Nano vs. itunes problems

all my songs on my ipod are deleted and i can not update it to put them back on every time i try ro update it says "Can not update iPod, the selected playlists no longer exist". i dont even have any playlists besides the ones that come with itunes even when i plug the ipod in normally it would automatically update now it just says that message and i havent even selected a playlist

Which iPod do you have?
it says it holds 2
What says it holds 2?
On the iPod menu, go to Settings -> About.
It will show you the number of songs on it already, the total capacity and the available memory.
It does not show it has 2 GB capacity because it does not have 2GB capacity..

The 5th Generation iPod is the iPod with video, not the iPod Nano.

IPod Nano Grey Out Problem in iTunes??

I purchased my iPod Shuffle last year. I installed iTunes in my Window PC and purchased music via the music store.
A month ago, I purchased a iPod Nano, I added the iPod Nano to iTunes. iTunes will update my iPod Nano automatically when I connect it to my computer.
However, all the songs in my iPod Nano menu in iTunes appear 'grey out'. I can't do anything like delete, play them etc??
Can anybody advise me how to solve this 'grey out' problem?

If you update automatically, the songs are grayed out, because the songs should be on your computer.
To delete songs, you can uncheck the songs/podcasts you don't want on your iPod in iTunes. Then connect your iPod to the computer. When it appears in iTunes, go to edit-->preferences. Click the iPod tab, then the music tab under that. Check "Only Update Checked Songs" and click OK. Only checked songs will be put onto the iPod.

Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod
To be able to play songs on the iPod through the computer, delete songs only on the iPod (without having to check and uncheck), and to have songs not grayed out, you would have to manually update. Songs would no longer automatically update onto the iPod. You would have to drag new songs that you want on your iPod onto it (through iTunes)...

Itunes problems with new nano, purchased songs

Hello all. I am having a few problems with my itunes and newly purchased nano that hopefully you guys can give me some advice on. First of all, when i plug in my nano, it does not recognize it unless i close itunes and reopen it. Then, it takes a few minutes to open and acts like it is a new nano every time i open it. Meaning, it asks me to name the nano and asks me to apply all the settings etc. After that it works. I then can eject it. If I then re open itunes, with my nano not plugged in, itunes thinks that my nano is plugged in and says its corrupted. If i attempt to do anything in itunes, it freezes up.
In an unrelated problem, i am forced to authorize my computer to play my purchased songs every time i open itunes. It never remembers when I authorize it.

OK, could not resist. I did go ahead and put my old run history back into the new & now restored Nano. No problems. Everything is fine. (Be remember, this is not something that is supported or approved by Apple or Nike.)
There may be no connection between adding the old run data files to the new Nano and the sound & freezing problems. Others have already complained about those.
However, what I will say is that you should never mess around with the Nike+ xml "Preferences" file or the "Best" file. These are invisible for a reason. You can put your old xml run data files into your "latest" folder and thus get them on your new Nano, but you CANNOT change your Totals on your new Nano no matter what you muck around with. However, if you try it and things go wrong, doing a "restore" should save the day.
And it should save the day for sound problems and recurring Nano freezes unless you have a defective Nano.

I'd like to get the new iPod Nano, but I have Mac OS 10.2.8, so I can't get iTunes 7. It says on the system requirements that I need 7, but is it really necessary? (i.e. is it possible to use the new iPod Nano with iTunes 6?)

While I haven't tried, I would image the answer is no.
Usually when iPods are released with a new iTunes version, they aren't made to be/are made not to be compatible with previous iTunes versions.
It may work, but I can't be sure either way (someone else may have tested this).
In the past, even if iTunes updated the iPod, there tended to be problems syncing.

New Nano shows up as old Nano in itunes

Hi,
I've searched the forums and found multiple problems with the Nano.....wow. Here's my problem:
I have 2 Nanos (N1 and N2). N1 is the original Nano 4gb I bought and it worked fine. I purchased another Nano (N2) and a few weeks ago it worked fine also, on the same itunes/user account. I could switch back and forth and itunes would show the proper Nano name.
However, last week my N2 Nano now shows up as the N1 Nano in itunes, even though Windows shows it as the proper N2 disk label. What's going on??? I can plug/unplug the N2 Nano and itunes shows the N1 Nano as being plugged/unplugged. Itunes also shows the music which is on the N1 Nano when the N2 Nano is plugged in (they have different playlists and music). This isn't right.
btw, I don't have them both plugged in at the same time....I only use them one at a time.
This is driving me crazy. Why can't itunes properly show what Windows already knows....the proper name and files for my N2 Nano?

okay ... it's plausible that you might have a rare "doubled" version of the following issue:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
what happens with this (if it's what is going on in your case) is that you get a confusion between a drive and nano1, and an ipod_control folder makes it's way to the drive. plug in nano2, and you get a confusion with nano2 and the drive ... itunes reads the settings in the errant ipod_control folder, and thinks it's looking at nano1.
does changing the drive letter have any effect on the misidentification?
you may need to put the ipod into disk mode to get it to show up in Disk Management:

Both my CD drives have disappeared after Nano and iTunes install...

My girlfriend has installed her new nano and itunes from the install Cd that came with it, immediately after install both her CD drives have now disappeared from Explorer and disk management.
Anyone had this problem and knows how to fix it? Urgent help is needed!

Nano (2gb) battery problem

alright. my 1st gen ipod nano is having some problems. whenever i charge it over night or whenever, it always says "BATTERY FULLY CHARGED" and i can never turn it off. please help!

To expand on what superman56 provided, the following was copied from About iPod Batteries.
Maximum Battery Life: iPod can play up to 20 hours, iPod nano can play up to 14 hours and iPod shuffle can play up to 12 hours on a full charge at original capacity. Apple runs a number of tests for battery life using songs encoded in various formats, including MP3, AAC and songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store. The songs are played continuously through a playlist without interruption, with backlight and equalizer off, using factory default settings.
Up to means just that. Using the backlight and the iPod's equalizer setting, fast forwarding thru/searching for music, viewing pictures or calendar entries added to your Nano from iTunes or playing games while listening to music causes the iPod's flash drive to be accessed continuously or more often which causes more drain on the battery.
Doing anything besides listening to music continuously without interuption, with backlight and equalizer off using factory default settings causes more drain on the battery.

What you have on your computer is your iTunes library, not your "account." The "account" you have for iTunes is your Apple ID, which you use when purchasing or downloading from the iTunes Store. If these songs came from music CDs that you imported into iTunes, those songs are not related to your Apple ID.

How are they not "recognized"? Are the songs still listed in your iTunes music library, but grayed out? They no longer appear in your iTunes library at all?
If you search your computer (not in iTunes) for the song files, using one of the song names, can you find the song files?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion. Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

Ive got the same problem, just got my iphone unlocked, and they told me to sync it to itunes to get it permently unlocked, well everytime i plug my iphone in it says; it wont work as it needs up dating to 10.6.3, which i have already updated, but still doesnt work, so how can i get my phone unlocked?
