NAS for macbook

Im considering getting the D-Link DNS-323 for my wireless network to be my backup for Time Machine.
Anybody has used this with their macs? I read that there is a software to install before you can access the NAS. I wonder if it can be used with OSX or only for windows.

Apple doesn't support anything other than a TimeCapsule, but it works just fine. I wouldn't recommend trying it with CIFS (ACL and other issues), but NFS has been working for me for a while. All that's required if you want to take off the training wheels is:
*defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1*
from Terminal. Note that you won't be able to do a cold recovery directly from the install disks, but I'd suggest creating a bootable clone of your drive on a USB disk anyway for that exercise in any case. Most Linux based home a small business NAS appliances can export NFS "shares".
TM is also quite happy to use a globalSAN iSCSI disk (formatted hfs+ by Disk Utility) just like it uses a USB drive without any changes. It seems quite happy if the backing store is sparse/thin provisioned as well providing the NAS box does that transparently for iSCSI targets. However I expect that it's not supported by Apple either and again recovery assumes you've got the globalSAN initiator loaded and available.
What might be supported is exporting a USB drive via iSCSI, having TM back up to it via network, and the unplugging it and plugging it dirctly into the MacBook for recovery. TM needs the HFS ACL's to work properly.
Note that wireless networks are far more susceptible to interference and backing up that way is just asking for trouble IMHO, to a TC or not.

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.

Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • Itunes 9 on a NAS for Windows and Mac

I have read dozens of posts here but cannot find the answer so hoping to get this cleared up once and for all.
I have a NeadyNAS NV+ where my "My Music" folder exists.
The NAS has a Firefly iTunes server
I have a Win7 desktop, Vista laptop and two Macbooks all running iTunes 9.0x
Originally I had the main iTunes on the Win7 desktop pointing to the NAS for the dataset. My playlists, etc were all local. I moved everything to the NAS and pointed my Win7 machine to the NAS and it works fine.
I want to share the collection across the network. I tried to get the Firefly working and I have activated the SHARING feature in iTunes... neither works. On the Mac, I see the Itunes server under the SHARED list but when I click on it, there list is blank. I have change the prefs to point to both \My Music and \My Music\itunes and while it sees the folders, it does not see the content.
When I use the "Share" option and point it to my Win7 machine I can see and play music but that defeats the purpose as it needs to point to and play from the NAS. Again, I can set up the UNC but the file does not appear in the playlist.
I am more than happy to blow the whole installation away and start from scratch but thought I would see if anyone can explain why and the step-by-step to resolve this.
    Thanks very much

Yes in theory it should work but it does not. Let me try to be more clear
I have all my media on the NAS. I know all the machines can connect to the NAS as it is my primary file sharing device.
I have iTunes 9.x on all my machines. I have enabled Home Sharing and logged in with my active account
Under the Shared list (right side) I have: "DR library" which is the local library on a regular Macbook, Itunes server (the Firefly on the NAS) and Home Sharing. I highlight Home Sharing, go to Prefs to set the point to the NAS and select the \my music\itunes folder
On my MBA and my macbook, when I select HOME SHARING and try to point to the NASA, it seems to work then, all of a sudden the Home Sharing option disappears on the right.
It should be pretty simple and maybe I am missing the obvious but this is driving me crazy

  • Backup for macbook air

What would you suggest as the best set-up for NAS & backup?
I want my photos, music, documents etc. on the NAS so I can access media and data on my iPhone and ATV when the MBA is asleep or on the road somewhere. Am confused by all the different posts regarding Time Machine backups, incompatible NASs, etc.
    - I have a new Macbook Air (with ac) so will replace my last-generation dlink router: suggestions?
    - Will buy a NAS for data/media storage rather than an attached drive. Am considering the WD My Cloud (prob. 2TB - am not saving many videos)
    - Would appreciate suggestions for a backup system for all of this. Priority is on saving photos, documents and other data from catastrophic loss (theft, fire). But need to back-up both the MBA (apps etc. and whatever data's on it at the time) and the NAS.
I know there are numerous options, but is there a best practice? As I've said, I'm having trouble deciphering the best practice from previous posts.
    Cheers.

