Navigating the support communities is difficult

Am I overthinking things?
For example, I want to read various threads about the iPhone 6 Plus. I navigate to that specific community and read the first thread that interests me. Now, I want to go back to the 6 Plus community and read more threads but I have no option to do so from the current thread I'm in. Instead I have to go back to the root level of the iPhone Hardware community and then click to scroll over until I can select the iPhone Plus community. Clicking back does no good either.
I also would like a quick way to read the first unread message in a thread, is that possible?

You can get the old format of the forums back!
Use the tips explained here:
Adjust the format and layout of ASC Web Pages
Use the links here.  Save as bookmarks in your browser.
Site map of Communities and Categories
fyi: Here is my work flow...
1) I have a bookmark in FireFox to goto the discussion I have participated in.
see for generic link:  Site map of Communities and Categories
I've modified it to add on the content stuff.  exact link.
https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles/content?filterID=participated
I run with Hiroto's modification to user content.  The only way these forums are readable for me.
Adjust the format and layout of ASC Web Pages
2) I login. ( I know this isn't the optimal way, but ...
3) I may  or may not need to navigate back to my list of participated discussions.  It's depends on the mode of Jive.
4) start auto reload on my list of participated discussions. I've started doing this in the last few days.  Autologout seems to have gotten more aggressive.
5) read and answer my old posts.  I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( way bad that apple eliminated last poster to a thread. )
6) x out of all tabs except original my list of participated discussions.
7) Create a new window for reading my favorite discussions.  I've made FireFox bookmarks for all these.  I've setup firefox to share bookmarks to all my computers.

  • How can I stay on the Support communities with out signing in all the time?

How can I stay on the Support Communities without signing in all the time?
    Thanks

You will be signed out as soon as you quit the browser, or within around 5-10 minutes of closing the window. The only way to stay signed in is to keep a window open all the time, either working in other tabs, or minimizing it and then going on with something else in a new window. It's a pest, but that's the way it is.

  • App for the Support Communities?

These are message boards for smart devices right? So I think it's natural to have an app for these. I have a suggestion that Apple should make an app for this big community. It's so much more conveniant !! (: Thanks for reading

No, no apps for Apple Support Communities. And no rumors of such in development.
The only rumors are changes in the site to make it more smart phone/device friendly. But no apps.

  • Navigating the support site

Can anyone tell me why the support site is so darned hard to find
    things on?
I have been a Novell user for over 10 years. At one time, I was able
to search for products, TIDS, and software with fast results and able
to find what I was looking for.
I am currently looking for the most up to date Imaging CD as has been
recommended in the posts. Now, I may not be the most knowledgeable
Linux guy on the planet - far from it - but I can't see that I'm a
total idiot. What does it take to locate this CD?
I went onto the support.novell.com site. I logged in with my
userid/password. I then went to the search. I searched for Bootcd,
imaging CD, left the search term blank after selecting Zenworks 7 SP1
IR2. I can't seem to find this boot CD anywhere.
I would really like to find this so I can figure out how to get past
this imaging on new hardware. From the posts, I believe I need to
integrate the newest .ko object file from Intel. However, I have no
    way to find out!
Any suggestions on how to get around the site, or the actual url for
the imaging boot CD ISO would be greatly appreciated.
I am currently running ZfD7SP1IR2 on Netware.
    Many thanks.

I wrote most of that TID, that's how ;)
CPKs are part if ZENworks Server Management - compiled Server Software Packages http://www.novell.com/documentation/...a/acwmjjm.html
The beauty is that they contain the files and the logic needed to deploy them.
They can be distributed with ZSM, or manually applied using a standalone processor.
What's useful with CPKs for large installations is that the files can be copied to the remote server, then launched from a remote location. With the winsetup method of applying Zen patches, you need to run the whole thing across the wire, or remote control a machine.
One customer upgraded from ZDM7 to ZDM7SP1 on hundreds of servers in one night.

  • Signing into apple support communities is difficult

When I want to reply to a post on the Apple Support Communitues, I have to first click the "Sign in" button at the top-left of the screen.
This then signs me in and takes me back to the communities homepage, not to the thread I wanted to reply to.
I then have to use my browsers' history (chrome, firefox) to find the page that I wanted to reply to.
At this point, the screen says "Sign in" - it doesn't think I am signed in.
If I refresh, it still says "sign in" as opposed to "logout".
I have to modify the querystring on the page - e.g. add &z=12345 to the end. This then seems to convince the browser and/or apple site to realise that I am in fact logged in and that I can in fact reply. I;ve tried disabling the browsers' cache settings so that it always pulls the latest version - both as via the browsers internal tools, and through a local proxy server like Charles - it does not appear to be a local browser caching issue.
There doesn't seem to be a way for the site to "remember" my login. If I accidentally close the window and then re-open it, I'm logged off again. This is very frustrating.
I have also tried posting images to the community pages using apple's editor but it seems I'm the only one who can see them. What is the point of that?
I have tried using a direct connection (pppoe) to the internet without a router (e.g connecting the ethernet cable to the optical modem) and without a proxy server, just to be sure that it's not my network. I've also reset the browsers, and tried alternative browsers like Safari, Firefox and Chrome.

You run into a bug.  It's nasty. This has always worked for me, but maybe not for you.  I do not use a proxy service.  Seems like it could be a problem. I do not know.
Also is doing that thing where I get stuck in a Login Loop seemingly logged in at the forum root but showing up as logged out when I select a topic.
Here is a potential work-around for this problem in Firefox.
Firefox. You need to clear the web cache.
login from some other browser tab.
edit > preferences > advanced tab > click on clear now
    reload page with login problem.
I believe this "solution" was posted by Hiroto.
It's worked for me.  I've gotten this down pat.

  • Does Apple monitor the Support communities for trolls?

    Hello.
I posted a question regarding adding apps to the App Store:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18763476?ac_cid=op123456#18763476
I got a response, wrote a reply, then a troll by the name of Dah Veed ( https://discussions.apple.com/people/Dah%E2%80%A2veed ) joined in and basically trolled the discussion by offering nothing but insults and childish remarks.
Does Apple actually monitor these forums? It is quite discouraging to see this sort of behavior in this 'community.'
    As per the 'Community Etiquette':
Post only technical support questions and answers, unless otherwise noted.
Be polite, constructive and stay on topic.
I believe this user is not following any sort of etiquette.
    Thank you.

There are moderators here, and as you gain levels here, you also gain the ability to report problem posts.  (At level 1, you don't yet have that ability.)
Although Dah•Veed is normally a helpful contributor, and he is correct that it's extremely unlikely that Apple will ever add the feature you mentioned in that topic, he did nonetheless phrase his responses poorly.  I have brought the matter to the attention of the moderators, who will make the decision about whether his posts stay or go.

  • My iPad 2 is not recognised by iTunes. I have tried all the steps as mentioned by the support communities. I have spent lot of time trying to diagnose the problem but no success yet. I need immediate help. I have my laptop with windows XP.

I have tried all the steps as suggested by the community partners i.e. uninstall/reinstall itunes (number of times). If I plug my ipad 2 on my office PC which has itunes, it is recognised immediately. My lap top does not show 'NEW HARDWARE FOUND" as iPad. It just says new hardware found and shows scanner and camera hardware recognised. In my opinion there could be programme file which is having conflict with ipad 2 recognisation. I am surprised to find that APPLE has not yet come out with straightforward steps for stting up procedures to avoid this recognition issue. It is waste of time and causing lot of aggravation among iPad 2 purchasers.

Sounds like it could be your computer and not Apple. Sounds like some registry issues and/or other underlying problems.
What are your computer specs? Year? Manufacturer? RAM? Processor (type & speed, # of cores), OS (32 bit? 64 bit? Professional? Standard?)

  • What are the privledges for each level of the support communities

do i need to say more?

    Hi:
That is a question I have never had before!
I have been posting on Apple's user-to-user forums for over 10 years.  Before I began trying to help others, I received a good deal of very helpful information from other people. The time I spend varies - depending on what I am doing that day and my own interest level in reading posts (and then trying to suggest approaches to problems).  Since I retired several years ago,  I spend more time here than when I was working.  People who post here are all volunteers - this is not a job for us.
The Level 7 is something new when Apple released the new ASC and re-defined the levels.  In the "old days," I was a L4.  As I recall, it took about five or six years to reach that level.
Points are obtained if the original poster thinks you have helped them (or solved a problem).  The point award is completely voluntary.  In my own experience, I probably get points from every fifth or sixth post I make.  Either I do not give useful advice or the OP is unaware of the point thing - or just not interested.
In summary, we would not do this if we did not genuinely get satisfaction from trying to help other people.  It can be frustrating at times, but mostly more positive than negative.  When I dipped my toes in the water and began trying to use my limited knowledge of Apple computers to help others, I was tentative.  One of the positive things I have personally gotten from reading all these posts is that I have learned a great deal from others over time.
I got wordy...sorry for the windy answer to your question.

  • Why can't I sign into the Support Communities on iOS unless I'm using Chrome?

I'm in Safari, on this website, and I see Welcome, Guest | Sign In in the upper left corner.  I tap Sign In, and get brought to the screen where I enter my ID and Password.  I enter both, and get right back to the Home page, but I am not signed in!  Nothing tells me I entered any information wrong.  What's wrong with Safari?  I am currently typing this on Chrome on my iPod touch.  When I use Safari, I can't sign in.  Any suggestions?

Okay, I had Private Browsing turned on and Cookies off (I'm still kind of learning what Cookies are).  Thanks!

  • Is there any way to stay logged in the Support Communities?

I have to log in Every Time I return.  Even if it has just been an hour or so.
I'm in Safari 5.1 and Lion.

Any interaction with the server for the forum software will reset the logout clock.

  • How can I get up levels in the support communities quicker?

    Just started today.

    Welcome Petercsauer!
Among all the Terms of Use conditions the following is probably the most beneficial for actually helping people solve problems:
Test your answer. When possible, make sure your Submission works on your own computer before you post it.
Bear in mind its other conditions, particularly
    Interference with the Site
Apple may provide a system whereby users acquire points for various activities.
Do not 'game' the system. You agree to not create multiple IDs or otherwise manipulate the points system.
Do not ask for points. If you feel the system is not clear to users, please provide feedback to Apple; do not instruct other users unless they ask.
Only about 10% of people seem to care or know enough to avoid points anyway. Many thoughtful and comprehensive solutions don't even elicit a response, which often happens if all someone wants to do is fix a problem.

  • My deepest thanks to everyone in the Apple Support Communities

I am a 74-year-old newby to the world of Mac. I have always had to use Windows based PCs at work. After I retired, I purchased a beautiful 27" iMac and I realize that until now, I was only working with half a computer. Three times I needed to submit a question to the Support Communities, and I was greaty impressed not only by the speedy responses, but by the friendliness and knowledge of all who helped me. I don't mean to put down Microsoft, but whenever I submitted a question to their groups, IF it got answered, it was always with another question. I was never able to get a direct answer. Also the people were rather snobby and liked to show off how little you knew. I always felt like it was a private clique and I was intruding. Once, I had to call Apple for assistance and I was so impressed by the help and care I was shown. In fact, I received a call the next day as a follow-up. Don't ever try to call Microsoft for assistance. You are told at the start to have your credit card ready.
My deepest thanks to everyone. I love My new mac, and moreover, I love the help and frendliness I have gotten from the Communities. Thanks to all of you.
    Sid

Thank you for your kind reply.
There is a strong user to user community here to assist others with the best interest at heart.
You are told at the start to have your credit card ready.
Same thing occurs with Apple after three months unless you bought the AppleCare (you can buy it up to 1 year after original date of machine purchase) which will then give you three years (from the date of machine purchase) of care and warranty.
Apple is a business and support costs a lot of money in human effort so it's understandable.
I really advise getting AppleCare if you haven't already.
Look over your backup plan options, because everyting can be replaced except your personal files.

  • I need to know how to delete downloaded videos and movies from iTunes when the instructions on the support page does not work.  I have swiped the selections from left to right on the phone and nothing happens.

    Hello.
I need help deleting videos, tv shows, and movies downloaded from itunes.  I have followed the instructions to delete from the macbook, I selected the videos I wanted to delete and right clicked to delete.  Nothing happens.  When I double click on the video it still starts playing.  I also followed the instructions to delete the videos from the iphone by swiping from left to right with nothing happening.  I opened the videos on the ipad and there is no edit selection like in the instructions on the support page. Can you please tell me how to permanently remove this content so it doesn't try to copy from each device when I want to back up the Iphone and Ipad to my macbook.  Thank you.

  • Two Apple IDs, can't log into Support Communities with newest one

Hi, I have an old Apple ID (very old, actually, from the earliest date of being able to have one) and a new Apple ID that I want to use for access to the support community.
Problem: I cannot access the support community with my new ID.
I can access it with my old ID. That's how I accessed the support communities to post this request for help.
    This is what happens:
I go to Support --> Communities
I enter my newer Apple ID
I enter my correct passwordNote - I use this combination on iTunes for purchases all the time. It works. This isn't a password issue.
I then get asked to establish a sceen name.
I enter a name that (finally) hasn't been taken by someone else and click the button at the bottom of the screen, to continue.
An error message returns stating that there is another account using that e-mail address (my newer Apple ID).
I can never get past this error message using my newer Apple ID.
The system won't let me log in using my new Apple ID. It says my new Apple ID - which is a .mac account e-mail - is already used by someone else. But that someone else is me. I'm not trying to replace my new ID, I'm not trying to alter the password on my new Apple ID, I just can't get past the step where the system rejects any and all attempts to create a screen name associated with my newer Apple ID.
Something's messed up. I just want to use my newer Apple ID and pretty much forget about the older one.

    HI,
I have in the past "Created" a Support Communities "Alias" for at least one if not two  @mac.com accounts
I have create a number of @mac.com accounts as "iChat Names" as the @mac.com registration Page advertised them as during the MobileMe period.
I have checked one on the Apple ID page and logged in (I had to change the password first)
It seems the one I checked had only the @mac.com address and no alternative email address.
(I am sure if I used this one in Messages it would cause problems.)
I am sure another required me to set up an alternative email and that required me to remove one of my three external emails from another ID.
I would still use the "Contact iTunes Support" link to see if they can sort it out.

  • How effective is the support? and how much it costs to run a good iphone?

I have an iPhone3, I brought two times to repair spending a considerable sum, the first time they gave me a replacement phone regenerated, but the wi-fi did not work so I had to come back and I really got a third ... also this has never worked well.
Now in my third phone does not work well on touch screens and applications change very slowly and sometimes applications jump brought me back to the menu '. I am very unhappy with this phone and all those who gave me as a replacement. I tried to write to Apple to see if, for the fourth time, I still have to pay for an iPhone that works (another regenerated?) .. But it seems that you have to pay just to talk to someone and ask how much it would cost this new sad task.
Do you have any suggestions? Has anyone had the same problems? Milan Store - Carosello

Jen ~ Welcome to the Support Communities. It's probably not possible to predict the cost before taking it to an Apple Store. Find answers to all your questions about service and repair options, warranty, pricing, and other processes in your country HERE.
