NAS recommendation(s)?

I'm in the market for a NAS storage device. I've done some research and have found the following talked about on the web:
- Buffalo Linkstation
- Maxtor Shared Storage
- Western Digital NetCenter
- Western Digital My Book World Edition
I am looking to connect this storage device via ethernet to a router for home back-up purposes across several macs & 1 pc.
Any recommendations? I've read on these boards that I should stay away from LaCie...
Thanks in advance,
RedFox

Hi,
I also have been thinking about this route for a while now, but havnt taken the plunge yet. Redfox you mentioned your purpose to be used in an internal network right?
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for using this types of drives over the internet? I want to be able to access my home files at work w/out getting involved with port forwarding, static IPs etc. Does anyone know if this it is possible to access these NAS drives over the internet?
Note: During my research 1-2mths i found out the the WD MyBook World Edition is not available on Mac to setup, you will need a PC for the setup process. In your case u have a PC so should be fine.
Note 2: I heard lacie HDD can failed/corrupt for a few of my friends. The best drives are seagate. Hope that helps u.

  • NAS recommendation?

I've looked around and have not seen any threads sharing positive experiences with an NAS and Time Machine. I'm totally turned off of Apple's Time Capsule (my topic from a few months back: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11522403 ) and I seek a third-party solution.
I'll be backing up two (three, soon) macbooks via wifi to the device.
    Any thoughts?

I've had a Drobo FS for a couple of months now and have been using it with Time Machine since I got it. Other than taking a while for the initial backup I haven't had any issues. Please note that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to third party NAS products and the ability to backup to them could break at anytime.

  • Want to hook up a hard drive to my router

I want to have nothing stored locally on my 3 machines, just access everything from my 3 computers and my 360 on the hard drive connected to the router. I have a netgear rangemax. Do I to get  special hard drive and a different router? Please advise.

So if I get a NAS, then I can use my existing router, right? I don't have to have a special router for it to connect? Any pro's or con's either way? Care to recommend a NAS?
Correct.  A NAS just plugs into one of the spare wired ports on your router.  If you don't have spare wired ports, you can purchase an Ethernet switch and plug it into one of the wired ports.
Note that until recently, many routers only had 100 megabit wired ports.  If this is the case, you might want to get a gigabit switch, plug it into one of the router's wired ports, and plug everything else into it.
I'll leave NAS recommendations to someone else - my NAS solution is a fullblown file server.  (e.g. tower PC with five hard drives running Ubuntu Server - it also has a TV tuner card in it, since it also serves as my DVR.)

  • NAS drive recommendations for use with MPB, PS3, APX and time machine?

    Hello,
I am looking to get a 1TB NAS drive and then partition about 400mb for time machine and the other 600mb will basically serve as a media/itunes server.
Wondering what recommendations you have and anything to look for in the product details? Is bittorrent an important feature? usually I just use the client on my computer and save to an external drive but maybe thats inefficient.
I don't need raid, try to keep the cost down
    thanks

Hi Rhett, if you post this in the 'Time Machine' category, you might get faster response and plenty suggestions.

  • I need a recommendation for SAN (Actually NAS) ethernet switches.

Hi, we have one Dell blade chassis with 8 servers ----  connected to stacked switches (3750) with EtherChannels ----  to NetApp (Controller 1 and 2 accordingly). Unfortunately, Dell blade servers only supports 1Gbps for port and NetApp also supports 1Gbps for each port (ports are all ethernet, not FC)
    Questions
    1) What kind of switch do you recommend? I know that it is not popular to use ethernet in SAN  I just recognized that we have NAS, what do you recommend switches for NAS?
not SAN, so any MDS 9000 series don't work because it supports limited ethernet ports (many FC ports). I need many ethernet ports at least 48 ports from each switch. I know Nexus is one of candidates, but want to double check.
    2) Most of vendors ask what kind of connection I have. I said usually just ethernet, not FC, not FCoE. Is it right?    I believe that since I found NAS, it is "Ethernet"
    3) The reason that I am looking for different switches is there are huge packet dropped (outbound) in switches (outgoing toward both dell servers and netapp; incoming is ok) We recently moved PtoV so, it is possible that traffic volume was increased. But output doesn't give me lot of information like below. Do you have any recommendation for further t-shoot?

  • SAN or NAS for Premiere, experience/recommendation?

