Nas drive to airport?

I have a wireless linksys wrt54g router. This connects to an Airport Express which is hooked up to speakers through which I am able to play iTunes from my Powerbook wirelessly.
Hard drive is getting full. My question is this:
Can I buy a Nas drive to connect to my wireless router that I can use to store all my music to free up room on my laptop, and play music from it through AE?
Cheers
Brad

Looking at the Iomega 500GB Minimax HD the last user review reports that this works with Airport Extreme, even though the product is not advertised as NAS.
Can anyone confirm if this is true, and whether it would work with linksys wrt54g?

  • Setting up Simpleshare NAS Drive with Airport Extreme

I've had an Airport Extreme wireless network used by all my Macs for a number of years now. As far as I've been able to see there is basically no security enabled and it should be playing nice with everything.
    However....
I just purchased two SimpleTech SimpleShare NAS drives (one for myself and another for a friend) and have tried both on my home network (one at a time) but no luck at all.
When I use the recommended way to connect to the drive "Cmd K and enter smb://Simpleshare" I keep getting told 'could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct." If I go through the Network Browser it claims "the alias cannot be found..." I've discovered the actual IP being used by the drive and tried directly entering it but no luck.
These drives are Mac compatible and should basically be plug and play, however, something on my Mac or the Airport or preventing the drive and my Mac Book Pro (10.4.8) from communicating.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!!

Michael Miller of SimpleTech emailed me back the following and it has fixed my problems once and for all. I accessed the drive via Safari and the IP address of the NAS drive and then installed a new firmware update (that is not available on their website drive page yet) and rebooted the machine and viola! it works.
Please try typing smb://simpleshare/config. If you can get into that, then loading the new firmware I’ve listed below should correct the additional problems you are experiencing.
Here is a link to the 1.09 firmware. Load this firmware and RESET your drive to complete the fix.
    http://www.simpletech.com/support/downloads/firmware/simpleshare/simpleshare-1-0 9.trx
Installation instructions for the firmware can be found at this link:
    http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_faq-simpleshare.php#Q12
When the blue light returns, after loading the firmware, please RESET the drive. To RESET you will need a paperclip or similar. Press and hold the RESET button for 10sec, rear of the simpleshare beneath the power button. When the blue light returns again you should be able to run NasFinder and map the drive successfully.
Listed below are the changes in the new 1.09 firmware. If you prefer to use the older 1.07 firmware you can reload it at this time.

  • Using a Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive on the Airport Extreme 802.11n

I used the Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive on the previous Airport Extreme. I just upgraded to the new Airport Extreme and cannot get it to work. Buffalo support, after a two hour wait and and a 40 minute conversation, decided that it wouldn't work. If it worked on the older Airport Express, I think it should work on this one.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get this NAS drive hooked up to the Router?
    Thanks,

According to their website, the NewerTech miniStack should work too.
It has the advantage of having a built in USB hub to attach other devices(i.e.a printer.)

  • Airport Extreme with attached NAS drive

I have Airport Extreme connected by ethernet to my sky broadband router. Am thinking of attaching a NAS drive to AE in order to move itunes library from my MacBook (to free up space). Has anyone done this and any recommendations for which drive to use.

Yes, most NAS's come without a HD.
And yes, you connect the NAS to your Airport Extreme by an ethernet cable. I don't have my iTunes library on the NAS, but I'm pretty sure new music will be put directly on the NAS. Having to move it every time you buy something new is very clumsy and not Apple-like
You can either connect your TV to the Airport Extreme by an ethernet cable, but that may be a difficult option if these are in separate rooms.
You can also connect your TV to your Airport Express. I assume your home theatre is connected to the jack connecter on the Express. Then you can connect your TV with a ethernet cable to the Airport Express. At home, I have my TV connected this way to the Express and can easily stream movies from my QNAP to my TV. In your situation with the iTunes library on the NAS, you can also stream video from iTunes to your TV.
    Please make sure that:
    1) your TV has an ethernet connector
    2) your TV supports media servers (DLNA or UPnP) if you want to stream directly from your NAS (if you are going to stream video from iTunes, this isn't important)

  • Airport Extreme - NAS Drives or External USB?

