NAS/Time Machine AFP problem
Since installing Lion, Time Machine won't play - I get this message now. Concerned that (a) cannot back up and (b) cannot access previous backups (saved on a NAS). Is there any way to roll back to Snow Leopard?

Lucky you Ken. Unfurtunately, my NAS is a DS207+. Any Synology NAS ending in 07 is getting dropped. There was a recent DSM update that my NAS is not picking up for that reason. All those of us with -07 units can hope for is a hotfix. Otherwise, this may come down to either a) upgrading netatalk manually on the NAS (could be somewhat painful) por b) resorting to CIFS or SMB. I dont think CIFS is too bad but it does seem to get penalized big time with small reads/writes based on the benchmarks I have seen. AFP is much more efficient, longer time-outs, etc. so I would prefer to stick with it. Specially when that it is native to OSX.
For now, I am switching my scripts over to CIFS until Synology makes a decision... :-(

So...I created a Time Machine AFP Server connection when I first got Lion (to backup things wirelessly). Everything was working fine...but then I moved my modem/router to the home office, rather than the living room. Now my Mac can't find the AFP server. I'm assuming it's because the address changed. How can I find which address to set it to (it's connecting to an airport extreme) to correct this issue?
What we get in the error log for Calendar Server for example is:

Yet, a refresh doesn't have this error. It just seems that randomly it will decide not to authenticate for me (in this example). And seconds later it will authenticate.
I have authentication set as "Any method". If I try "Digest", I can't log in. If I try just "Kerberos" it behave as "Any method", complete with the above occasional errors.
Any ideas anyone? -
Clean Install of Mountain Lion and restore from NAS Time Machine
Dear all
Sorry if this question was answered elsewhere but I could only find basic information.
Seek your advice on this. I am currently running Lion 10.7.4 on my mid-2009 MBP and now that Mountain Lion update 10.8.1 has been released, I am thinking of doing a clean install of the OS to clear out all the previous clunk. My Time Machine backups are stored on an NAS and with the clean install of of Mountain Lion intend to do the following:
a. Restore the applications and data from the NAS Time-machine backup
b. Keep/retain the backup history as per the NAS Time Machine for future backups
How can I do this in the most efficient, painless and safest way, please?

StanI did a mountain lion install (to clean new Hard Drive) and restored everything (including Applications) from time machine on my ReadyNAS Duo. It did not override applications. It actually seemed to have realised that they were old and imported NONE of the applications from my time machine back up.

Drobo NAS and Time Machine restore problems
My HDD crashed. I installed a new one. Reinstalled OSX Mavericks and tried a Migration Assistant from a DROBO 5N NAS (holding the Time Machine sparse.bundles). Profiles reinstalled, no data, no applications. Weird. I have tried Drobo, I have tried Apple consultant - recommended by Apple's support website. No success in getting the restore to take place with Apple software. Wondering if I can do this file by file. I really only care about the 1TB of movies, music, photos I have on iTunes and Aperture backups inside of the sparse.bundle files. Everything else I can reload. Please help. I have been down since July 15 on my home theater and photo library. Need to get this up and running ASAP. Everything looks OK on the backup file. When I try to simply copy the data files to my new HDD I get the dreaded OSX file copy error after about 200GB - which takes an incredibly long amount of time on my wireless home network (about 5 hours). Really need an expert to help out on this one. Please let me know if you can.

You state it's running 10.5.8 but that it's only 9 months old; those two don't match up. If it is only 9 months old, bring it in to an Apple Store ("genius" bar appointment) and have them check it over. It sounds like it may be a HD issue to me. -
MyBook World Edition - Time Machine - AFP Issue
So after 60 mins on the phone with the ppl at WD, it was determined that i most likely have any issue with Time Machine accessing the wd_backup partition of my mybookworld NAS drive. Simply put - I can access the drive via SMB ('cept for the backup partition - which is what i want anyway) but TM (nor the finder) wont access the backup partition at all.
WD says its an AFP issue. Ive spent all day searching google and forums and I cant find a good answer. Can anyone help?
ThanksSorry I'm not adding anything positive but I too am having problems with my MBW NAS drive. Every time I try to connect with the "Public" drive, I get the "The operation cannot be completed because the original file for "Public" cannot be found." I connect through SMB as well but it is annoying. I never been able to connect to MBW-Backup. Again, sorry to piggyback but just wanted to let you know you are not alone in your search.

Time machine backup problem with upgrade to Lion - Choose Backup Disk button non-existant
Hi, I just upgraded my mac mini to Lion and have encountered a problem with by Time Machine. It no longer sees my networked drive for back up. So, I followed the instructions on this site http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/ and get to item 6b. and have a problem I have not been able to sort out. Instead of the button "Choose Backup Disk" on the Time Machine window, I have a button "Select Disk" with a button "Options" under it. When I click "Select Disk" I get a window promtping me to "Set Up Other Time Capsule" and clicking that takes me to a window for AirPort Utility. (screen shot )
Anyone know why I don't have the right button for starters and why I can't access any drives on my machine at all? I followed the web instructions on the site I mention above because initially I had an error about AFP, so suspected the drive set up here (it is my work) is incompatible.
(The only IT guy we have is on vacation for 2 weeks and then I am on vacation for 2 weeks and can't wait a month in order to back up! Thought I would try here to see if I can get answers before I am away.)
Thanks in advance!i had a similar problem when I first installed Lion last year. It seems that some network NAS products need a firmware update to work with Lion. I contacted the manufacturer and they helped me out. I am using a Synology NAS system. Problem solved after firmware update.

Time machine backup problem with company backup.
I have serious problems with making backups of our company computers by Time Machine.
We have Synology NAS with Time Machine Support. When I made setting for Time Machine backups (users, shares, quotas, etc. ) ewerything worked fine. All Time machines uses one directory, that appears on the network like a Time capsule. Machines have their own accounts with quotas etc. After a few days started many problems. Some Time Machines has missed their target sparsebundles and unsuccessfully tried write into some others. After Time Machine restart and new manual setting problem persisting. Only successfull solution is complete remove all affected sparsebundles (miss all older backups) and make new ones. This problems appears on many different computers with various OSX version 10.6 - 10.8.
Can you help me with this problem?I have used OS X Server on an Xserve and gained the impression that it did little that OS X would not do. Earlier versions had a fairly easy to use GUI but as it developed it became more tedious and unreliable than using OS X on the same hardware. It was far from cheap for unlimited users even with educational discounts.
At one time OS X Server was more advanced than the same version number OS X - about half a version ahead.
I am not saying that it may not be faster to set up if you have had previous OS X Server experience but it is a steep learning curve after only OS X experience. The average user would get there faster with one of the many tutorials on the web about using OS X as a server.
At one time OS X Server had a security bug in that it confused FTP root with machine root under some conditions leaving the whole disk open to the public. -
Time Machine backup problems with firewire 800 since Mavericks
Since I installed Mavericks about a week ago, I have had problems with TM not working with my LaCie external drive. At best, it would not back up when the mac was awakened from sleep mode and in use. When I would open time machine preferences, I would see the "preparing for back up" prompt that would last forever. Not only was it doing that, I have found that it would freeze my mac. I figured this out when I was not able to get my mac to respond from the login screen. It was basically frozen and couldn't log on. I noticed the back up drive light flickering but nothing would happen even with waiting a long time. I finally figured out that shutting off the TM EHD would unfreeze the mac and it would start functioning normal again. This was happening with my external HD daisy chained to another external drive that contains my iPhoto, iMovie and Itunes files. That drive was also connected to the mac using firewire 800. I tried many different configurations, switched the order the drives were daisy chained, tried different cables and even directly connected the TM drive with firewire 800 to the mac, but the problems still persisted. The strange thing is that when I connect the TM drive through USB, it works flawlesly and no hanging up of the computer. Thats what Ive been forced to do. I have my other EHD connected directly through firewire 800 and it works fine. I only have one firewire 800 port, and since it works fine with my other LaCie drive, it makes me think its not the port or macs hardware? I can only guess this is a Time Machine issue or something wrong with my TM drive? I have been in contact with LaCie and given them all these details but I have not heard back yet on what they feel the problem is. I thought I would post this to see if anyone else had some experience with this problem.
Forgot to mention I did that. Completely erased and reformatted HD and then reconnected to TM. Didn't help. I did have the mac hang up while installing Mavericks and had to eventually shut off the external drive. It did that to me the firs time I tried to install Mavericks and I lost all my data because it did a clean install after that. I had another back up on CCC so I just restored from there. This time the update to Mavericks transferred my data. I have had TM hang up my mac in the past on occasion, but I was always able to shut down the drive and then the mac would return to normal. Perhaps I should try to erase and reformat again?

