NAS Volumes - LR 3.5 & 3.6

I have a seperate catalog for client related images that has recently changed the way it shows my NAS drive under Folders. It used to show up like this (but this image is from another catalog), i.e. the name of the volume on the NAS would show up with the green icon and info about available space.
But now it shows up like this, i.e. a link to the NAS drive but listed under my local drive and only available space info for my local drive.
Just upgraded from 3.5 to 3.6 but that made no difference
Has anyone seen this before?
-Ewen

This should do the trick:
Back up your catalog (for your own peace of mind!)
Work your way through each top level folder in turn (/, then Volumes, then... etc), right-clicking and choosing Promote Subfolders.
Keep doing that until all of the folders have disappeared from Lightroom's Folder panel.
Hold your nerve (this is why you backed up first!!!) and restart LR, and they will reappear as proper drives again.

  • Lr 3.4.1, moovies, and nas-volume

    a small bug-report:
i have a network storage for my pictures, and inside the are a few quicktime-moovies. Trying to import this network volume to Lightroom 3.4.1 showed me, that moovies cannot be imported. The pictures itself imported in a reasonable amount of time, but as soon as there are moovies inside the nas-volumes, it worked and worked and worked, overnight, the next day. No progress visible.
I created a new catalog, moved the moovies from nas to local hard disk, and imported the nas-volume again. Success, in a few hours all was imported.
Then i imported the moovies from local hard disk. Again success, worked fine within a few minutes. The last thing i had to do is to tell Lightroom the new (ahem, old) storage place for the moovies.
Is there any tricky workaround that can import moovies direct from a nas volume?
    Greetings from Gemany
    Christian Stüben

LR 3.4.1 may write keywords differently than previous versions due to fixing an error with corrupting metadata so there could be a bug particular to LR 3.4.1, but Adobe needs to be able to repeat it with a simple example in their facilities or hear enough reports of it that they feel there is an issue and they can find a problem with their code.  From what you've said (except the unexplained situation about how it didn't work to move the file from your USB to your C drive) everything points to your USB drive having an issue, though.
Adobe would likely want to do a remote troubleshooting session on your computer unless they've already diagnosed the issue on another computer.  You might try posting your issue on the more official "Feedback" forum that Adobe seems to look at more:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightro om
but be ready for the same skepticism and litany of questions that you've gotten here.
The intermittency is your biggest issue to getting anything resolved.  A reason for intermittency could be a timing problem where some other process like a virus-scanner, or a media-scanner, or some other thread in LR, itself, like the preview-generating thread, is accessing your image at the point that LR is trying to write the keywords to the image file, or the fact that the image is in disk cache or not, where a USB-drive would have less cache than an internal drive and access is generally much slower via USB than internal IDE or SATA drives.
As a way to see if it happens on more than just your particular USB drive, try everything on a memory-card in a card-reader to simulate a USB-drive.  If you can get that to work then there's a little more hope in someone else repeating it.  Be prepared to give a step-by-step procedure from virgin-JPG prior to import up until the error-message is received with specific keywords and keystrokes used to get the error.  Be prepared to provide an example JPG, too.

    Hi Tony,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Mounting more than 2 NAS volume on startup

I am trying to mount a bunch of NAS volumes on startup. Problem is I can only have 2 volumes mounted. Let's say I add Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3 as Login items for a user, when I restart I only get Volume 1 and Volume 2 mounted. If I check the login items prefs, I have Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 1 again (instead of Volume 3). I tried on different computers even with different OS (10.9). This is very annoying Any idea??

    Hi Toke Lahti;
With the additional information you just provided, all of the talk about RAID might have been a red herring in this case. If you will look here, you will notice that it might be the version of FCP you are using.
On the subject of your RAID, I still say that your configuration with partitions that are being used in RAID arrays is not the best solution. If it were my system I would seriously into changing the configuration so that you are not using partitions.

  • Permissions keep changing on a NAS volume?

I have an 8TB NAS with a few shares set up.  Randomly, a padlock appeared on the lower left corner of one of the shares' icon (my media share).  I can still access the share fine.  If I SSH into the NAS via Cyberduck, the permissions for the media share say "unknown".  I can change them to 777 recursively and the padlock disappears, for a few days, but eventually it comes back.  No one else has access to the share.  I don't get it.
    Any ideas?

