Navigation setting in iPhoto 6

I have just installed iPhoto 6 and was in the edit mode trying out the different effects. A navigation bar appeared that would allow me to adjust the photo into the center of the matt effect. I closed the navigation bar and have not been able to find it since. Anybody know how I can access it again?!!!

Look at the bottom, you will see the zoom in/out slider, as soon as you move it, the navigation will show.

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window

that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:

I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu.

CS3 preference setting in iPhoto

I now have both CS3 and CS2 installed on my iMac. My problem is that I don't know how to set my iPhoto preference settings for CS3. The only external editor choice that I can find in my preference list is for CS2. I would like to be able to edit my photos directly from iPhoto into CS3. Does anyone have any ideas to help me with this frustration?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Just go to that menu in the preferences and select CS2. That will open the navigation window so you can then find CS3 and select it.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. How do I set up iPhoto '11 version 9.2.1 to send emails with medium/Large/actual size? I try sending photos to a publisher and iPhoto automatically shrinks them to about 40 kB. Publisher needs between 0.5 and 7 MB. My ISP has a limit of 12MB

My photos, taken with a common Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 include flora which I send to a publisher.
I am fairly new to my MacBook (Mac S X Version 10.6.8). I have been using it for a year.
I found I could not successfully send Large or Full size photos.
A few days ago I downloaded a new version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11 version 9.2.1).
Again, although I get the option of choosing to send small/medium/large//full size photos, it actually only sends them as "Small" (ie about 40kb) which is useless to publish. If I drag a picture onto the desktop (where my EXIF tells me it is full size) then attach it to an email by dragging, againg the sent email is at "small" size ~40KB).
My ISP (Westnet) tells me that their maximum accepted size is 12 MB.
I suspect that I have failed to set up iPhoto for this purpose. (I am well into retirement but, although geriatric, did study University Physics about half a century ago)

Yes you would have to start over from scratch.
But you should really think this through very carefully. Experienced users do not recommend iPhoto used in this mode, and with very good reasons. Among them
1. It's more work for exactly no gain
2. It's unreliable - especially - when the library is on one volume and the photos are on another. One change to the path between the files and the library and you'll be reconnecting every photo in the Library back to the database, one by one.

If you delete a picture, it sends it to iPhoto trash (left column), there you can permently delete using the empty trash with the icon in the upper right corner. It will come up with a warning if you want tp permently delete trash (photos). It the iPhoto trash you can drag them back out, once you empty the trash, they are gone.
You can also go to finder preferences>advanced, and unclick secyre empty trash, and make sure show warning before empting trash is clicked.

Best way to set up iPhoto; external drive

I want to set up iphoto in a way that steals less of my ssd drive space. I will buy a usb 3 harddrive, where I store my pictures. In iphoto I just want a reference to the picture on my external harddrive. But when working, some times I want to delete pictures; can I do this from iphoto, or will I only delete the reference?

It will only delete the Reference. iPhoto is not the best way. If you want to use iPhoto the best way is to run a Managed Library from the external disk.

How do I set the iPhoto library as the Aperture default library?

I missed the opportunity on first opening Aperture to set the iPhoto library as the one that Aperture uses as the default, and now cannot find out how to do that after that point (it was getting late by the time I had found, installed and updated a copy of Aperture for my Mavericks based system).
How can I set the iPhoto library as the default, I don't want to have to select the iPhoto library every time I open aperture, but even knowing how to do that would be an improvement on my current knowledge!

That's what I read, but aren't they the minimum specs? Do you know what the upper specs are for using them together? Eg 3.4.5 won't work with iPhoto x.x etc?
I bought a Retail copy of Aperture 3.0.2 then downloaded the latest Maverick copy of Aperture I could as an upgrade (3.4.5) from the Apple Support site. But there was a newer version 3.5.1 which will also run on Mavericks, but is not currently available either as a retail copy or as an electronic download as Apple will only sell 3.6 now as Yosemite came out a few weeks ago. I really don't want to get Yosemite as then I won't be able to run Filemaker 11 at home for the office. And I can only upgrade Filemaker by getting a whole new set of licences for all the other computers in the office, costing about €2,000 altogether. Then I will have to buy two new Apple Mac minis costing another €1,000. And there are potential issues with other software that I will have to "up"grade to including iWork's watered down products. Wherever I look, Apple is making my life difficult.

Help setting up iPhoto to publish with Flickr

Please tell me what i am doing wrong. I am trying to get iPhoto to publish to Flickr. I chose my photo, a drop down message appears at the top of the screen saying "Do you want to set up iPhoto to publish to Flickr?" I click Setup and it takes me to Yahoo/Flickr sign in page on the web. I confirm my username & password and I am taken to Flickrs home page. I know I can upload photos here but I want to do it direct from iPhoto but every time I click on the Flickr button I have to repeat the above all over again. Please can someone help me??

Did you check the box to stay signed in for two weeks?
What I see is select photo(s), click on Flickr and I go to a Flickr web page where I sing in and tell it to keep me signed in and I get a new web page asking me if I want to allow iPhoto to upload - I say yes and it goes to a page telling me that I can change this - I close that page and go back to iPhoto in the dock and click on the still open box to upload to Flickr and it works without having to go to the Flickr page again

Folder set as iPhoto library?

I've managed, somehow, to set my users folder as an iPhoto Library!
If I'm logged on, I still get the Home style icon, but using Get Info I can see that "Kind" is set to "iPhoto Library".
Can anyone tell me how to set this back to being a folder please?

As was the case there, it may be that the "bundle-bit" for your Home folder has been mistakenly set, and it also may be that your iPhoto.app is mistakenly trying to use your Home folder for its library instead of accessing its normal library package.
I would download Path Finder and try the steps described in the above thread.

Can't set up iPhoto stream?

Hi I'm having trouble setting up iphoto stream to cloud. At system preference, I'm told I need to update iphoto software using the original purchase account. They won't let me update. What can I do?
It is sooooo frustrating because in iphoto, they won't let me setup streaming to cloud. It asks for my username and password. It's the right one but it kept saying its not

Open iPhoto > About iPhoto and copy Version. If it's iPhoto 8, you have to purchase iPhoto '11. Open Finder, go to Applications folder, delete iPhoto and open App Store to purchase iPhoto. Finally, open System Preferences > iCloud and turn on Photo Stream

Your profile states that you are using Mac OSX 10.6.8, if that is the case iCloud will not work with your computer and you will be unable to use photo stream with your iPhoto application.

Sounds like one of your navigation nodes is broken. If you are unable to access them via the user interface you could try PowerShell.
