NAS Storage Suggestion

I've got a small networked office (with a laptop and a desktop) and am hoping for suggestions for a reliable long term solution for an NAS storage device that I can connect to my Time Capsule via ethernet connection. I will be using this device to Time Machine backup my MacBookPro.
The 1TB Time Capsule backing up my 500 GB Mac Pro.
Other information: I have an 500 GB external hard drive, connected to this via USB, that is serving as a "network server" for some relatively small project folders. These folders get backed up to the Mac Pro (so that /they/ also have a backup). I am using the extra space on this external drive in order to temporarily store large folders that need to be archived. This seems to be a reasonable solution to my need to access working project folders which contain files that I may need to work on from my desktop and my laptop. Ease of access (very direct without a lot of hoops) is extremely important in this case.
I have a design office and the G-Technology products are so nice looking.
At the same time everyone I talk with say go with Western Digital.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

If you are looking at a NAS device to connect to the Time Machine via the USB port, from the Drobo point of view I'd suggest the Drobo S rather than the Drobo FS; the FS connects via GB ethernet, and will essentially be replicating a lot of the functions of the Time capsule.
That said, the Drobo FS isn't that much more than the S, and it seems the network performance is better than the TC is capable of (by 2 to 3 times), if you were to connect it via ethernet and use it as a seperate device to the TC.
I'm actually in the process of looking for an alternative to my Drobo+Droboshare, and have been looking at TC. Reason being is that Drobo uses a proprietary RAID system (Beyond RAID or something) and that means if you get a hardware failure, the only way to recover your data is to invest in another Drobo device. You can't plug the drives into another make of device and pull the data off. The drives HAVE to remain as a 'pack' and if plugged individually into a 'powered on' other device, the drives are reformatted and wiped. Data lost.
TBH, the best value for money device I've seen so far is the ASUS TS mini NAS which uses windows home server and 2 500Gb hard drives, supposedly about 40-60 MB/sec of network performance (according to online tests) compared to 12 for the TC, and 20-30 for the Drobo FS, and is about the same cost as the 1TB time capsule. However, wife wants 'Apple' and it is windows, so ....
works well though (or at least the WHS install on an old Dell optiplex does).

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

  • Is it possible to use NAS storage (which is wired via LAN to AirPort Extreme) as a Time Machine destination?

Is it possible to use NAS storage (WD My Cloud EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4) which is wired via LAN to current AirPort Extreme, as a Time Machine backup destination?
There are two reasons I came up with this question.
    - Connecting via Ethernet should be faster than USB 2.0 connection
    - 8TB NAS storages are slightly cheaper than 8TB USB HDD
If it is impossible, I am planning to buy My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and wire it for MacBook Pro directly for the purpose of Time Machine backup.
I have a concern with my primal idea of backing up via WiFi, as I tend to handle big files when doing music production or movie editing. I wonder if this affect the performance of MacBook Pro, as it might take more time to complete each backup via WiFi.
Many thanks for your advice in advance,
    Masa
MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch (Mid 2012)
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I would appreciate any advice which could include aother sollition of secure and practical backup.

  • Xbox 360 and nas storage for streaming media

    Hi there,
I have an xbox 360 and watch movies on it through my network that are stored on my home PC, this means that I have to have my home PC on whenever I want to watch a movie. What I would like to do is have a NAS storage device that I can store all my movies on that is on the same notwork so that I can then watch the movies on my xbox without the need for the PC being on. Obviously I would want the NAS to be seen by the computer's I have on my network also.
I way thinking about getting this item Western Digital - My Book Live 1TB External Home Network Drive - Black but am not sure if the xbox will see it? or is there a better solution for around the same price which is expandable?
    Thanks.

You'd have to get a real home or business NAS product to stream to the 360 and those are not in the same price range as the product you are looking at.

  • NAS Storage on Azure Backup Services

Hi are looking to use the new Azure Backup Services to backup our on premise data. Unfortunately, we use NAS boxes for a large amount of data and mount them as drives and these are not showing as valid backup sources on the agent software.
Can we use the Azure Backup Services to backup the NAS data or will we have to resort to using a third oarty coupled with a BLOB storage account?
    Regards
    Matt

    Hello Matt,
    Thanks for posting here!
I think NAS storage backup is not supported by Azure Backup.
For more information check this link:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj573031.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396#BKMK_faq_10
You can use third party software to back it up as a storage blob.

  • NAS Storage itunes match

I'm working offshore so generally away from home for 4-5 weeks at a time, and I have recently added itunes match to my works Laptop, with approx 500 songs.
I haven't signed up to Match on my home PC(yet) and also I haven't added my FULL music library to the home PC yet, but I remember that my NAS Storage shows up in my itunes library as an External Device/ library in the house, i think i can just keep ALL my music which will be approx 40K songs in my NAS and simply dragg and drop to match, without reaching the limit.
does anyone else use a NAS with itunes as a media server. and does it impact on the limit of 25k

25K songs is the limit for iTunes Match. You can have more than that in the iTunes library, but only the first 25K scanned will be available via iTunes Match.

  • Windows nas storage

Does anyone have experience of using NAS storage with iTunes. I am considering buying a WD Mycloud for normal storage and for containing my iTunes library. Would this work? I'm using Windows 7 and the latest iTunes

    Hi,
You can edit the shared folder’s security permissions from Windows. Right click the shared folder and select 'Properties', under the 'Security' tab click 'Edit'.
For more detaile information, please refer to the “Users can create their own folders and edit the permissions on Windows” part in the article below:

  • Is any user using NAS storage?

Is any user successfully using NAS storage such as synology connected to TC, (not for time machine or backups) mostly for placing your final edited movies, fotos and slides shows, so they can be viewed on the ipads, ipods?
    Thanks for any input

    Hello Yogesh,
Yes you can reset the password for any body using ABAP Code. But for that you really don't need any client number.
If this process is on regular basis, then recommended is to use BAPI for changing the user details Otherwise BDC also works fine.
    => Function Module - BAPI_USER_CHANGE
Call this in the program for resetting the password.
=> CALL TRANSACTION 'SU01' USING InternalTable
This will be executed in the BDC of SU01 transaction recording. Use the Password Change button in the application toolbar of transaction while recording.
    Hope this helps.

  • E3000, USB NAS storage - disk disappears when unit sleeps the drive

Working to get network attached storage working on my new E3000.  Have Western Digital My Book drive and the unit has a feature where the disk goes into a sleep mode when not used.
Appears that when the disk does this when attached to the E3000, the router thinks the disk is gone. Trying to connect to the drive from the network does not seem to wake up the storage.
Like to be able to save power and wear by not spinning the disk all the time....
    Firmware 1.0.03
    Any suggestions?

the issue is the drive is going to sleep and the router can not detect it to wake it up. western digital has stated (based from others who have contacted WD support) the drive is not compatible with NAS'ed routers.
i dont know about WD but seagate has software in the drive to disable the sleep state..
and you would rather have the drive SPINNING rather than sleeping/spinning/sleeping as this causes MORE WEAR vs. having it spin constant.
i have a couple buffalo drives 500gb, and had one on an e2 and e3 and now an e42(which ive now added a 2TB seagate go flex drive--no issues btw...) and never had them spin down and give the error.
so perhaps since you can not disable the sleep mode on the WD, and that WD itself has stated thru internet users/google searchers, that this drive is not a good fit.. perhaps you should replace the drive.

  • NAS device suggestions ...

    Hi,
I would like to have a NAS drive with gigabit ethernet to do my nightly backup. What are the best suggestions for this NAS ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert Lespérance

    Robert,
I'm currently using an Netgear (former Infrant) ReadyNAS NV+ (http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/ReadyNASNVPlus.aspx)
Mine came with 2x 500 Gb SATA disks in a mirror (models vary), which I can later expand to a RAID5 set when I run out of disk space (can take 4 disks in total).
It's very silent and does it's job very well; all the info is online.

  • External Hard Drive Storage suggestions

    Hi
I have an Imac and want to buy some media storage device. I am using it for video editing etc so transfer speed is pretty important.  This machine does not have thunderbolt from what I can see.  looks like I am stuck with an expensive machine with only USB2.0 and I know nothing about firewire.
is there a external hard drive you can recommend that will give me fast transfer?
some suggestions would be great and thank you very much

If your machine has Firewire 800 that is substantially faster than USB 2. In that case what I'd recommend is OWC Mercury Elite Pro (www.macsales.com), if you are not aware of OWC they specialize in Macs and what they sell is well supported, thoroughly tested and high quality. They are also well thought of in general on these forums.
Other good drives are Lacie and G-Tech, however of the 3 I tend to like the OWC due to their build quality and support.

  • Partition external HD to use it for time machine backup and nas storage

i have a macbook pro with retina display with 500gb of ssd storage runing yosemite and a airport extreme latest model.
what i want to do is to use an external drive (1TB) and use it to hold all my files of my macbook, and i want to make time machine backups for each drive over airport extreme.
so i have made in my mind a backup plan and im not sure if it will work.
im planning to buy a 4TB external HDD and make 3 partitions, one for my macbook of 500gb, another for my external drive of 1TB and a third to use it as a NAS.
im not an expert in storage but i have read a lot from internet.
    Thanks.

so i have made in my mind a backup plan and im not sure if it will work.
    It won't work with TM..
TM will either backup the internal disk plus external or internal only.. it cannot backup external only. So there is no point using 3 partitions.. just two will work fine.
You can buy Carbon Copy Cloner and it will work fine doing backups of internal and external as separate items.. but it is better over network to backup as sparsebundles.. much faster than direct copying.. but it does work.
As a NAS.. an Airport Extreme plus USB drive.. is slow.. might be ok over wireless.. because the wireless is even slower.. but it is not ok over ethernet. A Time Capsule or a cheap single disk nas will work a lot better.
So your plan can be made to work.. just need some adjustments.
BTW be very careful what USB drive you buy. Not all work on the USB of the Airport routers.
USB drive compatibility with Airport Routers. Help make database.

  • NAS storage and catalogs on several PC's?

I have a collection of some 28.000 photo's, stored on files by camera, date and type (e.g. Canon40d, RAW 2009, Nikon d100 JPG 2003 etc). All these photo's, including edits (JPG, TIFF and PSD) are on my desktop's drive, together with their LR catalog. Most of the editing I do on my desktop (E7500 processor, Win 7, 8Gb) Since about 6 months, I'm using LR to manage and edit my photo's.
I have renamed them all according to capture time and file type: yyyymmdd_xxxxx.NEF (or CR2, TIF; PSD; JPG etc)
In order to be able to work on my laptop, too (I7, Win8, 8Gb ) I have copies of all the photo files and a second catalog on the laptop. However, with every import and edit on either computer I would have to syncronise  photo files and as well as catalogs - which is almost undoable.
Therefore, I have copied all photo files and their xmp Sidecars to a NAS drive. I want to store all data on the NAS drive, and to be able to work from either desktop or laptop. I understand I will have to synchronise catalogs now and then, but I think this is easier than updating both catalogs and data files every time I have worked on one or the other computer. I have understood that I can't keep my catalog on thew NAS drive, since this is a network drive. And is it smart to use xmp Sidecar files for edits or should I include all edits in my catalogs (since most editing will be done in or the other catalog's Smart Previews)?
For recent imports I have made Smart Previews, since I understood I these allow me to work on my photo's without directly adressing the master file. Thus, right now LR is making Smart Previews from all my other photo's.
What should be my next step?
Copy my desktop catalog to the laptop and change the default drive for all photo's to the NAS's adress?
Make a whole new catalog by re-importing all photo's with Smart Previews into a new catalog?
Or follow a completely different route?
Keep using xmp Sidecar files or reimport edit data into the catalog (in that case, I have would have to rebuild my catalog with edits and delete all xmp files, right?)?

    Bobcominitaly wrote:
Thanks for replying, I'm getting a little bit further. Rhight now my photo collection is stored on both desktop and NAS - including xmp Sidecar files. My desktop is still working at creating Smart Previews for my catalog, and I'm thinking furiously about my next steps.
As of the xmp issue, I'm still in the dark. Right now, I think my next step would be re-entering the edit data into my desktop catalog, and then delete all xmp files from my photo libraries on the NAS drive. Main question regarding this is: does the catalog just contain a pointer tot the xmp file, or does it also hold the information on edits? In that case, xmp files in the photo library would be superfluous and possibly confusing - better erasing them.
I can't think of a good reason to delete all xmp files. In fact, I think this is a pointless waste of time. Just let them sit there, they aren't hurting anything (they're not really helping any part of your process either)
As I said, your Lightroom catalog does not care what is in the XMP files. It doesn't use that information at all. Everything you see on the screen in Lightroom is displayed that way because of the information in the catalog file; and changing or deleting the xmp files won't make a difference to what you see on the screen in Lightroom.
Next, I would probably do some test edits on files in my desktop's catalog, with NAS drive switchrd on and off - just to see whether my edits are picked up and synchronized with my files on disk. What pitfalls might I expect, and what should I pay attention to?
Going back to your original goal of having the same information in Lightroom when working on either your laptop or your desktop, I again see no point in doing this. It is in the information in the catalog files that matters; whatever is written to the files on the NAS is not relevant to the original goal.
On several occasions I found the suggestion of keeping one catolog for both desktop and laptop on an external drive (USB), eventually porting the Smart Preview Library to both laptop and desktop computer. Is this a valif procudure, and what are the pitfalls or penalties in it? Speed loss, catalog corruption?
This is a very good way to achieve the stated goal of having the same information in Lightroom when working on either your laptop or your desktop.
Am I at least a little bit on track? Or is it ...Rethink?
Your concerns about xmp files and information written to the photo files themselves are completely off track, and as I indicated, IMO a total waste of time. This will not get you to the stated goal. You seem to be confused and not understanding how Lightroom actually works. Lightroom stores all changes and information in its catalog files, and whatever is stored in xmp files or in the photo files themselves (except for the actual image) is ignored by Lightroom.
You should be concerned with either having the same catalog file available to both computers. Putting the catalog file on an external Hard Disk is one way to make this happen. Another way to make this happen is to Export and Import catalogs (not export and import photos) from one computer to another, as I described earlier. Smart previews should help, but are not mandatory to making this work.

  • Storage suggestions for FCP

    Hi all,
I'm an AVID editor of 15 years and have recently (finally) established my own company. I can't possibly justify the cost of a new Avid, not when FCP does the same thing for so much less. Also, so many clients are calling for me to freelance and they have all ditched their Avid's and are now running FCP. Time to bite the bullet and crossover.
My main question is..... I need a storage solution. It must be a raid solution. I am currently looking at a Huge Systems rack mounted solution (the system will be road cased from time to time) but wanted to know if there were other suggestions, and would an Avid Media Dock raid array work for FCP? I will be doing both SD and HD (not HDV, full uncompressed 10 bit HDcam and 2k RED Raw format when released). I have allocated approximately $10,000 aussie dollars for the storage solution. Not sure whether to go SCSI, Fibre Channel or ESATA.
Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    This could do the work:
    http://www.barefeats.com/swift.html
(problem: inside your G5... no mobility!)
    ... or ...
    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/sep/13raid.html
(old doc, but you can see the prices!)
Use fibre ... if you´re about to work with HDCam buy a XServe RAID with 14 "barracudas" then you can use multiple stream HDCam!
I´ve been working with Avid for the last 9 years... since 2004 i´m using FCP and Avid (it depends on client´s NLE system!), i don´t know if you can use the Avid LVD´s to work with FCP... it should be possible if you format them and raid them but they are scsi... hum... go to the next step! - if you need a guy to help you ... i´ll fly from Portugal, eheheh!
    Best´s!

  • NAS storage - share the space between 2 different servers ?

I have 2 - Solaris 10 servers. One of the servers has a 150GB NAS attached storage that is mounted using NFS.
I would like my other server to be able to see and utilize the storage. Is there a way I can do that using NFS in the /etc/vfstab or would I need to set something up like Samba ?

If the first server has it NFS mounted, why don't you just repeat that on the second server?
You can either hard-mount it at boot in the vfstab or set up an automounter entry.