That's doesn't sound like an issue with your Mac. What did the NAS vendor's tech support tell you?

  • ITunes Media on NAS: iTunes makes a terrible mess... tips?

    Hi all
I have transferred my iTunes Media (folder) to a NAS (currently Synology DS212+), and I'm having repeated troubles in using those media from the iMac.
iTunes simply makes a mess in the iTunes library, and in the files as well. If I let iTunes organize the files, I suddenly and randomly find podcasts in music albums, and music files within podcasts, files are randomly missing, because iTunes moves them to slighly awkward locations, and so forth. From my experience, it seems as if there is some relative addressing of files involved, which leads to havoc if the respective file paths change.
I'm really lost and need help here.
What are the best settings I have to use when having iTunes Media on the NAS?
Where should the respective iTunes files sit? Experimenting around, I found that the iTunes library needs to be in the iTunes standard folder (putting it to the NAS seemed to be impossible). Podcasts on the NAS seem to work somehow if the folder sits within the iTunes Media folder; but for Apps, this doesn't work - they apparently need to be in the iTunes standard folder. (I observed also that if the NAS isn't available temporarily (disks sleeping and waking up), iTunes just makes a new iTunes Media folder and reverts its settings to standard folders... awkward)
Does anyone have an idea on where all the iTunes folders must be best for iTunes?
And then, I tried to use beaTunes for un-messing, and help make order in the library... random results to say the least).
So what is the best setup to use iTunes, when data are supposed to be stored on a NAS?
    Thanks!!!!!!! Help very much appreciated.
    Simon

Apple doesn't have a problem with iTunes, it works if you dont interfere. iTunes manages its own data. They are your media files, but don't you try to manage them.
Setup your NAS volume as the iTune media library. My iTunes library is on a USB external 2TB HD. Then set "keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
When you add new media file to iTunes you drag them to iTunes Library (top of left column.)
Never touch the iTunes files or folders on the NAS volume. Never move, rename, add or delete files or folders.

  • How to prevent Time Machine from ejecting volume?

I just set up a Buffalo Cloustor NAS (which is working very nicely, thank you) and one of its features is that it plays nice with Time Machine backups.  I also recently took advantage of a MacUpdate promo on Back-In-Time.  BIT works fine as long as the NAS backup volume is mounted but for some reason Time Machine ejects that volume when it's finished its backups.  I've seen similar problems in threads of non-Lion version of OSX but they seemed to be troubles with USB or FW drives rather than an Ethernet NAS.  I'd rather keep the NAS volume mounted so I can use this 3rd party app.
Here is a copy of the console messages filtered on "time machine" for the relevant time period:

Is there a way of telling Time Machine to not eject when finished?  I'm comfortable writing stuff using Terminal if that's what it takes.

Yup, you're the 3rd or 4th to report it with various models of WDs (one fellow had 3 of them!), and a few weeks ago someone had some Iomegas, I think, too.
This confusion may well also explain some weird stats in Get Info I noticed last week (such as the drive apparently having used more bytes than its capacity, as I recall).
    Quite likely.
Thank you for your support. I shall come back and mark the thread resolved when I have reformatted the drive.
Cool. Also double-check the contents of the one you don't erase; you may find some extra stuff there.

  • Pc net top to host iTunes with library on a nas

I want to set up a pc to run an instance of iTunes so that we can use it as a shared home network.
We currently have three iPads, two iPad minis, two iPods, two iPhones and an apple tv.  We have one old family pc which runs iTunes when it is switched on.
We would like to set up a net top pc purely to host iTunes and allow the other iPads etc to view videos and music.  Our iTunes library is held on a western digital nas and backed up to a qnap nas (which is only switched on every now and then).
    Q. Is a net top man enough to do this? Do the files come through the net top or do they come direct from the nas?
    All suggestions welcome.
    Many thanks in advance.

My iTunes library, stored on a Synology NAS, is home shared to iPhones/iPads/AppleTV's by an always on Mac Mini.
Was kinda tricky in OS X getting iTunes not to start till the NAS volume had been mounted, but it's working well.
Not sure what you mean by a "net top", but the media will always come from where ever iTunes is running.

  • Backing up a network volume with Time Machine?

Is it possible to use Time Machine to make a backup of a NAS networked hard disk? (To be absolutely clear: the NAS volume is the source of the data to be saved, not the destination for TM.)

  • AME hangs, slow - watch folders on NAS

    Hi forum,
I love my AME CS6, when it works, but I've had anguish with some (possibly) related problems:
    1) verry sllow output of .mov file (NTSC SD, h264)
    2) constant hangs resulting from any interaction with the application (spending a lot of time looking at "Adobe Media Encoder (not responding)" at the top of the application window. These hangs usually don't cause a crash, but the waiting (usually 5-25 seconds) is agony, especially when a large batch of work is in queue. (The only time AME ever hangs on startup for me is when the mac is actually exporting into the watch folder, in which case the startup splash text says it is trying to load the file [which is at that moment incomplete] and so it sits there and hangs - this is probably not related to my core problem.)
    Some details about my system:
    1) AME (CS6) is hosted on a Win7 system on a Dell with Xeon quad 3.07Ghz, and Nvidia quadro 2000 grafx card, and 6Gb of RAM.
    2) I am using watch folders that reside on a NAS connected by a gigabit switch
    3) some files being contributed to the watch folders are coming from a Mac (usually 1080p prores 422) but most are coming from the local windows machine (some SD NTSC .AVI, some MPEG all-I - I generally queue finished shows to AME using the "same settings as sequence" checkbox from PrPro the file->export->media dialog
So my questions, based on my guesses as to what is going on:
    1) Is the Adobe Quicktime plugin/manager to blame? How can I know, and what could I do to troubleshoot?
(observation: watch folder A includes 2 h264 outputs - one is .mov and the other is .mp4. When processing a master file from premiere, the .mp4 rips fast and the .mov chuggs [ratio of export time : run time is ~0.3:1 for the .mp4 and  ~4:1 for the .mov - a huuuuge difference]. HOWEVER, when the file in process is a prores from the Mac [presumably need ing quicktime for all  operations] BOTH the .mp4 and the .mov are pathologically slow to encode)
    2) Is it possible that I need to modify some network setting/configuration? I am totally a noob at this skillset, and I work for a City Government where the IT guys dont really know how to give me what I need for the work I do - so can anyone suggest key words and concerns I can be asking about/checking on with regard to how I connect to my NAS and how their network policies might be affecting my traffic to those watch folders?
    3) Is it possible that there is some registry conflict on my Win7 system? I did briefly load a demo of AVID media composer, and someone told me that this can create problems due to registry entries associated with both applications - would I need to completely reimage/rebuild my dell or is there some way to reset these associations? Is there some way to trouble-shoot/eliminate this as a potential cause to my problem?
    Thanks in advance!

Well guys, I checked up on the hyperthreading on this system - it was already disabled. Following the instructions on the page Todd links to above I found that the highest number of processors available on that "limit to" list is 4 - far below the 21 it says is the threshhold for trouble with QT server. For today I have enabled hyperthreading and enable the limit of processors to 4. and I will see how she performs.
Another Adobe staff (Tariq from chat support) member has suggested that the problem may originate in the way my user profile is configured, and suggested I try running AME as ADMIN from my current profile. When I did, AME could not find/connect to the NAS volumes where my watch folders live, and I ran out of time to test this option using manually loaded (non-watch folder) .mov encodes.
Also, another observation: at one moment (before changing anything) I opened AME and opened one of my .mov presets to change a setting (to disable the scripted FTP, which is also malfunctioning) and on OK-ing out of that dialog, AME froze and did not recover. I forced a quit, then reopened AME, and I discovered that just accessing that preset causes a permanent freeze every time - I don't have to change any settings in order to reproduce the fail (NOTE: despite the immediate fail, AME remembered the setting change). This speaks to Mitch's last statement above ("If the hanging is happening when exporting as H.264 compressed .MOV files...") - well, yes and no: The hang/freeze usually happens anytime I am manipulating the queue (adding/removing/reordering) or changing presets, whether I am encoding or not, and seems worse when there are .mov settings involved. My intuition is telling me that something is not working right in the way that AME interacts with those .xmp files it uses in the watch folders to track files in process.
At any rate, I appreciate your time and consideration of my problem. I will be grinding along with the current issues unresolved, as I have deadlines looming, and I will update this thread as new information emerges. Let me just say, however, that despite these issues, CS6 still seems to be best in class and best value for me and my operation.

