'Natural' Track Or

There are various earlier posts on this topic re other players and I wonder therefore whether it is a generic issue with all MP3 players, but just in case there is more recent knowledge, please bear with me if I am repeating what is obvious or already answered. When transferring tracks from an album to my Zen V, the natural order of the tracks is lost and alpha order takes its place. For some CDs this is not an issue but for li've recordings and multi-movement classical recordings, this is not acceptable,? I can see why alpha order applies, but I would have thought that the need to preserve the natural order of the source material was so fundamental a requirement that it ranks up there with the provision of?a volume control, on/off switch etc. Do audio books get loaded with the chapters jumbled? Please tell me there is a workaround or a software pacth for this available or planned, and that?I will not, having ripped the CDs to the creatri've media player, have to laboriously rename all the tracks to include 00, 0, 02 etc at the beginning of the name,? Again, I undertand the logic of the workaround, but the need to do it is just too bizarre for words

Call me crazy, but my friends Zen V Plus is doing the opposit of what all here describe. And its driving us crazy. It does NOT play in track title order such as a.wma, b.wma, c.wma, 2a.wma, 2b, 2c. etc. The track titles represent the disk number of the book and the letter is the track order on the that disk. So aphabetically, the book would play in order even if there were hundreds of files in that one folder.
INSTEAD it is playing in order of "tracks" in the tag. Each of the book's 9 CDs has a track one, a track two etc. It is not reflected in the file name, but it does say , 2, 3 etc in the Tag field. So the player instead play a, 2a, 3a ... 9a, then b, 2b ... 9b, etc.
We have listened to books on the CZNano and Nano Plus and they play correctly, that is alphabatized by track name. Can someone tell me how to make his V Plus work that way. If I can't do this I would have to edit literally hundreds of tracks by hand, calculating how many tracks in totality of the 9 CDs in order to get them to play in the proper order.
Thanks
Mike

    I know - but it's like that:
    - either you have had activated the Security Audit Log at that time, then you can evaluate the Security Audit Logs at any later point of time.
    - or you have to be fast in order to evaluate the statistical records (which will be "condensed" after a short period of time)
I'm sorry, but the system does not track all activities and store the information for a longer period of time - just for the case that someone wants to evaluate the traced data at any later time. Only if you have instructed the system to do so (-> activating the Security Audit Log) it will record the events you have decided to be of interest.
Actually it's the same in "real life": if you have installed a surveillance camera at certain spots of interest you'll be able to evaluate the recorded data. Otherwise you have to be fast in order to be able to perform a forensic analysis (evaluating the "natural tracks" - before the rain will wash them away).

  • Bookmarks on a Zen V P

I can't seem to set bookmarks on my Zen V. I've tried the things recommended on other posts with no luck. When I go to the Bookmarks menu option it tells me I have to set the bookmark from Now Playing. But when I'm in Now Playing no button combination that I've found will bring up anything to do with bookmarks. I've tried pausing and then using the back button to get to the bookmarks and depressing the control joystick thing but it does nothing. I've got 2 Zen's (we're using them in the public library) and they both do the same thing so I don't think it's a defecti've player. We went with Creative players specifically so we could use the bookmarking feature so it's very frustrating that we can't figure out how to use it. Can anyone help?

Yes, same with me plus add'l item on my 'wish list'. My primary purpose is for audio books and I'd like the bookmarking capability but a prior poster mentioned the bookmark only worked for that one track and the device did not 'remember' the playlist. Like them, I load all 20-30 tracks onto the device so I want to be able to return to my last position and move forward from there in the natural track sequence. Is this possible with current device hardware? My other wish is to create two 'sub-folders', one with the audio books and a 2nd for music. I'd like to move in and out of either folder and still be able to mark my place in each. Again, is this possible with? this device ?Thanks?!

  • "fine/sample delay", mixing down live drums, esp for JustinC!

