Navigate timeline with timecode question

Hello all...
I'm an Avid user looking at Premiere for certain projects.  Last night as I was watching a tutorial the tutorialist selected the timeline panel (clicked inside of it) and then entered a timecode, which automatically selected the timecode display in that panel, he then hit enter and the CTI jumped to the time code.
He said that it was not necessary to select the timecode display.  He also did this several times.  He was using CS5...I have CS5.5.
It does not work for me.  It would be very good if it did.  I like to use the mouse as little as possible.
Does anyone have any further information on this feature?  Does it actually work?  Was it only CS5?
Thank you.
Joe

Are you saying that you highlight the timecode or just the timeline panel?  Sounds to me like you're saying the tc itself.  Because if I click on the tc itself, I can type timecode in there as well.  What I'm talking about is:
Say you're working in the timeline panel (therefore it is selected - just the panel), and you just start typing numbers (ie, timecode that you'd like to jump to)...does that do it for you?  In this tutorial, he said that it wasn't necessary to highlight the tc istelf.  Just as long as the panel is selected.  And he did it several times.  Though it may have been through the magic of editing.  It's a Lynda.com video titled "0203 Understanding timecode"...at 2:13 of the video he does it for the first time...for anyone who might have that tutorial series.
I actually think that I should upload the video to youtube to demo that I'm not crazy.
I just checked youtube and I don't have to upload it, someone else has.
Check out starting from around 2:10 ...

  • Navigate Timeline with keyboard

    Curious if anyone knows how to navigate through clips in the timeline?
    I know "v" will select the nearest edit, then I can hit enter and open that clip in the viewer. But I'd like to be able to establish a focus on a clip and jump forward or back or down. Is there anything like that?
    Thanks in advance.

    basic timeline navigation is handled through industry standard NLE transport controls ...
    J = play backwards, double tap it and you will play backward at 2x speed, triple tap and faster still etc
    K = pause
    L = play forward, double tap it and you will play forward at 2x speed, triple tap and faster still etc
    press J and K together and you will play slowmo backward
    press L and K together and you will play slowmo forward
    press K whilst tapping J will jog backward one frame ... same as tapping the back arrow key
    press K whilst tapping L will jog forward one frame ... same as tapping the forward arrow key
    press the up arrow key will move the playhead to the previous edit point
    press the down arrow key will move the playhead to the next edit point
    there are loads more of these basic transport controls, look under the Mark menu > Previous and Next for more examples
    if your goal is to have the clip load into the viewer then consider using the Playhead Sync mode to Open (View menu > Playhead Sync > Open) as that mode automatically opens in the Viewer window whichever clip is currently under the timeline playhead

  • Dvd with timecode

    hi there,
    I would like to wish everybody a happy new year to start with.
    And now my question.
    My client wishes to look at a dvd, which contains all the video we have made during two days of filming.
    He will descide what sequences are going to be used and which are not.
    I therefore have to deliver a dvd which shows the timecode.
    My client can write down the timecode, which makes it easier to find the corresponding frames.
    What is the best way to get the timecode into the picture.
    Do I have to use Final Cut or DVD pro?
    Thanks in advance

    Happy new year Thijs
    This is a standart routine. I use it on all my approval DVD's before the final edit. its accomplished using one of the video filters
    In the browser, navigate to the timecode reader and double click to open the filter's panel:
    Browser > effects > video filters > video > Timecode Reader
    select all the clips in the timeline and drag and drop the Timecode Reader filter on to the selected clips
    the timcode reader window now shows the original code for each clip
    if needed, you can go back and change the position colour and size of the reader window in the filter control panel
    now create your DVD in DVDSP

  • Is there any way to export 2.35 Anamorphic source to a 16x9 letterboxed frame WITH timecode or text overlays?

