NAS and Verizon's MI424WR wireless router

I want to get a NAS drive for my home network but am very computer dumb.  I have 1 wireless desktop, 2 laptops, 2 smartphones, and 1 android tablet that would be sharing the content of the NAS drive.  What I want to know is can I just get a NAS and plug it into the LAN port on my router or do I need to get something else to share the contents of the NAS drive out wirelessly thoughout my home network?

That's exactly what an NAS is designed to do; just plug it into your network and you can share the storage. They usually come with some software that you run on one of your computers, or you can access an embedded Web page using any browser. This helps make it easy to configure so that the other computers can "discover" it for sharing. If your computers can "see" each other on the network -- whether they have a wired or wireless connection -- they'll be able to see the NAS device.
I'd encourage you to make sure that the NAS device supports DLNA. It's not a big deal, but this makes it simple to find music, photos, and other media files that are stored on it. It makes it easy to enjoy your favorite music on your various devices.
Also, if space permits, don't forget to use the NAS as backup storage for your computers and smartphones. People are storing more and more data on these devices -- some of it irreplaceable -- but don't back it up. Copying any critical files to the NAS device just takes a minute, and is valuable insurance against a disaster.

  • Ow can I use my time capsule as a time machine backup without using it wirelessly and not as a wireless router?

How can I use my time capsule as a time machine backup without using it wirelessly and not as a wireless router?

It is better to have the TC as part of the main network in bridge. You do not need to run wireless.
If you want to use the TC plugged in by ethernet and still use wireless for internet, that is possible but the setup is rather more complicated.. the computer must not get confused about which device to use as a gateway or dns server.
See info in this thread on setting this up.

I need to add.. a USB drive would be cheaper, faster and more reliable. It is really poor use of a TC.

  • Verizon Westell 7501 Wireless Router

I picked up the Verizon Branded Westell 7501 Wireless router.  Works great.  I like the software better then any of the the major brand wireless routers.  How do I use the USB port.  I assume it is for sharing peripherals but I don't see anything in the firmware other then if a device is connected or not.  I would like to share a printer on it if possible.  Does anyone have an idea on how to do it?  The documentation for it stinks.
    Thanks

Hi.  I am sorry you are having issues connecting your router.  I will be glad to give you the instructions and make sure it works for you.
To connect other Wireless devices to your wireless router, you will need to know your Verizon Router's network name (SSID) and Encryption key or pass phrase (WEP Key).
FYI:  The SSID appears on the bottom of your Verizon Router.  The label starts with SN and then the number.    The Encryption key or pass phrase is an alphanumeric set of characters found on the bottom of your Verizon router.  The label starts with "WEP" followed by the number.
Refer to the user manual of the device you are trying to connect.   You will just need to go into the section that explains how you access the Wifi on the device.
When you do that, it will ask you for the SSID and the WEP pass phrase.   Put that information in and continue.
Next, make sure the Wireless LED on the front of your Verizon Router is now solid or flashing green.  This may take several sections.  After that, you are connected.
Please let me know if this works for you!  Let me know if you have any additional questions.
    Thanks!

I am happy to look into this for you!  According to your printer's specifications, and page 39, of your printer's user guide, states this printer can only be direcly connected to the computer with the USB printer cable. The M1210 Series Laserjet, can connect to a network but not the M1136 MFP Laserjet printer.  Hope this answers your question, and have a nice day!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

  • Macbook and linsys wrt54g v5 wireless router

I was getting random lockups when my macbook used my wireless router. I did some research on the internet and discovered it was a very common problem. There were various solutions that seemed to work for people, but I figred one out that is very easy to do. I changed a setting in the wirless section of my router under the advanced settings.. original value for beacon interval was 100 msec I changed it to 90 msec and all is working well. No lockups on the router in 2 days so far. My firmware version on the router is 1.02.0 .
    Hope this helps someone.
Does anyone know how I can change these same settings on the macbook?

i traded with a friend of mine for a wrt54g v4 router so i could use hyperwrt firmware instead of being stuck with the linksys firmware. there was nothing compatable with v5 and i had the same problem,no problems anymore tho. v5 does suck tho, no problems with the macbook.

  • Hooked up the AirPort Extreme to a verizon actiontec gt704wg wireless router and am having many problems

I am having countless problems. Would it be smart to buy a basic dsl modem?

Setting the Airport into bridge mode won't affect the speed either way - that's a function of your internet connection and also your wireless signal. Bridge mode avoids the conflicts which arise when two routers are both trying to allocate IP numbers to the connected devices (this might cause speed loss, though more usually it simply prevents connection).
If you are only connecting wirelessly to the Airport you should if possible turn off the wireless on the Verizon as it's simply cluttering the airwaves.

