Nano won't update or restore in iPod Updater

-My nano when connected to my PowerBook does not show up in iTunes
-When iTunes is opened, it askes if I want to do a software update for the iPod
-In the updater, it says that it is formated in Windows, and will not allow me to restore it (saying that I need to hook up with a Firewire), nor will it let me update it (saying that only macintosh formatted ipods can be updated).
-I know that i need to restore it in OSX but it will not let me, and using the disk utility to restore it has not seemed to help.
-I tried using a windows computer to restore it, which i was able to do, but it would not let me update it on my mac.
Any suggestions?

Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Plug your iPod with your Mac, open the iPod updater and hope it will allow you to click RESTORE.
If still doesn't then
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • Updated my ipod and now it won't let me restore my iPod.

My iPod was working fine until I decided to purchase Angry Birds on the AppStore on my iPod Touch 3g. Soon after I hit install the Angry Birds  icon was grey and it wouldnt install, I turned the iPod off and when it turned on it still said "loading" on the little icon. After a little bit the screen went weird and shut off. The Apple logo kept coming up and it wouldn't go away. I looked up that issue and got it fixed, I held down home and then connected it to my computer. I went into iTunes and it told me I needed to update the software in order to restore my iPod. I updated the software and when I clicked restore it would say "Checking restoration with Apple" and it would start to go, the little loading bar comes up under the apple sign like its gonna work and then it disconnects my iPod and it says The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1611). And now under Capacity, Software Version, and Serial Number all show n/a. What happened to my Ipod and can it be fixed?

Hello, Andrea. This is what I just did with my shuffle.
Downloaded the newest updater - I think you were given the URL in the other thread. Then I installed the updater on my hard drive - this involved clicking the Continue button to get through a couple of screens.
Ran the updater. It was in my ' Applications/Utilites/iPod Software Updater.localized ' folder. I double clicked the icon for iPod Updater 2005-11-17.
Two screens came up, overlaid. The topmost was an information screen saying which software is in the updater. I quit that window. The window behind it was the application. Across the top it says to insert an iPod.
I plugged my shuffle in. The updater recognized my serial number and said the software needs updating. Since you said the program wouldn't allow you to choose Update, I did it to check. The software updated just fine. (Be sure to eject the shuffle once the Updater has gone through and finished its job.)
Right now iTunes is putting songs back on the shuffle.
Since the Updater doesn't have Continue buttons, I wonder if you only got as far as putting the Updater on your hard drive and haven't yet updated the shuffle?
    Good luck

  • Cannot update or restore my ipod

I recharged my ipod shuffle in someone else's computer and it seems because i didn't remove it using itunes it is now completely stuffed. My O/S will recognise the hardware but if i try to view the contents through windows i get either a "Insert device into drive k:" message or "incorrect I/O" message. When i run the restorer it simply freezes up the second i insert my ipod. I am extremely computer literate but I am at my wits end with this any help would be much appreciated
    Ipod Shuffle   Windows XP

I have the same problem and of course I tried the 5 R's. The driver is not missing - how can you remove a driver that is built into Windows? Let's pretend you actually can't for argument's sake You certainly wouldn't do it on purpose then ask why the hardware's not working, would you?
    1. Reset your iPod, iPod nano, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle. <-- obviously.
    2. Retry your iPod with a different USB or FireWire port on your computer (please note that the latest iPods can only be synced through USB).
<-- shouldn't matter on onboard USB ports when it worked before on the same ports.
    3. Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.
<-- Like the drivers weren't already built-in to Windows and something's going to be updated in 2006 for Windows XP USB/Flash-drive support on PC hardware from 2002? Of course I'm updated.
    4. Reinstall your iPod and iTunes software. You can download the latest versions of iPod Updater and iTunes from our website.
<-- I hadn't installed iTunes at all when the problem occurred. Why do you need iTunes itself to fix an iPOD? There's a separate Update application *that doesn't notice iTunes isn't installed when you launch it*?
If it mattered, I'd expect this application to tell me. Or it's worthless.
    5. Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater. Please note that restoring an iPod will erase all songs and files on your iPod and restore it back to its original settings. After restoring, you can transfer your music and files from your computer back to your iPod again.
<-- doesn't work, "Cannot mount iPOD" But we knew that would happen if the drive cannot be opened in Explorer.

  • Can't update or restore my ipod - please help

It only seems that i can synch my ipod when i plug it in when windows loads up. Itunes automatically loads up and my ipod synchs. But then if later i want to synch again as i have added new stuff it won't. When i try to restore it to the factory settings to try and resolve it my ipod dissapears from the list and it says restoring my ipod but nothing happens. The progress bar just goes across forever and my ipod comes out of the do not disconnect mode and i can disconnect it. Any ideas on how i can restore it please???
    Hope this makes sense!!!

  • I can't update and restore my ipod. Also it has 7.5gb wasted

    Hi,
While I was charging my ipod video (30gb), the cable got disconnected accidentally, after this, the ipod has not anymore songs, contacts, video... anything on it, everything has been deleted, but when I used itunes, in the section of the ipod appeared 7.5 gb used. Then I tried to update and restore with the last update software, but any of those worked and it always showed the same message error (error -60008), I charged the ipod again with all songs, videos, etc and it works perfectly, but there is still a problem in the memory of the ipod. There are 15gb which appear used but there are 7.5gb of those which supposted to be free but apparently contain the same files.
The ipod has 12.6 gb free

I had a similar problem last week, my ipod was showing space used but I couldn't access anything on my ipod. I put out a query here but wasn't lucky enough to get an answer. In the end I reformatted the ipod and rebuilt alll my play lists (a major job) - lesson learnt here was to back up the ipod when its running smoothly. I now use podutil from http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php
so if it crashes again (or my 3 year old pulls out the usb at a critical moment) all is not lost and it's just a matter of a quick restore.

  • PC: i-tunes won't launch, update and restore greyed out - updater freezes

Hi - Please excuse the system info below - that refers to my laptop but our sons shuffle ismarried to our PC.
I found my son's shuffle sitting on the hall dresser today and he informed me that it has not been working for some time. He's 8 years old but he's only had the shuffle since Christmas - I'm inclined to think he really hasn't been able to use it much.
First signs of a problem were flashing green and orange lights - no songs I guess. Battery shows steady green.
Downloaded and installed latest i-tunes update and i-pod updater. When the i-pod is connected to our PC (running XP) the front status light and the back battery lights both blink orange. Unfortunately, we do not have any 2.0 usb connections on the Dell but we've been able to successfully connect our other son's shuffle to the back port.
When the shuffle is connected i-tunes will not launch. If I launch i-tunes and then connect the shuffle, i-tunes does not recognize the i-pod.
With the updater lauched and then connecting the i-pod the updater freezes at 'initializing' and both update and restore buttons are greyed out.
I have reset the i-pod many times and browsed the support discussions and articles - it seems I may need to remove the updater but I have not found instructions for the process appropriate to a PC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - even if its just to say that we should bring it in for service. UGH - but where is the darned receipt?

Hey mmlise - glad to hear I'm not alone on this...
By the way - I uninstalled and reinstalled both i-tunes and i-pod updater as per Apple instructions for PC. At least this time the updater informed me as to what it updates but it is not even initializing now - it just keeps telling me to "plug in an i-pod to update it".
i-tunes still will not launch until I remove the shuffle from the usb.
I know that the usb is working (tried several other ports anyway) since windows pops up with a balloon to say that the device could perform faster on a 2.0 usb...
I've been out of the loop for awhile now on the boards - is this some sort of update bug?
    Please help...
