Nano won't appear in iTunes or Windows...I've tried everything.

I've had my iPod for about 4 months.
It isn't appearing in iTunes or Windows.
I've tried the 5 R's, none of which worked.
When I try and use the iPod updater to restore my Nano it just says "Initializing..." and after a few seconds it says "Invalid iPod service version" and shuts down.
My computer operates really slowly when my iPod is connected.
When I try to disconnect it, it takes ages...only to tell me that my iPod can not be disconnected.
So I have no choice but to just pull it out of the USB port.
When my iPod is connected, it just freezes on the "do not disconnect" screen...which doesn't flash, the screen simply freezes.
So when I disconnect it, I have to restart the iPod just to use it.
Please help I've been scouring the support site trying to solve this myself, and sorry for bothering you all with this common question, this is just a last resort as NOTHING I have tried is working.

Please help have been given an ipod nano 7th generation but cannot get it to work, downloaded latest itunes software, done all microsoft updates, restarted numerous times, have tried others suggestions online, nothing working. The usb port works with other usb devices so no idea why won't recognise ipod. Do I give up and try and get a replacement ipod?

Doublechecking. Have you tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

Ipod does not appear in itunes . . . i've tried everything!

My ipod shows up in Windows, but not in itunes. This has been a problem for months and I've tried all the suggestions I can find on the "itunes Service and Support" site and in similar topic threads. It sounds like there are some glitches with itunes v.7, so I removed it and downloaded v.6.0.5, only to get an error message that says "The file 'i Tunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of i Tunes."
Please help! I have no music on my ipod and I miss it!

Just an update--I successfully switched back to itunes v.6.0.5, but it's still not finding my ipod. I'm not sure what else to try . . .

If you're still having troubles, I had a very similar problem and this is what fixed it:
Start menu > Search "Device Manager" > Portable Devices > iPhone > Properties > Driver > Update Driver
Once the driver uploaded my phone worked perfectly. For some reason when I reinstalled iTunes the driver wasn't fixed but manually updating it this way did work. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into your computer when you're going through this or else you won't be able to open the iPhone properties.
This was on my HP and I assume most other PCs have a similar thing if not the exact same pathway.

I switch to Mac for less problems and have had more crashes, pinwheels and issues than I ever imagined<<<</div>

my iPod is fully charged (2nd gen nano), and charged up last night.
When i plug it in to put more songs on, it won't appear in iTunes or my computer. I know that the USB port is working fine, becuase i tried my pen drive and that was fine, and the iPod screen lights up.
I've dont the first 4 R's - Reset, Retry, Restart and Reinstall.
But i don't really want to do Restroe, because it will wipe everything off my iPod, and if i then still can't get it to sync, then i'm abit screwed.
Any toher ideas from anyone?

When the screen lights up, is there anything on the display? If it's just a white lit up screen, try to force it into disk mode (which can be difficult if you can't see anything). Essentially, turn the hold switch off so there's no orange color beneath it, hold the menu & middle buttons for 10 seconds and then immedidately hold the middle & play/pause buttons for 10 seconds. If it appears in iTunes at this point you may want to consider restoring.
If this is not the case and you see the normal display when it's connected to the computer, I'd suggest connecting it to a different USB port (preferably one directly on the back of the computer - avoid connecting the iPod via USB hubs, keyboards, printers, etc). Try this step even though your USB port works with other devices. You might also try a different USB cable if you have one from another iPod.

My 7th generation iPod nano does not appear in iTunes on a Windows 8 PC since installing the 11.1.4.62 update. I have now tried every step from the recommended KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363 with no relief. Windows sees the iPod just fine...

Same problem. Also Windows 8... There is no problem at all with a Windows 7 computer.

Shuffle 3G won't appear in iTunes 9.0.1

Got a new Shuffle last week...synced it in iTunes 9.0 on my iMac.
Yesterday I updated to iTunes 9.0.1
Yesterday I plugged in the Shuffle and it won't appear in iTunes. So I plugged it into my daughter's Windows PC that had iTunes 9.0. Shuffle appeared fine, but of course wasn't synced to that PC and I didn't want to have it connected to my daughter's PC.
Tried again today on the Mac with every available USB port...no luck. Tried again on PC...worked fine. Then I updated the PC to 9.0.1 just to see if it was the cause...and sure enough, the Shuffle will now NOT appear on the Windows PC!
Is this a known problem? I can't find any google hits about it.

I just did the first step which said reset ipod by taking it out of the cradle turning it off for 5 seconds and turning it back on then returning the switch to the off position before putting it back in the cradle and it showed up! But it appears to be empty now (no songs showing up)
or maybe you might try this ipod reset utility if above does not work

I have a MAC OS X Version 10.3.9
My generation 3 Ipod won't appear on ITunes or my MAC desktop.

I have borrowed several cables to no effect.
I can't restore my Ipod ( because it won't communicate with my MAC)
I have a 100 GB external HD with firewall.
The last time my Ipod worked it was plugged into the external HD.
Should I buy a new cable with a USB plug?
Do I have dead "plug-ins" on my MAC?
Help...I need my daily podcasts for the hour-long commutes.

I have tries the cable on another Mac and my ipod did appear. So the problem lies with the Mac and not the iPod.

Nano does not appear in ITunes or Finder; unable to re-set device

Suddenly my 2nd gen nano does not appear in ITunes or Finder. I looked up support articles and it says to try re-setting the Nano, but I'm unable to do that -- I press the center and menu buttons; have also tried the menu and play buttons but the apple logo never appears. I've had problems with the menu button "sticking" before, so perhaps that's why...Nevertheless, how else do I fix this issue?? I've been unable to sync or transfer my recent purchases, so this is frustrating....

Do you have an administrator account on your computer? If you are not logged in as administrator, do so before attempting to change the to manual. However, I myself am having the same problems with my own ipod..