I'm curious about the "fine/sample delay" and "phase inversion" techniques briefly mentioned by JustinC in an older post regarding recording live drums. I understand using phase inversion on snare mics that are pointing up/down, but I'm not 100% sure about the fine delay adjustment. Is this actually shifting the audio to line up waveforms from mics that are different distances from the same source? I've done this with an upright bass before (F-hole mic and another a few feet away) and it seemed to get a much fatter, clearer sound. I really appreciate any tips you might have on how to pinpoint and solve the problems.

    hey over-man,
I was prowling tonight and ran across your post. I don't know your reference specifically but I understand your question.
Sample delay regarding a multimic'ed source:
This is based on phase cancellation and reinforcement. It is initiated by everything in a multimic'ed environment. The times, distances, microphone choice, effects choice-it's everywhere.
The best approach for me (typically) is to get the most appropriate sound earlier on unless you can expect variables ahead of time and factor them in right away. We'll work with an example of simply getting a natural drum sound that will line up with existing tracks (bass, gtr, vox...).
    1) You can set up the sound/mics as close as possible to fit the sound you're after (we'll breeze over these points not specific to your question).
    2) Before destroying the sound with a handful of plugins adjust delays. Some assumptions can be made:
A: Overheads/Room Mics will typically be the reference for the reason that they are what you have least control over because they represent more sources (Drums in this case).
B: These Mics will often have the largest delay from the start for the reason that they are farthest from the source.
C: These Mics should be adjusted less than others, I would EQ them quite minimally. Solve any problems as early in the signal chain as possible and use only what you know you'll need. Do not apply FX you don't need and position mics to better suit your desired sound.
So your OHs/Rooms are as good as they can sound naturally and sit with the track as well as possible, you can now start adjusting delays/intrtoducing other elements.
The order can vary here but I tend to start with the tracks/mics which will be more prominent. I will use snare in this example.
Some useful tools before we resume: Logic's sample delay, Expert Sleepers' Latency Fixer, because Logic's Sample Delay will not predelay. Found here:
    http://www.collective.co.uk/expertsleepers/latencyfixer.html
I would normally just load both of these up, I use full PDC and apply these AUs to each track-remember to turn off Software Monitoring!
Create an instance of Latency Fixer, set it to 2048 samples. You have now added 2048 samples of predelay to your track.
Create an instance of Sample Delay, set it to 2048 samples. You have now adjusted your track to play back at the original record position.
Copy both instances to each adjacent track.
So we now have Latency Fixer followed by Sample Delay on each track for the kit (not necessary for the OHs unless you want to shift everything a little, but I will often do this from the arrange by ms).
At this point you will not need to adjust Latency Fixer's settings and simply use sample delay to offset delay in either direction.
Bring the snare track up to a reasonable level (the closer you are the better). Adjust Sample Delay in either direction and you will notice the sound changes from phase cancellation/reinforcement. Certain frequencies will stand out more at different settings. It normally won't take much, we don't want it to sound like a delay. Someplace within +/- 300 samples is often best for a natural sound. It's a good idea to have a phase inverter (Gain PlugIn) handy for 2 reasons: It may sound better inverted. You can invert the phase to pronounce things you DON'T want to hear and then flip it around the right way after setting the delay to pronounce them. Volume has a huge bearing on interaction here, a good delay setting may sound bad after reducing the level 2dB so Sample Delay setting, volume and phase should all be updated as soon as possible.
By now you have noticed how adjusting the delay affects the sound, inverting the phase is an exaggerated example of this principle. Inverting the phase of two identical tracks cancels them entirely, applying fine delay to one will introduce some of the frequencies and leave some cancelled. You can hear it scan through which frequencies by adjusting the delay. With multiple sources, different mics and different distances these delays already exist. Delaying them so they match (based on distance) is not always the best sounding but try to start somplace close. After setting the delay and Volume as close as possible you should be able to get away with much less surgical types of PluggIng and ultimately have more natural sounding tracks. Will often comprise 75% of the sound (if you want natural tracks).
If there are dynamic effects you know you'll want to apply there are special considerations.
Many of Logic's "lookahead" paramaters delay the signal.
Compression/Gating, etc. (on a per track basis) will alter the volume significantly enough that if you know you want a track compressed... ahead of time you should probably set these as you would then adjust the delay.
I tend to use predelayed tracks as keys for the audible tracks, this allows you to get around the aforementioned lookahead problems and will provide you with more control over the "shape" or envelope.
Concerning phase inversion based on which head you mic: It is a generalized solution to mic setup, though not a hard and fast rule which applies in every case.
Delaying in this manner is aligning waveforms. Based on frequency you are causing some frequencies to stand out more or less since we are working with complex waveforms. Very small deviation from original position will affect higher frequencies most and as you get further away from the original postion it begins to affect mids and eventually low frequencies. Of course this is because the frequency/wavelength. Align and misalign the waveforms for your desired sound. It does require you listen very closely when setting it up but I really think the results are worth the effort. Hopefully you'll find this helpful, it's easier to hear the effect than to describe it, hopefully it is apparent once you hear it.
Finally, I don't have any Platinums. If it doesn't work better for you, don't believe it needs to. Hopefully others will chime in here so you can get some second opinions on the approach and/or general drum mixing techniques.
    Cheers, J

  • Nature of a track

How to change the nature of a track in arrange? I mean changing a track from audio to instrument or midi or whatever. It was easy in pre L8 - just hold the trackname and a list appeared, now it doesn't and even more - in the inspector window the track type is grayed out.

Indeed it works, thanks. But only if you have your mouse configured to show the shortcut menu and I have it set to show the toolbox. There are two options when you rightclick on the track header - the one you mentioned as well as a second one 'configure track header'. The 'configure track header' menu item is also located in the view menu - why can't we find our topic menu item there, either?
I found a semi solution for this - in the environment: create an audio track (it automaticaly appears in the arrange) then change it to bus and voila!
    So, to sum everything:
There are at least 2 ways to achieve track type change:
    @@ one is to rightclick on a track and choose 'reasign track object' (this works if your mouse is set to open the shortcut menu, not the toolbox);
@@ second way: go to environment and click 'channel' in the inspector part of the window.

  • Importing CD Tracks with Chapters

I've read a few posts about adding chapters to Podcasts, but I was wondering if there was any way to Chapter an audio track. In longer tracks (like in Pink Floyd Albums) the song naturally goes in 'movements' and it would nice to be able to navigate within the song. I know of Mpgtxwrap for dividing up MP3s but 1> i would rather keep in AAC and 2>i want to keep the track intact.
    any thoughts?

  • HT201272 1 track from iTunes is only playing until 3:50 (should be 14:48). Rest of album is OK. Happens on computer & iPod. How do I fix that track? "Purchased (new)" on right side of iTunes doesn't give me a Music option - just Apps and Books.

    Hello,
I've purchased and downloaded an album from the iTunes store. It has 5 tracks. Tracks 1-4 are all fine. Track 5 is broken - it should have approx 15 minutes of music, but only plays to just under 4 minutes. This happens on my computer and on my iPod. How can I fix this please?
I've tried going to the "Purchased (new)" option in the quick links on the right hand side of the iTunes store. I thought I'd see an option for "Music" on the page it takes me to, but I don't get that option: I only see Apps and Books.
I'm using the computer that I purchased and downloaded the album from. It is authorised for this account.
I'm not aware of interrupting the download yesterday - it all seemed OK to me at the time and I thought it had completed successfully.
The album is Dvořák: Cello Concerto, Zuill Bailey, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra & Jun Markl. It's the last track (In Nature's Realm) that's got the problem.
    Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately you can't redownload music in all countries, as you have found.
You can however contact iTunes support regarding this issue here:

  • Defective Song Tracks Since iTunes 10.5 (also, recently purchased songs/albums are not showing up in purchased area for redownload purposes)