I'm looking at getting an Airport Extreme for my house but I wanted to know the best options.. Should I go with a couple of 2TB NAS Drives or two 2TB External USB Drives?
I have one MacBook Pro, one Windows Gaming Machine and one Windows XP SP3 Netbook.
WIll there be compatibility issues between using NAS over USB or..?
One finaly question as well, I know this is an Apple based forum/ site but its definitely worth asking.. Anyone confirmed that Android works with the Airport Extremes?
    Cheers

Thats a good thing to hear because there are 3 Nexus's that are in the household.
I am very torn between the Express and the Extreme.. I just wish the Express was a little bit more money and offered the Harddrive support! That's all I need it for

  • Maxtor NAS drive used on Airport Express at Timemachine Volume

Does anybody know if it is possible to use an airport express with a NAS drive and use it as a volume for timemachine. Currently I have the drive attached to my timecapsule as a NAS drive. I would like to hide away the airport express with the maxtor attached for security reasons.

Thanks for the post. I was trying to connect a ethernet drive (Maxtor 1TB NAS mass storage drive) that I have now got working wirelessly. This drive is formatted with a linux file system that you are unable to reformat so it is not possible to use as a timemachine volume, however it is great for saving back ups of movies etc and using over the net as I have now set it to do.

  • Purchased TV and Movie artwork not showing in iTunes 10.6.1 when stored on a NAS drive

    Hi All
Having searched through the forums here and using Google to cast a wider net.
I am still struggling to see if there is a solution to the missing artwork of TV programmes or films missing when stored on a NAS drive.  All the TV programmes and movies have been purchased through the iTunes store.
The version of iTunes being used is the most recent (10.6.1).
The network drive is hardwired linked to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, this base station is also hardwire linked to the iMac.  The iTunes library resides upon a DROBO FS and has done since it filled the storage capabilities of the iMac.
TV and Films purchased before the migration of the library has the artwork, it is just films and programmes purchased since the migration that don't.
Clicking "Get Album Artwork" has no effect, the same is also true for manually adding the artwork to each episode through the "Get Info" "Artwork" option.  Although the "Get Info" route teases you with an apparent result only to have the artwork "vanish" when you save.
I have seen a solution that involves remapping the iTunes library to the iMac each time you want to download a TV programme or film and then remounting the NAS drive and consolidating the library again, http://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/fix-missing-album-art-when-using-a-nas- with-itunes/
This doesn't strike me as much of a solution and doesn't address the TV programmes and films that have already been downloaded.
I am hoping someone in the community is aware of a solution or at least method that is a little more elegant than the one linked to above.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

The Apple TV 1 doesn't use homesharing.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • NAS drives grayed out and can't connect to other Macs

    Hello All,
After upgrading my 15-inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro to Mavericks (10.9 13A603) my NAS storage drives are grayed out in Finder. I can't go directly to my NAS drive in Finder. I can't simply click on the NAS drives in Finder and see what is in the directory. The directories are grayed out!.
In order for me to connect to my NAS stotage drive I have to go to "DEVICES" on the leftside of the Finder window and then click on the MacBook Pro HD. From there I have to click on "Network." From "Network" I can get a slow connection to my NAS.
As for as connection to other Macs in my office, I have to take the same steps above. I can't connect directly to the other Macs in my office in Finder. Nether can the other Macs connect to other Macs! All Macs in the office are set up to allow both AFP and SMB. However, one lonely 2009 iMac in our office is still on Mountian Lion and it can connect to other Macs and the our NAS without problems.
One strange things this, I can do a Screen Share to the other Macs from my 2010 MacBook Pro! I can't connect directly in Finder, but I can do a Screen Share. Strange!
Is there a fix for this or was Marverick let out the jungle to earily?
    Help! and Thanks!

I forgot to add that everything was previously connected via an Airport express wireless system. I just got an Airport Extreme system which hasn't changed things a bit.

  • I want to store/play music from a NAS drive is this possible?

I have iTunes 10.3.1 on my iMac and can broadcast around the house over my Airport Extreme to my two Airport Expresses.  Remote app works great.  Now I want to store music on a NAS drive in the hope I can use that as a server to avoid having to keep my iMac running.  Is this possible?  Hard drive is connected via USB to Airport Extreme.  NAS drive hold both CD's as WAV files and a copy of iTunes 10.3.1.  Remote app simply doesn't see the NAS.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Andy

  • Thinking about storing my iPhoto and iTunes on a NAS Drive

    Hi,
I am thinking about buying a LaCie Network Space MAX NAS Drive and I just wanted to know if anyone else is using one and can provide some insights or advice. I have a the following set up:
    - Macbook pro
    - Macbook air
    - Apple TV
    - Airtport Extreme
    - 2 x iPhones
    - iPhoto album over 150Gb
    - iTunes library over 800Gb
I have been running the iPhoto and iTunes off a 1.5tb USB WD external hard drive attached to the Airport USB. It has been working but has been slow but a few days ago the drive became corrupt. I have been able to recover the data but I am now looking at other options for storing iPhoto and iTunes externally.
I can't help but think I am not the only person in this situation. I find managing these large data libraries really annoying and I think apple should be offering a better solution to this problem. I think most peoples' iTunes and iPhoto libraries are too big or getting too big to run on a portable computer's internal hard drive. Anyway that is my moan for this post.
Does anyone have any ideas on a good set up for this situation? And if you are using a LaCie Network Space MAX drive is it working for you?

Same exact problem in my case... thinking same Lacie Network Space could help...
    Any idea ?

  • Transferring my iTunes library to a NAS drive

    Hello All,
I currently have my iTunes media files on an attached USB hard drive off the back of my Mac but would like to move it to a NAS off my Airport Extreme so a second Mac and the upcoming iTV can all access the media.
Can I simply copy the files to the NAS and make a copy of the /User/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library file, reboot and point Itunes to the new location then overwrite the new iTunes Library file with my older, copied version?
Is this the correct procedure? My thanks in advance for your help.
    Warren

I have my iTunes library running on an external hard drive attached to my airport extreme via USB. You should be able to just plug the drive in, go into iTunes prefs, and go to the advanced tab. Point iTunes to the new location of your library, and let it consolidate. It doesn't really copy anything, so it moves very quick.
This worked for me. Just be careful that you remain connected to the drive before you start iTunes. Otherwise iTunes has this TERRIBLE habit of reverting the iTunes library location to the default home folder location. Its easy enough to change back, but it is a pain.

  • Nas drive and no album art on the mac

I started all this buying a touch. Then a nas drive netgear nv+ then 1 mac mini then airport extreme and express. I started this itunes on a pc and still have a library 60 cd's on it that is loaded on the nas. I am loading about 4000 cd's on the nas and have started that now with the mac mini(100 more cd's). No artwork shows up and non of the other cd's I loaded on the nas from the pc show up either.
My end result is ti have two or three zones controllable by i phones or touch that have all the music available on the sound systems attached to expresses or mini mac's. I am told I have to have a computor attached to each zone-zone being something I can listen to different than another zone. The netgear nas says it can do this with itunes and I have firefly turned on the itunnes server. I love the touch interface as it is what I want to use. I sell high end audio for a living and need the good sound around the house-all aiff files please help as I have taken the apple plunge and do not want to return to pc
I want the album art to show up and all the albums to show up on any computor of touch or apple tv in the house and be able to play it's own thing.
    Thanks

All of my MP3 files already have album art added to them, but even better would be for the Zen to use 'folder.jpg' in the folder of the album as WMP does, if that were possible. That would save the filesize of each file in an album having to be increased by having album art attached to every single one. But album art support in any form at all would be brilliant!

i don't have any experience with DLNA TV's but i recently moved my iTunes library to a NAS. streaming content to airport express remote speakers and TV2 works great. however, i have all my gear hardwired to my time capsule (except the airport express) so i'm not sure how well streaming e.g. HD movies to TV over wifi works.
i have a Synology DiskStation 411j and am very happy with it.

  • NAS drive-does it matter how connected to network?

I have a La Cie NAS drive connected via ethernet to my Speedtouch modem. The modem is connected by ethernet to Airport Extreme BS. There are 3 desktops and two laptops on the network. Does it make any difference if I were to connect the network drive to the WAN port of the Airport BS?

Not positive, but don't think the WAN port will work... isn't that where your Modem is plugged into?

  • Time capsule and NAS drive Problem

Currently have my TC connected to my wireless router via its only ethernet port.  I want to add a NAS drive but as there is no port left onthe router, can I use one on the TC??

Does your cable modem have an Ethernet port? If it does, then connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the TC. You do not need to use the WiFi from the cable modem. The TC will provide both wired and wireless networks. The second NAS can be connected via Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the TC.
I use just a cable modem (it does not provide any routing - it's a Motorola SurfBoard) connected by Ethernet cable to the WAN port on an Airport Extreme Base Station which is basically the TC's router but without an internal hard drive. Then any Ethernet device connects to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS.
