Nano won't connect to stereo dock

I am having trouble getting my 5th gen nano to connect to my home stereo dock. It returns a message on the nano "Unrecognised Device" Older nanos 2nd & 3rd Gen work but my new one won't. Any suggestions how I fix this?

Call the home stereo manufacturer. You need to find out from them if their docking system is compatible with the iPod Nano 5th gen with video.
From the iPod Nano FAQ
*+Question: Can I connect iPod to my home stereo?+*
*+Answer: Yes.* With its powerful 60 mW amplifier and 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, iPod will sound great on your home stereo. Third-party stereo adapters are available for listening to your iPod music library using home stereo speakers. *Compatible devices must be self-powered and support audio output through a 3.5 mm headphone jack.* For optimal sound quality when using external speakers, set the iPod volume at less than half the maximum output and adjust your listening volume through your stereo controls. This prevents overamplification, which can cause distortion and reduce audio quality.+

You posted to the wrong area of discussions. This is the 5th Generation iPod group (the video full sized iPods that were released previous to the "Classic" models). If you are asking a Nano question, you want to post to this area...

  • Nano won't play in the dock when battery is full...what's up with that?

I have an iPod sound dock, it plays my new iPod nano fine, but when it charges the battery completely...even while it is playing a song, the screen will change to the "Charge Complete" screen and the music will stop. So I can only play music when the battery is drained. What's wrong?

Add me to the list of "same problem" I had my 3G Nano for less than a day - docking with JBL Onstage II - and don't recall the problem happening once before the 1.0.2 firmware upgrade. Now it happens somewhat randomly, but with a mean of once every hour our so. To repeat: Nano 3G plays normally with screen dimmed, then "battery charged" screen lights up and playback stops until I hit play again. Does this happen with dock products (i.e. do any of you have non-JBL dock with the same problem)? Jerryii_:) does your car have a JBL / Harmon Kardon docking adapter? If it's just the JBL dock I have 30 days for a no-questions asked exchange or refund.

  • 4th generation Nano won't charge with stereo.

My 2nd generation just decided to die. I've had it integrated with my car stereo and it was working great until this morning when it just died. So, I decided to use the 4th generation that I had connect to my Bose system. To my surprise the Nano said that it wouldn't charge. This is a relatively new $2K+ stereo so I'm not happy with the Nano right now. Just for grins, I tried a friends 3rd generation Nano and it seems happy  to charge. Any ideas what has changed between these generations? Any (non-xrated) suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

See here: iPod's battery doesn't charge
Leave it to charge for a few hours.  Then come back and reset it if necessary.
If nothing else, it's likely a sign of a dead battery that needs to be replaced.

  • 2Gen Nano won't connect to Itunes

I have a 2Gen Ipod Nano, and it refuses to connect to Itunes. I have done every troubleshooting step, still no success. Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know what "every troubleshooting step" means unless you state it, so...
Are you using a direct USB port on the computer?  Did you confirm that USB is working properly, by connecting something else to it, preferably something similar to an iPod, such as a USB flash drive?
Did you confirm your USB docking cable is good?  You can do this by trying that cable with another Apple device, or by trying your iPod with another (known-good) cable.
Did this work before with this computer and this iPod, and it does not know for some reason?  Or is this the first time you are trying to connect this iPod to this computer?  If it worked before with the same setup, there is less chance that the cause is a software issue on the computer.
If you can rule out bad USB port, bad USB cable, and computer software problem, the remaining possibility is a problem on the iPod.  Did you try putting the iPod in Disk Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
Shut down the computer and disconnect all USB devices.  Start it up with only standard keyboard and mouse connected (if nornally used).  Run iTunes and connect iPod to a direct USB port.
What version of Windows do you use?  Is it XP?

  • Sixth generation iPod Nano won't connect

I have a sixth generation ipod nano.  When I connect it to my computer, it will charge, but I can't add any music.  It won't show up in the iTunes sidebar, nor will disk mode work (I tried putting it into disk mode and it goes straight to the "safe to eject" screen and I have to do the sleep+volume down restart).  I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, reset the iPod, reset my computer, tried a different cord, and everything else the support website said to do.  Is there anything else I can try or I'm I screwed?

