I need help retrieving Microsoft files lost when upgrading to OSX Mavericks

My daughter recently upgraded our Mac to the OSX Mavericks platform. Unfortunately, all of our Microsoft files, etc. are gone! I need to know how I can retrieve these files or if I can. I'm honestly not impressed with this new platform. I need help asap and your help is truly appreciated.

You have to make the backup yourself. That's your only protection against file loss whether accidental or catastrophic. In fact you should have at least two of them - each done differently and on separate drives.
If your files truly were "erased" then you can see if they can be recovered:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
     used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
     requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
     drive being backed up.
3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
     capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Frequent error message (8248) when downloading songs. Please help!

I am hoping to resolve an issue I keep encountering when trying to download songs from itunes. I frequently receive a message stating "there was a problem downloading the song. An unknow error occured (8248)" However, the song appears in my purchased history and of course I get charged. This has happened often, however occasionally a song will download properly, and we have been able to download applications (games) with no problem. Please help! Thank you.

I receive the JAVA error message detailed when trying to download a torrent file on my laptop. I have two browsers installed, Firefox and Internet Explorer. I do not get the message if I download via I.E. so the problem is a Firefox/Java one. the message reads :

Hmmm. Bang goes the theory of trying to get a heads-up on a 2324 with the other message.
The following is a better bet with a 2330 (rather than a 2324), but it might be useful to get the possibility off the table.
Let's try running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, does itunes launch without the 2324 afterwards?

PS3 and PSP don't optain IP Adres. Connection lost when downloading.

Hi. I have a WRT54G V.5.1 router with FW: v1.02.0. There was no problem at first. Wireless connection with my PS3 worked great. But since a week or so my PS3 and PSP doesn't optain an IP Adres anymore.
I wired my PS3 to the router and everything works ok.
PSP online does not work. I manually entered an IP Adres in my PSP connection settings. Connection tested and ok. But trying to internet with PSP gives me a DNS-error.
Then the problem with connection. When I download something with my pc or PS3 after a few minutes theres no connection anymore. I have to re-connect within the setup. Bittorrent will crash the router within seconds. I cant't download demo's or movies with PS3 without many disconnects.
From reading all over the net I understand that the V5 or higher seems to have these problems (connection). Is there nothing to solve this problem?

Set your PSP and PS3 back to obtaining IP and DNS Settings automatically. Don't manually type especially if you don't have a static IP address from your Internet Service Provider.
I believe your concern is just a matter of wireless connectivity. The most common reason why you are not being able to connect properly on the wireless network is that there may be a new wireless network within your vicinity that may be running of similar or if not, the same wireless settings to that of your Linksys wireless network.
My suggestion is for you to go into the console of your Linksys router and change the wireless channel, change the wireles network name. Make them as unique as possible. Best wireless channels to choose from are Channels 1, 6, 9 and 11. Channel 9 is good only for people in Canada.

Connection Lost When Downloading Song. No longer there!

Hi all!
I downloading a song from an album, when I lost my internet connection for a second. When I went to 'Check for Purchased Music', iTunes began to download the other songs off the album, and completely forgot that the first song was ever there to be downloaded! My account now says that all purchased music has been downloaded! But the first song is nowhere! Completely vanished!
Could anyone give me advise for this? Is my best bet just emailing iTunes support and letting them know? After all, I have paid for the song.

Yes, only iTMS support can reset that - if you've checked for purchased music and it thinks it's all downloaded.

DV Video lost when Connect add-in installed - HELP!

Hi,
We have this problem on hosted service Connect installation:
- video (from a mixer) is going through ADVC110 in DV to PC (Windows 7 64 bit)
- audio is going in audiocard in PC (because apparently we cannot use the audio in the DV stream???)
This is working ok
As soon as we need to use a PowerPoint the Adobe platform asks us to install the "Connect Add-in" or we will not have any audio it states
Having done this:
we lose the video from our ADVC 110....and the audio....
deinstalling the "Connect Add-in" gets us back to the beginning (video ok, audio ok), but then we cannot use a PPT Pod....
a) why can't we get audio from the DV stream
b) do we need the add-in
c) is still a know isssue
Please help us.

Thanks again. I finally found the answer and it is working in Safari and Chrome
First I updated Flash Player to the latest version (not sure whether this was required)
Then I found that even though the add-in was installed that Connect was not using it, as all the browser tabs were still showing, and adjusting sound was crashing the program.
I deleted the add-in directory from ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/www.macromedia.com/bin/connectaddin
I deleted the add-in directory from ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/www.macromedia.com/bin/adobeconnectaddin
Then I restarted the meeting and created a new Pod and Selected 'Share my Screen'
This forced the add-in to download and install.
Adobe Connect now starts from the add-in and not the browser

Error 14 when downloading 3.0. Help!

Pllleeeaaaseee help me. I bought the newest update on iPod Touch and when it reaches the end, it says something like unable to restore iPod. My iPod is now completely unusable, it has a USB connector and an iTunes icon on the screen. It won't go away! Any suggestions?

I really think Apple needs to post a warning to all Windows users to disable internet security software during OS upgrades. Please disable your firewall and anti-virus and try it again. iTunes needs to phone home during the upgrade and if your firewall blocks it, you get an error.

Data lost when download data after ALV display in background

Hi, everyone, first i display the data in ALV Grid, then I upload the data into sap application sever, it is ok in foreground. But when i run the program at background and the data is more then one page in spool list, the file on application server will lost and only has data in last page of spool list. Is this SAP standard behavior? please advice, thanks.

There is a simple logic.
First i get all data and keep the data in interal table T_LIST.
Then call function REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY to display data in T_LIST.
Third, Using statement OPEN DATASTET and TRANSFER to upload data in T_LIST into application server.
In fact, it will be ok if run the program foreground. it will also be ok if upload data into appllication server before display data with ALV grid. But i just want to know the root cause why data lost in my current design. thanks.

iTunes does not support drag and drop for iOS devices.
Connect either the iPod or iPad to your computer, launch iTunes.
Select the iPod (iPad) under Devices left side of the iTunes window in the source list.
Select Books from the menu.
Then click the Sync button bottom right side of the iTunes window.
You can select All Books or Selected Books.

I have a new iMac and get this error every time I try to dowload OS X

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

It sounds like you've installed Mavericks. You can confirm this by clicking on the Apple located at the top left of the screen and choosing "About This Mac" from the menu. You should see a window appear with the text "Version 10.9.1" near the middle.
If it says "Version 10.9.1", then you've installed Mavericks. It still says "Download" in the App Store because you can still download the operating system after installing it. This is useful if you want to download it for a friend, or create a USB boot drive.
