NAS suggestions please for iMac and MBP

I have an iMac (new style 2.8 Extreme with 750gb HDD) that I want to share the data with my MBP. I would like all my documents on a central drive that both machines read and write to.
I do have a g-tech 750gb FW800 drive that I want ot use to back up my docs, photos and movies.
Any help / suggestions please?

I really like the Terastation by Buffalo (www.buffalotech.com).
HP has a good product called MediaVault with a single hard drive sizes from 250 or 300GB I don't remember to 500GB with another expanable slot for any drive size.

  • Can I use 3-5 TCs in my office to "decentralize" data for imac and MBP?

    Hi Apple Gang!
I recently switched from Windows to Mac and I am pretty happy with what I have seen so far. My newest baby is a 2TB Time Capsule, which works wonderfully so far.
Since I was used to work with only 1 PC in the past, I have lots of external USB harddisks which I connected via a USB hub.
For the future I would like to store the many TBs wirelessly on like a "stack" of Time Capsules. (One having the LAN cable from my Internet Router and the others just wirelessly working in the same network.)
I am not sure why this is discussed nowhere online. Maybe it is dumb to do or something, but I really don't mind spending additional $ in order to be as cable-less as I can. (Would not like to buy NAS devices that need many LAN cable connections and stuff.)
    *So again... My vision is:*
*- an imac on the desk*
*- my mbp in the bedroom*
*- 3 - 5 Time Capsules on the desk, offering access to my (TC stored) files via any of my two computers.*
Is this possible? Is it hard to configure?
    Best regards,
    Chris

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
If all those Time Capsules are in the same place, it would be a lot cheaper just to connect multiple external disk drives to one Time Capsule through a USB hub. You don't need the networking/Wi-Fi capability of multiple Time Capsules.

  • Would like to buy TC to replace AE for iMac and MBP; questions

    hi all--
currently i have a dual-band airport extreme on bridge mode connected by ethernet to my AT&T Uverse wireless router. we have several Airport Express' and an ATV2 in the house and the 2 wireless connections; the g put out by Uverse, and an n put out by the AE. I switch to either one depending on location. I have a WD 1TB drive hooked up to my 750GB iMac via FW800. for years that was fine as the iMac was the main computer and i just worried about it's backups.
now we have upgraded a 2007 MacBook to a new MBPro w/ a 500GB SSD, 12 GB RAM, and an i7 chip. needless to say, now THIS computer has become pimary, as it blazes!! but now since there's so much info on it, it really needs to be backed up as well.
i'm OK with basic/moderate connectivity, but sometimes get confused by more complex issues. so let me throw my wants at you. i'm hoping that i can buy the 3TB TC to replace the AE and WD drive, split the TC drive into 2 partitions, and keep the iMac hooked up to it via ethernet, and let the MBPro back up wirelessly to it's own partition.
i guess this might be pretty basic and obvious, but before i buy all this and sell my old equipment, i'd like to make sure it should work. i've never set up a TC before, but i hope that i can just tell it to use the prior settings for the AE to get most setup issues out of the way. and i'm not quite sure how (or when in the process) to partition the TC drive, assuming i can.
if someone can advise me whether this setup is possible, and how to (or a link on how to) partition to TC drive for the 2 computers that would be fantastic. the main reason i'm unsure about doing this is that on Apple's TC page, they really only seem to discuss all computers backing up wirelessly, which would be silly for the iMac since they're side-by-side.
any thoughts for me, my faithful bretheren?

You cannot partition the TC drive but the two computers can use TM to their own areas without any need for you to intrude.. That part Apple do a good job of. The backup sparse bundle is effectively a disk image and the computer keeps track of it by virtual of serial numbers.. you will have no issues.
And the iMac can use ethernet which will be much faster.. you should do both backups initially by ethernet.. once completed the MBP can backup via wireless.. but the speed of wireless will make a mockery of your SSD.. wow, 500GB SSD.. !!
The TC should be relatively easy to slot into place of the AE.. it is really the same thing.. but I sure would NOT sell it all off until you get everything working.. and I would still keep the firewire drive just as a further backup.. there is nothing wrong with using a different software and then leaving the FW drive in a friend or relatives house for a rainy day.

  • Can I download FCPX on my imac and MBP using the same apple ID?

Hello,  I am just wondering how it works with mac store apps.    I use both my imac and MBP for my work.   Will I have to re buy FCPX for both, or can I use it on both with the same apple id?   This works with apps on my 2 iphones and ipad, but I was not sure about imac and MBP.
Thank for any info you can give

Don't mention it. Although I'm one of those dispised Americans. Worse yet, I come here for four or five months then leave. Then I tell all our American friends awful lies about Canadians.

  • Does there exist in Belgium voiceover training for imac and ipad for the visually impaired?

I think that everything that he wants to do is very doable. It would be quite a project for someone to take on for him. If it is a popular hymnbook it may well be a welcome blessing/gift of love for many others as well if made available. As I would envision the project it would require either the sacrifice of a copy of the hymnal or the availability of a loose leaf version of the hymnal, so that the individual pages could be taken apart and scanned. The scanned pages could then be assembled into a pdf document that is easily readable on many apps available for the iPad. Better still would be to research if the publishers of the hymnal have not already created an electronic version of the book in pdf format. If the publisher has not already crossed this bridge, then their permission would legally need to be secured before starting such a project of copying their compilation of hymns. Even though they may not own the rights to an old hymn which is now in the public domain, they hold the rights to the layout and composition of the printed pages of their hymnal.
The Accessibilty settings in the iPad itself is capable of enlarging text for the visually impaired, as well as providing white text on a black background.

  • Can I sync my iMac and MBP in word processing?

Is it possible to sync an iMac and MBP when doing word processing? If so, how can it be done?
I know there are programs that can sync iCal bewteen the two such as BusyMac. Is there one that do the same thing with a word processor?

If you keep you documents in the same folder on both units it is possible. I usually just pick up the folder and drag to the one that has the older files. This way the folders remain updated.
You can also use Mobile Me, something I do not have to much knowledge on.

  • Is find my computer  available for imacs and macbook pro

is find my computer  available for imacs and macbook pro? please

No problem - if you're worried about that iMac walking away, I'd purchase a Kensington lock for it: I have one for my Apple Thunderbolt Display and my MacBook. No guarantee that a dedicated thief couldn't use a pair of bolt cutters but they give me some peace of mind.

I forgot my password for iMac and don´t know how to iniciate it. I don´t have the CD to do it....Anyone could help me?

    Resetting or changing a password:
For Snow Leopard or earlier:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
    For Lion or later:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6022
    This is also useful:
    http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipad-iphone/news/?newsid=3463233&olo=email
If it's running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the Option key held down, click on it, and use the Reset Password utility.
If it's running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down, open the Terminal, and use the resetpassword command:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101
If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
If you are in another country:

If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion you won’t have been given disks. Instead you use the recovery partition or internet recovery:

  • Serial number for iMac and Lap top

I have just upgraded to LR5. I have it set up on my IMac no problem. I am wanting to be able to use it on my laptop also. In previous versions of LR i have been able to use the same Serial Number for laptop and the iMac (as long as they are both not running at the same time), however I am not able to do this with LR5? Do I need to buy another serial number? If so, how do i do this?
    Thanking you greatly in advance,
    Lauren

Hi! I have the same problem. Lightroom 5 installed correctly in my MBP but when I try to install it on my iMac (with the same serial number and Adobe ID) it does not work because "not valid", as it says.
I've read that the same user could use the program at least in 2 different computers, so this was a big - sad - surprise. I'm quite disappointed with it and soon I will get in touch with the Adobe assistance

  • INternet speed difference between iMac and MBP

I have an imac 27" that is barely one year old and a three year old MBP. Today, I signed up for faster Fios internet service which is supposed to be a maximum of 25 Mbs both up and down. I then checked the speed on my iMac and see I am averaging about 10 Mbs down and about 8 Mbs up. I am not that concerned that I am not getting the theoretical maximum performance. For one thing I am not hardwired to my router but am using wireless g. I also ran the Mac internet tuner that seemed to actually increase the speed somewhat.
I then checked my MBP that is sitting right next to my iMac. I am getting around 15 Mbps down and about 17 Mbps up. I repeated this several times as I did for the iMac. I am surprised at the iMac being so much slower (about 33% slower). I can only assume the hardware in the MBP is better for wireless communication than in the iMac. Can someone explain why this is so?
    thanks,
    Shannon

Download an app such as Speedtest to your iPad.  Test both ways and see the results for yourself.

  • HDTV for iMac and back to HDTV

    Hi,
I wanted to know if there was a way to watch over the air HD channels on my Intel-based Aluminum iMac and then feed this to my SONY HDTV. (I am only interested in the basic channels CBS, NBC, ABC etc.)
**The major problem is my room's location. I have an antenna that can pick up over the air channels, but the orientation of my room is wrong for picking up CBS, NBC, etc. My room faces the east and it should face the west to pick up HD channels.
Just wanted to know if there's a workaround for the Mac regardless of my room's location so that I don't have to spend money to get a cable company over here to install dishes just to watch news channels in HD.
    Thanks!

After getting approved with Discover and Chase this week, I really debated on whether to go to straight to the garden or apply for another card or two.  When i looked at my 3b fico report that I just bought, I realized that one of my closed (and longest account) was recently dropped from EQ and TU.  EX still shows it.  That means my AAoA is going to bottom out big time along with my scores when these new accounts and the new mortgage  shows up. I decided to apply for Amazon while i could.  I needed a card that will grow with me while I am gardening.  If I can't apply for new credit, at least I can ask for CLI's to appease that "want" for a while lol.  I was approved for $2700.  It sure is going to be boring in the garden!! Congrats!  And yes it is boring in the garden.  Most of the new accounts aren't CLI ready...and occasional 300.00 here and there, lol!    Come join us

  • Advice Needed on Rebuilding OSX SL on iMac and MBP

I am rebuilding my iMac and MacBook Pro from the scratch with Snow Leopard. At the moment, I have almost completed installing the operating system, system updates and 3rd party apps on my iMac.
The question is: Can I just clone the iMac drive with all the ready-to-use system to MBP and made some adjustment in MBP (e.g. hostname, etc)?
The iMac is 2008 Alu while the MBP is 2008 unibody.
The goal is not to repeat installing the whole thing again and I would like to have as-close-as-possible mac between the two.
    Thanks....

NO. don't even try that. it will result in either completely unbootable or a seriously malfunctioning system.

what you can do is use migration or setup assistant. do a wipe and install on the MBP. on the first boot after that you'll get setup assistant which will ask if you want to import your data from another mac. choose that option and migrate from the imac. use either ethernet or firewire connection. don't try to migrate over wireless.
    Thanks....

  • Pages for imac and ipad

I just bought the 27 inch imac and also have an ipad. Do I need to buy separate versions of pages for both or can I buy it once and use it on both?

Do I need to buy separate versions of pages for both or can I buy it once and use it on both?
That is true for all apps, by the way. OS X and iOS aways require different versions.

  • How to access same Artist Lessons on both my iMac and MBP

I can access Garageband on both my iMac and my MBP but when I try to access the artist lessons on either, I cannot download any lesson that's not on the other.

You "access" GarageBand, the artist lesson or any other apps or files because they are "installed" on a specific machine.
You have installed GarageBand on both machine but it seems that you have not installed (downloaded) all the lessons on both machines.
On whatever machine you want to use the artist lessons you have to open GarageBand and download the lessons on that machine. GarageBand stores those files in a specific location. You can actually check if they are there. They are in the system Library. Here is the path:
