NAS Problems! Maxtor Shared Storage II not accepting long file names

Somebody help me!!!! Maxtor Shared Storage II. can't accept beyond certain filename length. And Maxtor says its Mac compatible. What a bull! Now, is there a way for me to do it via ethernet? Or do I have to use a usb cable with matching ends? And once I've reformat it, will everything works just as fine as well? I mean all the capability of the RAID and network?
Cheers!

Thanks for the technical jargon thingy – the hatter – I've been spending the couple of my sleepless hours finding out about the problem that I have came across that FAT32 thingy numerous times.
Next month I'll be turning 32. Lucky for me, I'm not FAT and make sure I won't otherwise I start becoming 'Mac-unfriendly' even though I'm definitely am very compatible.

  • Maxtor Shared Storage (NAS) + Airport Express problems

    Dear forum readers and network pundits,
    I have just recently bought a 500Gb Maxtor Shared Storage (MSS) ethernet drive, to which I'm planning to make regular backup of files from my wirelessly connected MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. Both computers are connected to the Internet via Airport Express, which, in turn, is connected to a router/modem. The MSS is attached to an RJ45 socket on the modem, next to the Airport Express RJ45 cable.
    The problem is that I cannot seem to make a proper connection to the MSS. I can access the drive's web interface through Safari, but I cannot mount it as a network drive in the Finder. When hooking up my MacBook Pro to the router/modem directly using a RJ45 cable everything works like a charm, so I know the drive works fine. The problem seems to be the transition from the wired router to Airport Express.
    I'm no network wizard in any way. When things don't work from the start I'm left scratching my beard, which is why I turn to the vast bank of knowledge contained here. Please help me. Is there a button in the Airport Express settings I can push to make it work, or do I need to by more hardware?
    Looking forward to your help.
    Cheers,
    Andreas
    P.S. I'll churn out brownie points by the bucketload for any helpful answers

  • File Copied to Maxtor Shared Storage NAS Drive Disappearing?

    I attached a new Maxtor Shared Storage II (500 Gb) drive to our wireless router, and have discovered problem with disappearing files when trying to copy a local file to a folder in the NAS drive.
    Open a window to an empty folder on the NAS drive. Drag a file on the desktop of the local machine to the folder. File appears to be successfully copied.
    However, looking at the info bar of the target window immediately after the copying operation shows that the folder contains TWO files (even though only one is shown in the window). After a few seconds, the file disappears and the window shows 0 files. There is no error message.
    The desktop file I'm trying to copy has an image icon (as with many files in Leopard). However, the file in the NAS folder window always shows a generic Preview icon during its brief existence.
    This happens about 75% of the time.
    Occasionally, the window does show two files after copying, and both files will disappear. When this happens, one of the files has a generic Preview icon, and the other has an Acrobat icon.
    Other times, the drag and drop produces no files on the target window and no error message.
    The file that shows the problems is this file: http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Promotionsfiles/businesslinkgovukrun.pdf
    I'm running Leopard 10.5.1, everything up to date. Can anyone shed light on this problem?
    What seems to me to be happening is that when Leopard copies a file with an image icon, it copies the icon separately from the file. After the copy, it ties them up together. If something is not quite right, it can't "bundle" the icon with the file, and the copy operation falls down.

  • Suggestions on how to connect iMac *directly* to Maxtor Shared Storage?

    i know that using Time Machine to back up to my Maxtor Shared Storage over my network isn't an option right now... So in the meantime, I would like to just connect my Maxtor drive directly to my iMac -- but I can't figure out how.
    There is no way to connect it via USB, and there is no firewire port. The Apple guy at Best Buy said to use the ethernet cable to connect the external hard drive to my iMac, but I can't get my iMac to recognize the drive that way.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Right now my Maxtor drive is connected via a router no problem... But In order to use Time Machine, the drive needs to be directly (via cable,etc) connected to my iMac...
    There is no firewire port on my Maxtor drive.
    I did go to Best Buy (and Office Max, and Office Depot) to buy a USB cable... The cable I need doesn't exist... For example they are like this:
    http://www.coolgear.com/images/as340823as.jpg
    But BOTH my iMac and Maxtor drive have ports that take the USB cable-end shown on the left in the image above. There is no cable that is the same on both ends...
    So, how do I get my computer to recognize/mount my Maxtor drive when I connect it directly to the iMac via ethernet cable (that is what the Apple guy at Best Buy told me to do)? I can't find anything at all in the Maxtor documentation about this...
    Thanks for reading...

  • Backing up to Maxtor Shared Storage II

    trying to backup files from mb pro to maxtor shared storage II.  noticed not all .jpg's copied over and no other information (e.g., .doc's, etc.). any help appreciated including if easy way to ensure all documents (.jpg's, .doc, etc.) copied over.

