NAS + itunes weirdness

Hi all
im dying here.......
I have a macbook pro running 10.5.6 and itunes 8.1.1. My library has about 5500 songs in it and lives on my NAS (a buffalo linkstation which i point my itunes music folder preference at). Every song plays fine. However at finder level i dont see my itunes library files (im looking on the NAS inside my itunes folder....not on my local machine).
Also, nothing appears in under 'devices' in itunes.
I can add/delete/play songs just fine, but no sign of the itunes library file. I really wanna back it up.
I connect to the NAS over smb (afp works too, but at finder level all i get is the NAS root, no subfolders!).
The search utility brings up nothing, even when I include hidden files. Maybe I should try terminal to hunt for the file? No idea how to use it though.......
Do any of you lovely people have any ideas?
Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

hey
your absolutely right! I'd seen that file but assumed it was just the default library file at the defaut location. iTunes always used to keep the library one level above your music folder location. Or at least I thought it did.........anyway thanks so much for waking me up! duh........
Any idea why the device doesnt show up in in tunes? I used to see it as 'djl Music' under devices. Now there is nothing.
Thanks again though!

  • Home sharing problem: How can I connect a NAS iTunes server to Apple TV 2?

I have a NAS (network attached storage) that has an iTunes server and I can see the music that I have on that NAS when I open my iTunes on my computers. However, I was wondering if there is a way to add that NAS/iTunes Server to my Home Sharing and not have to turn my computer ON every time.

    the short answer is no.
the itunes server on your NAS is a pseudo (fake) itunes instance.
you need a real instance of itunes (that has HomeSharing), and that means itunes running on a pc/laptop.
you can use your NAS as the storage location for itunes, but appletv cannot connect direct to the NAS.

  • Home sharing with nas itunes atv

    Hi
I have a nas that has all my movies tv shows on and an imac running itunes with the nas content in my library but the files staying on the nas.
Now I had problems at times with "error loading content try later" message, I assumed that this was due to using wifi and so have just run cat 5 to an extreme next to my atv pluged into same and the other end to my router and the imac and nas plugged into router as well, rebouted atv with new network settings and all good, next day error message again!!, now I know even the wifi is good enough as the nas is a Lacie and my ipad can link to the nas and beam to my atv, so with the cat 5 I should have no problems.
Help please I have no idea why this is happening

I've been trying to thing what might be different about my set up versus yours in case (which may be likely) you are correct and your wife's library is authorised and plays your content in her iTunes application.
I deliberately chose my wife's music to check my set up because she pays for her own iTunes account, whereas my children have their own accounts but I give them an allowance and send them gift vouchers from my account (which I thought might just be relevant). I later realised that my wife's library is also on our homesharing ID (which again might have been relevant), so I've now tried it with my youngests purchased and protected content because his library is using our homesharing ID.
    I'll keep thinking.

  • ITunes Media on NAS: iTunes makes a terrible mess... tips?

    Hi all
I have transferred my iTunes Media (folder) to a NAS (currently Synology DS212+), and I'm having repeated troubles in using those media from the iMac.
iTunes simply makes a mess in the iTunes library, and in the files as well. If I let iTunes organize the files, I suddenly and randomly find podcasts in music albums, and music files within podcasts, files are randomly missing, because iTunes moves them to slighly awkward locations, and so forth. From my experience, it seems as if there is some relative addressing of files involved, which leads to havoc if the respective file paths change.
I'm really lost and need help here.
What are the best settings I have to use when having iTunes Media on the NAS?
Where should the respective iTunes files sit? Experimenting around, I found that the iTunes library needs to be in the iTunes standard folder (putting it to the NAS seemed to be impossible). Podcasts on the NAS seem to work somehow if the folder sits within the iTunes Media folder; but for Apps, this doesn't work - they apparently need to be in the iTunes standard folder. (I observed also that if the NAS isn't available temporarily (disks sleeping and waking up), iTunes just makes a new iTunes Media folder and reverts its settings to standard folders... awkward)
Does anyone have an idea on where all the iTunes folders must be best for iTunes?
And then, I tried to use beaTunes for un-messing, and help make order in the library... random results to say the least).
So what is the best setup to use iTunes, when data are supposed to be stored on a NAS?
    Thanks!!!!!!! Help very much appreciated.
    Simon