Last night I purchased the new Coldplay album from the iTunes store on my PC (as opposed to the iPad or iPhone). 2 of the 14 song files are defective (my bad ones are tracks 2 and 3). Those two play music for about the first 20 or 30 seconds of the track and then skip immediately to the next track. I had the same problem last week with two other albums I purchased from the iTunes store (also on my PC like last night). In those cases, I simply went to the "Purchased" quick link area and found everything I had just purchased. I deleted the defective files and then redownloaded them without a hitch. The replaced files now play fine.
However, the Coldplay album does not show up in my "Purchased" section (not last night or this morning when I rechecked). I am unable to redownload the defective files. I am doubly disturbed by this. For one, I have never had defective music downloads up until iTunes 10.5 and now I've had them on the three albums I've downloaded since. Two, now the "redownload music from the iCloud" function is not working for the most recent purchases. Perhaps this is true of all music purchased from iTunes over the past few days for everybody? Most people are probably mentioning Coldplay here on the boards because it's the hot new album. Note that this apparently is not affecting iOS apps, because my recent (within 24 hours) apps do show up in the purchased area.
It's very frustrating, because I want to sync this new Coldplay album with my iPhone so I can listen to it and I hate to have to transfer an incomplete album to it. My OCD-like nature gets to me sometimes. Part of me wants to just repurchase the two defective song files and hope that Apple won't charge me twice.

LOL!!! I had checked iTunes before writing this and the music was not there. I check after writing and now it has shown up. It took iTunes about 12 hours to do it though.
Last week, the music I purchased showed up immediately.
I guess iTunes is just not working as effeciently as it did last week. Could still be a bug or maybe just swamped servers? However, the problem that is most annoying to me right now is that all the music I have downloaded since iTunes 10.5 has contained defective tracks that needed to be redownloaded. I do not recall that ever occuring before.

  • Cleaning up noisy vocal tracks

I have a few hundred vocal tracks to clean up, ie: room noise, lip smacks, coughs, etc. in between the actually singing. Right now I am manually going through eacj track and putting silence where I want it. Strip silence is not the best, as there are coughs, etc. that would be above the setting and it's hard to be accurate so as not to lose subtle beginnings and endings.
So...any suggestions that could save me days of cleaning the tracks up manually.
BTW, I am not mixing the tracks. I am importing them to Pro Tools at another studio and having them do it, so I can't just throw a gate on them.
    Thanks!

    What Jim said and...
What I do is instead of cutting the track completely to quiet it, is I used the features in Logic to reduce the level of the part of a track way way down. So even if there is a lip smack, I focus on that and take down the amplitude until I can barely hear it with the track soloed. It's not total quiet, you won't hear it in the mix and you don't get the super quiet of killing the sound.
Second, on your breaths, like Jim said don't take them out, however, listen to the volume of the breath as compared to the vocals, sometimes the breath is louder than the first word, so again turn down the volume of the breath so it sounds more natural as part of the sound, and second be sure that your breaths are on beat. I know this sounds crazy, but if you listen to CDs there are breaths in all vocals, but they're on beat, if they're not then you'll hear that and they will throw you off, the breaths become part of the beat of the song. If the breath is off, move it left or right depending on how far off it is.
There is no shortcut to what you're trying to do. Put in the time to get the right result. once you get going, you'll find a grove. I can edit a 4 minute song now (2 tracks of vocals) in about 5 mins. Just find the technique that works and apply the effect to it.
The other thing you want to keep in mind is that while YOU may not want to put a gate on it, the engineer in the other studio can and will put one on if a track is a bit noisy, so just get it good/great enough for him to work with. Let him/her do his/her job And since it sounds like you're going in a real high end studio, the gate they have I'm sure will be good enough
If you do too much you might end up making the engineer's life harder!

