Navigate to Pictures in Library - File Attach

Navigating to a picture in my iphoto 08 (7.1.5) library...
In order to attach a photo into a Gmail or Facebook message, I get the dialog box that would ordinarily allow navigation to a folder and file (documents, ppt, xls, etc.). When I try to navigate to a picture to attach it, I want to be able to navigate to another users iphoto library (read & write permitted) but the navigatoion in the dialog stops at the library level. The only way that I can find and attach pictures is with the "Media / Photos" on the left panel of the dialog box, which means I have to attach the other iphoto library for that single instance of attaching the photo in the other library.
Is there a leaner way to navigate to a picture in another users library?

). When I try to navigate to a picture to attach it, I want to be able to navigate to another users iphoto library (read & write permitted) but the navigatoion in the dialog stops at the library level.
Simply, you cannot do it unless the you first open that Library with your iPhoto.

You can see that it does decide that it needs to be backed up (hence 70 GB of data) then it only backs up everything else. It will now do this every time.
Notes: This machine is running Mac OS X server and I do not have my home directory on my system drive. It could be a permissions problem, but I have tried fixing that (see below)
Since this problem started I have tried:
    - Erasing my Time Machine disk and letting it do a full backup
    - Holding down option-command while opening iPhoto and having it do all possible rebuilding steps
    - Using Terminal to make sure permissions of the main file and package contents are set to same setup as my other computers that are working

I moved it to my system drive, was able to open it up fine with iPhoto ('09 BTW) and then ran Time Machine. Same thing happened, though this time it didn't say "needs deep traversal" like it did before.
As far as exclusions go, I double checked my "Do not back up" list and nothing in there that has to do with Pictures or iPhoto. Also, found and ran this command:
    sudo mdfind "comapple_backupexcludeItem = 'com.apple.backupd'"
    which output:
    /{home}/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    /{home}/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.xml
    /{home}/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    /{home}/Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries/Previous iTunes Libraries/Previous iTunes Libraries/iTunes Library 2008-10-04.xml
    /{home}/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Cache
So that probably isn't it. It is weird that out of the 1.5 TB of data Time Machine backs up, it is only this file (folder)

  • No thumbnails visible when doing file attach or insert picture from file

    Hi,
Running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) on a MacBook Pro, I don't see image thumbnails when doing a file attach (or other similar "browse" dialog).
I do see image thumbnails when changing the desktop background (until I go to Choose Folder) but not when doing tasks like these:
-- File attach, such as when I'm sending a picture of my kitty cat (using Gmail from either Firefox of Safari).
-- In Word for Mac: 2004, the Insert Picture dialog (the final dialog box is titles "Choose a Picture").
-- In Pages '08, the Insert, Choose dialog.
It there a solution short of firing up VMWare Fusion and doing this from <ack!> Windows?
I've looked around a fair amount but not found an answer.

    HI Bob,
In GMail, when you navigate to your images folder, it will be in a Finder window. Make sure your Finder window preferences are set to "Columns". Open a Finder window. In the Toolbar, there is one set with 3 different options... List, Columns, or Icons... choose Columns. When you go to select an image, you should be able to see the thumbnail version in the contextual menu that expands to the right.

Trying to export RAW originals from Aperature 3 to LightRoom 4: I choose File>Export>Originals. Then Pictures>LR. But then I can't find files in LR library.Files seem stuck in Pictures as NEF and or DNG files. I know Im stuck on something dumb but I am stuck. Help?

You now need to import those files into Lightroom.
BTW, Lightroom uses a "referenced" system so your images will always be in the folders you download/copy them to. Lightroom is a database first and foremost, albeit with non-destructive editing capabilities (effectively Adobe Camera Raw).

  • Remove path when attach library file

What is the impact if I don remove the path when I attach the library file ? Pls advise. Thanks.

Ideally you should include the path where you have placed the library in FORMS60_PATH and remove path while attaching it.This ensures that forms automatically picks up your library file.
Hence the path is not hardcoded and you don't have to change the forms code.If you don't remove path, you may face problem when you run your code in a different machine.

  • Moved iPhoto 11 library to external drive and have a iPhoto Library file left on desktop

    Hello,
I have a blue file on my desktop labeled iPhoto Library, that appeared during the course of me moving my  iPhoto Library ( iPhoto 11) to an external hard drive to make room on the internal disk, my attempts to reopen iPhoto on the internal disk,  move selected photos from the iPhoto Library on the external drive over to the newly emptied iPhoto Library on my laptop.
The blue iPhoto Library file contains these items:
    AlbumData.xml
    AlbumData2.xml
    iPhoto.ipspot
Questions: does this blue file belong somewhere or can I trash it?
    This is what I did:
    1. I opened Pictures, dragged the iPhoto Library from there to the external drive.
    2. When I opened iPhoto on my MBP it said it needed a library to open with and the choices already in the box were:
    iPhoto Library(default)
    iPhoto Library
    3. I chose "iPhoto Library" because I thought "(default)" meant restoring the original library.
    4. iPhoto opened to the "get started with iPhoto" like a new install.
5.I moved (drag and drop ) some photos from the external drive back into the "empty" iPhoto Library. I tried to move a group of photos but I didn't know how to do it so ...
    6. I took the iPhoto Library from the trash and put it back into the "empty" iPhoto Library.
    7. I tried to delete all the photos except the ones I wanted to keep in the internal iPhoto Library. I couldn't do it so....
    8. I closed iPhoto, went back into Pictures and trashed the internal iPhoto Library again.
    9. Reopened iPhoto and it needed a library to open with and I think I clicked
    iPhoto Library (default)
    10. When I opened iPhoto this time, it was the "get started with iPhoto" but the original photo albums and labels listed but all empty.
That's what I remember so far.
    Hope you can help.

It appears you created a new library.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select "Choose Library".
Navigate to the library on the external hard drive and select it.  Once you're satisfied that it's the one you want you can delete that folder from your desktop.

  • No Photos visible but 56GB library file

I have a very large iphoto library 56GB with 20000+ photos and various albums. I have moved it to an external drive which has been working fabulously until now.
When I open the library it showed no photos, events or albums. Upon checking the size of the iphoto library it showed it was still 56GB in size but no photos!
I have tried deleting the cache file, preferences plist, etc.
I have gone to a backup copy of iphoto from TimeMachine.
I have opened a new library and it works fine.
I have also upgraded to iLife9.0 but still no joy.
Any ideas how I can recover the photos that appear to be hiding in the library file.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Make a temporary backup the library and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the options #1, #2 and #6.
If that doesn't help rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Images not in "~/Pictures/iPhoto Library" folder not properly handled

One of the features I was grateful for in iPhoto 6 is the ability to NOT import photos into the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library" folder. This meant I could use iPhoto to view and edit photos without duplicating a folder structure I use for my photo files.
Unfortunately, I have now discovered that any program that attempts to access photos through the iPhoto API can see the previews for these images, but can not actually access the images. This means the "Desktop & Screen Saver PrefPane" can see the iPhoto previews, but fails to load an image for the Desktop (or Screen Saver). NOTE: It does appear that iMovie does see the photos properly, but other non-iLife portions of the MacOS don't.
Anyone got a fix for this? I suspect it is a bug in the iPhoto sharing API, but I am hoping someone might have a fix.

I don't think there is an API for iPhoto, or at least I cannot find it anywhere. Any integration with iPhoto is purely a hack.
If you can find documentation for an API, please let me know.

  • "The iTunes Library file cannot be found or created..."

I'm getting this error upon opening iTunes:
When I try to open iTunes with the option key, it asks me to find a library. I can navigate to my library and see the file, but it is grayed out and can't be selected. Prior to this i had been getting an error about iTunes not being able to save the library, but I thought it was coming from my backup app.
Any ideas? I can no longer open iTunes or access my music or videos.
    Thanks!

OK.. I finally found an answer buried among a million other posts.
To fix this, click to open the iTunes app and immediately hold down the "Option" key.  This will allow you to either create a new iTunes library file, or point the app to where the library is.  In my case, I repointed it to the Music>iTunes folder where my library file was and this worked.
This is the link that helped me figure it out:

  • Is it possible to copy my system library files to a different boot instal?

this is somewhat a odd and vague question in the title but to make a long story short[er]
i upgrade installed from 10.4.9 to leopard and was not too happy with the performance i got afterwards with different functions and apps.things worked funny or crashed randomly. i made a back up bootable partition and installed fresh a non upgrade leopard and have noticed ithings actually look different [file and folder trees, some minor graphics things] but also things that did not work for me in my main boot are working in this fresh boot [tablet and other 3rd party things]
now my everyday work and life machine is the main bootable but its driving me crazy the way a lot of stuff doesnt work as well as the fresh boot.
    so my question is this:
is it possible to make a fresh boot and bring over specific things from my main boot so i can have the best of both worlds?
before you answer, i DO know how to copy over my email and settings and i know how the file tree for pictures and music works.
this question is more about programs and preferences and things i dont know about in the /lib and /system folders. i dont want to have to install everything all over again but i have a feeling if i just drag over the app to the correct folder its not going to work right.
and the reason i dont think copying everything over or cloning it would be a good idea is because i would run into the same issues im having now. i have had this machine for years and im trying to delete items and applications i dont use anymore to try and isolate any issues i have with the OS but it just makes sense to try and move over the few items i DO use to a fresh install that DOES work right.
so i would just like to know how to isolate apps and items and then be able to import everything associated with that app or item to get it to work as i want it.
    any help would be amazing

Select a broken track, press CTRL+I to Get Info, say no when asked to locate it, look on the summary tab for the expected location. Where is that same track really? Comparing the two paths it should be clear what needs to be moved where.
Assuming you set \\Nas\Music\iTunes as the <Media Folder> and let iTunes "Keep organized" it will have shifted all of the content folders one level from \\Nas\MusiciTunes\iTunes Media\... up to \\Nas\Music\iTunes\... If you move everything except the library files, Album Artwork & Previous iTunes Libraries folder down a layer again it should all click back into place.
If not I have a broken link repair tool we can throw at the problem.

  • Definitive Word On ID3 Tags, Library Files & Which Data Is Stored Where...

I have spent a few hours just now (and have read the discussions a lot previously) on various iTunes issues, namely ones pertaining to organization and storage of data & info. I still have quite a few questions I would like the definitive answers for. If anyone knows for sure, thanks in advance for your response!
    1) Is there any difference between how and where iTunes stores data for audio (mp3, m4a, aif, etc.) files vs. movie (mpg, mp4, mov) files, and if so, what are they?
    2) In the info tabs/panes of tracks in iTunes, is the entered data stored in separate places? i.e., the info under the INFO pane stored in the individual media file itself while that in the OPTIONS pane stored in the main library file? Also, did I read correctly that Convert ID3 Tags causes more of the library file data to be embedded in the media file itself? (Not desirable of course, because each play would in effect "modify" the file as if it had changed and needed to be resynched, since play count is part of the data).
    3) Is there a difference between where editable data (artist, title, equalizer setting, genre, rating, etc.) is stored vs uneditable data such as play count, date added, last played, etc.?
    4) Is there a list somewhere online that shows what data is stored in the library file (settings unique to the iTunes) and what is universally in the standard ID3 tag in the media file itself?
    5) Is it safe to assume that rating, equalizer, volume, remember position and start/stop time settings for each individual track are not in the ID3 tag but only in the library file? If so, one can then assume that merely copying the library file will preserve these settings?
    6) Are ID3 tags applied and applicable to movie and audio files similarly, and do they further differ how & if they are used among each file type (mp3, m4a, aif, wav, mpg, mp4, mov, etc.)? I know with movies you cannot set or change the poster frame in mpg (muxed) files, for example.
    7) I do all my iTunes importing, editing, managment, etc. on my PowerMac desktop, with the prefs, library and xml files stored in my home folder on the PowerMac's OS drive and the large media files store on an attached ext. 500 GB FW drive. If I use a synching program to continuously keep the library/xml files the same on my iBook laptop's home folder and the media files the same on another ext. 160 GB FW drive, then when I use the iBook with the 160 GB at different events it should operate exactly the same a when using my PowerMac at home with the 500 GB? The only thing I should have to change is the location of the iTunes folder in the Prefs on the iBook to point to the 160 GB, right?
    8) Finally, now that iTunes 7 allows you to indicate sort order ("The Beatles" can now appear under "B" without writing "Beatles, The" as I have been) would it retain that sort when importing the song list into other database programs or even an iPod, or would it default back to "T"? (AppleWorks database has a similar feature where you can specify an ARTIST field which sorts by first letter of last word, but won't stay that way in other programs).
PHEW! ...long post I know, but I spent a lot of time reading and hopefully over time I can get the answers to most (or even all) of these questions. Thanks!!!
PowerMac G4/500 MHz (1 GB); iBook G4/1.33 GHz (1.5 GB)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   (still using 10.3.9 Panther on PowerMac)

I read this on the ID3 site:
ID3 tags were designed with the MP3 file format in mind. ID3v2 tags will break formats which are container-based such as Ogg Vorbis and WMA. Here is some information on specific formats:
ID3 tags work in MP3 and MP3pro files
    WAV has no tags
WMA has its own tagging format, which is specified in the wma spec, available in the MSDN (which unfortunately, basically does not allow Open Source implementations)
Ogg Vorbis uses "Xiph Comments" (same as later versions of FLAC and Speex), which are embedded into the Ogg container. You can find information on these in the comment and container specs on www.xiph.org
AAC uses yet another tagging format, which does not at present have a published spec as of 3/1/2006.
So since I rip in AAC, does that mean the tags work differently, are stored differently or offer different editable info? Also, I found nothing regarding tags for video files as I mentioned in my question. Within iTunes I am assuming all the information you may edit or view when you Get Info for each file is not all stored together: some is in the file's ID3 tag and others in the iTunes Library file. I guess you are always safe if you keep back-ups of your media files and library files, even if you don't always know which info resides where.
I found a complete list of frames (fields) that are available in ID3v2 at the following link, many not available in iTunes, but the site lists other apps that allow you to edit tags for both Mac & Windows.
    http://www.id3.org/Frames
I am curious, if you use another app to edit the tag with a frame not offered in iTunes, will it still work in iTunes (like if you use the frame for synchronized lyrics; since it is part of the tag itself will they show up when played in iTunes even though not editable in iTunes)?

  • ITunes Library File Size Limit?

I've been struggling to get my AppleTV to work as advertised since I bought it on the day it was originally released. I'm a big music fan and wanted to use it mostly as a music device. My iTunes library is huge. I have my entire CD collection ripped in lossless, as well as AAC for my iPod. I also have lots of other music, some DTS audio files, etc... and very detailed organization.
At any rate, I could always get the AppleTV to work if I just set it up to sync and play the files locally, but never to properly stream in a manner that's useable. And any syncing would take FOREVER. I'm on an N network, and I was getting speeds around 100KB/second. And then after it finally would get setup, I would often get pauses up to a minute where the AppleTV would freeze between menus while "thinking". It would take me 5 minutes just to navigate to a song and start playing it.
I tried all sorts of troubleshooting. Test libraries always worked fine. I've rebuilt my iTunes library from scratch, suspecting a corrupt library file, even though there was no other evidence to support this theory. No dice.
I'm finally giving up, and deciding that AppleTV has a limit to how large an iTunes library file it can handle. My iTunes library file is 160MB. Just the library file. You figure it's only got 256MB of RAM, and it's no wonder it can't handle it. I'm not sure how large the AppleTV OS is, but I suspect with a library file that large that the ATV has to do lots of going back to the HD to retrieve information it just doesn't have enough room for in RAM.
So my new strategy is to set up a secondary iTunes library just for my AppleTV that contains just music I want to sync, and any video I may want to stream. If I want to stream video, I'll launch this new library. If I want to listen to music without my computer on, the AppleTV will have a selection on it from this new library. If I want to stream my huge library, well, now I can use my iPhone as a remote to control my large iTunes library, and use the AppleTV with airtunes feature. And this works wonderfully, 100% responsive with no "waiting".
At any rate, I'm very disappointed that I couldn't get the AppleTV to work as advertised. I wish Apple would specify that there's a limit to how large a library it can handle. I've been screwing around with this for a long time and am essentially giving up, although the iPhone remote / airtunes solution works well for me.
Maybe down the road they'll come out with a new hardware revision with more RAM that can handle things better.

Well, I was hoping I could send you a private message, Greg Neil, because I don't know if you'll ever see this message. Regardless, your iTunes library is NOT the problem no matter what others have told you. 7000 files it's child's play. My iTunes library currently has 14,639 music files in it and 129 Movies ripped at 3000kbps. The library size is NOT the problem. If your network is slow then that will be what is hurting you. The second fastest behind 'n' (i always forget this bit of trivia) should be fast enough for streaming music and most movies. I know that because I've done it. Having said that, go out and buy a bit of ethernet cable and hook it directly into your machine and see if you can stream that way. If you can't then you need to take back your aTV because, in that case, it's the problem. If your network is of adequate speed per what I and the previous poster have mentioned and it still won't stream at all wirelessly then TAKE IT BACK. Mine has streamed fine in the past however, I eventually just hardwired it via ethernet to prevent any drops ever. Hope this helps. I just wanted you to know that going to that amount of trouble to make it work should not have been necessary, and btw, aTV running all your favorite music to your home stereo is worth the price of the device itself. You shouldn't have to suffer.
    All the best,
    A fellow music lover

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.