Apple doesn't have a problem with iTunes, it works if you dont interfere. iTunes manages its own data. They are your media files, but don't you try to manage them.
Setup your NAS volume as the iTune media library. My iTunes library is on a USB external 2TB HD. Then set "keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
When you add new media file to iTunes you drag them to iTunes Library (top of left column.)
Never touch the iTunes files or folders on the NAS volume. Never move, rename, add or delete files or folders.

  • Yosemite can't connect to my NAS & other weirdness

    Hi
I'm running Yosemite 10.10 on an Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro i7 with 8GB of RAM.  The machine is connected to the network via Wi-Fi and my network is managed by a SKY router. All devices are configured to use DHCP to obtain their IP address from the router.
I have two NAS boxes on my network, a Western Digital MyCloud and a Buffalo Linkstation Pro.
Since upgrading to Yosemite I cannot access the Linkstation NAS box.
I can ping it on the network and I can call up the configuration pages in a web browser using the ip address, I can also access it from windows devices.
However if I try to connect to it using my mac it fails every time.
I use Go->Connect to Server then put in the details of the share, I'm prompted for a user name and password as expected but then the process stalls for several minutes before finally failing with the following error message.
'There was a problem connecting to the server "xxxxxxx"
Check the server name or IP address and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator.'
I've tried specifying smb, cifs, and even afp in the connection attempts but they all fail.
The Western Digital NAS works OK although it's a bit slow to make the initial connection.
The other weird thing is that my Macbook keeps changing it's NETBIOS name and I don't know why.  I named the machine ChristophersMBP but it keeps getting numbers appended to the end of it.  It's currently up to ChristophersMBP5.
The whole thing is very frustrating especially as if I boot Windows 7 using bootcamp it attaches to the share without any problems.
And help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like I've found, if not a fix, then at least a work around.
I was searching around the web and found other people having the same problem with their machine name changing.
The fault seemed to be caused by "Wake on LAN" being enabled on the machine.  I checked my machine and, sure enough it was enabled.
Quite why I'd want wake on LAN enabled on a laptop I'm not sure so I had no problem with disabling it.
I disabled wake on LAN, renamed my computer again and rebooted it.
Now I find I can successfully connect to my NAS box!
This is a guess but I wonder if the renaming was causing problems with DNS or reverse DNS lookups?

  • AppleTV and iTunes without Leaving Computer On All The Time/NAS iTunes Server

I begrudge having to leave my iMac on all the time just so now and again I can play music, pictures and video from it through AppleTV. My iMac is 2 floors up from the AppleTV, and as there is no wake on LAN working (I can't get it to work if there is (I have Lion)) I don't want to go up there to turn the Mac on when I want to use AppleTV.
So I have read some articles about iTunes servers on NAS drives and wondered if that would be a good solution, anyone try them?
If I did have my iTunes library on a NAS drive with an iTunes server, when I start iTunes on my iMac will it then load the iTunes Library as it does now like if it was a local library? So I can still manage it in the same way as I do on my Mac.
I assume then I could have another computer use the same library on the NAS? (although wont do it the same time due to conflicts)
I have iCloud/Match so not so bothered about music as I can play from the Cloud (although its hit ad miss sometimes), but I have videos and pictures I stream to AppleTV so they are more important. I don't want to have a computer left on all the time so I can use AppleTV.
If this is not possible, then I am thinking of getting a Macbook for the lounge, but then I don't want to have to plug/unplug my external hard drives into it all the time, which I am likely to swap with the main iMac too.
    Thanks a lot

P.S. I only play music from iCloud as my iMac is not on. So if I can stream to AppleTV without having a computer on, then I would do that to be faster, work all the time, and save bandwidth.