No. In order to back up the hard drive using Time Machine, the drive must be connected to your Mac, not the Time Capsule. -
Time machine - 2 problems I can't solve
Time Machine problems... I have them. And I have given up after spending hours googling, reading, trying and getting nowhere. I really hope there is some experts out there who have the time and energy to help me out. So, here goes. Crossing my fingers!
Problem 1:
After putting a new hard drive in my old Macbook Pro, I did the first Time Machine backup a few days ago. Everything was fine until today, when I opened the Star Wars Display. I only have _one_ backup of my old hard drive along with about ten of my new hard drive. I have been using Time Machine for backing up to an external drive for over a year, so - where are all my old backups?
When I access the sparsebundle on my backup drive through Disk Utility, I get to Backups.backupdb > MyDriveName > about ten backup folders. The oldest being the same as I can see in the Star Wars Display.
I have checked the box in the Time Machine preferences which prompts Time Machine to tell me if older backups are being deleted. I have not gotten such a notification. So where are my old backups? Are they gone? If so, why? What did I do wrong? Why did Time Machine not warn me?
Problem 2:
I have an old backup on the same drive as mentioned above. It is not in the form of a sparsebundle but as a folder named Backups.backupdb. It has three years worth of backups. I have not been able to access them since I formatted my old hard drive a year ago and gave it a new name in the process. Since then, the backups have been placed in the above mentioned sparsebundle.
I am able to open the backup in the Star Wars Display by choosing this backup as an alternative drive holding down the option key when clicking on the Time Machine logo in the menu bar. But all directories are just empty shortcut folders - exactly as if I just open the folders in the backup folders in the Backups.backupdb folder. I hope that makes sense.
Is there any explanation for this? How can I access the folders, since they are not working in the Star Wars Display? Are the files gone?
Also, after I open the sparsebundle (from problem 1), it appears in Finder as a drive. Thus, I can access the sparsebundle as a regular folder. What will happen, if I move the Backups.backupdb folder to the sparsebundle? Can I try or will that just screw everyting up?
Bonus info:
In regards to space, my backup drive has 2 TB capacity. The sparsebundle has a size of 435 GB and the Backups.backupdb folder has a size of 53 GB. But when I check the info on the drive, only 58 GB of space is left. How does that make sense in any way?

Thank you!The backup drive is not directly connected, I backup via the network. As mentioned, I have two files/folders at the root of the hard drive: A sparsebundle and a Backups.backupdb folder. These are two different backups - the sparsebundle being the newest. I suspect that Backups.backupdb folder stems back to when I started to backup and I did connect the backup drive directly to the computer. Even though I later began to backup wirelessly, the backups continued to be saved in the folder. And then - as I tried to explain in the original post - I did a formatting of my Maca year ago, renaming and it and thus began a new backup which was being saved as a sparsebundle instead of as a Backups.backupdb folder.

When I attempt to backup using Time Machine, I get an error stating that there is not enough space on my external drive...that I should exlude files from the backup. I've never run into this problem before. In the past, when space became limited on my external backup drive, Time Machine would simply delete the oldest files and then proceed with the backup.
I've searched the forums and can't find any similar cases. Is there any adjustments I need to make somewhere? Any suggesstions or help would be appreciated.