    The best way is with http://www.bombich.com/ 's Carbon Copy Cloner using simple cloning after formatting the hard drive with GUID partitioning.  If you must connect to a PC, consider networking via the PC, or using Macdrive software to read it.

  • I'm having problems uploading video taken with my iPhone 4 to Photobucket.  FB will not accept the file extension which is ex. IMG_423.  They will play on my computer and will upload to Facebook.  Why is the phone taking video with this file instead of so

    I'm having problems uploading video taken with my iPhone 4 to Photobucket.  FB will not accept the file extension which is ex. IMG_423.  They will play on my computer and will upload to Facebook.  Why is the phone taking video with this file instead of something like .mov or mp4.  How can I change the extension after the fact and avoid it in the future?

    You said, "the 4 also has signal and wifi whereas the 5 has only wifi". By "signal", I'm assuing that you mean cellular signal. If so, that means your iPhone 4 is still active on your cellular number and your iPhone 5 is not. Contact your carrier to sort out which phone is active on your account.

  • ITunes, with Maxtor Shared Storage.

    Hi Guys,
    I've set my iTunes Music Folder location to that of my Maxtor Shared Storage drive (where all my music is) but none of my music is displayed in iTunes? What am I missing here? I have a music folder plus lots of sub folders, I've tried doing a reset but no luck.
    Need some help

    Perhaps you should ask this in the iTunes discussion area or the Tiger (10.4) networking discussion area.

  • Bluetooth not accepting incoming files

    recently my bluetooth will not accept incoming files from my lg viewty and says connection is not possible but it will work with my friends macbook, it allows files to be sent from my macbook to my viewty though.
    any ideas whats wrong?

    I'm having the same problem. Bluetooth says that everything is fine when I look at the advanced settings except that my phone is not connected. I am able to send files to my phone, but not vice versa. I can browse the folders on my phone, but they are all empty. I have tried shutting both off and restarting and resetting the device connection. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    I also think I should mention the fact that the phone did in fact used to work with my macbook before the Leopard update, so I'm almost positive it isn't the phone.

  • My smart TV do not accept ":" in Skype name!

    My smart TV do not accept ":" in Skype name! I am very disappointed because now skype name contains a prefix "live:", now I can not use Skype on my Grundig smart TV.

    live:xxxxx is a generic name that is automatically created when you create Skype account using Microsoft account option. However, this Skype name cannot be used as login ID. You login ID is the email address which you have used to create Microsoft Skype account. Unfortunately, you can't login to Skype on TV using Microsoft account.

    The only option you have now is to create a true Skype Name account using this signup form and login with this Skype name on your TV.

    Please let me know,for me it looks like the strctures are same..Why is it not accepting..

    Hi,
    it seems you have created data and message type for the structure, thats why it is having NS0 tags and XML name space,
    even encoding also different.
    you have to handle this,best way is convert your test data in to XSD using any XML tool,and import it..it will work.
    or
    remove XML Name space in message type and try it,i think it will work.

  • Windows sharing long file names

    Just after a bit of advice with regards long file names with OSX/Win.
    I have a user that uses a mixture of SL and ML connection a shares on a Win 2008 R2 server.  They had some issues a while back with long file names ( I think folder depth more than anything) and a previous engineer installed ExtremeZ-IP.  However ever since they've been having random file permission issues.
    I'm keen to remove the ExtremeZ software as I see it as an extra piece of management and failure and with the news of Apple dropping AFP, makes sense to lose it when possible.  I do have other users using OSX and Win 2008 servers with no 3rd party software and not having any issues.
    I'm thinking that the original problem was with using AFP not liking the Win file names and instead of moving to SMB, the software 'fix' was used. I feel that removing this software and forcing the clients to use SMB, will hopefully resolve the permission issues and have no implications on file names.
    I would be grateful if someone could shed some light or thoughts on this if anybody has similar experience.

    I suspect they are connecting to the server using Samba and you're using afp ?

  • File upload script not getting the file name for larger files

    Hi
    I have the following code (see extract below) and find that
    when the size of the file to upload is larger than about 300kb the

  • C#: 'Not a Valid File Name' error when I know the name and link are correct.

    I'm receiving "Not a valid file name" when I know I have used this link before and the filename is spelled correctly. I'm not sure if I should be looking at something else. This is my connection code.  It fails on "conn.Open()".
    For security reasons, I edited the link... it is not a working link for this question.
    private void InitializeDBConnection()
    strConn = @"Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=http://database.storage.net/App_Data/Tracking.mdb";
    MessageBox.Show(strConn);
    MyConn = new OleDbConnection(strConn);
    MyConn.Open();

    A database must be locally available via the filesystem, e.g. an UNC path would do it also.