  • When playing Flac over NAS iTunes sees it has wav and play it?

    Hi,
I am using a NAS to play mp3, Flac. In iTunes I can select the flac file and play it. However it sees the file as a .wav. Before I play the song the
Samplefreq. = 192 kHz, but when I start playing the song the Samplefreq. = 44,1 kHz? File size remains the same. Anyone any idea what is happening here?

iTunes will reveal any changes made to tags by third party software. The usual culprit is Windows Media Player which sometimes goes off and "corrects" things you've already set your way in iTunes. Never worked out exactly what creates the string of numbers in the comments field.

  • View cover art wd book live nas iTunes

Hi, i have bought a WD Book Live 3tb network storage device, i have transferred all of my itunes library to the NAS drive and because it has a itunes server, itunes detects it and i can play my files. All of my music have the cover art embedded into the files, because when i view them in the finder i can see the cover art. But when i am browsing my library through itunes none of the cover art shows up even though it is embedded into the files? can anybody help me get my cover art to show? thanks

trial and error but i think i got it.. this worked for me running OS: 10.8.3, iTunes: 11.0.3
On your computer hard drive (running your OS) go to your music folder in finder and "IF" u have a folder called "iTunes" rename it to iTunes2 or whatever u what don't matter.
Create new iTunes by holding down opt key while opening iTunes. It will ask you to create or choose.  press "Create Library..."
U will need to name…. save as: "iTunes" and the saved location HAS TO BE ON MAIN HARD DRIVE running your OS. This folder cant be saved to external hard drive ONLY MAIN HARD DRIVE and the name HAS to be "iTunes". It wont work with any other name
If you have large music located on external drive then u will need to go to preferences on iTunes and change "iTunes Media folder location" to your desired location on your external and MAKE SURE TO CHECK BOTH BOXES... ( the actual "iTunes" folder containing Album Artwork, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library.xml ect has to be located on main hard drive running OS that the trick)
Adding media back to new iTunes--- so IF your original media is located on the main drive then go to the new "iTunes" folder that was created in your Music folder on main hard drive and there is a folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes"  all u do is just drag the folder holding all your original media to that folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes"and it will automatically move that original file and organize it to the new iTunes folder….So FYI  any media on the same disk will not get doubled when u add to folder it will only organize file but if it located on different disk and you drag file to " "iTunes Media folder location"" located on main hard drive then it will double that file
Adding media to new iTunes if the original media is located on EXTERNAL drive----. Pretty much its the same but back on step 4 if you saved  "iTunes Media folder location" to external folder... then that folder has a folder called "iTunes Media folder location"" …. So if u add any media saved on that drive and drag to that folder it will just organize and move that original file only……
So now in iTunes when u press "show in finder" for music it will show artwork and when u just search with finder it will show artwork for music file. Hope this help this issue bugged me for a long time apple tech was no help.. hope this works for others

  • NAS + iTunes and iPhoto

    Hi all,
    Following issue:
I had a NAS, on which I had music and photos. I connected to this NAS using the AFP protocol.
in iTunes I simply references the music on my NAS.
in iPhoto I imported the photos from my NAS but told iPhoto to leave them where they are (so I guess this is also referencing).
    Problem:
    My NAS died.
I had backups so I moved all my music and photos to a new NAS which also supports AFP.
    But now this issue:
iPhoto crashes when I try to view photos because it cannot locate the photos.
    iTunes cannot locate my music.
    My main issue is:
If I re-reference my music and photos, will iTunes and iPhoto keep all the, how should I call it, attributes?
For example will iPhoto keep all the faces info, albums, events, image rotations and edits?
Will iTunes keep my playlists: most played, top rated, etc...?
Is there any way to keep these attributes or am I starting from a clean slate?
    Thanks

all itunes playlist, top rated etc data is contained in the itunes library folder. all iphoto faces data is kept inside the iphoto library package. I'm not sure what you mean by rereferencing but you need to reuse the iphoto and itunes libraries else that data will be lost. I think you should be ok with the iphoto though. as I understand it you didn't move the actual iphoto library from the pictures folder. is this right?

