/sp 2...and after plugging the nano into my computer it did nothing. I researched and buying an A/C adaptor was suggusted. I purchased the charger and still nothing. Not a battery icon, a lightning bolt..nothing. I will say when I first plugged the nano in to charge the apple icon came up twice and I haven't seen any signs of life from the thing since then.
Can anybody help? Prior to my returning or throwing this thing out the window? Maybe technology just isn't ready to properly replace my discman!

See these or return it and get another one.
    My iPod won't turn on.

  • IPod Nano troubles, please help

I'll try to explain this problem to the best of my ability, this has been an ongoing problem since my sister got her iPod Nano:
Me and my sister both got iPods for Christmas, her a Nano and myself a Video, now this isn't about me, my iPod works with my computer (thankfully), but my sister's Nano does not work with her computer. The only reason she has music is because she hooked it up to mine and got my music (a process so annoying to me it's hard to explain, and no, before it is suggested I am not going to add her music to my computer, add it to my library, hook up her Nano, give her her music, and then undo that whole process afterwards. Also I am going off to college next year and won't be able to do that all the time).
Anyway, so the problem appears to be that Windows does not recognize her Nano. I follow the instructions exactly like I did to use my iPod, I install the newest software (iPod updater and iTunes) and then put music into iTunes and then plug in her Nano, and I get a very strange noise. If you can imagine the two noises commonly heard, two beeps, one low and one high when you plug in a piece of hardware, and one high and one low when you unplug it, think of this noise as three, very quick low beeps. I do not know what this noise means, but it appears to mean "we know you plugged something in, but we don't know what the heck to do." iTunes at this point does not automatically update the iPod, and when I go into iPod Updater, the message is "plug in an iPod to begin" (although one is plugged in).
Originally I thought the problem was with her USB drives, although they are USB 2.0 as recommended. I called an Apple service representative (actually a few, only one giving me anything close to a reason for the problem), and upon checking the Device Manager the representative told me that "VIA" USB controllers are not compatible with the Nano. I did not find this likely, but I accepted it as the reason and she has since gone without an updated music selection in her Nano.
Recently my sister purchased a PCI USB card to put into her computer, which I installed (with difficulty, hard to find the drivers). We again tried to use the Nano with no luck. These new USB controllers are "NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controllers" also 2.0, according to the packaging.
I have since reinstalled iTunes and iPod Updater to their most recent versions and reinstalled the USB ports twice, with no better results. Currently I am at the Device Manager and it shows it "recognizes" the iPod, under "Other Devices" (which has a yellow question mark as the icon) and the iPod tab itself also has a yellow question mark as the icon, but this yellow question mark has a smaller yellow circle with an exclamation point ("!") inside it. I attempted to use the "Add New Hardware" wizard to "install" the iPod, but at the point where it looks for drivers it says it can't find any.
Please help, I would be greatly appreciative of any information concerning:
-My sister's USB ports and if they are the problem
-What the "three beeps" noise means when I plug in the Nano
-Where I can find "drivers" (if they exist) for the Nano so the computer recognizes it
-Any other ideas/suggestions that could be of help
Thanks in advance! I hope someone else out there can answer my problem!

    hiya!
-Where I can find "drivers" (if they exist) for the Nano so the computer recognizes it
hmmm. okay, perhaps we should try giving the techniques in this MarkJones post a try:

  • 4th-gen iPod nano troubles....

I'll plug my 4th generation iPod nano into my computer (PC, I know...) and it will tell me that my the settings on my iPod simply NEED to be restored. I'll then disconnect after I have put all my music and whatnot back on and there won't be anything on my iPod.
This happens every single time I plug it into my computer and I just don't know what to do besides buy a new one, but I'm broke, so that wouldn't be possible.

Apple created the stupid AAC file format to annoy Windows users.
Change your settings in Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing ~ to "Import Using 'MP3 Encoder'" - not AAC. If you wanna send music to a friend over AIM/MSN/Yahoo or whatever and they dont have iTunes, it's annoying, MP3 is more globally accepted.
So your iPod works with your computer, but not with the iTunes.
    Things to try:
    1) Re-install iTunes
    2) Reset iPod
Good luck and reply back soon!

  • [half-SOLVED] eth0 and eth1 getting swapped every time

    Hi,
The title says it all, but I don't know what else to do.
I've tried putting the modules in order in the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf, but it doesn't work. Apparently, the modules in MODULES aren't guaranteed to load in the order they are anymore.
I've tried following this wiki page, about Udev, but it didn't work, too.
I also tried closing my eyes and pretending it doesn't happen, but it didn't work too.
    TIA

Yeah, except it doesn't work here.
hw-tph wrote:Read the manpage for iftab: man 5 iftab
    Quickest and cleanest way, IMHO.
It's half working. I've edited /etc/iftab and I've put 'ifrename' in /etc/rc.local . My wired connection does get renamed, but my wireless doesn't. It gives me an error saying that eth1 is busy, which doesn't make sense as I load wicd only after ifrename.
I think now I have a predictable behaviour: wired is always 'wired' and wireless is always 'eth1', so I'll keep it. It wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it's better than completely random.
As hw-tph's solution is the one that suckless™, I'll stay with it. Thanks to all of you that tried to help.

  • Nano troubles (obviously)

    Ok, here's the story.
My friend has recently ruined my ipod video, so I am now using an old nano 2nd gen, the 2 GB version.
I put one song on, and then realized that i didn't want all of the songs on there.
So instead of just hilighting and deleting them all, i returned the ipod to factory settings.
Ever since then, the ipod shows up in iTunes and device manager, but the screen just says 'charging' or shows the main menu (varies). Could someone help me or tell me whats up?

well I just kinda checked it today and it finally software reset, but after i closed iTunes. I'll leave this thread unawnsered to anyone else who gets the problem.

Same exact hardware config used to be fine with winblows/ubuntu. So I'm guessing its something to do with how my arch is configured at the moment?

  • [HALF-SOLVED] Can't do "startx" after recent update

    Hello everyone!
After i updated my system with "pacman -Syu" and rebooted my PC, i got message "FATAL: module "fbcon" not found!" and X failed to start by typing "startx" on the console as i always do.
I have xf86-video-intel and xorg-server 1.7.5 installed. everything from standart repo.
Also, It may be strange that Xorg.0.log ends with some messages about evdev.
don't know what to do to solve this problem. help me please, someone who knows what is it caused by?

If you would have searched at least this forum, you would have found: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79362
Apparently the FATAL-warning can be ignored. Give us is the output of the logs:
    cat /var/log/xorg.0.log | grep EE
    cat /car/log/xorg.0.log | grep WW
Then we can start making suggestions.

  • Ipod nano trouble

my ipod nano was on hold and i turned hold off to update it and the hold symbol won't go away. What do I do?

    Hey there,
Have you tried resetting your iPod? To do this hold the Center and Menu button until the Apple logo appears. If that doesn't work, it may be a good idea to restore the iPod completely. Keep in mind that this will wipe all the files off the iPod. Step-by-step instructions on how to do this can be found in the Apple document below.