When you connect the iPod, does its screen change to indicate that it is connecting?
In iTunes, you do not see it in the sidebar, under DEVICES?  NOTE:  The latest version of iTunes may hide the sidebar.  If it is hidden, go to menu bar, under View, and select Show Sidebar.
Try going through this procedure, to see if the iPod's assigned drive letter is the problem
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1493
When you do this, do you see it listed in Computer Management?

  • My iPod nano won't connect to any computer!!

It worked for a while on my computer, got my bunch of songs on it. Then it stopped connecting into iTunes and then stopped connecting into the computer all together. It won't even light up when I plug it in. I can still listen to my songs on it, I just can't charge the battery or get new songs. I tried using all the different USB ports, and restarted my computer about 50 times. (I'm using windows) I also reinstalled iTunes and the iPod but it's still not working! I also took it to a friend's and tried plugging it into their computer with my iPod cord and their iPod cord and it still wasn't connecting!
    I desperately need help please!

I am having a similar problem. I am actuall on my third 2nd generation nano. One I had to return do to that issue. I recieved the second one (product red) and I was able to get 600 songs on it froma friends computer. It connected to mine once but won't anylonger. The third one I was having the same issue with it but somehow got it to work. I updated itunes and ran a virus scan. I wish I could help but I'm starting to think about stomping on them. I have 4, three work and one dosen't.

  • Ipod Nano won't connect to windows vista

    please someone help meeeee

Your speaker has probably auto connected to your phone so the Nano can't see it. Turn off BT on your phone and any other BT devices you've connected with, put the speaker in pairing mode and try again.

  • Nano won't connect

I have a customer that own's a 2012 GMC Terrain with the basic touch screen radio. When we plug into the USB port the Nano will charge, but will not function thru the radio or steering wheel controls. I used an Ipod 5th Gen and it works fine. Also going to a Terrain with the Navigation radio both the Nano and the 5th Gen I pod classic function thru radio and steering wheel controls. I checked software on Nano and it has the latest. Is this just a compatibility issue or are we missing a setting on the Nano?

yeah, it's firewire because ipod has nothing to do with firewalls, that's an internet connection thing. go to start>right click 'my computer'>click 'properties'>go to 'hardware' tab>click 'device manager' button>check if there is a red 'x' or yellow exclamation point next to something like 'ieee 1394'.. if so you likely need new/reinstall/updated drivers for your firewire hardware (which you could download from the manufacturer's website (pc manufacturer or if its a pci card that company) or possibly from a windows update). try usb if available cause it tends to work better on windows.
i apologize if the steps to device manager aren't completely correct i pulled that from memory because i'm on a mac right now (and no access to a pc) and i was assuming you are on xp.

  • My 5th Gen iPod Nano won't connect to itunes or computer, just keeps resetting. Reinstalled itunes to no avail, other ipods connect fine...help please

I re-installed i-tunes but this didn't solve the issue.  Other iPods including additional 5th generation nanos connect and sync just fine.  When it's plugged into the computer, it says "Connected...Eject before disconnecting" but doesn't show in itunes or the computer, then the ipod resets and the cycle begins again.  It plays music just fine.  It also plays fine when directly connected by USB to a Toyota Avalon.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this?  Thanks!

  • Help!  New Nano won't connect to computer

    Hope someone can help!
We bought a Nano yesterday, unfortunately haven't been able to load anything onto it as yet. The story so far:
We have downloaded itunes and set up an account. When we plug in the device the message on the ipod screen rotates between 'Connected / Ejecting / OK to disconnect' and occasionally a windows error messages pops up 'USB device not recognised - device malfunctioned'
I know it's not the computer as I've got an itunes account and my ipod is always recognised, and I've tried both USB cables with my ipod which works fine. We've also tried rebooting the Nano by holding down the Menu and middle key together, unfortunately this doesn't work either.
Has anybody got any ideas before I take it back to the store?
    Thanks!
    Karen and Mark

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, I would try manually putting the iPod into [Disk Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363] and then reconnecting it to your computer to see if that helps.
Otherwise, I would work through each and every one of the troubleshooting solutions provided below in this Apple support document. It sounds like you might have tried a few already, but make sure to attempt each one. Hope it helps.
