NAS Server Systems?

I have a small office (5-10 Mac books) working on wifi, and we are needing a better way to store large art and video files somewhere other than external hard drives. (For the amount of work we do, we would simply have too many hard drives floating around). Also, I need all of my staff to have access to the same "cloud" server, as well as some satellite workers.
Someone recommended an NAS enclosure with multiple hard drives...Is this my best option? And if so, what are the best NAS servers out there?
Thanks!

How much data are you requiring the NAS  server to store and also serve consecutively?
What is the speed of the network connecting the Macs together?
I probably cannot answer your question but those are details that are required for a sensible reply.

  • I transferred files from a NAS server to the Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and now some of the files have Custom Access and can't  be opened by some users.  How do I fix this?

We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac.  These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's.  When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access.  The files that work properly don't have that configuration.  I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it.  We're all using PC's and they get the Error:  Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar.  I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions.  I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files.  Thanks for a solution!!

Oh, on the losing Internet, try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    Click OK.
PS. Your English is quite good & completely understandable.

  • Using a NAS hardrive system to store finished work

Hello, I've just purchased a NAS hardrive system to basically transfer and store my 'finished' work from Lightroom and Photoshop. In reading the manual for LIghrroom, am I correct in thinking that the NAS server cannot be a 'catalog' ?? I basically just want to correctly transfer across my finished files for storage there rather than on my main computer hard drive - and hence free up space on main computer. I'm just not sure of the process in how to go about this correctly? I still want to be able to access these finished files in case I need to revist something - but happy for them to be off the main computer? So... how do I export it all correctly?? If can help that would be greatly appreciated. I'm happy to leave the main catalog on main computer for projects currently being worked on....
    Cheers
    ALi

I'm a little confused by what you mean by finished work, as by default Lightroom doesn't store a finished work, it stores your edit instructions in the catalog file and then can display this finished work when you open/use Lightroom.
You can of course move your images (but not the catalog file) to a network drive. Move them there, without changing the folder structure, using your operating system and then reconnect via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
Do not use this as an opportunity to clean up or re-arrange your photos and folders.

2.everybody can create/save folders,docs... in it. (Black folders)

    what I must do?

    Hi.
How are the rights configured to be inherited? Could you do a "icacls <folder>" on each level and post it back.
Also worth considering is that this is a Linux Samba system, so it might not work as a regular windows system.

  • Time Maschine NAS Server

I have a problem getting access through Time Maschine to my NAS Server.
Some time ago the Server has been recognized, but now the system does not find it anymore.
I can access the server using the IP address and also the server appears in the finder, but only under the view point "Freigaben" in English this might be access and not under servers as an Ipod would do.
I have installed NFTS for Mac and I am able to open all folders and access all entries.
The only problem I have to be bale to select the server through the configuration settings of time maschine.
It is a NAS Server from Seagta NAS110 with 2TB space.
Is there any other hintsomeone is able to give me in order to solve the problem?
    Many thanks

Can I create an account server on a time capsule for all the computers in my house to use?
    No
There is no way to run applications on the Time Capsule. It is merely a wireless base station, file server and print server.

    Hi Jason
I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

  • How do I fix duplicates on a NAS server for itunes?

I have a dlink NAS server that I'd like to use as a network itunes server.  Problem is that it seems to create multiple duplicates of just about everything I have.  As a result I'll have 3 - 4 of everything.
Question - is there a way, or an application that anyone is aware of, that will let me to search for and delete duplicates on the NAS server?
    Thanks!

  • Use iTunes Library on a NAS server

    Hello all,
is there a better way to enjoy my music and movies all over the house than to use a NAS server - copy the iTunes folder there and select it as data source?
This is not the most elegant of all solutions: I need to mount the NAS every time, I need to take care every time that iTunes isn't running on 2 Macs…
    Thank you
    hp

Yes, you can split the library but it isn't a good idea.  Files would continue to go to the NAS but iTunes does not play well with NAS.  The problems you are having now might be magnified if you continue to have problems after moving your library file to your internal drive.  I have seen several very long topics where people were trying to repair broken links resulting from having a split library and iTunes using the locally stored .itl but then it couldn't see the media files on the NAS.
You need to find out what works for you to ensure the NAS is mounted and active before starting iTunes.

  • Is 1 server enough? Or should I employ a 2 server system? (60 to 1)

    *Brief Backgound:*
I have 60 LDAP directory bound clients (PPC eMacs and Intel iMacs) to one Dual G5 PowerMac server - such that students login on any client in one of the 3 computer labs, authenicate against the server, and mount their own home directory over the network.
    *The Issue:*
It seems to me that the student login process takes way too long to mount their home directories - they often, but not always, have to sit there and wait - and occasionally the authentication process hangs, requiring a forced reboot of the client. And it's worth noting that performance is not always quicker when only a few clients are in use.
    *My question:*
Do I need a second server to speed up the login process? Or, am I nowhere near needing a second server, and should I instead concentrate my efforts on other issues to figure out the slow login issue?
    *The Details:*
Clients are student eMacs and iMacs running 10.4.10, the slowest of which is 1GHz PPC with 384MB RAM and the newest is 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB RAM. All have a dedicated 100mbs wired network connection - that is, each computer has it's own CAT5 cable direct into a 3COM switch which is then connected via gigabit to the backbone switch that the server is tied into. Generally, kids use Safari, MS Office 2004, iLife apps, etc. I have a login hook to make Office look to the client not the server for fonts, etc. Any video work is done on a local user account, not over the network.
The Server is a connected to one of 2 backbone gigabit switches with gigabit (very nice Cisco). It's also running 10.4.10 Server. It's a 2.0GHz Dual G5 PowerMac with 2GB RAM and 2 hard drives. I use Workgroup Manager to manange client preferences. When I monitor the server, neither the processor nor the memory ever get taxed, and there's plenty of free disc space. I plan to replace it with a new 2.6GHz Intel Mac Pro this month, but should I replace it with 2 Mac Pros instead of 1?
    Concerns:
I find it a bit daunting to divide the current setup into a 2 server system, but if the results will have a very noticable impact on performance, then I'm willing to go that route.
*Many thanks in advance for your helpful advice!!!*

With your current setup, and just a few clients logging in, you should see pretty decent performance. If all 60 clients logged in at about the same time, you'd be pushing it.
    Things to consider:
A replica server with roughly half of the user homes to spread the load.
You mention two HD's, but how do you use them. If a new server is out of the question, you may consider an eSata RAID. You could take the two HD's you have, install the System on them and stripe them for faster performance. Even though you have some files stored locally, there's still a lot of little files flying around when clients log in. A striped system HD may make r/w access a lot faster. Put the network homes on the eSata in a RAID 5 for speed and redundancy. Assuming that the System doesn't change that much, keep a backup of the internal HD's as often as you need, and ditto for the external RAID.

  • Mountain lion 10.8.2 can not connect to windows NAS server Dell Sentinel

I recently upgraded to 10.8 OS My office is connected to a NAS server Dell Sentinel WD4000. Everything was working fine until the upgrade from 10.7 to 10.8 Now when I "connect to server" Not one of my accounts can connect. All I get is wrong password. The server connects to every computer on the network except the 10.8 The server shows up as an icon on Shared Devices.
Someone please help me. Apple has been useless.

I hope this helps.  But, Apple has confirmed a significant bug in 10.7.4 that breaks SMB.  Their support says they are working on it, but they do not know when the fix will be released.  It has broken SMB at all sites I support including my own location where Lion server has the updated version as well.  Only AFP works but not consistently.  The suggestion is to restore 10.7.3 from a backup or wait until the fix is released.  SMB does work - but only when admin authentication is used on Mac servers - don't know about Windows Servers.  I do know the client side of Mac's also are affected with SMB issues.  Good luck!

    Hi,
I recenty started instaling OBIEE 11g and got the same error : "Creating BI server system components". I read your solution and would like to know that if this patch is okay to install on a Windows VM (win server 2003 EE, SP2). If yes, after rebooting, do we reinstall ?
I am also getting the following errors:
    -Executing: opmnctl start coreapplication_obiccs1
    -Executing: opmnctl start coreapplication_obis1
    -Executing: opmnctl start coreapplication_obips1

  • Problems with my new NAS server - Bonjour,Samba,NFS

    Hello,
I need some help . Today i bought a older nas server from local store. It features Bonjour, Samba, FTP + NFS.
My mac is connected to my TP-LINK router via n wifi and the nas is connected to gigabit ethernet.
But i have some serious troubles.
    1. When i connect to a samba server i get a connection, get folders but when i want to read something i dont have right to do that.
I tried literally everything but cant get any progress. I can get great stable connection on windows machine , even in boot camp but cant get it working
    on mac os x.
    2. NAS features Bonjour + iTunes sharing. I turn it on and get itunes to respond but still cant get any discs (NFS), devices...nothing.
(Maybe some DNS problems ? )
    3. If i want to connect to NFS manually i have no luck.
So im asking for help, how can i access my files on NAS
    Any tips and help ?
    Thanks in advance !

Update: I continued searching and realized 'formatting' the phone was what I was trying to say. I followed the instructions, entered the code and started from scratch. All the previous problems were cleared up and it's running like a champ again! For anyone else who might need the codes:
because newer nokia devices have udp- user data preservation feature even if you reset your phone data will remian intact. the only way to truly get rid off your stuff is to use option 3 on this list. understand that you will lose all your data and make sure you ahve a back up of everything you need before doing this. the default code is always 12345. the restore setttings option DOES not remove any data, just restores default settings on your phone.
    1. *#7780#  - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for all operations listed here is 12345
    2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone
    3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. )
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.
