Native fibre channel using SL cards on ONS 15454.

Greetings,
I normally hang out in the Storage Networking forum but I thought this would be a good spot to ask a question.
We current have a dark fibre connection between our sites and have issues with our Brocade switches (yeah, they should be MDS) with buffer zero problems. We want to add more bandwidth for our ISL's and we have a couple of ONS 15454's hanging around in racks in our datacentres.. I have been looking at the SL cards for the 15454 and would like to know if anyone has had success with them. I need to do synchronous True Copy between the storage at both sites for a new project. We are using async now but that wont be good enough.
Any comments would be welcome.
Stephen

Stephen,
I don't have any SL cards in production, but do have ML cards, and a myriad of TXP/MXP's on MSTP platforms.
I can tell you, the ML card does a decent job with distance extension is turned on. I have a few STS-24's extended across 400-500KM span lengths for TAPE drives across ML cards and see consistently high throughput.
Measured latency across a 70km span was about 600us with an ML card. Pretty close to an equivalent circuit built across a Muxponder.
I would venture to say, the only concern that you may have with synchronous replication is the latency.
Regards,
Tom.

  • 1:1 Card Protection ONS 15454

    Hi All,
I am trying to understand the reason why the protect card/port shouldn't be in OOS(Out of service) to avoid any traffic loss even though the protect card is not switching traffic in ONS 15454 as stated below
"When a protection switch moves traffic from the DS3-12 working/active card to the DS3-12 protect/standby card, ports
on the new active/standby card cannot be taken out of service as long as traffic is switched. Lost traffic can result
when a port is taken out of service even if the DS3-12 standby card no longer carries traffic."
    Thanking You

  • Using UDC port on ONS 15454 M6

    Hello,
Two pc/router is connected to udc ports (both left side on 15454 M6 and pcs/routers have ip addr in same subnet). The 10g link is up between nodes.
I'm using straight cables. But pcs cannot ping each other.
What i need to do else to resolve the issue?
And how can i check udc ports are failed or not?
ps: both nodes dont have any alarm.
    Thank you in advance

UDC is terminating with OSC, so it's just point to point, also left UDC port will talk only to left.
so to answer your question, it will not provide connectivity to all PCs.
i'm pasting one reply of mine, please let me know if it helps.
    Here is some basic info,
So every ECU (External connection Unit) has two UDC ports,
UDC port on left side is related to TNC at slot-1,
UDC port on right side is related to TNC at slot-8.
To provision this you have to double click on TNC card at node view, go to Provisioning – UDC/VOIP – select UDC – apply.
So UDC uses payload of STM-1/OC3.
STM1/OC3 is used in MSTP system for OSC (Optical Supervisory Channel), only DCC bytes are used for OSC, here we are using payload for UDC.
So if you have UDC provisioned, and you connect your laptop on UDC LAN port at Node-A and connect you other laptop on UDC port at node-B you are able to ping both of your laptops J
You will get a BW of 100Mbps.
But remember UDC left port should talk with UDC left port at other end.

    Hi,
Was the card previously working in that machine? If it was and you have a G5 tower you could try the card in there. Here is a list of Apple fibre cards and cables which show what's compatible with what. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1769
The card should appear in the System Profiler under Fibre Channel and PCI Cards.

  • Can Time Machine back up Fibre Channel connected drives?

    Hello All,
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5. I am trying to back up drives connected to my tower via fibre channel using Time Machine and am getting the exclusion error that others have been reporting on Lion and Mountain Lion. In Time Machine > Options, I select a fibre channel connected drive to include it in the next backup. It disappears from the exclusion list as it should AND the properly "estimated size of full backup" is created. I select "Save." However, when I select "Options" again, the fibre channel connected drive has been RE-EXCLUDED. This happens with all of the drives connected via fibre channel.
All of the drives have unique UUIDs and display Connection Bus: Fibre Channel Interface and Connection Type: External in Disk Utility. All of the drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended." The drives are all inside of a Facilis Terrablock 24D and are RAID5.
Before updating to Lion, we were able to back up these drives via Time Machine successfully for many months.
Does anyone know if it is possible to back up drives connected via fibre channel with Time Machine on Lion and Mountain Lion? To be perfectly clear, I am trying to simply back up these fibre channel connected drives to a Firewire connected external HD via Time Machine...NOT use a fibre channel connected drive as my Time Machine backup disk.
Your time and help is greatly appreciated!
    Best,

Others have reported the same issue. Apparently it doesn't work.

  • 10G Bigger Pipe on ONS 15454

I have two STM4 SDH capacities and one STM16 SDH spanning two cities over different service providers. See Attachment, I have two Cisco ONS 15454 in two cities, one of the ONS is connected to a GSR router serving as core router while the second ONS is connected to a 7609-S serving as MPLS-PE router, their is DOT1q tagging transparently carried over the SDH circuits between the two routers. I want to make these capacities one big Ethernet pipe (10G) at both ends, this fat pipe should be able to carry multiple VLANs between the attached routers at both ends. Is this achievable? if yes what kind of Ethernet cards do I require on ONS and the routers? Any supporting document will be highly appreciated.

"but I am not sure if Cisco produce a 10G ethernet cards for ONS 15454?"
cisco also have 10G Ethernet card but it can go over DWDM box not STM 16 & STM 4.
I am not sure what ECi and Huwai are offering but i am sure of one thing that even if they give you 10G Ethernet card but you CANNOT map that single Ethernet card to your 3 STM interfaces (1 STM 16 & 2 STM 4). As far as i know you can map one ethernet port to one SDH port (either 1 STM 16 or 1 STM 4).
Before believing ECI & Huwaei discuss that solution with some people, as I know one thing there can be lot of strings later on.
They say totally different thing before but once you buy that then you get to know the real features. You will have the feature but with lot of if & but.
What you can do is if that makes sense in your case, take 10 1Gig (Total 10G) ethernet card then you can map 3 ethernet ports to 3 STM interfaces you have.
Whats is the max speed your provider can give you? If they give you 10G SDH then see if you can get 10G POS card for your routers.
You can think of DWDM solution, this way you can take 10G direct over a wavelngth and lot many later. What is the distance between your 2 ONS?

  • How to using Virtual fibre channel feature in IC 3.5?

Hi ,guys ,i have noticed that microsoft released IC 3.5 to support virtual fibre channel in redhat and centos linux.

in these links above ,notes 2 says:
While using virtual fibre channel devices, ensure that logical unit number 0 (LUN 0) has been populated. If LUN 0 has not been populated, a Linux virtual machine might not be able to mount fibre channel devices natively.
but I do not understand how to ensure logical unit number 0 has been populated ,anyone who have tested such new features please share your expirence , thank you very much.

  • Clarification on how to use Xserve Raid and Fibre Channel without xsan.

First let me apologize for not responding earlier to your response, I tend to get busy and then forget to check back here.
Tod, the answer to your question is No, only one computer is accessing the xserve raid files at any one time and that is via Fibre Channel. However I do have the xserve raids set up as share points via ethernet.
Maybe I should turn that off and only access the files with the one computer that can connect via fibre channel.
I never thought of that. I will try that while I await for your answer, thanks again.

    I have the following setup:
Xserve: 2x2Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 5Gb of Ram, Running 10.5.8 Leopard Server
Xserve Raid with firmware version 1.5.1/1.51c on both controllers, and
    Qlogic Sanbox 5600
Apple Fibre Channel Cards in Xserve, and Mac Pro Tower; Apple 2 Port 4Gbs Fibre Channel Card
Mac Pro Tower-Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.8Ghz, 16Gb of Ram, Running Snow Leopard 10.6.4
    Here is the problem.
The directory for the xserve raids keep getting corrup, and I use disc warrior to rebuild them. Is there a way to keep the directories from getting corrupt? I am a few pieces of equipment before I can build an Xsan as that is the ultimate goal, but until then, I just need to be able to have the raids funciton as storage without having to rebuild the directories all of the time.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

Are multiple computers accessing the same data on the RAID at the same time?
If so then NO. This is the source of your data corruption and I'm surprised if you were able to get all your data back every time if this is how you've been running your system. Each fibre channel assumes it has full and sole control of every volume it has mounted, no data arbitration is practiced and data corruption will occur if this assumption is wrong.
The only way this set-up will work is to use partitions or LUN masks so the volumes are accessed by one computer at any time. As long as one computer relinquishes control before another mounts it you will dodge arbitration issues but this is a dangerous game. If you screw up and mount an already mounted volume - and there is no easy way to tell if a volume is mounted - corruption will then occur. Sharing data simultaneous at fibre speeds is what XSAN does and to do this you need it.

Intel Xserve, G5 XServes, XRAID, Promise

+The xserve raids will mount automatically to any computer that I connect the qlogic fc switch to+
This is source of the corruption to your data. Any computer that attaches to a drive/partition via fibre channel assumes that it alone is in control of the drive and data corruption is inevitable.
+Is that the issue, should I disconnect the xserve from the fc switch and leave it connected via ethernet?+
Short answer: YES. The ethernet connections are fine because the server is controlling the file arbitration through the sharing protocol. Fibre channel connections assumes complete control over the partition and no arbitration of the file access is performed. It's like two people independently driving trying to drive the same car to different locations.
Depending on your set-up it is possible for the two machines to see and use different parts of the Xserve RAID storage but they cannot access the same areas without SAN doing the arbitration.
    Hope that's clear,

  • Problem with fibre channel card and raid system after upgrading to 10.4.7

Hello, I have a problem with our Xserve G4 DP. After the installation of 10.4.7 everything works fine exept our fibre channel card. This card is connected to a Hitachi Raid System which worked fine over a year. But after the update the volume was no longer mounted. I even reinstalled the server to 10.4.4 and no sign of our raid volume. Using the apple fibre channel utiltiy 2.0, I see that there is a connection - but still the raid volume is not mounted. When I restart the server the lights on the back of the card are shortly flickering and sending some packets to the raid system but that´s all. Has anybody an idea?

I have an Xserve PowerPC G5 Dual 2.3GHz (mid 2005).  Have LSI Logic Fibre Channel PCI Card installed (Product: LSI7202XP).

I think there is. It is hard to believe that ~200MB/s read comnpared to 0,7MB/s write speeds are a feature rather than a bug/problem.
I haven´t tested the used xserve with another xraid, I used different server for the Xraid benchmarking.

  • Need Advice on Choosing a Fibre Channel Card

I have an Xserve G5 and will be adding an Xserve RAID. There seems to be a number of choices out there for Fibre Channel cards(i.e. model M8940G/D vs M8940G/B, PCI vs PCI-X) Any advice on the correect card to buy to stay out of trouble would be welcome.

Get the PCI-X card for the Xserve G5.
The previous post is wrong; the Intel Xserves use a PCI Express card.
NO system uses a standard PCI card anymore. That's old, slow technology. Apple doesn't sell PCI cards... only PCI-X (for Xserve G5) and PCI Express (for Intel Xeon Xserve). Actually the Intel one can use either card, IF you get a PCI-X riser card instead of 2 PCI Express ones.

  • PCI Express fibre channel card: chipset/model

    Hi all,
I'm attempting to repurpose a first-generation Xserve RAID (with HSSDC2 ports) on an Intel-based Sun machine. My problem is that I need to find a Fibre Channel HBA which has SFP ports.
The first-gen Apple PCI Express card seems to fit the bill:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA900G/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw
According to several reports online, all Apple FC HBAs are re-branded LSI cards.
My question is, what chipset does this card use? And what is the equivalent LSI model number?
If someone who has this card installed could hit Apple System Profiler and paste the output for the FC card here that would be great

Yes, it is an LSI card.
Check out AlienRAID. It's a web site dedicated to running the XServe RAID in non-Apple environments. I used their site to get an XServe RAID running on a Sun server a few years ago, although I don't remember the details now.

  • DWDM for provide native fibre to another site.

I hear that Cisco are going to offer the 4 and 10 Gbps DWDM SPFs that plug directly into the MDS so I got a bit excited at work discussing this with the network people. They are mucking about with optical test gear right now.
They raised a very interesting point that I am sure other people have had to deal with. They were concerned that it would be difficult to do very high level encryption with DWDM. They said that it can be achieved with FCIP so why go down the optical path.
So, has anyone done high level encryption for DWDM over SDH? Is there any problems with encryption of the data?
This raises another point about the DWDM. If I have a number of 4 Gbps ports available, could I put them together to make a larger "pipe". If we were happy with 8 or 12 Gbps native fibre extension, could we make something like a port channel of 2 or 3 x 4 Gbps SFPs? As we have two core switches to provide alternate paths to everything, I would expect that I could continue using the multipathing to the remote site.
I currently don't see the sense in spending heaps to get the (two) 10 Gbps line cards and only use one port.
    Regards
    Stephen

    Hi Tim,
Thanks for your reply. It was most valuable. I discovered another company that provides a product called NeoScale CryptoStor SAN VPN which obviously means that this can be done. Their encryption is not on the same level as what we would need but it has to be a start. The system has limited abilities for throughput considering the speeds that can be achieved.