As far as I can see, the only errors I saw were:

    Dec 3 13:28:31 cc-orcl-ld2 kernel: SCSI error : <0 0 0 2> return code

    1. check if first line printed above are related to the second and third lines:
use the shell command: cat /proc/scsi/scsi
    2. the second and third line are SCSI error messages. This means the SCSI controller received a message from the device about an error.

  • Ls doesn't show permissions

OSX 10.6.8 client and 10.6.7 server; server has direct-attached storage and serves as a NAS head. We're using local users, not Open Directory.
I've been looking at files on my local drive, as well as the NAS volume, and I can't see any ACLs anywhere. The server definitely has ACLs enabled on those folders.
    1. ls -l shows all files are owned by me and staff, regardless of who created the files. Does the server make it look like you're the POSIX owner whenever the ACL grants you access?
    2. I could never get ls -le or ls -e to show any ACL information.
What (basic stuff) am I missing here?

Are there ACLs present in what you're looking at?  Add an ACL onto a scratch file somewhere as a test, and see if it shows up with the commands you're using.
As for ls commands, a typical local command is this one:
    ls -ale@
That particular syntax also shows the attributes on a file.
Some reading on chmod and ACLs from the man pages.

  • Permissions and keychains after mavericks

    Hello all
Since upgrading to Mavericks I've had some odd issues going on involving permissions and keychains. On each of my iMacs, I've actually had to go in and change the permissions on the keychain folder to allow my user profile to access it, and on one of them I am still having an issue of having to enter some passwords from memory rather than having them auto-fill. Also, many folders' info panels list their permissions as "custom access" but don't present the padlock-and-userlist thing for editing permissions. It happened that last week I was unable to move a file from an external NAS volume because (even though I was logged in and normally have admin privileges on the volume in question) Mavs said I didn't have permission to read the file, and would not let me access the permissions panel in show-info. The file was video, and I could play it, but was not allowed to move or copy it.
    Weird.
If there is some obvious measure I should take or some useful tool I should know about, please let me know
    Thanks!!

    Permission Issues - Troubleshooting
You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Mail crashes when saving attachments

Had this since Snow Leopard. When I get a mail with an attachment and select save it crashes instantly. I can drag the attachment off the email - ie to the desktop, but it's annoying when I forget I have something that doesn't do what it's supposed to and I have to fire up Mail again.
I've sent countless bug reports to Apple - do they go straight in the bin? Anyway - hope someone has a fix. Here's the error report thing.

In my situation I know it is caused by having one or more volumes on my Synology NAS mounted on the desktop. Most of the time a 'Save As' or 'Open' dialog will result in an almost instant application crash. When I unmount all NAS volumes the problem is gone.
This started in 10.6, was solved in my case after one of the minor updates (10.6.3 or 10.6.4) but unfortunately, since I had to restore my system from a Time Machinebackup, the problems started again. A combo 10.6.4 update hasn't helped either. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem (search for TFSVolumeInfo or GetSyncGCDQueue).
Hopefully you can pinpoint your device that is the culprit. Although not solving the issue, you may at least be able to control it.
    regards,
    Erik

  • Exchange 2013 Virtual

    Hello all,
We are going to deploy Exchange 2013 on virtual Infra with Hyprer-v
I need to know when we place the Exchange VMs, where should i put ? Can we keep it as like VHD files or any other option ?
we have 2000 users with UM.
    regards

    Hi,
Block level storage is a storage type that presents itself to servers using industry standard Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity mechanisms.
For more information, you can refer to the following article:
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/the-enterprise-cloud/block-level-storage-vs-file-level-storage-a-comparison/3766/#.

As far as I know, all storage used by an Exchange guest machine for storage of Exchange data must be block-level storage because Exchange 2013 doesn't support the use of network attached storage (NAS) volumes, other than in the SMB 3.0 scenario outlined
later in this topic. Also, NAS storage that's presented to the guest as block-level storage via the hypervisor isn't supported:
