Nasty Burning and Disc Recognition Error(s)

Hi there,
I've recently been having two problems with my drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080M model) regarding DVD-R burning. I work with Toast Titanium 7. I also recently tried a new brand of DVD called Dataware (I switched from Ridata, with which I had no problems, but I doubt this is a DVD compatiblity problem).
Problem 1.
My drive doesn't recognize blank DVD-Rs. When I insert the disc, it spins for 20-30 seconds before ejecting, when I've got it set to open Toast when blank is inserted. And when I manually open Toast and insert the disc afterwards, in the 'Record' window, it says 'Waiting...' rather than 'Blank DVD-R'. Again, this occurs for 20-30 seconds before the disc is automatically ejected.
Problem 2.
On the off occasion (like once in every 10 or more blanks), the disc will be recognized and the burn will begin. Midway through, I get a pop-up along the lines of:
The Drive Reported An Error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x44, 0x86
INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE
That's the most recent one; I used to get 'Section ____ is unverifiable' in the verification portion of the burn. But I've had that a few times when I've tried backing up some of my oldest discs that had some scratches, so I didn't really worry too much.
This message leads me to think my reader/writer aren't contacting my discs properly (hence why it can't recognize blanks often), and when it does make contact, it loses its place (maybe why it can't keep burning). Is this possible?
I've run the Apple Hardware test for diagnostics on my hardware - it came up fine, but I'm going to try it again, just in case.
Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated! I'm a university student (one who tries to take very good care of her computer, I should note - I even check any discs before I insert them to make sure there's no dirt or anything), and have papers and notes to take (my degree goes right through summers), so the prospect of having to send my MBP away for several weeks for repair is far from appealing.
And to note, I've never had a problem with it before; I've had it since last September.

Most of the time, when I have a problem like this, it's because of the actual disc being used. Though they may fit under the required 'specs', being DVD-R or DVD+R or whatnot, some burners just don't like some discs.
A while back (this was at least a couple of years ago), there was a post somewhere that listed where each seller got their discs from before relabeling them as their own. There are some discs that are just made with higher quality, more consistently, and those will rarely give you problems.
Anyways, I would always try to test out a different kind of disc in my drive to eliminate that problem first, as for my experience, those kinds of errors have almost always been caused by the disc and not my hardware.

  • Premiere elements does not recognize Blu-Ray disc, says media not present.  Under 12 I was able to record 3 blu-ray dvds using the same burner and discs I'm trying with 13.  What is the problem?

I installed PE13 and cannot burn blu-ray DVDs.  I was able to burn 3 blu-ray DVDs using PE12.  When I select DVD from the menu it recogniazes that it is not a stadard DVD as I get an 'incorrect media' error message.  It will burn standard DVDs of the same video using standard DVD mefia.
    What is going  on here?
When I loaded PE 12 back on the computer I cannot load a file created with PE13.  Looks like a format change?  Can I convert file back to PE12?

  • Blu-Ray player won't burn a disc. Error Code "0"

Hi all, haven't made the jump to CC so we are using CS6 for everything.
I just recently installed a SSD and deleted/fresh install of the CS6 suite onto the newly wiped internal HD. Everything works perfect, except Encore.
Encore is refusing to burn to a DVD. I have been using CS6 since it went public and I have never once had this issue for a Blu-Ray or a DVD. Now, it won't even recognize that a disc is in the burner. It keeps saying to put in a DVD or a Blu-Ray DVD, hit OK etc. I do this, repeatedly, to no avail. Now I have tried creating a Blu-Ray Image which works perfectly fine. However I couldn't get that Image to burn succesfully to a blu-ray. Now it burnt without an issue, (using windows default burner which may be the issue), but when put into the blu-ray player it is just a black image with no menus or anything.
Back to Encore, It will trans-code the files without incident, it's when it goes to the burning session it will not accept any disc I put in. This is for both a Blu-Ray and a regular DVD. I keep getting Error Code "0" or simply, "insert a blu ray or dvd media disc an hit OK". Occasionally I got "Adobe Encore Failed" and that is it. Not sure what to do. I've been trying to burn since this morning.
I gave in and bought Nero 2015 just now in the hopes I can burn the blu-ray image correctly. Do I have any other options as this needs to be done today as I have to be an event tomorrow.
    Thank you!
    Jason

Adding to that, I am not getting the message "The Device Is Not Ready" and you can hit Retry and endless number of times with no results. Or just cancel and then it says Building Failed. Thoughts?

The disk you are using probably has a defect, not uncommon on consumer grade disks. Try another disk or better yet another disk from a different manufacturer or at least a different batch.

    try this...
This is how I managed to fix the problem...and I hope this helps others in the similar situation.
I tried with another program..latest version of Nero, and this was also stopping at the 'initialising' stage. I was now lost! I thought the last resort is to give Evesham (My PC manufacturer) a buzz. They were very helpfull. Basically go into 'Control Panel', 'System', and click on the Hardware tab, then 'Device Manager'. Uninstall everything in the DVD/CDRom Drives. Then uninstall everything under the catagory IDE ATA/Atapi disk controllers. This is where my problem was, as I only had one IDE channel here. You should have 4 or 5! Reboot your machine, and everything will automatically re-load. I tried burning using Nero and it worked. Then the big test was iTunes. It worked 1st time!
I asked why the IDE channels have dissappearred, and he said sometimes uninstalling Programmes occasionally removes them.
I hope this will help others who are having problems to burn stuff on iTunes.

I had been getting this all morning and checked other messages from the community. THe one which worked was trying a different brand of disc.
I had been using Verbatim which had copied the music fine off the Real Player on my PC at school, but wouldn't work with I Tunes. Tried a Staples and an Office Depot CD-R , both of which did the job.

I updated my itunes this morning, and now I keep getting an error message when trying to burn a disc. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