  • Feature request: Importing/backup/archive of tracks with metadata

    Hi everyone,
I've found that one of the things iTunes does better than any other music player is handling and organising song information. Have you ever seen a PC user's jukebox? Thos things are a real mess, with cryptic track names ("mike mills - air - talkie walkie - 05"), artists in the album column, etc...
All of this information which describes the file itself is called "meta-data", and iTunes handles meta-data in two seperate places: the song file itself (ID3 tags in MP3s, for instance) and the iTunes library file.
You'll notice that when you drag a music file from one iTunes library to another, the meta-data stored in the file itself is preserved (artist, title, track number, etc...), while the meta-data stored in the iTunes library isn't (your rating, the play count, the last date played, etc...).
What I'm suggesting here is a feature that allows one to:
    (a) make a folder / burn a disk with the song files AND a special iTunes meta-data (XML?) file, so that all meta-data is preserved,
    (b) optionally delete the music files from your library after backup (i.e. archiving), and naturally,
    (c) open and read backup/archive folders and disks, and allow one to reintegrate songs, playlists or the entire collection back into one's main music library.
I hope Apple is listening, because I think this feature would be really easy to implement, and would make a lot of people (especially those who keep their music spread across 2 or more computers) very happy!
I've already set up a smart playlist ("Give me 4.5 GiB of disabled (unchecked) tracks from my library, sorted by least recently added") that gives me the candidates for archival. Now, all I'm hoping for is a button that allows me to archive (move) everything to a DVD, clear some space on my PowerBook hard drive and rest assured that if I ever want to go back and retrieve a track, it'll be waiting, with the playcounts, song information and ratings all intact!
...either that or make all hard drives at least 1000 times bigger. I'm not picky.
    Cheers,
    - tonyboy
    PowerBook G4

    Thank you for an idea!
I wrote a simple script to get metadata from files and offset AE clip times respectively. It is quite dirtycoded but does the job for me. Maybe someone will want to use this script, so I put it on a public accessible URL: http://zig-zag.ru/usefulshit/ae/xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    My workflow is as follows:
    - I separate camera footages (.mov, .jpg, etc...), and put them to folders like camera_01, camera_02 etc
    - create new project in AE, new composition - named "camera_01_p1", import files from camera_01 folder to a project panel, drag'n'drop them to a compo, select "camera_01_p1" compo and run xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    - I have 8 hours of footage, so I duplicate "camera_01_p1" composition, name it "camera_01_p2", delete all layers but unshifted ones, rerun time shifter script, repeat with the rest
    - do the same with camera_02 (don't forget to adjust still photo layer duration before time shifting)
    - export to a premiere project (yeah, thank you for this one!)
    - then I open project in premiere, copy everything to a same sequence (different layers where needed)
    - last thing is to sync entire video and photo layers at some known moment - it is done easily by placing marker at some time feature on different video/audio clips, and manually shifting entire layer to sync
    - profit!
Since we are allready offtopic to premiere, I place some of my notes here:
    - XMPFile function does not read files like "/d/path" on my windows 7, so I replaced them with "d:/"
    - don't understand why, but this check - if(fname != null){ is not working. So script will fail on compositions with solid, null, etc. layers.
    - I wrote simple date parser that is currently working with Nikon D3 (.jpg) and Canon 5D mk2 (.mov) but it can fail on some other models/formats.

  • Tutorial - how to track user progress in a Captivate movie

I wanted to start working with the new scripting capabilities
in Captivate 4 and thought a good first project would be to create
a set of variables and custom actions and execute the actions based
on the state of the variables. I wrote up a description/walkthrough
with screenshots and the source .cp is downloadable here:
    http://elearninglive.com/wordpress/2009/01/tracking-user-progress-in-captivate-4-using-var iables-and-actions/
Hopefully it proves useful to others!
A couple of things I mention at the bottom of the post in
regards to the new features in CP4:
    1. The actions window is amazingly slow once you add more
than a handful of actions. Perhaps it's just my machine? I have a
very fast machine with lots of ram, but perhaps it's something
    unique to my environment?
    2. You can't 'chain' actions. In other words, you cannot use
'execute multiple actions' setting to execute user-created actions,
just the built-in ones, which seems to me a pretty big limitation.
I had to work around it.
    3. As an add-on to #1 above - there is no way to
import/export code. Since the actions window is so slow it would be
ideal if we could just import code written in a text file, or
better yet, have a simple code editor (like the actions panel in
    Flash).
My 2 cents, fwtw, as a new CP4 user....

