Native JSON support in Next SQL Server Release
Dear Team,
With 9.3 and upcoming 9.4 release PostgreSQL has started supporting JSON data type. Oracle is following it in their 12c release, when can we expect this in MS SQL? Also will it cover native functions within DB engine which can translate JSON to XML and reverse?
Best Regards
Shrikant Kulkarni
Thanks Cairney_M!! <o:p></o:p>
I did considered CLR and JSON parser UDF from - http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/SQLCLR/74160/ and https://www.simple-talk.com/sql/t-sql-programming/consuming-json-strings-in-sql-server/.
However I didn't fell code is traceable as well as scale-able. The one from Phil Factor looks great, it does handles recursion within nodes. Functionalities within PostgreSQL looks much complete where they have ability to CROSS APPLY (Lateral) with JSON
TFV's. <o:p></o:p>
we have unique situation here with JSON text strings coming from Mobile devices, moving to NO-SQL / SQL Azure platform couple be best option here
but standing up whole infrastructure and support for one of the feature is costly. <o:p></o:p>
I am hoping to see same in SQL Server soon and I did vote for it. Anyways - custom SQL CLR seems to be the best option for now.

SCVMM support for Microsoft SQL Server 2014
Hi
Does anybody know if Microsoft SQL Server 2014 supported and/or does it work, when installing SCVMM 2012. Current documentation stills says SQL Sever 2012.
Thankshi,
SQL Server 2014 is not supported: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn281933.aspx
I did not test if SQL 2014 works.

ODI's CDC Support for MS SQL Server 2000
Hi,
Does ODI provides CDC with log for MS SQL Server 2000? I read somewhere that we need to get a separately priced adapter for this because ODI supports only trigger based CDC for MS SQL Server 2000 and 2005.
Could anyone please shed some light on this?
Thank you.Hi,
Are you able to find out any info on this?
Appreciate your help on any leads..

Hi all,
This is my scenario:
I created a new MVC project using VS 2012, and this project supports membership registration through SqlProvider which store membership information into a built-in database that created by VS2012. The connection string that VS2012 set is to point to the
file name (.mdf) directly within the project's App_Data folder. The project runs without problem on my local under the VS 2012 environment with Sql Server 2008 installed (however the database file can't open with SQL 2008 because it is created to work with
SQL 2012 through VS 2012). My questions are:
1. If I don't have Sql 2008 or Sql 2012 installed, will the project still work under VS 2012 environment?
2. If I deploy the project to a new hosting server without Sql 2012 install, will the project still work under IIS environment?
3. If I don't want to use Sql 2012 database, can I tell VS 2012 to create Sql 2008 database instead?
Thanks,
SamHello Sam,
1. Only "particular", as soon as function tries to access the SQL Server database (file), the web site will fail
2. See 1.
3. Install an additional SQL Server 2008 instance and use that one

MSDN SQL Server Release Notes - January 2015
This Preview release contains updates made to protocol documents since the last release.
The following known issues exist in the January 2015 release:
Underscore characters are not always visible in code in the PDF files depending on the magnification selected by the user. Those characters are present in printed versions.
Information in a table row may split across two pages.
Table borders are not always visible depending upon the magnification selected by the user. Borders are present in printed versions of the PDF.
Cross-protocol links are only functional when the PDF files for the protocols are in the same folder.
Note: Links in the PDFs don’t resolve in Adobe Reader 9 because Adobe has changed the default setting for view mode
in Adobe Reader 9. To access links, perform the following procedure:
In Adobe Reader 9, go to the
Edit menu and click
Preferences.
In the
Categories list, click
Documents. Under
PDF/A View Mode, change the selection from
Only for PDF/A documents to
Never, and click
OK.

MDS related fix is:
FIX: Add three stored procedures to clean up history that is created when you use SQL Server 2012 MDS
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3036601
After using MDS for a while, the transaction/validation/staging history may grow very large. In this CU we provide 3 store procedure to clean them up manually.
The fix will be ported over to SQL 2012 SP2 and SQL 2014 CUs in the coming 2 months.
In next SQL Server release, it will be automated by MDS maintenance job.

Thanks.Hey DBT,
SQL Server 2014 Express supports your operating system.
You can see the link below the requirements for each version: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
Did you try to restart the computer and then try installing again?
There are users that it helps them, it might solve the problem but preventing them expect an error and understand why it happens.
Sometimes it appears as a result of lack of .NET Framework (check the Microsoft article if you meet the requirements before installation).
If you are interested to View and Read SQL Server Setup Log Files
I've provided you a link that explains simply how to do this.

When is or will there be a SQL Server 2012 R1 SP2 release date?
SQL Server 2012 SP 1 was released over a year ago on 11/8/2012. When is the next service pack going to be available? I see announcements for SQL Server 2014 CTP's, but what about fixing 2012?
SQL Server is now up to CU5. I had a small hand in CU5 after reporting issues with CU4. One of the fixes found in CU4 broke SSRS multi-value reports, oddly enough. CU5 continues to have 'unexpected errors' but SSRS is
fixed. Where CU's clearly stated to have limited testing and no guarantee to work in all environments, it is essential these cummulative updates are packaged in a hardened Service Pack.
Is there no SP2 release date in sight?Hello,
I have never seen Microsoft releasing a service pack of SQL Server on January. I think you should
expect the next SQL Server 2012 service pack between February and April.
Customers should expect SQL Server service packs every 12-15 months except for the first service
pack of each new version. The first service pack of each new version comes usually 9 months after RTM has been released.
Hope this helps.

Alberto Morillo

Why to use SQL Server's native backup facilities, not other backup solution?
I've been asked in my company: why to use SQL Server’s native backup facilities? Instead, they currently rely on other backup software, like Backup Exec, BrightStor, or even Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager. Those solutions let the
company manage all of its backups—including SQL Server—in a single place, whereas SQL Server’s native backup abilities only apply to SQL Server.
So what does SQL Server native backup facility give us more to be forced to use it?Satish and Pawan ... thanks but, a backup solution is just there. they don't need to pay anything. even though, having a backup solution that backup everything on the server, like files, software.. etc is needed regardless if you have SQL Server databases
or not, and if it does database backup it would be even better and more complete as a backup solution. So sorry your answer is not an enough reason that will force me to leave that complete backup solution and use the SQL Server backup tools specifically to
backup databases.
Olaf ... thanks as well. But I was just counting a number of solutions that i think they are related to backup things. yet I believe that Symantec backup exec does backup for SQL Server database, ain't?! what I understood from the link that you gave me,
that some backup applications (if not all) use SQL Server backup facilities to do database backup, is what I understood correct? if yes then the question will be, is there any situation or reasons that force me to use SQL Server backup tools even if I have
those backup solution (that some of them in the backgroud they are using SQL Server backup facilities)? does SQL Server backup tool give me more capabilities in backing up databases than what I find in backup solutions?
The answer is NO, as of now you get all these features in 3rd party native backups...
So in nutshell Microsoft never forces you to use SQL Servers Native backup -----The only reason why you get native backup featues is since SQL Server is an Enterprise Solution MS provide you all features in-built within the bundle so that you don't have
to purchase any other license (incase you\your company doesn't have one already)

Upgrading SQL Server from 2008 to 2012 doesn't respect existing install / instance paths
Basic Information : Running Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with MS SQL Server 2008 (version 10.0.5869), trying to upgrade to SQL Server 2012. Currently working in a cloned
VM of our production server (so I can try things and not worry about affecting our production system).
Current server setup:
C Drive: Operating System (About 7 GB of 50 GB free)
J Drive: Program Files (About 65 GB of 78 GB free)
F Drive: SQL Databases (About 120 GB of 195 GB free)
Issue: I am trying to do an upgrade of our existing MS SQL Server 2008 install. I am using the GUI method, and choosing "Upgrade from SQL Server, 2005, SQL Server
2008, or SQL Server 2008 R2" in the Setup GUI:
All the checks & rules run with no issues. When I get to the "Instance Configuration" screen in the setup GUI, it is not respecting where my SQL Server instance is already installed (which is on the J drive). Instead it wants to install EVERYTHING
(including Instance Directory, which should be on the F drive, and the install folder, which should be on the J drive) on the C drive under C:\Program Files\ and there is no option in the GUI to change that, as it's grayed out.
I tried using a Configuration File to do the upgrade, but when I tried to specify the specific paths, it says those variables are not allowed to be used in an upgrade. If I allow the install to go through, it seems to install fine, but only leaves me with about
1.5 GB free on the OS drive (Drive C) and all of SQL Server is now installed on Drive C, which is not what I want or need.
Looking in the Registry Editor, I can see that under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft
SQL Server\MSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\ that the SqlProgramDir key
has changed from "F:\" to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\" and that the SQLPath and SQLDataRoot have
changed from "F:\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL" to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL". SQLBinRoot has
also been changed "F:\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn" to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn".
It doesn't seem to want to follow where the existing Install and Instance Directories are. Am I missing something here? I've done a decent amount of research, but can't find anything that talks about this. So I'm at a loss as to what to do from here.I haven't touched the registry. Here is the ConfigurationFile.ini from the original install (I've scrubbed sensitive info out of it) showing the paths:
