NAS - wakeonlan?

I've got a NAS that stays off. My PCs can wake it up automatically on boot-up with a utility. My linux box can wake it up by manually sending a wakeonlan command.
Does anyone know if something like wakeonlan or an automatic utility exists for iPad?
My particular NAS is a Buffalo Linkstation EZ LS-CL, Model# LS-C500L-US; but, I suppose the answer to this question could benefit anyone with most NAS drives.

Have you thought about using a linux distro as a File server? I am thinking of giving FreeNAS (www.freenas.org) a shot. I have not seen any official Mac support, but I don't see why it would not work.
The only thing needed for this is an old PC laying around. Cost would be minimal for the equipment (HD's, maybe a RAID card) and could be dev tested if you just had old hardware.
I am going to try this in the next few weeks. I will post my results when I get a chance.
I completely understand the need for a good backup solution across multiple platforms. I am really suprised that this it not more info out there about NAS servers.

  • Ripping tracks from a CD do not show up on my NAS drive

I have an IOMEGA IX200 1TB NAS for backup and an IOMEGA 1TB Media Player that I have transferred my Itunes library to for storage and playing music. I have checked the setting to move all imported songs to the Itunes library located on my IOMEGA Media player that is attached to my home network. Purchased songs from Itunes store will be inserted into the NAS Media drive, but I rip songs from a CD, they will not be placed there, I can't find them anyplace. My IOMEGA IX200 NAS drive that i use for backups is lasted as 'shared' on my Itunes window, but
my IOMEGA Media NAS drive is not. Should the Media player be listed as shared?
Why do Itunes bought songs get placed in the proper place but not CD ripped songs? Has anyone else had success transferring all the Itunes music to an external storage drive on their home network?

Can you see the CD ripped songs in iTunes itself? Can you then right-click and select "Show in Windows Explorer"?

  • I want a new and more powerful (non-Apple) wireless router but I still want to use my existing Time Capsule to continue with my Time Machine backups and I still need the Time Capsule's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features and capabilities