    I have been trying to export temp cuts of an anamorphic project (2.35:1) in a letterboxed 16:9 frame with timecode and text overlays and other Additional Video Effects. Converting the 2.35 to 16x9 has been a breeze with the Preserve Aspect Ratio option in Cropping & Padding . The problem is that the black bars that that puts in the 16:9 frame appear OVER any of the Additional Video Effects, thus covering them up.
    E.g. if I select a Text Overlay and place it in the Center, I can see it just fine. But if I want it Upper Left, Title Safe, it is covered by the black space of the Letterboxing. So the Additional Video Effects are getting added, they are just getting covered by the letterboxing. You can even see the very edge of the text in the Title Safe position, peeking out from behind the letterboxing, which is, of course, frustrating .
    Thus far it's been a two-step process: letterbox the anamorphic source, then add TC and other video effects in a second job.
    So - is there any way to do this in ONE step? It would really help my anamorphic workflow.
    (apologies for the lengthy question.)
    [I'm using FCPX 10.1.3 & Compressor 4.1.3, in OSX 10.9.5 on Retina MBP, Late 2013, w/  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB]

    Thanks for the reply Russ.
    Yes, I've considered adding titles and/or generators in the FCPX storyline, but this creates a need to render the entire timeline. As I'm juggling library locations and hard drive spaces I just didn't want to add a new render that will occupy a lot of space. It's also a bit of visual clultter for me, so my goal is to find the best workflow for adding this stuff on or after export.

  • How can I sync free-run clips to a timeline by timecode?

    I shoot weddings with multiple cameras.  For shooting a lot of the pre-ceremony and reception footage, I have the ability to jam the cameras so that they have the same free-run timecode.  So, as the day goes on I am recording some shots with CAM A and my other camera operator is recording shots elsewhere with CAM B.  Naturally, at times both cameras are shooting simultaneously and from time-to-time we are shooting the same stuff from different angles.  But, being a wedding it is impossible to slap a slate every time we want to sync up shots.  So, I'm looking for an easy way to sync all of the shots from the day using the timecode.
    I think this would work best, if someone knows a way to do it:
    Let's just assume that CAM A shoots the first shot of the day.  What I'd like to be able to do is create a timeline with the same start time as the first clip from CAM A, drop all of the clips from CAM A onto one track and be able to line up the clips by their timecode to the timeline's timecode. Then, do the same for all of CAM B's clips on Track 2.  So, I would end up with 2 tracks, CAM A's clips on Track 1, CAM B's clips on Track 2 and gaps when neither camera was shooting.
    I know I could choose all of CAM A's clips and make a multi-camera sequence by timecode which would add the gaps between the clips, but this also puts each clip on a different track.  It's also very difficult to then try and line up CAM B's clips with CAM A's.  There is a way to do it by nesting the multi-cam sequences, but it's way too complex and doesn't make for easy editing since you can't see the individual clips.
    The only way I've figured out to achieve what I'm wanting to do is to make a timeline that has the same start time as CAM A's first clip and manually drop each clip, one-by-one, onto the timeline using its start timecode as my reference.  As you can imagine, with several hundred clips per camera, this is very time-consuming.
    If anyone knows a better way to achieve what I'm looking for, please let me know.
    Thanks!

     Even with that feature, though, you'd end up with an eight hour sequence.
    That's true, but I could take out the gaps pretty easily.  Plus, I usually separate the day into sections anyway, such as Pre-Ceremony, Post-Ceremony, Reception, etc.
    Jim Simon wrote:
     It'd be a better feature request, I think, if you could designate selected clips as Camera 1, then other clips as Camera 2, etc.  Then have PP create a sequence with all timecodes synced to each other, each camera's clips on their corresponding track.  This would eliminate gaps where nothing was shot, which you'd get a lot of syncing the cams to a sequence timecode.
    That's true, but beggars can't be choosers and I'd be happy just being able to sync clips to the timeline by timecode.  I did submit the feature request though.  Thanks for the link!

    HI,
    From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Appearance tab. Tick the box next to: Display images when the page opens.
    If that box is already ticked, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
    From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still have problems loading images, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
    Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
    Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
    If you still have problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • How to create a Random Timeline with checks?

    I have a simple multiple question quiz with 100 questions.
    I want the questions to be randomly asked, without repea
    ting a questions as the end works on a scoring system out of the 100 so it needs to ask
    all the questions.
    Question one starts on frame 5 of the timeline and the last question is on frame 105.
    Can someone please assist on how to write this script with the checks?

    I do apologise, it was not my intent. I thought that if you s
    aw the file you would understand the problem. I love trying to sort
    things out myself and am on the brink of a breakthrough however??
    The problem is and I will explain with the short version I am trying out first.
    Frame 1 is the welcome screen and has a start button to start the quiz.
    Frame 2 the quiz starts and is a multiple answer quiz with 3 answer option only one being correct with the score++ I have on the actions tab the script you sent me of:
    // begin code
    // the for-loop populates frameA with numbers 5,6,...,105
    var frameA:Array = [];
    for(var i:Number=5;i<=105;i++){
    frameA.push(i);
    // the shuffle() function randomizes the contents of frameA
    shuffle(frameA);
    function shuffle(a:Array):Array {
        var len:Number = a.length-1;
        for (var ivar:Number = len; ivar>=0; ivar--) {
            var p:Number = Math.floor(Math.random()*(ivar+1));
            var t = a[ivar];
            a[ivar] = a[p];
            a[p] = t;
        return a;
    // end code
    Each answer is a button and has the gotoAndStop(frameA[0]); script on them:
    The next frame is the next question and has the 3 buttons as well with the following script: gotoAndStop(frameA[1]);
    and then so on till frame 6 with the following script on the 3 buttons: gotoAndStop(frameA[5]);
    It does randomize the questions but seems to repeat questions and does not end up in frame 7 when all questions completed, I assumed with the check it would automatically go to the next frame but am now thinking I need a script to tell it that on completion it needs to go to frame 7.
    Frame 7 basically does the math of the score++ and gives a total.
    I do hope you can assit and once again do apologies.
    Thanks.

  • .srt or .sub export with timecode

    How to produce an .srt or .sub original to use the text with timecode as a base material for language versions?

    I have not used Final Cut Pro X.  You might look in the Final Cut Pro X manual, search or perhaps post a question in the Final Cut Pro Discussions.
    However, based on what I have read about Final Cut Pro X to date, I doubt that the current version supports .sub/.srt exports.

  • How do I synchronize with timecode?

    Hey guys,
    I've got video with timecode and audio with timecode but I don't know how to synchronize them automatically. The video doesn't have audio. When I select the two files and click automatic synchronization it won't do the job. Does anyone know how to do this?

    Put a marker at some TC number on the audio. Do the same on the video to the matching TC number. Right-click on the video and use open in timeline. Drag the audio into the timeline and line up the markers.

  • On start up i get a folder with a question

    When I turn on my I mac it makes a noise and goes to a white screen.  After a few seconds a folder with a question mark on it will flash off and on.
    How do i reboot.  I have unpluged for a minute then tried again and still get the same folder with a question.  If anyone can help please.

    It is possible your system has forgotten where the startup volume is or the HD may have crashed. You can easily tell by holding down the Option Key when you hear the startup tone, if it shows your internal HD, choose it and boot. Then navigate to System Preferences - Startup Disk and choose the internal HD and restart to test. If the internal HD cannot be seen then choose the Recovery Volume (must be running Lion or Mt. Lion) and open Disk Utility and see if your internal HD can be repaired. If it cannot (you will know about 2-3 passes of running Repair DIsk then it's off to the Apple Store or AASP you go for a HD replacement.

  • I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help?

    I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • White Macbook has folder with a question mark inside when powered on.

    My brother has a white macbook given to him from a friend and when it is powered on it shows a folder icon with a question mark in the inside flashing and it doesn't boot. He has sent me on a quest to get a power adapter and a new hard drive, He thinks the hard drive is fried. Does anyone know for sure if thats the case, I just don't want to buy all that stuff to figure out that the logic board is dead or something else irreplaceable. There is no backup disks, all I have is a replacement leopard disk from apple used for my mac mini.

    If it is a retail Leopard disc--black with a giant purple X on it--then yes, you could use them, with a couple of caveats. One, it would technically be a violation of the license to use that install of Leopard on more than one computer, and terms of use on this forum forbid me from encouraging such an action. And two, depending on how old this used MacBook is, your install of Leopard may pre-date manufacture of the MacBook and, as a result, not be able to boot the MacBook anyway. However, judging by the info in your signature, that is probably not a problem.
    If the disc for your Mini is gray and shipped with or was meant to ship with the Mini, then no, the disc will not work.
    I still encourage you to get the system discs that came with the MacBook originally, as they have the Apple Hardware Test included, and, as I suggested above, running any OS (or other Apple software) on a Mac without the discs means technically it's an unlicensed copy.

  • When I boot up my I get a grey screen with a flashing folder with a question mark

    I was trying to set up a bootable Linux flash drive for another computer using UNetbootin and I accidentally selected an empty partition on my hard drive instead of the USB I was trying to use. It went through the install process, and I didn't realize it was on my computer rather than the USB. The computer worked fine, so I thought nothing of it.
    Today, I go to mess with my computer and it is frozen at the login screen. I restart it, and now I just get a blinking folder with a question mark. I try to go into recovery, but it isn't there. Internet Recovery works fine, but when I go to use Disk Utility or to reinstall the OS it cannot find the internal Hard Disk.
    What am I supposed to do here? I don't want to lose all my data.

    You can contact AppleCare to buy a replacement set of the oringinal Install discs for a nominal cost. You will need the serial number and a credit card to place the order.

  • So i have a 2011 MacBook Pro and when i turned it on this morning a flashing folder came on with a question mark in the middle of it and it keeps flashing. So i tried googling any solutions and up so far nothing has worked. Please Help ?

    I tried googling several solutions, but so far nothing seems to work. Everytime i start up my laptop i press CMND+R to make it go to the repair disk utility but instead it takes me as if i have to install lion when i had Snow Leopard 10.6.8. When i do go to the repair disk utility, on the eft hand side shows two hardrives one is Untitled and another is Hitachi, i tried downloading snow leopard 10.6.8 onto a Re-writable disc  using my windows computer. When i insterted it onto the disc drive it came out under SUPER DRIVE and everytime i double click on the CD it says something about attaching images/ I also forgot to mention that the MAC OSX 10.6.8 Update shows on the left hand side on the bottom in DMG format. I dont know what else to do, please help?

    This is the firmware telling you it can't find a bootable OS X volume.
    Usually to solve this all you do is hold the option key down on the built in keyboard while booting the computer, this enters Startup Manager and then you choose OS X to boot, then in System Preferences > Startup Disk you change it to the boot volume and it tells the firmware.
    Everytime i start up my laptop i press CMND+R to make it go to the repair disk utility but instead it takes me as if i have to install lion when i had Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    What you have is a 10.7 or 10.8 Recovery HD from when 10.7 or 10. was on the machine previously.
    The Macintosh HD partition only was erased and 10.6 installed on it, without erasing the entire drive like what should have occured to remove the Recovery HD partition.
    So you have a mucked up machine.
    i tried downloading snow leopard 10.6.8 onto a Re-writable disc  using my windows computer.
    Well there goes your problem there, your downloading illegal copies of Snow Leopard from a untrusted location.
    10.6 is not available for download, except from pirate sites. You likely have malware or a compromised system.
    I dont know what else to do, please help?
    What you need to do is call Apple via phone, tell them the make of your machine and order the appropriate 10.6 disks, they are inexpensive now. Some machines that came with 10.6.3+ origianlly need machine specific disks, other wise pre-10.6.3 Intel Macs can use the 10.6.3 white retail disks.
    Once you have the disks, you need to backup your personal information off the computer to a external storage drive using the emergency quick copy method, then disconnect it to prevent mistakes.
    Most commonly used backup methods
    Next follow this proceedure and make sure to select the ENTIRE drive on the far left with the drive makers name and size, this will erase the entire drive, then install 10.6 from the disk
    How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
    When finished setup the machine and log onto the Internet and use Software Update to get current on 10.6.8
    Don't use pirated software, it's likely been compromised in some fashion.

    Since upgrading to Mavericks, 10.9.1, pictures that come attached to emails no longer display.  There is only a blank space that after about 1 minute, has a small box with a question mark.  Double clicking on the box will open the image in a separate window.  It's very slow and tedious for multiple images.  How can I go back to attached and displayed  images?  If I click on "Forward", the images appear instantly in the email to be forwarded.

    Scott,
    My problem seemed to fix itself.  Or, by shutting down the computer one night, instead of putting it to sleep, may have reset something.  Since updating to Mavericks, I always (or usually) let the computer sleep overnight or anytime I'm walking away from it.  A few days ago, I was updating notes for my kids about how to find all my stuff and how to turn on my computer, so I wanted to rewrite the start-up procedures for the iMac, just in case they ever need to.  Well, I shut it down one night so the following morning, I could write down each step.  Lo and behold, the images, etc. are all there again!  Solved, but I'm not sure why.
