NAS with RAID to store my photos and videos?

I have the following Apple products:  iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad Mini, Apple TV, and two iPhones.  I'm running OX X Mavericks.  I store all my videos and photos (30k +) on a 1TB external hard drive.  I back up that drive and the iMac and MacBook drives to TimeMachine 2TB external drive.  Need a more secure system for backup and redundancy.
I'm a marketing guy, not a tech guy, but I know enough to know that I'm playing with fire the way I have it set up now.  It's too much for the cloud and the cloud makes me very paranoid anyway.
So I'm thinking of buying a Synology DS412 NAS with 4 separate WD Red 4TB NAS Interal Hard Drives and setting up a RAID system. I'd still use the 2TB drive as an external backup once a month and store it someplace other than my house.  (until I have more than 2TB worth of stuff, and then I'd have to get a bigger drive).  Or should I just buy 5 internal HD and swap out one of them every month and keep that one in a separate location?
Does this make sense?

See Here for iPhoto...
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
Make sure that the EXT Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I have made the switch to MAC from PC and I use Sony cameras/video recorders. I used the Sony PMB program to store all photos and videos. Now I need to transfer my photos and videos over to my MAC and I do not know how to do this as PMB is not supported

I need to transfer all my photos and videos from my old PC stored in the SONY PMB program to my new fabulous MAC desktop. I do not know how I can do this. Plus for future photos/videos, how can I upload them from Sony products ?
    Please help me
PS I just purchased the computer yesterday so it has the most current operating system

I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. Do you know where the actual photo files are located on your laptop? If so, you can transfer them to the Mac over a LAN or by saving them to an external HDD, thumb drive or burning them to a disk. Then you can import the photos to the iPhoto app that came on your new Mac.
It would be the same process for the videos, however, it would depend what type of video files they are, as to which Mac app might allow you to view them.
BTW, since your Mac is new you need to Accept the iLife apps; iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie into your Mac App Store/iTunes account. Open the MAS, sign into you account, go to the Purchased pane and accept the apps.

  • I need help with saving all of the photos and videos on my iPhone.

When I access the screen that has Photos, Shared, and Albums and I click on Photos, there are more photos there than the phone is counting that
I have on my iPhone. How do I save all those photos or put them onto my computer? I have saved the photos it will let me but I cannot access the photos from more than 2 years ago. Also my phone says I have 43 videos but only 10 save.
Also, when I upgrade and switch to a newer iPhone, will I see all those photos from the whole history of my phone, will I see all 43 videos, and all my iMessages and SMSs?
    Thank you.

    Hi Sharon,
The best thing for you to do is 2 things.
When you purchase a new device(whether it be a iPhone, iPod or iPad)
    1) Perform a full backup of your old device via iTunes. This will save contacts, calendars, photos, text messages, emails, apps in folders how you left them, music, videos, podcasts etc. Note it won't import your photos unless you tell it to.
1.1) When you get your new device it will ask whether to set up as a new device or from a backup, select from backup and your new phone will look and be exactly the same as your old one, same settings etc.
2)[optional] I personally like to backup my photos to iPhoto on my mac once a month. When  it reaches the end of the library it asks whether to delete originals or not. If you hit no it doesn't change the photos on your device and you have a copy in your iTunes library. This is handy if you want to use photos from your phone on your mac.

  • I have imported all photos and videos from my iPhone 5S into Aperture ver.3.4.5 and now cannot find them. I thought I could open a panel showing all imports and merely list them chronologically, but I don't see how to do this.

I have imported all photos and videos from my iPhone 5S into Aperture ver.3.4.5 and now cannot find them. I thought I could open a panel showing all imports and merely list them chronologically, but I don't see how to do this.  There are over 1800 photos and about 100 videos, any help to locate where they've gone would be appreciated.

Try to search with a Smart Album for photos and videos taken with an iPhone:
File > New > Smart Album:
Add an EXIF rule fro the "Add Rule" drop down menu: EXIF
and set it to "Camera Model includes iPhone".
Set the scope of the search to "Library"
If there are any iPhone images or videos in your library at all, this search should find them.  Then ctrl-click any of the items and select "Show in Project" from the contextual menu.
Generally, Aperture should be showing your last import in the "Last Import" smart album in the "recent" section". And the "projects" view can be sorted by date, so you should see your recent imports.
You may want to check all search fields, if searches are active.

  • NAS with RAID set up

I want to set up a NAS with RAID option. I have my imac (with leopard) and couple of PCs (vista) at home. I also have an xbox which i use media player (sorry no apple TV) for photos etc. Do you have any suggestion which is the best option that with support both PC and Mac. I would also like to use my NAS as my itune server and store my other media file.
I am not a digitally savvy person and am looking for a simple option.

I have been happy with the ReadyNAS line from Netgear (formerly Infrant). They have information and very active user forums where you can ask specific questions at: http://www.readynas.com

  • Why is my Macbook pro with OS lion prompting me my startup disk almost full when i have deleted many files, photos and videos? Even thrashing them doesn't help. There seems to be an automatic space usage in the background

I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

  • Photos and Video do not store on storage card

I have a Palm Treo Pro from Telstra with a Telstra 2gb MicroSD card.  The problem is that I have not been able to view any of the photos and videos I have taken since I bought the phone, because the folder 100MEDIA does not exist.  I have selected the option to store all images and video on the storage card and I believe it should be storing them to the default location of DCIM/100MEDIA.......but there is no 100MEDIA folder.  I don;t want to store them on the device.
So where are all my images and videos?
And I cannot create a any sub-folders (let alone one called 100MEDIA) in DCIM when it is synched as my PC tells me I cannot due to the folder DCIM being read-only, insuffiecient memory or no permission to do this.
I am extremely frustrated as I have potentially lost a lot of sentimental images and vids of my kids.

Okay, I think I understand where you are looking; I had to play around with a few things. You are using the "Explore" button from the ActiveSync window. When you open My Windows Mobile-based device, then Storage Card, it's blank. This particular view looks to be pretty useless.
The easiest solution, although not the cheapest, is to get an adapter that allows you to attach your storage card to your PC. In my case, when I bought my microSD card it came with an SD-sized adapter so I could use it with my existing card reader. The advantage is that you have the full power of Windows Explorer available to work on the card, and speed should be better than using the USB cable. The downside is that inserting and removing the card increases the risk of damage.
I think what Microsoft actually was thinking, though, was that you would set up a sync relationship with Windows Media Player. After the ActiveSync window comes up, fire up Windows Media Player from the Start menu, and look for a Sync button on the toolbar. Underneath is a drop-down that lets you set up synchronization for your Treo Pro for various media including photos and videos. I don't use this method because I don't want all the garbage on my PC to end up on my phone. However, if your media libraries are more organized than mine, it might work for you.
    Hope this helps.

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • How can I change to location of pictures folder? I want to use a backup hardrive to store my photos and music on but still want to be able to go to the finder and click the photos/music button. How can I do this.

I want to use a backup hardrive to store my photos and music on but still want to be able to go to the finder and click the photos/music button. In windows i would just change the properties of the given library folder. How can I do this in Lion?

Move "~/Pictures", or if just iPhoto pictures, "~/Pictures/iPhoto Library", to the new location.
If you moved iPhoto, open iPhoto with the option key held, like Tony T1 writes. Select "Other Library" and navigate to the new location.
To add the new location to the sidebar in Finder, just drag it onto the sidebar.
Same process for iTunes, or whole music folder.

I  wonder if another provider would really be much different?  Read some of the other carrier forums - seems to be the same story everywhere.
I'm not disagreeing with you - I've found that I am usually more informed about Verizon policies and procedures than some of the reps in our local store.

Looking for a back up drive for photos and videos that works with time machine, prefer wireless. Time capsule has poor reviews and already have BT hub that serves as a good router. 3gb or 4gb capacity preferred but 2 would suffice.

Plug a NAS into the BT Hub that does TM. Look at Synology.
You just use the wireless of the hub.
But the cheapest solution is still the TC.

  • Help needed for a new Mac user with his photo and video librarys

after swopping my Ericson for an iphone a year ago. then taking delivery of an iPad on launch day. I have finally taken the plunge and swopped my windows pc for a lovely 27" iMac... what have I been doing all these years using windows? using the Mac is a joy.
As I get more involved with their products I am constantly fascinated (and frustrated) by Apples way of doing things. this situation is no exception and I need Apple people with Apple experience to help me make a decision.
I am looking at software to organise my photos and videos. I have approximately 7000 photos residing on a windows home server. in addition to that there are some 200 or so HD videos taken with either my Sanyo Xacti camcorder or Sony DSC W300 camera. both cameras I think produce MPEG format
my first experience was iPhoto. great for the `price' but not very flexible. single libraries, poor editing facilities. and because I have files referenced and not copied to my iPhoto library, if I deleted from the library its not deleted from the server (and vice versa). this leads to images being displayed in the library that don't exist etc.
then I downloaded the Aperture 3 trial. great until I came across the `Unsupported file format' situation with the MPEG videos that strangely enough, iPhoto will recognise and play (the Apple way of doing things).
    1. should I put the photos on the Mac instead of the server?
    2. Is there a better way of managing the images for deletions etc
    3. should I stick with Aperture because of the editing
    4. is there a better software or way of managing the videos
sorry for the ramble but its all new to me

had a good session on all three of the recommended programs and now have a better understanding of the excellent advice I have been given.
    iPhoto
great `free' program that is easy to use but somewhat limited on features. think I would always be looking to upgrade from here (feels a bit boring)
    Aperture
really enjoyed using this but at £170! a hefty price tag considering its limited file support. fortunately its only my camera video clips (MPEG) that it wont view. my camcorder files (MP4) are fine so this is looking better as a one stop solution.
    Elements
much more than just a image touch up. considering what it can do.. very good value at around £60. teamed with iPhoto it becomes even more attractive.
My issue still remains with the masters file location.
I would prefer to keep all my media on the external server to ensure I have a fail safe recovery option. its a 4TB 5 disk affair which contains all the family music, video images and DVD's etc (likely to change to a Mac server in the future!)
one feature that I cant find, (even in Aperture which surprises me), is the ability to automatically manage deletions from referenced locations? i.e. delete a file from the server and when aperture opens up the thumbnails are updated. or, delete a referenced master in Aperture and an option comes up to delete the referenced file on the external drive.
how would a professional photographer or studio using Aperture manage this process (or would they use something else?)
forgot to mention that through our student facilities i can get a discounted copy of Photoshop CS5 for around £175 which is close to Aperture. is this a worthwhile option or overkill

  • HT4528 With IOS 7 I had to move my photos and videos off to a backup to install the IOS.  When they moved back to the phone during a sync I have no way to delete them.  The trashcan stays grayed out and the usage page doesn't give me a delete option.

I got the message that IOS 7 was ready to download.  I wish I had read the reviews on it first.  I had to move my photos and videos off the phone to free up memory space for the install.  I was still able to see the phone with a file browser and grabbed the photos and videos and stored them in a directory on my hard drive.  Meanwhile my itunes updated too.  So with my files moved and deleted from the phone I made a backup of the phone.  I installed the ios 7.  When I synced the itunes moved my backup directories back to the phone.  I can't figure out how to remove them from the phone.  Under photos they have installed themselves with the names iphone09282013 and videos directories.  When I access them I don't get a delete option.  The trashcan is greyed out.  The settings usage page no longer gives me the swipe delete function.  How do I remove these files to free up space now that I have them saved to my computer?

    Hi Eric Ferguson,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • I need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. Please help

i need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. this is an attempt to consolidate all my data, new and old so I can uninstall Maverick and put Mountain Lion back on my iMac.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the files have been overwritten and you don't have a backup, they're gone.
If they have not been overwritten, then there are third-party apps (for example Techtool Pro 7 ) with data recovery functions that might be able to retrieve some or all of your files.
    Backing up is good.
