Native apps not working on Yosemite/ Cannot reinstall
After the Yosemite update virtually none of the native apps on my MacBook (mid 2010) launch. ITunes does, but not AppStore, Safari or even 'About this Mac' option. The icons in the dock bounce once and then nothing happens.
Moreover, when trying to reinstall OS using OS X Utilities (command + R when booting) the 'continue' button cannot be clicked: the mouse pointer works ok, but the options in the top left corner like ‘file’, ‘edit’ etc. do not (I can only navigate between the four options by arrow buttons, use ‘ctrl+q’ to quit and that’s just about it). Trying to install OS X from a CD (‘c’ while restarting) I face the same problem, where it lets me choose the language at the beginning but then won’t proceed as the ‘continue’ button does not respond likewise.
Is there any way to restore or reinstall the system? Please, help!
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

If you have to install from scratch, then you must first install Snow Leopard using the Installer disc that came with your computer when it was new:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

1. Do you have a backup of your MacBook Pro? So you do not lose your applications and data.
2. If you have an install CD then your MacBook Pro must be an early 2011 or older machine - is the CD for Snow Leopard?
3. If you are going to erase the Macintosh HD you need to use Disk Utilities from the recovery HD partition you get by restarting holding the Command and R keys.
4. If that does not permit you to actually choose Disk Utility so you can proceed to erase the HD, then the only option to do that is restart on the Mac OS X install CD that came with the MBP. Insert the CD and restart and hold the C key, then set the language, and go to Utilities and then Disk Utility and choose the Macintosh HD and then Erase. After that completes, Quit DU and select Install Mac OS X and reinstall Snow Leopard. You can then use Software Update to take the system to 10.6.8 if it is a previous version.
At that point you can open the App Store and go to Purchases and do the Yosemite download again. Or, if you had downloaded a Mac OS X version between Snow Leopard and Yosemite, that version should show up under Purchases and you can redownload and install that version.
So, at this point the real question is what do you prefer to do since your Yosemite does not seem to be working correctly, or allowing you to actually do anything? -
Kindle App not working with yosemite
Hi All.
After I downloaded the new Yosemite. I had a notice that said my free kindle app downloaded from amazon is not supported by Yosemite. I Have lots of books stored in this app and I need to know is this down to Apple to fix or should I complain to Amazon?
Who's responsibilty is it to sort this out?
Is it Apples or Amazon?

Tricia.I did the upgrade from the App store, but could find no way to launch the Kindle app other than from launchpad.
What I eventually discovered was that that the original version had originally been parked in the incompatible apps folder, and then the update had overwritten that file. I moved it to the Applications folder and all was fine.
What should happen is that the update should delete the incompatible version and put the working version in the Applications folder with all the other applications. -
Preview app not working since Yosemite update
Preview will not open jpeg or any other document. I get an error message stating "an unexpected error" has occurred. I tried repairing disk permissions and worked with a Genius tech on the chat feature but nothing worked. It was recommended to uninstall and reinstall Yosemite but it failed to work. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Remove the following. You may not find them all.

Reminders App does not work on Yosemite with two iCloud accounts.
The Reminders App does not work on Yosemite (10.10.1) with two iCloud accounts. It seems like when there are two iCloud accounts connected in Yosemite (10.10.1) the plist file for Reminders disappears.
I have tried restarting Reminders; restarting the mac; starting the mac in recovery mode to repair the disk and disk permissions; and starting the mac in recovery mode and reinstalling OSX.Yes sharing Reminders list works. The problem is, I have one shared iCloud account with a colleague (shared calendar, Reminders and email). It makes it easier to run our business with a single shared iCloud account...I know it's not the typical usage.

my iPhoto will not work with Yosemite, and it says that it was purchased under a different account, but that's not the case. Any ideas why I cannot update iPhoto?
How did you buy iPhoto? Did it come preinstalled on your computer with Lion or later, or did it come with Snowleopard on system installer disks?
Which version of iPhoto?
If you have a version of iPhoto '11 and it is showing on the Purchased tab of the App Store, with your Apple ID, then delete iPhoto from the Applications folder (don't empty the Trash) and download iPhoto again from the Purchased tab.
If that does not work, contact The App Store Support from the Quick Links on the AppStore main page.
Only apple Support can fix problems with apple ID. -
My gps is not working. I cannot use turn-by-turn navigation in google maps. I downloaded a GPS test app and it showed my phone is not locking on any satellites. How can I correct this?
We certainly want to make sure you get the most out of the GPS, wplaxico! Was this tested primarily outdoors? When did this begin? Any other recent apps of updates installed when this started?

Foxtel GO app not working & cannot drag to trash.
Foxtel GO app not working. App when opened it is a blank white box on desktop! It will also not drag from launchpad or console into trash. Trash can highlights, then app bounces back out! Im just trying to trash & reinstall. What is wrong?
The app info says it works with ios 4.1 or greater so it has to work with a ip4 as that phone came out with ios 5. You say you got ios 7.1.1 I would take up your issue with the app developer

Ok, this is what I figured out after 4 hours of testing. Restoring as a new device didn't help for me. Also hard reset, re-installs, unchecking and checking all notification options did not help. I installed facebook messenger but also this program did not have notifications (all my other notifications work.....)
As my wife deactivated her account I made up a new test account and logged in on my Iphone 4S. Surprisingly this new account had no notification problem at all. The problem is I had been testing with messages all along (and not with reactions on wall posts). It now turns out that all works fine on my original account except for notifications of private messages (or you can call them chat messages). They will simply not work on my original account but work perfectly on my new test account.
The only difference between the test account and the original acount is that I a have an active user account (FB is doing some testing with acttive users so that they receive lesse indicidual mails by gving those users the option (a check box) to receive overview mails) . I do not know but I definitely know this is an account problem and not an hardware or software problem. So to all of you try to log in with a different or test account to corner the problem. Please react on this post if you have a solution. -

Since installing Lion OS, iCal does not work. I cannot add an event, print calendar, etc. How do i reinstall?
You can use Lion Recovery
Before you do that, go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.iCal.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.
See if you can print or add an event now. -
I lately have found problems with Java apps not working correctly. For example, in Yahoo Widgets I cannot get any widget preferences to display; in Apple's Java Preferences for J2SE 5.0 the preference window opens but is blank; and in JBidwatcher the buttons are missing in main and preference windows.
When I log in as another user I find all those apps work properly, so it seems to be something wrong within my User folder. I tried reinstalling the Java J2SE50ReIease4 but it didn't help. Is there something I can delete and/or reinstall to fix this problem?Ditto here,
I made the mistake of thinking I could throw away the preferences in the Java folder and new pref's would automatically replace the missing pref's, much to my surprise no such thing happened. My settup is the same as yours, except my OS is 10.4.8.

I updated the Facebook app on 1/28/13. New app not working. Followed apple and facebook instructions. App still not working. I cannot get to my Family Feud...because..,.it is on Facebook! I have had my ipad 2 for 20 months with absolutely NO PROBLEMS what so ever...until now. I just want my old app back!!!