As we convert to Adobe CC from Final Cut, I must figure out if it's possible to hang a shared, mutually accessible media and project storage device between two Macs. I've talked to salespeople but I need some real world, user-oriented answers. If you're wiling to share, please drop me a note:
    dbogie_at_idahopower_dot_com
BTW, I tried, but searching for the terms SAN and NAS returns thousands of useless posts about San Francisco and NASCAR.
    many thanks

    Hi bogiesan,
Here's what we've said in the past:
Premiere Pro can work with network storage if it's mounted as a network volume (Mac OS) or mapped drive (Windows), and the OS-level device driver does not mark the volume as removable.
That said, Premiere Pro itself doesn't have any locking features so it's not set up to be used by multiple users at the same time. It is suggested that if you are going to have multiple users, split up the project into several smaller projects and then import all the sequences into a master project when completed.  It is recommended that all systems are locked to the same time of day to prevent reconforming of media files.
We do know that people want to work on shared projects, that is why we are developing Adobe Anywhere. I understand that, currently, Adobe Anywhere is not a solution for absolutely everyone looking to work in a shared environment. What I do have (although for CS6) is this white paper to see considerations on working with Premiere Pro in a SAN environment: bit.ly/SQQudc
    I hope it helps.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • NAS backup recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for NAS, simple or not, hard drives for use as a network backup device for a small office before I plunk down more money on one.
I currently have a Tritton Technologies simple NAS drive, but this was barely functional with the macintosh from the beginning and has recently ceased communicating with them at all. I still can access it quite easily on my intel based mac machines as long as I am running Windows, but cannot access at all from OS X. It was supposed to show up on the network, but didn't and the best their tech support could suggest was to physically call the drive using command K and then smb to the address. This worked, but no longer is functional with the most recent system updates.
I have checked the apple store and the only NAS drive they have has one review indicating that the drive has essentially the same problems that I am currently experiencing. I note that some people have suggested Buffalo. Is that the general consensus? Any reports from people currently using a setup that works for them? More importantly has anyone seen an NAS drive that comes with backup software from the drive manufacturer that will actually function in OS X?
    Thanks.
    Sean

I hate NAS drives, but I hear Buffalo is good, but slow, and I hear that you really don't want a LaCie NAS.
I do have a Ximeta NDAS that has "worked" since 10.2.x through 10.4.8, but it needs drivers and who knows when they'll be broken by an OS update, or if they'll have drivers for 10.5 and beyond!?
My Ximeta can only have one CPU with R/W permissions at a time, the others can only Read... sorta defeats the purpose.
I'm using it with the USB connection rather than the Ethernet, as it's about twice as fast, though not as fast as FW.
If you have GigaBit Ethernet all around, then a NAS may pay, but I use FW drives on most of my Networks and use Tri-Backup...
    http://www.tri-edre.com/english/index.html
    With Sharepoints...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
Which can backup any CPU to any Drive in the Network, to/from any other CPU/Drive.
Can't say enough good about Tri-Backup.

  • Recommended NAS solution for iTunes Server

I would like to get a NAS drive solution so I can have Itunes running without a PC/MAC running. What is the recommended vendor for NAS product that works well with macs
Once the new apple TV is out I would like the apple TV to stream from the NAS without having a computer on
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

I've been looking at the QNAP TS219P, which may be overkill for you. I've had issues streaming HD content (720 or 1080p) over wireless, less so with wired ethernet, but I'm still paranoid that the NAS is the slowest link sometimes.
If you check out smallnetbuilder.com you can see they compare different NAS boxes based upon their read/write speeds, you can even plot performance versus price. You need to make sure whatever NAS you get not only will support the read speeds of the video you plan on streaming (bitrate) but also whatever protocol Apple TV will use. Most QNAP's support iTunes servers, AFP (Apple's network protocol) and DLNA (a standard protocol for media servers). This is just what I've picked up in my research to purchase my own NAS box, although I wasn't considering Apple TV compatibility. I could be wrong, but if I had to guess, I think if you get a NAS with decent read/write/throughput (enough to at least match 720p and 1080p bitrates) and AFP/iTunes/DLNA support, you will be safe.

  • Which NAS you recommend for SMB backup storage

Synology and ReadyNAS would be my first choices in this category.  I have and use both and love them.  I've had quite good success with Buffalo as well with clients.  Nearly all storage engineers that I know when choosing this type of storage, like Kooler, choice Synology and ReadyNAS.
For backups and archives specifically I have had good luck with Drobo too.

For me it's always between Netgear and Synology. Now I'm back to Netgears (being a green guy here I cannot tell reason in public). For anything bigger then 2 SATAs in RAID1 economically reasonable to "roll your own" backup appliance. Recycled Dell R7xx and again recycled Windows Server 2012 R2 (because of SMB3 and decent backup-ready dedupe) appliance is very hard to beat! In case you don't have old server xByte has a stack of reburbished ones they sell cheap.--Planning to buy a NAS storage for our backups.Very small environment with VMware host, 7 VMs, Veeam backup.Total backup size 200GB, daily increment is around 7-10GB (Compressed). Will use the NAS for backup storage only and nothing else.Which brand do you recommend or use at your SMB locations:SynologyQNAPSeagateNetgear ReadyNASBuffalo

  • Can someone recommend a NAS device that works well with Macs?

I need to have a NAS (network attached storage) device that can be freely accessed by windows and mac computers. I rashly purchased an HP Mediavault; it was only $300 and has 2 500GB drives that I configured as raid-1 for safety. however if I load up a folder with 4000 files in it and browse to that directory, the mac finder thinks about this for say 30 seconds before it lists the files. The Windows machine can view the files in perhaps 4 seconds. I know that Macs have a slow file system but watching the little light blink on the NAS box and waiting so long is getting real annoying. Has anyone found a box that works well with macs and has good performance? These devices are so cheap now they must have crappy processors and stupid firmware. Perhaps someone can recommend a model that has some snap. I also need remote access via the web, and the insane HP software can only upload single files, can't upload a folder, which when you are working with 30,000 files like I am is no fun at all!