  • Airport Extreme (802.11n) and ATT U-verse wireless router (2-wire)

I am attempting to use my new airport extreme with my new U-verse service. Prior to the U-verse service my router worked fine. I have to use the U-verse router as it is the brains behind the internet/TV applications of the U-verse service. I tried to run a eithernet cable from the U-verse router to the Airport Extreme, but the U-verse router says that I cannot use a third-party router behind the U-verse router. The U-verse router gives me the option to resolve the problem and it makes some configuration changes. The U-verse router show my Airport Extreme as a DMZ+ device. I can use my computers that are on the Airport Extreme network but my Xbox's will not work.
Is there a way to use the Airport Extreme as a wireless hub and not have the Airport Extreme compete with the U-verse router to assign IP addresses?
    Thanks,
    Larry
Just switched to Macs and never want to go back to Windows!

Run an ethernet cable from a spare LAN port on your "U-verse router" to one of the LAN ports on the Airport Extreme Base Station. Then run the Airport Utility, and configure the Base Station so that it does not distribute IP addresses (ie so-called "bridge mode").
What this will accomplish is allowing the "U-verse router" to perform DHCP server and internet connection sharing services for your entire LAN. The Base Station's DHCP server and router will be disabled, allowing it to function as a wired-to-wireless bridge device.

  • WDS setup with Airport Express and other(non-Apple) wireless router

    Hi,
I am trying to configure a wireless network with one airport express and one Planex Wireless access point. Can anyone please point me to the settings to be made for such a scenario? I can use either of them as the main WDS device, and have a (wired)router provided by the ISP in the network.(so total 3 devices : airport, planex a/p , ISP router)
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, both with a Linksys WRVS4400Nv2, and a WRT54G. I've not put much effort into the WRT, but the WRVS was such a pain that I don't think I can get it to work at all.
The WRT doesn't have a section on WDS, but I've read that it's supported anyways, and nothing needs to be enabled on it. Is there a good step-by-step available here or elsewhere that uses close to the same router and Airport Express units, on the latest Airport setup software?
Basically, I'm trying to set this up for a guy in an ~8000 sq. foot house so he has wireless throughout it, and he wants itunes streaming from the AX. Has anyone done this?

  • Problem with my Macbook Pro and D-Link 615 Wireless Router

Supposedly other people have had similar issues but the router doesn't seem to "like" my Macbook Pro. If i connect the mac to the modem, it runs beautifully on the internet. When I try to connect via Airport or Ethernet to the router, the internet refuses to work and connections are never completely established. The wireless doesn't work but it will find the wireless internet signal but no matter what, it won't connect. The ethernet cable says that it is connected but "may not be able to access the internet" which it can't. What in the world do I do?

I am having similar problems. I have updated firmware, set the router to g-only broadcast, have WPA personal security, tried the power down technique. What I'm experiencing is that the macbook will see the network, connect to it, browse web pages, but will only go to a certain point. IE-it will load facebook, let me log into my page, but after that anything I click on(check messages, check friend's pages) it gives me a lost connection to server error after a few minutes. Same thing with my forum group webpage. It'll let me log in and view all the forum posts, but when I try to reply to one it times out. Also cannot connect using MSN messenger for mac.

  • How do I configure an Airport Extreme base station to receive and distribute a wi-fi network from a broadband wireless router?

I have recenly upgraded my broadband service and now have a wireless router. My old network configuration was a router connected by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme base station which then broadcast my wireless network (I also had an Airport Express base staion set up as a wi-fi booster elswhere in the house).
I now have two networks (my original network and the new network from the wireless router) and wish to amalgamate these into one.
Ideally I wish to use the Airport Extreme base station as the "remote" booster (I have purchased Powerline adapters for this purpose) but don't know how to configure the Airport Extreme base station in order to to this.
Can you advise on the best set up for this please?
My Mac is running OS X 10.8.2 and the Aiport untility is version 6.1.
    Thanks in anticipation.

The AirPort Extreme should be configured to "create a wireless network" with the same WiFi network name, security type (usually WPA2 Personal) and password as your existing router. It should be configured as connection type Ethernet and be in bridge mode.

  • Wireless router and base station help

Hello fellas -- I'll really, really appreciate any help I can get with this, so thanks in advance for any advice given. Here we go...
I purchased a MacBook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 160GB hard drive, 2GB RAM) about two months ago. It runs Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.9). Previously, I had a Sony Vaio desktop in my downstairs bedroom, and an HP Pavilion desktop in my mom's office upstairs. I have Comcast "high-speed" cable internet service. Downstairs (where the Vaio was) I have a surfboard cable modem with three cords coming out of the back: 1.) a power cord (obviously); 2.) a cable cord that runs into the wall for internet service; and 3.) an ethernet-looking network cable. This ethernet/network cable would have normally run right out the back of the surfboard cable modem and into the network port on the back of my Sony Vaio, but in order to provide internet service for my mom's HP upstairs, the network cable went from the back of the surboard modem and into a D-Link wireless router that we bought. Another network cable then went from the D-Link wireless router into the network port on the back of my Vaio. This provided both my Vaio and my mom's HP with good, steady cable internet access.
When I bought this new MacBook, it came with an AirPort Extreme card (no base station yet) that allowed me pick up on the wireless signal from the D-Link wireless router and this provided me with internet service. To connect to the internet, I would connect to the wireless network that my computer called "default." By this point, I had shut down and unplugged my Vaio, so it's out of the picture now -- the MacBook has replaced it. However, I left the surfboard cable moden and the D-Link wireless router plugged in, and this way I was able to connect to the default network wirelessly with my MacBook, and my mom was still provided with wireless service from the D-Link router on her HP upstairs. This worked great for awhile, until eventually this default network started getting rediculously slow and started disconnecting itself every 30 to 45 seconds -- literally. For this reason, I went out and bought an AirPort Extreme Base Station at my local Apple Store.
First, to make sure it worked, I unplugged the network cable (the one coming from the back of the surfboard cable modem) from the back of the D-Link wireless router and I plugged it directly into the base station I just bought. In other words, I took the D-Link router out of the picture and plugged the base station directly into my surfboard cable modem. This worked great, and it's how I'm connected to the internet as we speak -- it's providing me with steady, fast service. Instead of connecting to the default wireless network that was slowing me down before, I now connect to the base station's network, called "Apple Network 2b1d46." There's only one problem, though -- it involved taking the D-Link wireless router out of the picture, so now my mom can't get on the internet with her HP. The solution seemed very simple -- instead of plugging the surfboard cable modem directly into the base station, I would plug the surfboard modem into the D-Link wireless router, and then plug that into the base station. I saw no reason why this wouldn't work, and I still don't, but for whatever reason, it didn't.
This is where I need help. When I try to plug it in through the router like that, I simply can't get on the internet. Everything else works perfectly -- the surfboard cable modem's lights are properly lit, as are the D-Link router's lights. The Apple base station's status light is a solid green like it's supposed to be, and strangest of all -- when I open Internet Connect to check my AirPort status, everything is fine there as well. It says "Connected to Apple Network 2b1d46," which is the new base station network that I should be connected to, and under that it says "Connected to the internet via Ethernet," yet when I try to open Safari, it says "You are not connected to the internet," which is in direct contradiction to what Internet Connect is simultaneously telling me (that I am connected to the internet).
I've tried alot of things to trouble-shoot this. I've tried FireFox and Opera, and they can't bring up any web pages either, so I know the problem isn't just with Safari -- it's that my computer just can't connect to the internet or bring up web pages, even though Internet Connect and everything else says that it's connected. I've also run the Network Diagnostics an uncountable amount of times, and all it can tell me, in all its wisdom, is that my internet connection appears to be working fine and that I must have spelled "www.apple.com" (my home page) incorrectly (it says the same thing about any other web page I try to open). I've ran the network assistant to create a new location, and it also gets the the end of the wizard and tells me that it can't connect to the internet. Finally, I've also ran the AirPort Utility multiple times and set up the base station in every possible way, but still nothing works.
On that note, I do have one question. When you run the AirPort Utility and choose "Assist Me", at one point during the wizard it asks, "How do you connect to the internet?" Right now, remember, I have the D-Link wireless router taken out of the picture (the base station is plugged directly into the surfboard cable modem). For the answer to this part of the wizard, I chose the option that says, "I use a DSL or cable modem with a static IP address or DHCP." Obviously, given that I'm on the internet as we speak, this is working fine. However, if I bring the D-Link wireless router back into the picture and plug the base station into it (the router), and then plug the router into the surfboard modem, should I still have the same option checked (the one thats says I use a DSL or cable modem with a static IP address or DHCP), or by connecting through the router, should I change my answer to one of the other two options. The second option says, "I use a DSL or cable modem using PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)." The third option says, "I connect to my local area network (LAN)." I've tried all three numerous times, and none of them work -- I still have the same problem getting on the internet once I connect through the D-Link router, but I thought I could at least find out which one is the right option so I could stop having to keep trying all three of them. Can anyone tell me which of those three options I should pick when connecting through the D-Link wireless router (cable modem with static IP address or DHCP, cable modem with PPPoE, or local area network).
Sorry, I know that was a long one, but if anyone can answer the previous question for me and/or give me some general advice regarding my problem with getting the internet to work once I hook up the base station through the router instead of directly into the cable modem, I would appreciate it more than you can imagine.
Thank you very much for your time and help.
    -- Andrew

I am doing something similar. I have the WAN port on my Linksys 4-port wired router connected to my DSL modem. My G5 and G4 computers are connected directly to the Linksys LAN ports. My older Airport Extreme (flying saucer) is connected to another LAN port on the Linksys. I had to setup the Airrport as a bridge in this configuration. I did this by using the Ethernet LAN port on the Airport instead of the WAN port. In the Airport Setup Utility I said to connect using Ethernet. This seems to work for me.
I also use manual IP addresses for everything but you will probably want to use DHCP.
    Cheers,

I connect to my secure wireless router network...while idle it connects to an unsecure network which is weak...I have to continually go to network selections and reconnect to my wireless router network.