    THE SHORTER STORY
My goal is to successfully use my existing Time Capsule (TC) with a new and more powerful wireless router. I need a new and more powerful wireless router in order to reach a distant Denon a/v receiver that is physically located in a master bedroom some 50 feet away from my modem. I need to provide this Denon a/v receiver with an Internet connection so that it can obtain its firmware updates and I need to connect this Denon a/v receiver to my network in order to use its AirPlay feature. I believe l still need the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features because I am not sure if the new wireless router will provide me with the NAS like features / capabilities I need to share files between my two Apple laptops with OS X 10.8.2. And I know that I absolutely need my TC's seamless integration with Apple's Time Machine (TM) application in order to continue to make effortless backups of my two Apple laptops. To my knowledge nothing works with TM like Apple's TC. I also need the hard disk storage space built into the TC.
I cannot use a long wired Ethernet cable connection in this apartment and I cannot use power-line adapters. I have read that wireless range extenders and repeaters are difficult to successfully set-up and that they will reduce data speeds, especially so when incorrectly set-up. I cannot relocate my modem and/or primary base station wireless router.
In short, I want to use my TC with my new and more powerful wireless router. I need to stop using the TC to connect to the modem. However, I still need the TC for seamless TM backups. I also need to use the TC's built in hard drive for storage. And I may still need the TC's NAS capabilities to share files wirelessly between laptops because I am assuming the new wireless router will not provide NAS capabilities for OS X 10.8.2 (products like this/non-Apple products rarely seem to work with OS X 10.8.2/Macs to provide NAS features and capabilities). Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone please advise on how to set-up my new Asus wireless router with my existing TC in such a way to accomplish all of this?
What is the best configuration or set-up to accomplish my above goals?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!
    THE FULL STORY
I live in an apartment building where my existing Time Capsule (TC) is located in my living room and serves many purposes. Specially, my TC is at least all of the following:
    (1) Wi-Fi router connected to Comcast Internet service via Motorola SB6121 cable modem - currently the TC is the Wi-Fi base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet. The TC now provides the DHCP service for the Wi-Fi network.
    (2) Wireless router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to several Wi-Fi clients - two Apple laptop computers, an iPod touch, an iPad and an iPhone all connect wirelessly to the Internet via the TC.
    (3) Wired Ethernet router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to three different devices - a Panasonic TV, LG Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV each use one of the three LAN ports on the back of the TC to gain access to the Internet.
    (4) Primary base station in my attempt to extend my wireless network to a distant (located far away) Denon a/v receiver requiring a wired Ethernet connection - In addition to the TC, which is my primary base station, I am also using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. I cannot use a wired Ethernet connection to continuously travel from the living room to the master bedroom. The distance is too great as I cannot effectively hide the Ethernet cable in this apartment.
    (5) Time Machine (TM) backup facilitator - I use my TC to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops using Apple's Time Machine (TM) application. However, I ran out of storage space on my TC and therefore added external storage to it. Specifically, I added an external hard drive to my TC via the USB port on the back of the TC. I now use this added external hard drive connected to the TC via USB as the destination storage drive for my TM back-ups. I have partitioned the added external hard drive, and each of the several partitions all have enough storage space (e.g., each of the two partitions used by TM are sized at three times the hard drive space of each laptop, etc.). Everything works flawlessly.
    (6) Network Attached Storage (NAS) - In addition to using the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) capabilities to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops via TM, I also store other additional files on both (A) the hard drive built into the TC and (B) the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB (there are additional separate partitions on this drive for these other additional and non-TM backup files).
I use the TC's NAS feature with my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Again, everything works wirelessly and flawlessly. (Note: the Apple TV is connected to the network via Ethernet and a LAN port on the back of the TC).
The issue I am having is when I try to listen to music via Apple's AirPlay in the master bedroom. This master bedroom is located at a distance of two rooms away from the TC's current location in the living room, which is a distance of about 50 feet. This apartment has a long rectangular floor plan where each room is connected to the next in a straight line. In order to use AirPlay in the master bedroom I am using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. This additional base station connects wirelessly to the WiFi network provided by my TC and then gives my Denon receiver the wired Ethernet connection it needs to use AirPlay. I have tried moving my iTunes music directly onto my laptop's hard drive, and then I used AirPlay on this same laptop to connect to the Denon receiver. I always get a successful connection and the song plays, but the problem is that the connection inevitably drops.
I live in an apartment building and all of the many wireless routers in this building create a great deal of WiFi interference on both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands. I have tried connecting the Netgear product to each the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but neither band can successfully maintain a wireless connection between the TC and the Netgear product. I also attempted to maintain a wireless connection to an iPod touch using the 2.4 GHz band and AirPlay on this iPod touch to play music on the Denon receiver. Again, I was able to establish a connection and successfully play music, but after a few minutes the connection dropped and the music stopped playing. I therefore have concluded that I have a poor wireless connection in the master bedroom. I can establish a connection, but it is intermittent with frequent drops. I have verified this with both laptops by working in the master bedroom for an entire day on both laptops. The Internet connection in this master bedroom proved to drop out frequently - about once an hour with the laptops. The wireless connection and the frequency of its dropout are far worse with the iPod touch and an iPhone.
I cannot relocate the TC. Also, this is an apartment and I therefore cannot extend the range of my network with Ethernet cable (I cannot drill through walls/ceilings, etc.). It is an old building with antiquated wiring and power-line adapters are not likely to function properly, nor can I spare the direct power outlet required with a power-line adapter. I simply need every outlet I can get and cannot afford to block any direct outlet.
My solution is to use a more powerful wireless router. I found the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router which will likely provide a better connection to my wireless Internet in the master bedroom than the TC. The 802.11ac band of this Asus wireless router is totally useless to me, but based on what I have read I believe this router will provide a stronger connection at greater distances then my TC. And I will be ready for 802.11ac when it becomes more widely available.
However, I still need to maintain the TC's ability to work seamlessly with TM to backup my two laptops. Also, I doubt the new Asus router will provide OS X 10.8.2 with NAS like features and capabilities. Therefore, I still would like to use the TC's NAS capabilities to share files on my network wirelessly assuming the Asus wireless router fails to provide this feature. I need a new and more powerful wireless router, but I need to maintain the TC's NAS features and seamless integration with TM. Can someone advise on how to set-up my existing TC with this new Asus wireless router in such a way to accomplish all of this?