It's not really the brand as it is available printer drivers. Just be sure you verify that there is an available OS X printer driver.
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
Check the manufacturer's website for available printer drivers for any model in which you are interested.

  • Recommended Ethernet NAS HDD to Connect to Airport Extreme Base Station?

My Airport Extreme is about a year old, maybe 14 months old. My DSL modem functions as a bridge to my Airport Extreme. My iMac is plugged via ethernet into the Airport Extreme. In the garage, my MacBook is plugged via ethernet into an Airport Express, which wirelessly extends my network. I have Boot Camp on the MacBook, and the MacBook works well whether I boot Mac OS or Vista. I also have a USB splitter (router? i.e. 5 USB ports) plugged via USB into the Airport Extreme. I have an older, somewhat small USB external HHD plugged via USB into the USB router (or whatever the splitter is called) attached to the Airport Extreme. EVERYTHING IS WORKING. I REPEAT, EVERYTHING IS WORKING.
The USB HDD connected to the Airport is running out of space. I suppose I could just buy a newer, bigger USB HDD and copy the contents of the old USB drive to the new one, leaving the new one connected via USB to the Airport Extreme. However, I am not impressed with the speed of wireless copying from the MacBook in the garage over the wireless network to the USB drive connected to the Airport Extreme in the house. Plus, I have one empty ethernet port on the back of the Airport Extreme. Therefore, I am thinking of connecting an ethernet HDD via ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme. I have no desire to use that ethernet HDD for Time Machine, so the incompatibility there is not a problem. I just want to have a large, fast, ethernet storage drive plugged into the Airport Extreme for general network use. Can anyone recommend a good, fast, reliable ethernet HDD that is "plug and play" when connected via ethernet to Airport Express, i.e. something that will just show up and be visible and work without hassles?
In the simplest terms, I want to replace the USB HDD connected to the Airport Extreme with an ethernet HDD connected to the Airport Extreme and have the ethernet HDD be equally accessible as the USB HDD currently is. I need recommendations for an ethernet HDD that will make it easy.
I have the latest Snow Leopard on both the iMac and the MacBook. (I understand that Vista under Boot Camp on the MacBook will require me to map a network drive, but I figured that out for the USB HDD and would not expect any special problems doing the same thing for an ethernet HDD connected to the Airport Extreme.)

There are any number of things that can cause this, and normally the only fix is to do a complete system reset.
Sometimes you can reset the Modem and it will fix it other times reset the Extreme will fix it, I find the fool proof way is to shut your computer off. Pull the power adapter from your ISP's Modem and from your Airport extreme.
Wait a minimum of 5 minutes and then in order.
Re connect the power adapter to the ISP's Modem and you must wait for it to re-acquire the signal and the lights (Normally 3 depending on the modem they furnished). This normally take a minute.
Next you plug in the power adapter to the Airport Extreme Base and again you must wait about a minute to acquire the signal.
Now you can restart your computers. You should be good.
    Don
Remember this has to be done in the sequence mentioned above.

  • Recommendations on a NAS to fit exact needs in my SOHO

Most 4 bay NAS boxes should support RAID 10 these days.  AFAIK all of the Synologies do.

First of all, I know this question has already been asked a LOT in the community, so I'm sorry for the redundancy. That said, I'd really like to get some feedback tailored to the my exact setup so I can purchase the right NAS (there are a ton of them and they vary quite a bit!). I've never purchased a NAS box before, but are pretty familiar with their use/purpose. This will be used in my home and not for any business purposes (other than my home lab, if that counts). So here's what I'm looking to do with it:
    - Direct attach to our media PC to stream HD video to our TV (via USB 3.0, most likely)
    - Must be compatible with Plex Media Server
    - Setup OwnCloud so I can access my data remotely
    - Run Veeam backups to it (or possibly Unitrends, just need a free solution for my home lab VMs).
    - Run standard Windows backups to it (the native backup...

  • Can anyone recommend and NAS type server that is compatible with my apple products?

I am looking for a product that will allow me to store all of my music / videos / images and allow me to access them via my iphone and ipad (and AirPlay) and also allow access to my other half on her devices.
A NAS type server has been mentioned to me but it's not clear how the access from the mobile devices will work. (is it via an app??)
I would like it to act as a home server.
I'm not sure if it makes any difference but I don't currently own a MAC.
    Thanks in advance

the apple programs support accessing from shared itunes lib but only true ones even nas's which say they work like shared libs don't work
some nas like my sonology have apps for ios which allow me to play the media from them
and general upnp apps are also supported but you need to use 3th party apps

  • Can anyone recommend a NAS media server that works with iTunes 10.5?

I currently have an Iomega Home Media Server but have given up on Iomega ever updating their firmware to work with the latest version of iTunes. Any suggestions for a suitable (not Iomega) replacement would be gratefully received.
