NAS-based Time Machine, Snow Leopard and new backups

Hi all,
I have a new NAS server (Netgear ReadyNAS) and have configured my Snow Leopard MBP to use it for its Time Machine backups.
I create the first backup over gigabit ethernet, and subsequent backups occur over wifi.
This happens as normal for about a week or so, until the following error appears:
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.”
So, twice now, I've duly plugged in my MBP and it starts a backup from scratch, copying the usual 450ishGB over onto my NAS. I then disconnect, and the backup works fine for a week or so, until the error appears again.
The only blogpost or help article I could find relating to this is here: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html but when I follow that process, I get the ultimate error:
"** The volume Time Machine Backups could not be repaired."
The backups are perfectly sound - I do a test restore of a random file daily - but this error is very annoying.
Any ideas as to how I could repair it? Or as to what might be going wrong on my backup volume?

I keep getting this error on my new Macbook Pro w/ Retina.
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."
Connected to a wifi network and QNAP storage system. There are 5 computers on this network, and each backs up just fine. The issue is isolated to this one machine.
This error shows up every week or so.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.
I'm useing Mac OSX 10.7.3
Since a few days, I've some trouble with Time Machine. When TM would create a new backup in the normal hourly loop it creates the following message:
Time machine has completed the review of its backups. To improve the reliability time machine must create a new backup. (i hope it's the correct translation in englich)
Now I've to options:
1. I can create a new backup later
2. create a new backup
Does anyone knows what is wrong? I don't want to create a new backup, I want to use the old one.
I still have enough space on my backup volume. I'm using the Airport Extreme and a WD hard drive.

Unfortunately, the issue is that the wireless connection isn't fast enough. The error is saying that basically its going to take too long to do the work.
Not sure how apple makes the time capsule faster,but apparently it works.
Apple suggested configuration is either by a direct USB or FireWire connection, or use a time capsule.
Linc is correct in his last post. You can actually plug in your USB drive at random intervals and time machine will see it and do its thing. This will probably work better in the long run, even though you haven't had any issues up until now.

You really can't.
That's not one of Apple's clearest messages; it means your backups are damaged beyond OSX's ability to repair them. See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.

Help - upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard AND new larger hard drive, MBP

Howdy!
My iPhone has finally demanded that I upgrade my MBP from Tiger. And as if by coincidence, my now puny 100GB internal drive is packed full with less than a gig free most of the time. (10% free is the MINIMUM free allowance, I know!!) I run old copies of Adobe CS2, Quark, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office... would love to keep them working without purchasing upgrades, but probably isn't a realistic hope. None of it is mission critical at this point.
So I've purchased the $29 Snow Leopard DVD (from a reseller - it says CPU Drop-In DVD Version 10.6 on the disk), and a new 750GB internal drive (same reseller - The drive is a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM 8MB-Buffer Hard Drive (9MM Slim) (RoHS Green Friendly)), to get with the times.
My other resources include:
- two 1TB LaCie external drives with FW and USB2 ports
- one other LaCie external drive - I think 360GB?
- Retrospect 5.0 (most of my backups are encrypted Retrospect files on those three LaCie external drives, but there's some room on them)
- a $22 USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter with AC power, to access whatever laptop drive might be without an enclosure temporarily
- a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software
- I just ordered an upgrade to my ancient (OS9) copy of DiskWarrior
- A monster UPS battery backup and line conditioner that everything plugs into for this process
It has been a long time since I've DIY'd any undertaking this complex, and I'm looking for advice on what to do first, how to go about this.
Here's my setup:

I'm guessing I should do it like this, PLEASE EDIT or make suggestions or tell me what I forgot to do before I do it!!
1. Back up everything to at least two external locations! Also, make a bootable copy of my current internal drive in its own volume, to at least one external drive that is formatted in HFS+ GUID partition style, with Carbon Copy Cloner (would Retrospect work well for this instead?).
2. Free up at least 20GB on the current internal drive (100GB). Hopefully 30GB.
3. Run Disk Utility on the current internal drive. Fix any problems. (Should I hit it with DiskWarrior instead?)
4. Format the new 750GB drive to HFS+, GUID partitions. (How long will that take? Can I do it with the USB-SATA cable adapter, sitting on my desk, or does it have to be in an enclosure? The adapter has AC power)
5. Run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior?) on the new internal drive in its temporarily external position. Fix any problems.
6. Boot off the Snow Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD and install onto both drives. (Will this version of the DVD I have wipe all files when it installs to a disk???)
7. See how they run. Boot off the old 100GB internal drive, boot off the new to-be-internal 750GB drive. Panic if it's not going well.
8. If the current internal 100GB drive is rocking Snow Leopard and my familiar files and apps seem somewhat functional, use Carbon Copy Cloner to recreate the volume on the new larger drive. Then swap the drives physically. (Links to good step-by-step instructions on this part would be much appreciated here!!)
9. If the Snow Leopard DVD overwrote or snuffed out my familiar files and apps on the old internal drive, sigh deeply, then swap the drives physically. Use CCC (or Retrospect? or Migration Assistant?) to fetch my junk from the old internal drive's backup and plunk it on the new bigger internal drive (now installed).
10. See how it runs. Shake my fist at the sky over the planned obsolescence of technology paired with the seductive power of my iPhone. Grumpily upgrade the software that I actually create income with.
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?

1. Yes, absolutely... no CCC would be best in my experience/opinion.
2. Yes, the more he better... Free Space is no longer our Free Space, but OSX's.
3. Indeed, & if you have the correct version of DW, do that.

6. Yes, boot off the 10.6 DVD, & no Snow Leopard does by default what we used to call an Archive & Install, saves & updates all your info, APPs, Music, etc., it may quarantine a few things or not but will tell you.
7. Absolutely, but Panic won't be needed with your great preparation & Bootable Backups!
8. Not quite sure I understand, but run SL for a few days before you do anything.

Snow Leopard and new hard drive

I want to install a new hard drive in my MacBook and then restore from Time Machine. After I install the new hard drive do I have to reboot from the original OS X disk that came with my MacBook or can I just use the new Snow Leopard disk and restore from time machine?
If I can't reboot right from the Snow Leopard Disk would I have to restore from the original disk, then install Snow Leopard and then restore from time machine?

not sure where & how to start a conversation with you but here it is: bought a time capsule 2 weeks agao... tried to handle the whole thing by myself... however can't access hte message that says "which disk would you like to save your files too?" it just won't make that step... yet the green light is on... I did put snow leopard on... another thing don't see my time capsule in the finder left column??? any great ideas? can't wait to start with my TC... thnak you

Time Machine & Snow Leopard Question

I am going to be doing a clean install of Snow Leopard and using my Time Machine backup to restore my data. The question is, after SL is installed and I have it working as intended, will it happily continue to back up to my current Leopard 10.5.8 Time Machine volume, or will it insist on erasing the volume and starting fresh again?
I don't want to lose about 10 months of backups, if SL is going to create a brand new TM archive. Perhaps those brave people who have installed SL could confirm what happens...

There's nothing in the documentation about any significant changes to TM, with the single exception that initial backups will be faster. In fact, all the support articles in the Snow Leopard support area are the old Leopard articles: http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/
There have also been no reports of anything remotely like this from any of the Beta testers or preview articles; there's nothing about it in the SL installation guide: http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Snow_Leopard_InstallationInstructions.pdf
And, of course, it would not be like Apple to intentionally blow away your backups with no warning whatsoever.
But, if you do an Erase and Install (there is no "clean install") for some reason, then TM will probably back up all your data again, just as it does under Leopard. If your TM disk isn't at least twice as large as the data it's backing-up, the backup will fail and you will have to erase the TM disk.

My Fantom backup drive is failing. I want to copy the time machine contents to a new backup drive and continue on as if nothing has happened. Can I do this and if so how? I have intel iMac running Mountain Lion. Fantom Drive via Firewire 800.

Before I do that I want to copy the time machine contents to a new drive and then use it for the backup, continuing on as if nothing had gone wrong with the first drive. Can I do this? Is it as simple as duplicating the first drive and replacing it with the second? New drive arrives Tuesday PM and both drives have dual firewire 800 ports.

I have used the Disk Utility to verify the contents of the backup drive so I don't think I have any corrupt files. The drive just takes a minute or so to spin up to speed. If I turn it off and then back on, it beeps at me for a few seconds and then starts it's slow process of trying to spin. I think it's a power problem not a data problem. I have my fingers crossed that it holds on until Tuesday PM when the new drive arrives. I'm thinking that my two options are to duplicate the bad drive or partition the new drive and put the old backups on one partition and start afresh on the second partition. Any input?

Dual boot machine- snow leopard and Lion

It appears I will need to set up one of my machines as dual boot, containing partitions for Snow Leopard and Lion. The reason is that Quicken is NOT compatible with Lion, and will apparently never be. Intuits "solutions" are to go to other, far less capable software, or not upgrade. Which, of course means, NEVER upgrade again.
So, I think my best solution is to set up a partition for snow leopard and one for Lion. How do I go about this? Size of partition. How to partition? Which boot disks do I use to do this?
Any help is much appreciated.

Ok, I just got done doing this yesterday so I can lay it out for you.
1: Copy all your user files to a regular external drive and disconnect.
2: Carbon Copy Cloner your 10.6.8 setup to another blank HFS+Journaled external drive and disconnect.
3: Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and erase your entire boot drive in Disk Utility (under the Utilities menu) format HFS+Journaled (default) of course.
4: Quit and install 10.6. Setup with the same user name as Snow. Run the 10.6.8 Combo Update. Then Software Update.

5: Use the MacAppStore to download Lion, BUT DO NOT INSTALL yet! Cancel it and click on the Installer and select "Show in Finder" follow these instructions to make boot DVD's and dmg images of Lion installer.

6: Once you do that, then Install Lion. On a pristine 10.6.8 with no third party programs or other BS it should go perfectly. Check it out that it's stable just in case or else hold command r and boot into the Recovery Partition and redownload/install again.
7: Once that's done and Software Updated, run Bootcamp and create a Windows partition larger than your 10.6.8 clone naturally. The size is up to you to decide. Cancel the Bootcamp when the partition is created.
8: Hold Option and boot off the 10.6.8 clone with all your stuff and programs, use Disk Utility to change the "BOOTCAMP" partition to "Snow Leopard" and make it a HFS+ Journaled partition from the MSDOS format (not the whole drive now or you'll lose Lion and the Recovery Partition) If this doesn't work then use Disk Utility c booted from the 10.7 DVD or command r from the Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility there.
9: Once that's done, Option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and Carbon Copy Clone 10.6.8 onto the Snow Leopard partition.
Walla, a dual boot system with all your stuff intact. Just hold option upon boot and/or use the Startup Disk in System Preferences to set a default.
I'm currently working on a quad boot system now. It's got Lion, Snow, Linux and will have Windows too. A lot more complicated than simply Snow and Lion.
Note: OS X Lion reguires a internet connection to install, even from a boot DVD.

Time Machine after reinstall and new user acct

3 TB eSATA drive used for months as TM back up. Drive had 300GB or so free space available after last B/U before having to format my boot drive.
Following reinstall of OS 10.9.2,I was not able to transfer user files using TM after several trials - it simply locked up with no error message. So, I skipped using B/U and created a new uswer account with same name as previous user account but with a new password. I then used the last B/U to manually restore user files and selected Apps.
In System Preferences/Time Machine, I selected the same 3 TB TM drive I had been using and left the excluded items unchanged. The B/U calcualted size was 2.72 TB, the same as before my set up with new user account. Prior to starting a new B'U I checked TM and found B/Us going back for quite a few weeks.
The next B/U for lack of space, with the mnessage that I only had 1.12 TB of space and the B/U needed 1.26 TB. I recalled that I had added some items to one of the included external drives prior to the restore and after the last B/U, so I excluded those new additions. The next B/U also failed and now the required space for the B/U was listed as greater than the first attempt. More disturbing, the ONY remaining B/U on the 3 TB drive now, after several mnore effrots to exclude as much as possible, is the last B/U I did before the format and restore process.
In Finder, the TM disk shows 1.12 TB free. It lists 2 B/Us - the last successful one and one fron this mornign listed as inprogress.
I changed my user account password to be the same as previously and logged out then bac in, then tried rebotting and after both times, the same failure occurred. I used Sstem OPreferences to unselct the 3 TB drive and select another one, then reselected the 3 TB again - still no joy.
It appears that TM is unable to add to the exsiting B/U and is trying to create a new one, or that it doesn't see existing files in the old B/U as the same as the new ones and is trying to create lots of duplicates.

A supplementray question:
I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

Snow Leopard and new HD

So I have an 08 MacBook..
I bought snow leopard and it wouldn't install..
I took it to apple and they said it was because my HD is going bad.
So I bought a new HD and now I am wondering..
Will the snow leopard disk work?
Because it is the upgrade disk would I need my original disk?
Another I was wondering is if I would be able to use my sisters disk.. She bought a MacBook about 2 months ago and it came with snow leopard.

If you bought the Snow Leopard disk as a retail disk from Apple, it will do a clean install - you don't need to use it as an upgrade. Once the HD is properly installed, you should be able to boot from the DVD, run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then continue with the install.
Your sister's Macbook disks are actually less likely to work, since Mac-specific install disks don't usually work on other models.

I bought the new Apple 2 TB Time Capsule thinking it would be a great way to get a powerful wireless router and handle file backup for both me and my wife's iMacs. She is running an up-to-date version of Snow Leopard and I am on the most recent update of Mountain Lion. The Time Capsule was installed and running by the first of August and we had no problems until this monday (7 weeks later) when I got the message that "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability Time Machinge must create a new backup" My wife's back up was still ok but I had to go though the 5-6 hour process of re-copying all my files(using an ethernet connection) to the device. All went smoothly for a few days until I got the same message again about creating a new backup. Also my wife cannot enter her time machine files even though the computer is still being backed up. We have a stable internet service and both computers recieve a strong signal from the router. Is it possible that the Time Capsule Drive is defective? Is there any sort of maintenance such as zpping the PRAM that would help? This is really frustrating as it looks like the timemachine backup is totally unreliable and not worth fooling with. Is there any way to use the storage capability of the time capsule without going through time machine?

rest assured you are not alone. i have the same problem and i hate it with a passion. in fact, i am the victim of this message as of 20 minutes ago and doing a full backup as I am typing this. I am so overly ****** that I actually posted here and will be calling or emailing apple next because I cannot take this anymore. the problem lies in time machine and unfortunately, there is no fix for that. time machine is the best idea of apple with the worst implementation ever. you have no obligation to use time capsule to benefit from time machine as this would not be legal anyway. i will give you 2 temporary solutions and let you decide which one works best for you:
1) open time machine preferences and turn automatic backups off. create a new full backup from scratch and only backup manually whenever you remember, preferably every day. the automation process is the problem that lies within time machine. also make sure that your system does not go to standy or sleep whatever that may be called. Power nap, despite all claims, is not compatible with time machine. install CAFFEINE, an app that keeps your mac awake and prevents from going to sleep while back up is in progress. use it like this and pray it will all go fine for a long time. you may wish to duplicate the first full backup to save time in case this should happen again so you have a base to start on
2) install CCC (carbon copy cleaner) I have not used it myself yet, but probably will be installing it after finishing this post. it is claimed to be better, yet it is yet to be seen by me personally.
unless time machine can be trained without any addons to use a specific wifi only for backup, these issues will persist.