Wireless backups are very attractive. Apple has its TimeCapsule and many other manufacturers have followed with network accessible services of various types to offer wireless backup solutions of their own. One issue I've seen is that OS upgrades sometimes break 3rd party compatibility. Sometimes for a short while and sometimes much longer. Further, some solutions aren't; they back up for a while and then suddenly TimeMachine starts erroring out and the only thing to do is delete and start over. That's not a solution - it is a disaster. For a non-techie and for those who aren't willing to get their hands a little tech-dirty the best and safest wireless solution is Apple's TimeCapsule.
My personal solution is much lower tech. My MBA spends a lot of time in one of two places. At work the first thing I do is plug it into my USB hub and a USB drive begins its first TimeMachine backup of the day. At home it sits on the end table next to me. I screwed two aluminim bands underneath the table which hold a USB drive in place. First thing I do when I get home is put the computer down, plug in the drive, and let TimeMachine do a backup while the dog and I enjoy our afternoon walk. I love the idea of wireless backups. I've tested many different solutions and wound up going low tech anyway.
TimeMachine is great but it isn't my only backup solution. I also have a clone backup and I use CarbonCopyCloner for that. If my drive dies the clone lets me get right back to work. It gets updated much less frequently than the TM backup but at least once a week.

  • The normal value of battery capacity for macbook pro

    Hi there,
I noticed my battery full charge capacity value is way below the technical specification from Apple.
    For macbook pro 15" early 2011 version a 77.5W battery is built-in.
However, so far after 4 cycle, my full charge capacity is 6913mAh.
It seems that I missed something. Though I didn't really notice the initial value when it's brandnew.
Statistically what's the average value of the new battery will be ? around 75W or 7500mAh? Any idea?

  • I bought the wrong version as I need it for macbook pro but somehow bought windows...help

I guess I will have to wait until normal office hours.  I have no idea why it bought the window version as I did not realize that is what was selected.  I hope I can get it exchanged for the photoshop elements 13 for macbook pro retina display.     Anyone know if this is an easy switch and one they will do?

When buying HD versions of shows, only the HD copy will automatically download now (probably due to requests from people who don't need/want the SD version and complained about it being forced on them). The SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes, though. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select TV shows. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the shows and be able to download them.
    Regards.

  • Why SLFM is not enabled for Macbook 13" Aluminum late 2008 model?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know why SLFM is not enabled for Macbook 13" Aluminum late 2008 model?
I just found this out after I installed bootcamp and Windows 7 on my Macbook 13" with P8600 2.4Ghz CPU 2GB RAM and 250G HDD after more than a year of using it.
After I installed the CPU monitoring widget on Windows 7 and CPUZ, I noticed that the lowest Freq that my Macbook operates even with <5% CPU load is only 1.5Ghz and VID @1.0V.
I installed Coolbook on OSX to confirm what I saw on Windows. I was surprised that SLFM is not visible in Coolbook which is the same result I got from Windows 7 CPU monitoring widget and CPUZ.
I checked with our local Mac support and they got the same results for all of Macbook 13" Aluminums late 2008 model. SLFM is not visible on Coolbook which means, it is not enabled.
I tried to install Coolbook on my wife's Macbook Pro 13" 2010, which has the same spec, P8600 2.4Ghz CPU and 250G HDD. The only difference is the memory which is 4GB RAM. There, SLFM is enabled and works just fine, running at 798Mhz @0.875V.
Can anyone please help confirm if this is really the case for Macbook 13" late 2008 model?
Because I checked the Intel P8600 Datasheet and SLFM should always be enabled. Otherwise, it will affect battery life as well as long term reliability of the CPU.
I would appreciate if the Macbook and Macbook Pro owners in this forum can help confirm using Coolbook the status of SLFM in your own Macbooks. You may use any other tool in checking the SLFM and share it with us if you believe it is more reliable and better than Coolbook. Thanks.

  • How can I know if my new internal hd for macbook pro is compatible?

I have been trying to upgrade my internal HD for macbook pro early 2008 2.4 and have been having a hard time getting it to boot.  Problems with both WD and Seagate.  I am wondering if the problem is with Mavericks.  I got a good back up from Time Machine to load on the hybrid drive.  Then when I try to restart it shows the apply symbol with no chime and then a black screen comes over the blue screen with some code (strange problem I have never seen) I can see that all the data is on the drive.  I was able to partitian in disk utility.  Anything ringing a bell.  I have done several switches like this and this is the first time I have had so much trouble.  I reinstalled my old drive just to make sure there was not another hardward issue and everything is fine there.  In fact I have a new logic board freshly installed by mac.

Your machine has a SATA 2 interface and I'm sure the new drives are SATA 3. They should still step down and work though. It's possible your SATA cable is marginal and the newer drive is trying to demand more out of it than the old one did. A good test would be to put the new drive in an external enclosure and see if it works ok from there. If so, it's probably the cable.
