NAS on Airport Express

Hi all
I am trying to attach a MyXerve MX3600 NAS to my wireless network with no success. I am using an ethernet 4 port hub to attach the drive, airport express to the modem as the Airport express only has 1 ethernet port. My question is am i trying to achieve too much from the airport express? From my limited knowledge, it appears that the drive is not getting an internet connection.
Any help much appreciated.
Steve

Your network should look like this:
Modem > AirPort Express > Wireless Clients
In other words, the AirPort Express must connect directly to the modem. You won't be able to use the ethernet switch in this configuration since it must be positioned after the router, not before it.
If the NAS connects via ethernet, you will need to purchase a wireless router with 3-4 ethernet LAN ports, like an AirPort Extreme or similar product.
Can your NAS attach to a network using wireless only? If so, you could configure it to join the network created by your AirPort Express.

  • Port forwarding for LaCie NAS on AirPort Express

    Hello,
I have just purchased both an AirPort Express and Airport Extreme to which I would like to connect a LaCie 5big NAS Pro. The NAS is physically connected to the AirPort Express, which is acting as a bridge to the AirPort Extreme. The issue is that all the ports which the NAS uses for various sharing services (SFTP, HTTPS, MyNAS, etc) are unavailable. How would I go upon opening these ports on the AirPort network, or go upon forwarding new ports to the local ones?
    Thank you in advance!

Just to make sure I understand the situation..
You have a new AC model extreme?? Running 7.7.1?
Are these the correct things to be doing? I've included screenshots of both the NAS port errors as well as an example of a port entry in the AirPort utility.
    Your port forwarding looks fine..
This is pedantic but can you change the variable name.. eg.
    Harrison HTTPS
I know will fail in most routers.. the space being illegal.. I know apple have this strange naming convention.. but it just gives me the heabie jeabies when I see it. You can call it HHTTPS for example .. anything but no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
BTW you never need block out a private IP address.. it is not routable.. I can tell you my computer is here.

When hovering over the red buttons, it reads "Port # is already in use on your router, or your router is not compatible with the UPnP-IGD/NAT-PMP protocol"
Your last few lines are the most distressing..
Lacie being a more Mac orientated product has included NAT-PMP protocol in the NAS to open the required ports.. automatically in an apple router..  that means it should be able to work without intervention.
Ports cannot be opened if they are already allocated. which is what the error message means.. already in use.. they are in use because you allocated them..
I suggest you reset to factory the AE.. start up a single computer.. leave everything else off.. Do a basic setup of the AE just to get you network and internet access.. Then power up the NAS .. and see if it can open those ports automagically.. If not then the AE is simply not going to work at this firmware level.
BTW.. there is no doubt the 6.3.1 utility on Mac is problematic.. Apparently the iOS one is much better.. or even 5.6.1 utility on a windows PC. If you have an iphone/ipad use the airport utility app and do the setup from there.. rather than a mac.. it has more chances of working.. maybe.
You have an express.. this sounds odd but please change the firmware in the express back to 7.6.1 (I don't use express so I know less about them). Set it up as router in place of the extreme.. and try the NAS again.. you might need to buy a switch to do all this. But it should work if you do it via the iOS device.. well worth a try too and see if the earlier firmware can auto allocate ports via the NAT-PMP or even if that fails by manually allocating them.
Or the other choice is a non apple router for now.. and put the Extreme in bridge .. ie take away all NAT responsibility from it .. use your non-apple router firstly try by upnp and then manually forward the ports if you have to..
    Hope something in there helps.

  • Best way to set up homesharing via airport express and NAS

    Hi,
I've just bought an Airport express and was wondering what the best way to set it up would be so that I can play music stored on my NAS, controlled by my iphone / ipad.  I have itunes match as well, and don't want my phone to be streaming the music from wherever.  The airport express will be wired via ethernet to the same router as the NAS on which everything is stored.  I don't want the problem with network dropouts and hammering the bandwidth and battery on my iphone to deal with.
How can I set it up to be taking the music straight from the NAS rather than streaming it.  I'd also rather not have to turn off itunes match everytime, because it takes an age to repopulate the library when I turn it back on.
    Thanks,
    Dom

You cannot use homesharing to play content from anywhere but iTunes on a computer. The content doesn't have to be on that computer but it has to be part of the iTunes library on your computer. In addition the computer has to be on with iTunes running.
It doesn't matter what sonos can do, sonos is a lame duck in comparison to iTunes because iTunes gives you many features sonos can't, all because it doesn't use iTunes and homesharing.

  • Second Airport Express and NAS

    Hi!
I have an Airport Express connected to the internet and I´d like to buy a second Airport Express to connect to my NAS. I didn´t find a precise information about it. I asked the "genius" and he told me to buy an timecapsule, but doesn´t make sense to me. Anyone had the same problem? Thank you!

    Hi,
Sorry, but you have already a NAS and you want to connect it or you need one?
When the NAS is near to the Airport, you can buy a Network Switch and so you can connect more Devices..
    Regards,

  • Can I use Airport Express with a USB Hard disk as a NAS solution?

What have people tried for NAS solutions that work really well wirelessly? Can I use my Airport Express with its USB port to attach a hard disk? Or do I need an Airport Extreme base station? Or some other solution?

The price of the Time Capsule includes the NAS backup system plus a hardware router for your network.
Macs do not support USB 3.0 and most likely won't because Apple's weight is behind Thunderbolt which is considerably faster and more versatile than USB.

  • Airport express 4th generation connecting nas

I'm looking to buy a airport express and wd my book live to stream all my media to different devices. I currently have a extreme and will be using the express to extend my network, as I have a black spot in my office. I would like to know will it be possible to plug the nas to the express' Ethernet port?
    Thanks.

I would like to know will it be possible to plug the nas to the express' Ethernet port?
Yes. When the Express is configured to "Extend a wireless network", the Ethernet port on the device is enabled.
Keep in mind that you will not attain normal Ethernet communication speeds since the speed of the Ethernet port will be limited by the quality of the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
In other words, the NAS will likely operate much slower connected to the Express that it would if it was connected directly to an Ethernet port on the AirPort Extreme.

  • IPad + Airport Express + NAS

Hi. I've been using an iPad to connect to an Airport Express which is then connected by analog ouput to a hi-fi system. This works great but is using the music content on the iPad...which is limited. Is there a way to set this up so it can serve content from a NAS or other separate storage device? So I want to be able to choose music from the ipad and have it play on my hi-fi but the music actually resides on a separate storage device. I hope I've expained that sufficiently. Thanks.

Ok, but your question was: "Is it possible to access my nas with my ipad when my pc is off?", and that is what I responded to. If you are concerned about it not creating playlists, then you may want to contact Stratospherix Ltd to see if they can address that for you.

  • Enough bandwith to usa a NAS server for itune & stream via Airport Express?

    Hi,
i posted this question in the itunes forum, but got zero feedback. i was hoping someone here could possibly answer my question :
I was thinking of getting a ByteCC LANDisk NAS to use as an itunes music 'jukebox' server for 2 macs (a G5 and a macbook). I have a Airport Express that i'd like to use to stream music to my living room stereo via itunes,
My question is is there enough bandwith to stream from the NAS server to the macs, and then to also stream the audio to the living room stereo via the airport express at the same time?
I'm sure someone must've atempted this set up
Any help or info is apreciated!

This works. I have a WD Netcenter (320G) which I store my main iTunes library on (holding down the command key when starting iTunes allows you to chose which library you want to use). I'm not using an Airport base (D-Link and now a Zyxel) and I can stream music AND video no problem - all my movies are on there too and they play fine through Front Row.
Oh and I usually mount it as nfs rather then smb - handy little apple script for this which I run as an app (when are Apple going to bring out a proper location manager that automounts networked drives etc based on where you are?!!!).
    Have fun.

  • HiFi + Airport express + NAS + Remote App = possible?

Hi, I would like to be able to play my mp3s without my pc switched on. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to control music with the Remote app on my iphone streamed to an airport express from a NAS which has an itunes server function? I thought a time capsule would be perfect for this task but seems it does not do this.
Any help would be much appriecated
    Thanks, Jay.

It looks like the only way to control music with the Remote app and PC turned off is through an Apple TV.
I hope I can be proved wrong....

  • NAS setup question using Airport Express

I currently have a non-apple wifi router in the living room in which my modem is plugged in to. I have an airport express in my bedroom as an "extender".
I am interested in buying a NAS (specficially the WD My Book World Edition).
If I plug in the hard drive in to the Airport Express using an ethernet cable, will the drive appear as a NAS on my macbook? Please let me know if I need any special settings on my Airport Express.
I realize I can't use Airport Disk utility via the USB drive which is only supported on the Extreme, but will this work? Thanks in advance

    Thanks for the reply.
I have a linksys cable modem/router, which is one unit the that the cable company provided.
I do beleive that it is configured to "join a wireless network". Although I dont know what WDS is and I doubt my linksys supports it.
Is there any way to attach my NAS drive to my airport express, The ethernet port cant "re-broadcast" the internet connection though it without this WDS configuration?

  • Itunes + NAS + Airport Express

I've noticed persistant malfunction with my configuration, and I don't think it's that weird : I'm juste trying to use the components for what they're supposed to do...
    - Itunes Library is on my MacBookPro
    - 60Go of music is on a NAS (LaCie, previsously on TimeCapsule, but symptoms are the same)
    - AirPort Express 802.11n is on the network
    - wifi Routeur is my ASDL box and fixed IP had been reserved for each components (I tryed DCHP but was worst)
    Symptom is :
if the ethernet cable is not plugged in my MB, the music stream can't reach the AirportExpress properly : it's "hacked" and can't go fluid.
Symptom was exactly the same when I used the TimeCapsule as wifi routeur.
If I play the music on local speakers, I have no problems at all, with or without the ethernet cable !
NB : if I play a music that stands on the internal hard drive, symptom is the same

Ok, but your question was: "Is it possible to access my nas with my ipad when my pc is off?", and that is what I responded to. If you are concerned about it not creating playlists, then you may want to contact Stratospherix Ltd to see if they can address that for you.

  • Maxtor NAS drive used on Airport Express at Timemachine Volume

Does anybody know if it is possible to use an airport express with a NAS drive and use it as a volume for timemachine. Currently I have the drive attached to my timecapsule as a NAS drive. I would like to hide away the airport express with the maxtor attached for security reasons.

Thanks for the post. I was trying to connect a ethernet drive (Maxtor 1TB NAS mass storage drive) that I have now got working wirelessly. This drive is formatted with a linux file system that you are unable to reformat so it is not possible to use as a timemachine volume, however it is great for saving back ups of movies etc and using over the net as I have now set it to do.

  • Maxtor Shared Storage (NAS) + Airport Express problems

Dear forum readers and network pundits,
I have just recently bought a 500Gb Maxtor Shared Storage (MSS) ethernet drive, to which I'm planning to make regular backup of files from my wirelessly connected MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. Both computers are connected to the Internet via Airport Express, which, in turn, is connected to a router/modem. The MSS is attached to an RJ45 socket on the modem, next to the Airport Express RJ45 cable.
The problem is that I cannot seem to make a proper connection to the MSS. I can access the drive's web interface through Safari, but I cannot mount it as a network drive in the Finder. When hooking up my MacBook Pro to the router/modem directly using a RJ45 cable everything works like a charm, so I know the drive works fine. The problem seems to be the transition from the wired router to Airport Express.
I'm no network wizard in any way. When things don't work from the start I'm left scratching my beard, which is why I turn to the vast bank of knowledge contained here. Please help me. Is there a button in the Airport Express settings I can push to make it work, or do I need to by more hardware?
    Looking forward to your help.
    Cheers,
    Andreas
P.S. I'll churn out brownie points by the bucketload for any helpful answers

This seems to me related to this problem

I think it's the mixture of wired and wireless in combination with certain routers.

  • Need help with Apple TV + Airport Express setup

I am newbie to this whole Apple thing. Just switched from Windows world (20+ years of torture) to MacBook Pro about 6 months ago. Loving every minute of it.
    Here's what I currently have...
I have a 4000+ sq.ft. home with 3 levels on a 1-acre lot. I have 5 zones for music/movies - 7.1 dedicated Home Theater (lower level), 5.1 HT system for casual TV watching in Family Room, 2.1 system (music only) in my Home Office, 2.1 system (music only) in my Master Bedroom, 5.1 HTiB in Kids Bedroom. All systems have dedicated AVRs/Speakers/Subs (Denon, Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, Polk, Energy, Klipsch etc.).
I have 2 MacBook Pros and 2 Windows Laptops. I have AirportExtreme running a wireless network throughout the house. I have NAS attached to AE. I use iTunes to manage all my media content. I also have a iPhone 3G.
I have ripped all my CDs in Apple Lossless format into iTunes. I listen to free internet radio stations (NO Napster, Raphsody or other subscription-based services). Sometimes watch/listen free video/audio podcasts. I do NOT rent or buy movies/music via iTunes or any other source (just buy old-fashioned CDs/DVDs when neeeded).
Here's what I want to accomplish...
    1. Ability to "wirelessly" stream media to any or all zones.
    2. Central, easy to use controller for all systems.
    3. Should be able to accomplish this functionality without having to keep PC/Mac running.
Ques 1: I have considered Sonos option, but it can't do video content. So, I guess my options are Apple TV + 5 Airport Expresses. Is that correct? Will I be able to accomplish my goal with this setup? Anything I need to be aware of, e.g, network connectivity/slowdown issues, system reliability issues, ease-of-use etc.?
Ques 2: One of the major benefits of Sonos system is the ability to play different music in different zones. From what I understand, this is NOT possible with AppleTV + AirportExpress + iTunes setup. Is that correct?
What if I have iTunes running on 2 separate laptops. Can one laptop play it's own playlist via AirExp-1 and the other laptop play a different playlist via AirExp-2 & AirExp-3? Is this possible? If yes, then I guess this may "simulate" the zoning effect of Sonos (albeit thru 2 separate controllers; but it works for my needs).
Ques 3: I have a MobileMe account to keep my MBP and iPhone in sync. I have lot of Photo Albums in MobileMe Gallery and also in iPhoto on my MBP. How can this me viewed via AppleTV? Would I have to move my iPhoto from MBP to AppleTV HDD?
Ques 4: Currently my iTunes library resides on my MBP. Is there any benefit of putting it on AppleTV HDD?
Ques 5: Can AppleTV HDD be used as backup drive for Time Machine. Currently, I have no choice but to buy Apple Time Capsule to use as wireless backup drive for my MBP; I can't use my NAS for this purpose (From what I've read on forums, I think Apple removed this functionality).
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

    >and Verizon Fios w/ 50mg upload and 25 mg download.
Your internet connection is not relevant this is all runnig across your home network.
    >- I want to be able to backup all of my photos, movies and music
Time Machine on MacOS will will already take care of this for you.
    >- I want to store all of my movies on a separate devise that wont clog up my mac book pro
So put then do that.  You said you have two external drives. (As long as they both have network support)  Put the content on one of them and make the other one the back up.
    > (ideally I would like a wireless connection)
While technically possible not a great idea.  Streaming video over WiFi is usally problemattic and so are large scale data set backups.
    >- I want to be able to watch those stored movies through ATV (via itunes)
Only going to work when your Mac is on with iTunes running, but can be done.