In regards to a Plan B, I hear ya brother. I am already on what feels like Plan Z. Getting WiFi to a far off room in an apartment building crowded with WiFi routers is a major pain.
I am basing my thoughts on the potential of a new and more powerful router reaching the far off master bedroom based on positive reviews on cnet.com, pcmag.com and pcworld.com. All 3 of these web sites have reviewed the Asus RT-AC66U 802.11AC wireless router as well as its virtual twin cousin 802.11n router. What impressed me is that all 3 sites rated this router #1 overall in terms of both range and speed (in both the 802.11n and 802.11AC flavors). They tested the router in real world scenarios where the router needed to compete with a lot of other wireless routers. One of the sites even buried this Asus router in a media room with thick walls and inside a media cabinet. This Asus router should be able to serve my 2.4 GHz band wireless clients (iPod Touch and iPhone 4) with a 2.4GHz Wireless-N band offering some 50 feet of dependable range and a 60 Mbps throughput at that range. I am hoping that works, but it's borderline for my master bedroom. My 5 GHz wireless clients (laptops) will enjoy a 5GHz Wireless-N band offering 150 feet of range and a 200 Mbps throughput at that range. I have no idea what most of that stuff means, but I did also read that Asus could reach 300 feet and I got really excited. My mileage may vary of course and I'm sure I'm making some mistakes in my interpretation of their data. However, my Winter 2009 Time Capsule was rated by cnet.com to deliver real world performance of less than that, and 802.11AC may or may not be useful to me someday. But when this Asus arrives and provides anything other than an excellent and consistent wireless signal without drops in the master bedroom it's going right back!
Your solution sounds great, but I have some questions. I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and Airport Utility (version 6.1 610.31) and on its third tab labeled "Wireless" the top option enables you to set "Network Mode" to either:
    Create a wireless network
    Extend a wireless network
    Off
Given your advice to "Turn off the wireless on the TC," should I set Network Mode to Off? Sorry, I'm clueless in regards to how to turn off the wireless on the TC any other way. Can you provide specific steps on how to turn off the wireless on the TC? If what I wrote is correct then what should the rest of this Wireless tab look like, or perhaps it is irrelevant when wireless is off?
Next, what do you mean by "Configure the TC in Bridge Mode?" Under Airports Utility's fourth tab labeled "Network" the top option "Router Mode" allows for either:
    DHCP and Nat
    DHCP Only
    Off (Bridge Mode)
Is your advice to Configure the TC in Bridge Mode as simple as setting Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)? If yes, then what should the rest of this "Network" tab look like? Anything else involved in configuring the TC in Bridge Mode or is it really as simple as setting the Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
How about the other tabs in Airport Utility, can they all stay as is assuming I use the same network name and password for the new Asus wireless router? Or do I need to make any other changes to the TC via Airport Utility?
Finally, in regards to your Plan B suggestion. I agree. But do you have a Plan B for me? I would greatly appreciate any alternative you could provide. Specifically, if you needed a TC's Internet connection to reach a far off corner of your home how would you do it? In the master bedroom I need both a wired Ethernet connection for the Denon a/v receiver and wireless Internet connection for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Power-Line Adapters - High Cost, Blocks at Least One Wall Outlet and Does Not Solve the Wireless Need
I actually like exactly one power-line adapter, which is the D-Link DHP-540 PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch. This D-Link power-line adapter plugs into your wall outlet with a normal sized plug (regular standard power cord much like any other electronic device) instead of all of the other recommended power-line adapters that not only use at least one wall outlet but also often block the second outlet. You cannot use a power strip with a power-line adapter which is very impractical for me. And everything about my home is strange and upside down. The wiring here is a disaster and I don't have faith in its ability to carry Internet access from the living room to the master bedroom. And this D-Link power-line adapter costs $90 each and I need at least two to make the connection to the Denon A/V receiver. So, $180 on this solution and I still don't have a dependable drop free wireless connection in the master bedroom. The Denon might get its Ethernet Internet connection from the power-line adapter, but if I want to use an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to stream AirPlay music to the Denon wirelessly (Pandora/iTunes, etc.) from the master bedroom the wireless connection will not be stable in there and I've already spent $190 on just the two power-line adapters needed.
Extenders / Repeaters / Wirelessly Extending the Wireless Network
I have also read great things about the Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Range Extender (Repeater) SR20000G and the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender. The former is very powerful and the latter is easier to install. Both cost about $150 ish so similar to a new Asus router. However, everything I read about Range Extenders points to them not being very effective for a far off corner of your house wherein it's apparently hard to place the range extender in the sweet spot where it both gets a strong enough signal to actually effectively extend the wireless signal and otherwise does not reduce network throughput speeds to unacceptable speeds.
Creating a Roaming Network By Hard Wiring with Ethernet Cable - Wife Would Say, "**** No!"
Even Apple seems to warn against wirelessly extending your network (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145#) and otherwise strongly recommends a roaming network where Ethernet cable is used to connect two wireless base stations. However, I am in an apartment where stringing together two wireless base stations with Ethernet cable would have an extremely low wife acceptance factor (WAF). I cannot (both contractually and from a skill prospective) hide Ethernet wire in the walls or ceiling. And having visible Ethernet cable running from room-to-room would be unacceptable, especially to the wife.
So what is left? Do you have a Plan B for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • ITunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users - how?

iTunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users?
I am very confused on what is the best way to handle this setup for my friends family.  Any help would be appreciated.  Sorry in advance as I know this is a long winded post - I have a feeling this will help others faced with the same issues or questions.
    CURRENT SETUP
I have three new Windows 7 machines networked (two desktops and one laptop) that have four users on each - as busy family with children who need the computers for homework, projects, games, etc...  The goal of this setup is that any user can log onto any computer and have there documents available to them no matter computer was free to use.  I set this up using the library function in Windows 7 and seems to work pretty well.
I have put a Buffalo Linkstation NAS on the system as well.  This was going to serve two purposes 1)  run some backup software to protect the computers and 2) consolidate the iTunes content in one place for all users.  There is also an iPad in the home that I should would be better served by accessing the content on the NAS without requiring any of the computers being on.  Dave is thinking about getting some other playback devices like Apple TV so thought a NAS would be a good way to go.
CURRENT ITUNES SETUP - I have created a new iTunes library on the NAS by holding the SHIFT button down while starting iTunes and pointed to that folder on a Share on the NAS.  There was no music on the system at the time as we are planning to copy this over from an OLD machine that is now not being used.  I have also authorized all the computers and turned on the home sharing feature (although I am not sure what good that does).
This “shift” button trick seesm to also point the default directory there without point to it in the advanced setup tab of iTunes.
I then synced one of the iPods with purchased content on it and synced that to the library after asking me to do so before an update.  All the content showed up in the library and was playable - awesome.
I then logged into each user on each machine (yikes) and installed iTunes  and used the “shift” trick to connect each users iTunes to the database on the NAS.  Everything seems to work - but I have not tested it thoroughly.
    SUMMARY
3 new Windwos 7 networked machines
4 identical users on each machine
    1 TB Buffalo linkstation
iTunes setup with the folder on a SHARE
all user’s itunes connected to the iTunes folder on the NAS
all computers authorized with home sharing turned on.
one iTunes user account signed in on each machine
multiple iPods and one iPad in the system
    QUESTIONS/CONCERNS
Is there a better way to do this on a NAS?
Would home sharing be better in some way?
I understand the NAS should show up under the shared section in iTunes - I assume that would mean that would mean each user has an iTunes library on their documents?
I have read that there may be corruption issues if users on the different machines try to access iTunes at the same time.
Will there be any issues syncing that various iPods with?
Ugh - sorry for the long post and all the questions.  I am just trying to find the best way to do this.  I wish Apple would put out a best practices document for setups like this.  Thanks in advance.

This is a user to user support forum. Your fellow users can offer solutions or workarounds based on their experience with the application. If you think it should work differently drop a line to iTunes Feedback.
For reasons unknown Apple haven't chosen to allow iTunes to be suspended in one profile and active in another. My recollection is that this applies even if each profile has a different library, although it is some time since I've committed a personal test.
I'm not sure why my suggestion make less sense that your current approach?. As I understand it currently everybody is either signed into their own account when they can do something other than work with iTunes, or they sign into the special iTunes account where they can't access any of their other stuff. You don't have to disable fast user switching. Follow exactly the same steps, but make sure everyone closes iTunes before turning the computer over to another user. Disabling fast user switching helps to enforce that action.

  • After using "consolidate library" to move my media to a NAS the items counts do not match.  How do I find what is different the easiest way??

I wanted to move my itunes media on my imac to a NAS drive.  I used the advance preferences to change the folder to the folder on the NAS.  I then went to the "organize library" setting to consolidate.
When I compare the two folders, the music folders are different (807 items in the old to 798 items in the new), mobile applications are different (143 in the old to 153 in the new), Movies are different (321 items in the old, 324 in the new).
I think I already had the entire folder organized the way itunes wanted it.  I'm not sure why the count would increase or to easily make sure I'm not missing any info.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Actually, a little off on the situation as I originally described.
Compared the old items counts to the new item counts:
    1. The music folder increased in item counts.
    2.  Books is identical.
    3.  Mobile apps decreased by 10 on the new.
    4.  Movies decreased by 3.

  • Purchased TV and Movie artwork not showing in iTunes 10.6.1 when stored on a NAS drive

    Hi All
Having searched through the forums here and using Google to cast a wider net.
I am still struggling to see if there is a solution to the missing artwork of TV programmes or films missing when stored on a NAS drive.  All the TV programmes and movies have been purchased through the iTunes store.
The version of iTunes being used is the most recent (10.6.1).
The network drive is hardwired linked to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, this base station is also hardwire linked to the iMac.  The iTunes library resides upon a DROBO FS and has done since it filled the storage capabilities of the iMac.
TV and Films purchased before the migration of the library has the artwork, it is just films and programmes purchased since the migration that don't.
Clicking "Get Album Artwork" has no effect, the same is also true for manually adding the artwork to each episode through the "Get Info" "Artwork" option.  Although the "Get Info" route teases you with an apparent result only to have the artwork "vanish" when you save.
I have seen a solution that involves remapping the iTunes library to the iMac each time you want to download a TV programme or film and then remounting the NAS drive and consolidating the library again, http://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/fix-missing-album-art-when-using-a-nas- with-itunes/
This doesn't strike me as much of a solution and doesn't address the TV programmes and films that have already been downloaded.
I am hoping someone in the community is aware of a solution or at least method that is a little more elegant than the one linked to above.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

The Apple TV 1 doesn't use homesharing.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • Corrupted Time Machine Backup on NAS

I'm just going to explain the steps leading to my problem so it's clear:
    1. I created an encrypted sparsebundle disk image for backing up to a NAS at my workplace.
    2. The time machine was working fine for a couple of months until my Macbook started shutting down randomly.
2a. This would always happen with CPU heating up to 94 degrees C and fan cranking up to 6400+ rpm. So I thought it was an issue with the heatsink.
    3. I decided to do one final TM backup before giving it for service. I tried a number of times to backup to NAS but everytime the machine would just shut down in between leading to "unsuccessful backup".
3a. The CPU would still heat up during the backup but I was really desperate to do that one backup before giving it for service. So I tried doing the backup in a cold room (thinking it was just an overheating issue)!! The room temperature was close to 10 degrees C in the cold room and CPU temperature never rose abouve 60 degrees C. But the machine still shut down. (At this point I was sure this is some other issue and not just the heatsink! But the service engineer said they just 'reapplied the thermal paste for better heat dissipation'). This solved the random shutdowns but I don't understand how. Anyway that's probably for another discussion).
    4. I did another TM backup on an external USB hard drive and gave the machine for service.
    5. I got back the Macbook and I tried to revive the old backups from NAS and probably merge with the latest one on external drive.
    6. I tried to mount the sparsebundle image and kept getting the "no mountable file system" error.
6a. I'm not sure if the multiple unsuccessful backups corrupted the disk image somehow (although I don't understand why it would).
    7. Then I tried to repair the disk image with Disk Utility but got the error "Disk Utility cannot repair this disk. Backup the disk () and restore files". I tried this multiple times and got the same error with almost the same scan time.
    8. I tried to repair with Disk Warrior and it said Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failue (-36, 2747).
8a. It's a disk image on a network drive so I don't get why Disk Warrior says it's a hardware failure!
    9. I tried a sudo fsck and got this:
    9a. XXXXs-MacBook-Air:~ YYYY$ sudo hdiutil attach ...... -nomount
    /dev/disk1                    Apple_partition_scheme
    /dev/disk1s1                  Apple_partition_map
    /dev/disk1s2                  Apple_HFS
    XXXXs-MacBook-Air:~ YYYY$ sudo fsck_hfs -f /dev/disk1s2
    ** /dev/rdisk1s2
       Executing fsck_hfs (version hfs-226.1.1).
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
       The volume name is Backup1
    ** Checking extents overflow file.
    ** Checking catalog file.
    ** Checking multi-linked files.
Incorrect number of file hard links
    ** Checking catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking extended attributes file.
** The volume Backup1 could not be verified completely.
9b. Disk Utility also gives the same file hard links error when I try to repair.
    10. I'm still not able to mount the disk from sparsebundle image. But when I attach the image, the partition shows up in Disk Utility sidebar and is greyed out.
I think this is just some software issue with corrupted links or the like and not a hardware failure of the NAS.
I had a few thoughts to solve this:
    a. Is this an encryption issue? Is there a way to decrypt the sparebundle image with a third party software? I know the encryption password.
(Lesson learnt. Never encrypt the backup unless you really need to).
    b. Could it be an issue with the plist.info file or something? Maybe a modification to the file would fix this?
I'm not sure how to do this and I don't want to try any more things and risk losing the data. The size of the disk image is the same as before so I think all the data is still there. It's a few months worth of TM backup so I would really like to restore it.
I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks!

    Extremely unlikely.
It is possible to use Back to my Mac to back up to a Time Capsule over the Internet, but many folks can't get it to work; even when it does, it's very slow.
I've never seen any posts about it being done to any other Internet destination.

  • ITunes media on a NAS, libraries locally?

    Hello, all,
I've been browsing search results on hosting iTunes on a NAS, and I had a couple of questions and perhaps someone has some wisdom to share.
My girlfriend and I have separate iTunes libraries that we would like to combine. We are each on an iMac: hers is running Snow Leopard, mine is running Lion; each of our computers is authorized to play each others' music as far as older FairPlay DRM goes. She and her kids sync their iPods on her machine; they each have intricate playlist structures that I think have evolved into sentient life forms. I sync mine on my machine. We each have our own iTunes/iCloud accounts, and each have our own sets of iPhone apps.
We are attempting to migrate her user account over to my iMac, as a way of load-balancing the available computer time, as it were. So now the question is how to keep all the media updated between the two machines; it would appear that the best way to do this would be to merge the two libraries. I currently keep my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on an (old, and getting older) external firewire (400) hard disk. We both need to update our storage, and so I'm considering two different approaches:
    (1) NAS. Have a partition for Time Machine, a partition for a combined iTunes library, and a partition for file sharing.
    (2) New, larger Firewire 800 hard drive, combine our libraries. This wouldn't be accessible, though, from both machines.
So some questions about option (1):
--I understand that if I copy the entire iTunes library and media to the NAS, that that can bring everything to a crawl. I currently have mine on my external drive, and all user accounts on my machine have access to it and use the same library. I get the feeling that if I utilize the same tactic here, that everything will operate very slowly.
I've read that if I copy just the iTunes media library to the NAS but keep the actual library files on each local machine (and, I guess, user account), that not only would that speed things up but would also enable each user to have their own library, with their own playlists and their own play counts etc. But how would that work if User 1 purchased a new song or app? Would that new media only be added to User 1's library? Or would it become available to every library (I would prefer the latter)? How can this be made to happen?
--Songs are easy enough, but what about apps? If an app is purchased by User 1, using Account 1, and iPhone 1 is linked to Account 1...that part's easy. But what about User 2? Does User 2, using Account 2 on iPhone 2 also have access to that app? I'm not interested so that I can avoid paying twice, that's not the issue: but if all the apps are stored on the same library but are purchased from two different sources, then how would we/should we keep them separate as far as syncing with our iPhones?
And a question about option (2):
--So let's say I just bring my girlfriend over to my iMac, and do something similar to what I have now: a shared iTunes library on a new external drive, with all users on my machine using the same library. Her user account still is tied to her iTunes account while my user account is tied to my iTunes account: each of us can purchase music, and each piece of purchased music drops into the exact same library. How, then, to keep that library in sync with the library on the other machine?
Here is my idea, and would like feedback: if she makes all her purchases (songs and apps both) on her machine rather than on  mine, then using iCloud should not all those purchases (again, songs and apps both) also download to my machine as well?
Thanks for any help you can give!

    HI
Read this user tip Make and keep a backup of your iTunes library, and only stream from the cloud.
Problems? No hidden catches. Whilst streaming using match, you will need a wifi connection. You main worry is that if your NAS drives fails, you need to redownload your music from match but this could take time depending on how large your collection is. Personally I keep an additional backup of all my music as a matter of course.

  • ITunes, Apple TV, a NAS drive and Time Capsule - an idiot's guide

    Hi,
I really need some help, and even though I know the information is already on the web, I just need someone to tell me what to do in my circumstance.
I have a new Macbook with 250GB hard drive which is now almost full! I have an Apple TV box which is also almost full. I have a 320GB Iomega NAS which is not almost full as I haven't really used it properly and I have just got a 1TB Time Capsule as I'm petrified of losing everything!
I have just over 175GB of music and films/tv programmes. I have also just finished making sure all the album artwork is correct (I know - very sad!).
Currently the entire library is on my Macbook. I backed it up to the NAS drive (although I did it via a USB connection rather than over my home network).
With only about 23GB of space left on my Macbook I decided the time was right to use the NAS properly. (I only really want to use the Time Capsule as a back up, although I guess there is probably a problem there as well if I move everything of importance (i.e. the music and films) to the NAS but lets leave that one for the time being.
Basically what I want to know is how to use itunes with the NAS so that the music and films etc are stored on the NAS but not the rest of the information (the itunes database and album art folders).
I tried it before and it kind of worked but the first time it update the library file and having just sorted out all the album artwork I don't want to have to do it again.
I should say that I am the only one in the house who uses itunes, my laptop, am the only one with an ipod and iphone, so there is no issue with someone sharing the library or anything like that.
So, question 1 - how do I set up itunes to work with the NAS.
Question 2 - in doing so, will I have to correct all the artwork again?
Question 3 - if all the music etc is on the NAS, how do I back it up to the Time Capsule?
A more complicated question is can I keep the music on my laptop and films/tv programmes on the NAS?
Will all of this make the Apple TV box stop working?
Finally, I have already found an apple script which automounts the NAS and then starts itunes as I have read that that can cause a problem.
    Thanks for any/all your help.
    Anthony

There isn't a solution, the Apple TV will only read your iTunes library if iTunes is running and will only play content through iTunes.

  • External Ethernet/NAS Hard Drive with Time Machine

    Hi,
I'm going to be purchasing a Mac Book Pro once leopard is launched and I'm wanting to get an external hard drive to back up using Time Machine. Now, I'm wanting to set this up through a wireless router so that a can make my backups without having to remember to connect every so often.
Does anybody know if Time Machine works via NAS/Ethernet as the Tech Spec of Time Machine just mentions USB and Firewire? I presume it will work, as it would seem a little daft if it doesn't.
Following on from that, does anybody have any recommendations for external NAS/ethernet hard drives? I was wanting something from 250GB to 500GB. I have seen this one -
    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4J9D&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=ext ernalhard+driveethernet&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=50473
    And this one -
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128482
Any help is very much appreciated!

Yes, networked drives, servers, etc., will work as a Time Machine target -- all it needs is a folder it can write to. I'll leave the drive recommendation to someone else.

  • Mac mini can not find the NAS

In my network I have a Mac mini, AirPort Extreme base station and a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo v2. Everything is connected by cable. The problem is that the Mac mini can not find the NAS. Mac mini is looking for wirelessly connected devices, type TimeCapsule. How do I get my Mac mini to find the NAS and set the NAS as a source of data storage?

I have a ReadyNAS and use it as a Time Machine destination with no problems, even over WiFi. The ReadyNAS and Mac are both on the same LAN (even though the Mac is on WiFi), please check to see if your WiFi is on a different LAN to the Ethernet side of things, I have my Airport set to bridging mode so both sides of the AirPort count as the same LAN.
Next you need to check you have actually configured Time Machine in the ReadyNAS, as shipped it is initially turned off. You need to go to the ReadyNAS web management interface (FrontView) and then click on Backup on the left, and then select Time Machine. You also need to make sure Bonjour is enabled for the ReadyNAS, this is accessed by clicking on Services on the left and then selecting Discovery Services, make sure all the Bonjour options are ticked on.

  • Unable to Stream Video on Demand files from NAS on latest version of AMS 5.0.3

    Hi,
I was hoping that someone could assist me.
Our organisation has recently purchased Adobe Media Server Standard to deploy to two Windows 2008 R2 servers (core edition) to stream flash content (video on demand only) which is resident on NAS storage.
I have considerable difficultly in streaming content from NAS and from the literature I have read and the configuration I have done it should be possible.
The steps I have taken to attempt to get this to work are as follows:
    Installation
    - Installed AMS 5.0.1 on both servers using the default TCP ports and Apache was not installed as part of the install
    - Both AMS instances upgraded to the latest release AMS 5.0.3
    - Windows Firewall on the servers disabled (we use hardware firewalls) and TCP connectivity verified by using telnet to connect these servers on 1935 and 80
    Initial Configuration
    - As we only will be using video on demand I removed the live, livepkgr and multicast applications from the /applications folder. Vod is the only application remaining
    - Using the videoplayer in the /samples/videoplayer we were successfully able to view the sample streams
    Configuration to stream from NAS
    - I modified the VOD_DIR in the ams.ini file in the /conf folder to reflect the NAS location (\\{nas FQDN\sharename}
    - Our NAS share has NTFS permissions applied and our AMS servers are joined to Active Directory. I created an AD account that had membership of the group that had read rights to the NAS share.
    - I then reconfigured the AMS windows service to Log on with the AD account (as per the install guide: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/adobemediaserver/configadmin/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d119f2925 e64-7fc7.2.3.html)
    Issues Experienced
    - Whenever I change the AMS windows service to use an AD user (and not the Local System account), the service will run for only a short time (time often varies) before the service stops. In the application event log the AMS (Core) component
logs the error "Failed to create process mutex".
    - The issue experienced is similar to a previous post by an FMS 3.5 user (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650522)
    Troubleshooting:
    - To rule out a permission issue, I confirmed that the AD user created could actually read from the NAS share
    - I also gave the AD user read/write permission to the AMS install directory. I have also added the AD user to the local admin group. Still get the "Failed to create process mutex" error and service stops.
    - We created a test share on the NAS that had no restrictions set (everyone full control) and reconfigured the ams.ini to use this. The service still stops.
    - I reconfigured the ams.ini back to the default path (local storage) and attempted to start the AMS windows service with the AD account. The service still stops which seems to confirm the issue is not related to the NAS storage/permissions itself
    - I gave the servers machine account from AD read/write access to the NAS shares (both test and live shares) and reconfigured the AMS windows service to use the local system account. Whilst the windows service remains stable and runs,
      streams do not work
    - I have been testing using rtmpdump and a player (http://osmf.org/configurator/fmp/):
       - With the player the player connects and the stream remains in a "buffering state"
       - With rtmpdump we get the "NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound" error. The stream definately exists. I have the rtmpdump log file but not sure how to upload it to this post
    - The above issues/behaviour is experienced from both servers
    Workaround:
    - The only way I can get NAS streaming to work is to map the NAS share as a network drive from the server
    - On the same server I then stopped the AMS windows service and started AMS as a console application (ams.ini is pointing to the NAS location)
    - Streaming then works however this is not an exceptable workaround for a enterprise server that will be streaming content to the Internet. Having to rely on mapped network drives and console applications is certainly far from ideal.
Should it be possible to have the windows service run under the context of another account and to be able to stream without then having to have a mapped network drive?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Jason
UPDATE: to add further, I have just tested this on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard edition with the full UI and I get the exact behaviour/problems as documented above. The issue I am experiencing is not related to the fact I am using the core edition of Windows.

    HI,
I have managed to address my issue and get this working!
When reconfiguring the AMS service to use the AD account you MUST also reconfigure the Adobe Media Administration Server to use the AD account.
This mismatch in accounts was causing the mutex issue and stopping the AMS account from running. Read access to the NAS and log on as a service right on the AMS server
was all that required for the stream from NAS to work.
If any Adobe staff read this thread - can I please request that the section on "Mapping Directories to Network Drives" in the "Configuring the Content Storage" section of the help guide (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/adobemediaserver/configadmin/adobemediaserver_5.0.3_config_adm in.pdf) be revised to be clearer as to what windows services need to be reconfigured
    to support AD authentication
    Thanks
    Jason

  • Looking for help with using a NAS to store iphoto library.

I have a Seagate Business Storage 2 bay NAS and wish to move my iphoto library out of my MacBookpro to the NAS so it can be accessed from my iMac or the other user on the MacBook pro (appreciate that this can be done without NAS but need to make space on the MBP).  I have partially achieved this but get messages saying that cannot access file (reset permission rights) despite the file not being open by any user.  I'm competent but not massively techy and desperately need help.

    SImple: You can't do it.
Two reasons: typically a NAS is the wrong disk format. Secondly having an iPhoto Library on a network is not recommended.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    See this article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
for more. Note also the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”

  • MBP keeps crashing, won't let me transfer data via wireless or hardwired to external or NAS,

Im somewhat of a novice so bear with me, MBP late 2008 core2duo, 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD is machine specs running 10.9.1. Whenever I try and copy and paste through finder files of any size over 100mb it locks up and spin dumps via wireless, finder stops responding cpu spikes erratically, memory pressure sits a constant 2.91gb for a length of time up to an hour before it restarts and gives me the gray screen of death, after 3 more hard boots it will eitehr start up or I dump the PRAM, I have verified permissions via utility, all good, exit disk utility and computer fires back up opening applications as it was pre-crash, files that were being transferred are inaccessible and have to be deleted off the media I am transferring to, which is a 2tb WD My Cloud NAS, when I perform same operation with console open to try and monitor logs for what exactly is happening I get spindump and console stops responding, computer locks up and process restarts. I have tried plugging directly into my router and the only noticeable difference is that I dont get a spindump, everything locks up and I get same results.
Under console in the Report Panic i get this :