I got a problem restoring from my time machine backups, what happened was, i reinstalled leopard thing the migration utility was the thing to use, so i went and reinstalled and did that but it wasn't what i wanted, so i looked it up and learnt it was restore i wanted.
So i went back, reformated my hard drive and clicked the restore choice from the drop down menu in the leopard boot dvd, it found the time machine hard drive, but when i click it, it doesn't find any backups, acts like there are none on there, but when i look in disk utility it still has all the used space from the backups.
So now i've reinstalled leopard and the harddrive is there and i can see the backups all sitting there, but when i go to restore it can't see them.
Does anyone know why? i really need to fix this because their are important files on the time machine and i needed my comp restored.
If anyone could help that'd be great!I'm having a problem restoring an Address Book card. If I have Finder up when I go to Time Machine it looks and acts as I'd expect. If I Address Book is my active window when I go to Time Machine, for some reason the only active option for a backup is "Now". It doesn't allow me to go to any previous backup. When I search for the card that was recently deleted, it doesn't appear. That seems consistent with the fact that Now is the only copy that seems available in Time Machine, but any ideas why I don't have access to earlier versions?

when i go inside time machine and search for 'abcd.xyz' for today & when i press back button it disappear although if i go in documents/x/ i find the same file lying there.

You might want to get Spotlight to re-index your TM drive. Via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy,+ exclude your TM drive for a few moments, then remove the exclusion. That should cause a complete re-indexing (which may, of course, take a while).
Problem 2: Navigation. If I enter time machine while in some folder, the current state of the folder is displayed in time machine. If I press on the 'back' arrow (lower right on the screen), instead of taking me to the screen with the last change, it just takes me to the last backup available. In Leopard it reacted different (taking me to the next screen that is different from the current one).
I rarely use the search function there, but don't recall it ever working that way in Leopard. -
Time Machine permissions problem!! Help!
I have important data on my time machines backup and yesterday did a full reinstall of OSX after backing all my old stuff up on the time machine drive.
Now time machine wont let me restore my data due to access privileges!!
In the permissions it shows that I have read and write permissions but doesn't show the administrators account in there. When I try to put admin account in it it won't let me.
I haven't used a different user name nor have I changed the name of the HDD partition. Any idea how to recover my data?skeoghman wrote:

Running OSX 10.5.7 all my time machine back-ups now say I don't have privileges. The only solutions offered elsewhere online seem to require an extraordinary amount of technical skill and knowledge, not to mention nerve.
Then you've been looking in the wrong places.
What are you trying to do when you get this error, and exactly what does it say?
Be advised that if you're trying to use the FInder to access your TM backups, that's likely the problem. TM uses special "deny everybody everything" privileges to keep us mere mortals from changing, moving, or deleting the backups, since that can hopelessly corrupt them.
The way to browse or restore from TM backups is via the +Enter Time Machine+ option (the "Star Wars" display).

New Time Machine/Mavarick Problem
Trying to do initial back-up of new iMac to 1st Generation Time Capsule. The TC has worked perfectly in backing up my old iMac running Lion. Used Set-up Assistrant to migrte files from old to new iMac,and everything came over nicely. All apps had been up-dated prior to migration and Disk Utility was used to be sure all permissions were correct and verifications perfect on the source (old) hard drve. I erased the Time Capsule using Airport Utility (which had also been fully updated). I used Time Machine on the new iMac to connect to the Time Capsule and let the initial back-up commence. The source hard drive contained 427 GB. The back-up seemed to proceed normally until about 405 GB of the 427 GB had been copied to the TC. At this point, as the number of GB copied increased, the total number of GB listed to be on the source drive also began to increase (whereas before it had held steady at 427 GB for the preceding several hours). This continued for about 15 minutes, with both the # GB copied and the # of GB on the source drive increasing. When the number of GB copied reached about 425GB (and the total said to be on the source drive reading ~460GB), the time remaining said zero minutes, and, shortly after that, the machine crashed, with an error message saying that the back-up had failed.
I went through five separate attempts with results similar to those described above. On three of the attempts, I erased the TC with Quick Erase and, with two attempts, I did a more thorough erase (all zeroes added). I tried hooking the iMac to the TC via ethernet cable and wirelessly, with the same result.
The iMac is running the i7 processor, has 32 GB of RAM and a 3TB hard drive. Just routine applications on the source drive.
Has anybody else experienced a problem similar to mine? Any clues as to the cause?