The biggest problem Authorware had was poor marketing. Second

  • How to Change Carrier for Package Tracking in Apple Mail 8?

When I receive a shipping confirmation email, Apple Mail automatically detects the tracking number and creates a hyperlink to USPS tracking. This is wonderfully convenient... if you live in the USA.
I live in Canada, so most of my packages are shipped with Canada Post. Naturally, USPS doesn't recognize the tracking number, so this feature is essentially useless. Is there any way I can change the carrier to Canada Post, or preferably to a universal tracker such as www.packagetrackr.com?
I was hoping Apple would address this with the release of Yosemite/Apple Mail 8, but I can't seem to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you're talking about the sender name (the name that appears on the From line when you send email), to change it on your Mac Mail, go to icloud.com, sign into your account, open Mail, click the gear shaped icon on the bottom left and choose Preferences, go to the Accounts tab and enter the name you want to use in the Full Name field and click Done.  Then quit Mail on your Mac (Command-Q) and re-open it.  Your new From name should now appear in the drop-down list when you compose a new email.

  • Suddenly can't connect to a single torrent tracker.

I'm not talking about peers/seeders or download speeds here, but the actual connection where I can see information about the particular torrent before downloading is even considered. I've never had a problem before, and usually download around 50GB a month. My internet connection is fine, my ports show they are open as usual. I've obviously approached my ISP about this, but just wondered if there was anything I might check that I haven't thought of, other than my ISP, that could possibly stop me connecting to the tracker?

I'm using Transmission, but I'd tried another app to see if it was that before posting. The thing is sig, it's suddenly just started working again. I suppose it could have been the ISP, but all they suggested was to reboot the router, which I'd already done. I have noticed recently that there can sometimes be a 30 second lag between opening the torrent and the info panel revealing the seeds/leechers, where usually it's instant. I didn't think anything of it knowing the nature of torrenting until just now. Could this be indicative of a modem fault in some way, and if so how would I test it? I'd assumed that internet traffic to the modem is the same - if it's working it's working.

    Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:

If the entire system hangs or locks up (for example, if the system clock freezes and stops counting up), you may also be experiencing some variety of Kernel Panic. If that is the case, you may also find this article useful:

  • How do you 'switch off' audio destination tracks?

I'm at the beginning of lesson 13 in FCE 4 Editing Workshop and am perplexed by the instruction to 'switch off destination tracks A1 and A2' by clicking on the buttons at the head of each track. There are several things that could be called 'buttons' in the patch panel. first there is a green circle with a speaker graphic which I assume is to 'mute the track, next there is a left-rounded shape with the lettering a1 in it which separates from the right-rounded shape with A1 in it if I click on it, I don't think that is the button either, next, there is a lock shape which I assume is to lock the track from modification and I don't think that is the button to switch the track off either, next is a funny square with rectangles on four sides which seems to do nothing if I click on it but become filled or not filled.
Which, if any, of these graphical buttons should I be choosing to switch off the destination track? What appearance change will I see in the button between being on or off?
    TIA,
    Ken

I think a more visual learning tool like a DVD would suit you better.
Possibly, but I agree with your book mostly on this subject that Editing is best learned by editing. This then means that the actual working with FCE is best learned by digging in and doing it, which naturally brings me to the many points which are not clear. These forums are the saving grace for users like me I do believe. A DVD would be incomprehensible to me because while I am working, I have the book right next to me with pages open, going along at the pace where it sinks in. I don't think a DVD could do any better of a job and I would still be here seeking clarification on points that were not quite understood.
