Nano + USB 2.0 card = 0

Hi,
Just bought my wife a nano. It's simply as cool as it gets. The color screen is great for ease of use.
However, it will not work at all with my iogear usb 2.0 card (in a PM G4 dual 1.25 running 10.3.9). The card is new and works with a FW/USB2.0 external HDD. At first I dismissed that the card could be the issue, but after poking around here, it seems it might be.
The symptom is a freeze with the ipod updater and itunes and system profiler and disk utility. all have to be force quit to restart.
The nano does work with my USB 1 port and on my wife's ibook usb 1 port. So, the nano appears to be okay.
Is this possible that it will not work with a 2.0 card that otherwise works?
Is there a card that will work???
Thanks,
David

Sorry, I didn't mean to bum you out, but I'm sure you would have discovered this problem eventually. There are postings all over this board and all over the web on usb 2.0 compatibility and Tiger. Most of the postings are from G4 users whose Macs didn't come with the 2.0 spec. A lot of people are beginning to buy 2.0 cards for their G4s to accomodate their nifty new Nanos, only to discover the addition of the usb 2.0 card has made their Mac buggy. It's not just Nanos, but almost any storage device seems to cause problems if it's left plugged in when the Mac goes to sleep. Of course, the usual finger-pointing and blaming the problem on the other party is happening - Apple vs. card manufacturers. Whoever fixes the problem will sell a lot of usb 2.0 cards!

I got a iPOD Nano for my G4 Quicksilver Mac. OSX 10.4.8.
Not happy with USB 1 for speed so I got a generic own store 'New Link USB 2.0' PCI card in Maplins...
Suffice to say, it only works on some USB devices but at speeds of USB 1.1.
BUT IT DOESN"T EVEN DETECT MY iPOD. Can't mount or anything...
    Just charges away.
Does anybody know of a PCI card that DEFINITELY works as a USB 2.0 connection fully with all devices on a MAC G4
I hear good things about the Sonnett Allegro USB PCI Card...
    Anybody got any thoughts?

  • Nano USB 2.0 Problem

Hi, I'm having a trouble with my Nano. I have 2 Nanos and a MB Asus P4SE/U2 with 2 USB 2.0 ports. When I first conected my Nano it apeared a message saying "This device can be faster if you use a USB 2.0 port" or something like that. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports on the back of my PC and had already tried to conect directly to these 2 ports, buts this message keep showing and it takes about 10 minutes to sync 1 giga. To my surprise, when I conected my other Nano (it was the first time I was using this Nano too) it conected trough the same port and cable with speed compatible to USB 2.0! Is there a chance the problem is in my other Nano? Is there anything else I could try?

What manufacturer's name is printed on the controller chip on the StarTech USB card? If its VIA or ALi, these chips are not as Mac-compatible as some others, like NEC. About 1-2 years ago, I installed about (8) IOGEAR 2-port USB 2.0 cards in some G3s, and haven't had a problem with them in OS X or OS 9.2.2. The IOGEAR logo sticker is covering the controller chip, so I don't know what manufacturer's chip they used then, or if they're using a different manufacturer's controller chip now. The consensus of opinion is to look for a USB 2.0 card having the NEC controller chip, for the closest thing to trouble-free operation.

  • IPhone 4 not recognized when connected to new USB 2.0 card

I have an iphone 4 OS4.1 on a no-name Windows XP Pro (service pack 3) PC with an AMD processor and lots of RAM.
I had the phone working and syncing beautifully with the onboard USB 1.1 but it was slow. So I bought a new PCI USB 2.0 card and installed it. Card is installed and there are no problems according to the status in System Devices.
But the computer does not recognize the iphone when plugged into one of those ports. If I plug it into one of the USB 1.1 ports that are still in the machine, it syncs and works fine. If I plug it into one of the new USB 2.0 ports, the PC shows the window at bottom right saying the device is not recognized. Tried the wizard but it's useless.
    THOUGHTS?????

    Nevermind!!!
It turned out to be a faulty cable! I tried it with a different sync cable and it works fine!
    So disregard the question above.

  • SanDisk USB 3.0 Card Reader does not work with OSX Mavericks.

Since updating to OSX Mavericks (10.9) My  USB 3.0 SanDisk "ImageMate All-in-One" Card Reader has begun to fail.
It all seems to work proper at first. The memory card shows up in finder and I'm able to browse the files. But when I try to transfer any files it un-mounts from finder and only transfers the first file.
This does not happen under previous OSX versions. I have tried on other computers since, so the card reader is fine.
My USB 2.0 card reader saved my life this time. It works totally fine.
Is this a known problem? Are you guys working on it?

  • Shuffle isn't recognized through USB 2.0 card

My 1st Gen Shuffle is perfectly functional when I plug it into one of the USB 1.1 ports on my PB, but unfortunately, when I connect the Shuffle to one of the ports of a USB 2.0 card inserted in my PB, the Shuffle does not appear in iTunes or anywhere else on my system. The status light above the click wheel just blinks.
The card is an Adaptec USB2connect For Notebooks, and I have no problems connecting and using my 4th Gen iPod through its ports. The Shuffle works through the USB 1.1 port, but for speedier transfer times, I'd prefer to use it through one of the USB 2.0 ports on the card.
Does the 1st Gen Shuffle recognize third-party USB 2.0 cards? If so, is this particular card the problem? Any and all ideas about this would be most welcome. Thanks.

  • USB TV Tuner Card for Macbook Air

    Dear all,
Hello! i'm using a Macbook Air (mid-2012) 11.6". i'm in need of a USB tv tuner card. Which brand i should choose?
Please note that, Gadmei is the most available brand in our country. is it possible to use this brand of tv tuner (USB) with Macbook air? OS is- MacOSX 10.9.2 (mavericks). Please suggest.
Also plz tell me is there any way to use Gadmei or RealMedia TV tuner with mac without official mac driver? (i mean using EyeTV or such third-party TV app)
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

Unfortunately most of these TV devices require USB2 bandwidth so are not suitable for the iMac G3.
The Firewire versions (EyeTV 310, 410 and 610 depending on input type) are the only options.
The EyeTV 250 is an analogue only Tuner that does work on USB1.1 but in a low quality mode only.

  • PCIe USB 3.0 Card appears in system report, but won't mount drives

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2
Bought an Orico PME-4U USB 3.0 4-port PCIe card with the Sata power cable.
Installations seems to go okay -- the card is powered by one of the empty hard drive bays.  The card appears in my computer's System Report as follows:
    NEC USB 3.0:
      Name:          pci1b73,1100
      Type:          USB Superspeed Bus
      Driver Installed:          Yes
      MSI:          Yes
      Bus:          PCI
      Slot:          Slot-3
      Vendor ID:          0x1b73
      Device ID:          0x1100
      Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x1b73
      Subsystem ID:          0x1100
      Revision ID:          0x0001
      Link Width:          x1
      Link Speed:          2.5 GT/s
When I plug in external drives, they receive power from the card, but nothing will mount.
Is it a faulty card?  This is the second USB 3.0 card I've tried unsuccessfully.

Orico tech support had nothing to add beyond installing "GenericUSBXHCI.kext" and trying out different PCI slots.
I've tried two brands of PCIe USB 3.0 cards now and neither work.
I've also checked the SATA power cable and it works with the 4-port Firewire 800 PCIe card I have, so it's not that.
    Anybody have any ideas?

  • Is it possible to install a USB 2.0 card in an old eMac?

    Hi,
This is probably an embarrassingly ignorant question, but I'd be grateful to know whether I can install a USB 2.0 card in my old eMac 1GHz PowerPC G4 (1GB RAM) running 10.5.6, which only has the old USB 1 ports buitl in. Basically, I'd like to be able to sync my iPhone and attach other newer peripheral devices, such as external hard drives with USB 2.0 connections.
    Thanks!

  • Spectrum Expert - USB or Express Card

The Spectrum Expert is a great tool but the problem is to find a notebook with a PC-Card / PCMCIA  slot.
I know that there are adapters available for EC to PC-Card but I think this is not a solution for customers.
I didn't find any information on the Cisco website about an alternative.
Question: When will be a Spectrum Expert Card available with USB or EC connector?

    Hi Irina and Scott,
I know the AP SE-Connect feature but we need a portable solution.
Cisco should think about a USB or Express Card solution.
The APs are working with the Spectrum Expert and it will be hard to explain to a customer that he should use a 3rd party solution to get a mobile solution.
    Thanks and best regards,

Unfortunately, you received incorrect information. The USB port on the Time Capsule will only support a printer and/or hard drive. Modems are not supported.

  • Altell USB Internet Connect Card connection Problem

    Altell USB Internet Connect Card
My daughter is using and Alltel , UT Star Com, UM 175 wireless connect card on a iMac G5 with OS 10.4.6. She had a good internet connection for two days, then nothing since. She has had many phone tech assistance with Alltel, but still unable to reconnect.
In System preferences it shows that she is connected via “Pan Tech USB Modem” port 777. She is getting good signal strength with send and receive signal and connect time. However, when using Safari and Mail app she is unable to connect to the internet.
It seems to me that the problem lies within the set=up between the iMac and Alltel card. The card seems to be making the connection, but for some reason the computer can’t realize that this card is the way to the internet. Safari brings up the usual “you are not connected to the Internet”, then the diagnostics application that guides you through troubleshooting with the usual questions, none of which include a wireless USB connection.
Is there some other thing she needs to do for her iMac to recognize the Altell card?

I just gave up on this problem and went in another direction

  • USB to Express Card adapter/Express Card to Firewire

    Macbook Air October 2010.
Comes with two USB 2.0 ports
    Can I do the following?
    - Connect  USB to Express Card adapter
    - Connect the Express Card port to a Firewire adapter
    - Connect MiniDV camcorder to Firewire port

Also... as they went through the trouble to specifically indicate the compatible cards, I would imagine there are known incompatibilities with other card types. None of the cards they list would have difficulty over USB. Each of these cards already have similar counterparts that are available to connect directly to USB (vs. using an express card). This would seem most useful for people that may already have express cards that they use in other notebooks so they could use them in a machine without an express card slot... otherwise I would imagine people would just get the USB versions of these devices. USB hubs can obviously connect directly to a USB port, memory card readers are also available for connecting directly to a USB port. RS232 is pretty dated and USB can easily handle RS 232 throughput. I'm not exactly sure what a printer card is... but printers generally connect via USB (or parallel in older machines)... again... very easy for USB to handle. In order for it to work with firewire, they would have to have a hardware translator built into it. I'm sure they would list firewire if it was an option.

  • E9280t can't boot with USB 3.0 cards (multiple vendors tried) New e9280t BIOS version needed

    Hello...
I purchased a new e9280t last year from the HP Website complete with 9 gb memory (now 16), Blu-ray/DVD writer & reader, Hauppauge Digital TV tuner, ATI Radeon 4850 Dual Monitor video card, etc... SInce then I've added more memory and a 3 port Firewire 400/800 card. Its running Win 7 Pro (sp1) and the BIOS is v5.29.
I purchased a external USB 3.0 WD drive (3 TB) and a StarTech USB 3.0 card (Amazon.com). After installing the USB 3.0 card, the system would power on for one second and die and then do it again a couple seconds later and the cycle continued until the power cord was pulled. I then pulled the USB 2.0 card and tried again only to have the same results. The only cards that remained in the system during the testing was the ATI card and the Hauppuage TV Card.
Thinking the problem was with the USB 3.0 card, I purchased another vendor's (Rocketfish from BestBuy) and installed it. The same problem as with the other USB 3.0 card, the system won't start.
No driver software or any other changes were made to the system before installation attempts (per vendor's installation instructions).
Since the failures all occur during the initial power up sequence and that the cards were tried with and without having power connected to them, that the problem is only correctable with a BIOS upgrade for the TRUCKEE motherboard. I could be wrong but I'm going on 30 years of hardware experience as my framework for that opinion.
If anyone else has this same problem, It would be good to rally around and see if HP notices us.
    Thanks,
    Norm
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Greetings,
I have tried multiple vendors and have yet to find a USB 3 card that will allow the computer to boot (for more than a 1/10th of a second).
I've tried removing every card in the system except the the display card and no go. Two of the cards removed had power connectors to them and the third did not. So even after removing those cards along with disconnecting one of the two internal hard drives, I'm certain its not a power issue. As to what it might be, I don't know.
If anyone else has been able to get a USB 3 card to work in that system, I'd love to hear from you.
    Thanks,
    Norm