  • Storage solution - NAS, iTunes, USB, remote access

    Hi,
I am looking to purchase a new Storage Device. I have a small network at home consisting of, in addition to my computer, my girlfriend's computer and a couple of friends who regularly come over. I have a cable modem, Vonage (which I am about to get rid of - never use it), and an Airport Express. My access to the network is strictly through the AE, hard wired is not an option in my house due to setup.
I have a MacBook with a 160GB Western Digital USB drive directly attached. The WD houses my iTunes, but it's full. I stream music to my home stereo from iTunes through the AE. I also have about 30GB of photos on my Macbook's HD. I have no backup strategy in place so if the WD dies, I'm screwed. Here is what I want in a solution:
    1) Redundancy - preferably RAID 1 or 5
    2) Fast enough to steam HD content wirelessly (I will probably be adding an Apple TV this summer)
    3) Ability to move around my house and still stream music. Currently I have to be plugged into the WD (which has an AC Adapter) so I am relegated to the desk.
    4) Remote Access of files. I am sick of lugging around the external hard drive. Wondering if this would be fast enought to listen to music while outside of my internal network?
    5) **Probably not possible** Ability to play music directly from the Storage Device, potentially with AppleTV or some other device, so that I don't have to have my MacBook powered on.
I am leaning towards a NAS but I have been reading some info about using Airport Extreme USB hard drive sharing function. I also thought that AppleTV might release an update that allows users to access and play their digital content without going through the PC.
I looked at the following devices:
    1) Maxtor Shared Storage II 1TB - uPnP AV adapter looks like it will play files diretly from this withou PC - wondering if the Airport Extreme is a uPnP AV device?
    2) Iomega 150d
    3) Buffalo Terastation Live (looks like it has limited Mac support)
I'm looking for recommendations on a solution, NAS, USB or otherwise that addressed the above concerns. I don't want to spend over $1,000.
    Thanks
    Conor

I also have a very similar concern.
I am about to purchase a hard drive enclosure with ethernet capability. If you go to ebay and search for "3.5 ethernet" you will find many "USB 2.0 LAN Ethernet Enclosure" for $30-40. Then I will buy a 3.5 IDE hard drive of 500GB for about $100.
My idea is to attach this setting to my Netgear wireless router and access photos, music and videos from my laptop and desktop.

  • ICal and iTunes Weirdeness

I just downloaded the newest updates from apple (the May 1st ones) and restarted my computer. When I turned it back on things were different. The Dock didn't have icons I had put on it, iMovie had a question mark rather than an icon and the sizes were weird. When I opened up iTunes all my music was gone, fortunately it was still on the computer and just had to be put back into the iTunes folder for some reason. Finally, all my iCal calenders are gone! All the other stuff is easily fixable, but I need my calenders back, and don't remember whats on them! Does anybody have any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?

I'm not sure whether getting no replies to this (or the earlier) query is something of which to be proud - or terrified!
Am I the only person in the world with this bizarre insoluble problem?  if so, why me?  Am I a Chosen One or, more likely, someone to be punished for a lifetime of misdeeds!
But there is progress.  I have no idea what happened at a technical level or why, but the matter has now resolved itself and things are syncing normally.  Until the next time!
Perhaps there is a clue somewhere in the following ...
I run my iMac 24/7 and thus I rarely close iCal on the iMac and when i do it is usually by accident.  The same applies to Calendars on the iPad, although I do reboot from time to time.
Anyway, I installed some software on the iMac which required a reboot and, as susual, iCal opened via Preferences > Accounts > Startup items - only this time I was presented with a perfectly blank calendar.  A message appeared, from within iCal (oh, how I wish i had noticed what it actually said) saying something along the lines of "importing calendars".  This took a little while and it wasn't instant - maybe it does this every time it reatrts but too fast for me to notice.
After this "import", if indeed that's what it was, the syncing was corrected!
Coincidence?  Cause and effect?  Magic?  Too many magic mushrooms for breakfast?
If that is what resolved the issue, then how can I cause an import deliberately for when the syncing goes astray again and just what does an "import" do that a normal launch doesn't and which might have resolved the glitch?
I have had this "import" message before, but very very rarely, so it may well have resolved the syncing issue last time and I just didn't make the possible connection.
Does that help anyone come to my rexcue with an explanation and, possibly, a strategy for preventing or deliberatly correcting syncing issues in the future?

  • IPod seen by windows, not by iTunes+ weird error message

I have a first generation 2GB iPod nano and i use windows xp. I can't load any music because iTunes doesn't see my iPod and an error message pops up that reads like this: "iTunes: iTunes.exe corrupt file. The file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes is corrupt and unredable. Please run the checkdisk utility." I've tried everything, reinstalling iTunes, different versions, reinstalling OS, resetting iPod, even on another computer, same problem. Other than that, the iPod works normally, it's just lacking music..
and why is there no email adress from apple for service qustions? 10x

I still don't get it, how can I put it in disk mode if I CANNOT see the iPod in iTunes..?
Did you read the document i linked you to? here's another link to it:
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
whereabouts in that procedure in that document (that you get to by clicking that link) does it say that you have to connect it to iTunes to put it into disk mode?
    ... never mind ... i guess you've fixed it anyway ...

  • Problems with iTunes - weird characters

    Hey.
I had some problems with malware/spyware/etc, so I reinstalled Windows(XP) and of course: I must now install all the programs again.
The installation of iTunes- and iPod-software (used the CD that came with my iPod Nano) worked great, but when I opened iTunes, I almost got a shock!
Instead of for example "File" and etc on the top and "Library" and etc at the left, it is only squares! It seems that all the characters, except all the song-, artist-, album- and etc-names in the center, have been replaced with squares! I think iTunes works, but it is impossible to navigate when I only see squares.
I really hope someone can help me. Thank you!

Unfortuantely when it comes to fonts and such, I am more of a Mac guy in that regard and have never had to deal with font issues on any of the Windows machines I have use or currently use. Perhaps a Windows guru will come around soon and assist?
I know that when I put in characters that my Mac displays properly and then take that to a PC I often get squares, like the ones below in my system info. On my Mac those show up as little Apple logos. On my work PC they are just squares. Which is why I suspect a font issue.

  • ATV2 don't support NAS iTunes library

I'm using iOmega Home Network Cloud Edition.
    This network HD supports following feature;
Built in Audio Video Media Server: UPnP™ DLNA Certified®: Provides the ability to stream photos, audio content and videos to a variety of media devices, such as game consoles (Microsoft Xbox® 360, Sony PlayStation® 3), audio bridges, iTunes™ players, picture frames, Iomega ScreenPlay products and more.
Create shared iTunes™ libraries to provide a central location for your music.
But I don't see this library Directly from the Network HD(NHD), even though it supports iTunes library
I have to connect this NHD to iTunes in my PC and turn on the home sharing in both PC and ATV2 to watch videos in NHD.
I bought NHD that supports iTunes library to play through ATV2 without turning my PC on.
    This is waste of electricity.
    Go Green Apple~!!
    Save the Earth~!!
Tell iOmega how to put apple homesharing on thier NHD or Enable to find shared iTunes libraries in the network.

If the device claimed to be an Itunes server or work with the Apple TV or any iOS device for that matter, then you have clear grounds to ask for a full refund. If not then you could still ask for your money back but perhaps make a mental note to read the label first.
