NB100 - where is numlock?

I was working with an NB100 today and discovered that the j,k, and l keys produced the numbers 1,2, and 3.
Same with all the keys around them. Those keys have tiny numerals on the leading edge of the keys, so I pressed the Function key and sure enough, that produced j, k and l (etc), HOWEVER only while the function key is depressed. Being a pretty smart fella, searched all over the keyboard for the NumLock key, which I figured had been accidently engaged. Hmm, no such key.
The possible combinations with the Function key that might turn this feature On or Off are quite obviously endless, though I did try Fn N, Fn Alt N Fn # and several other, and was not disappointment in my prediction that this would yield no results. :-(
I have searched all over this forum with its useless search function (NB100 numlock, or NB100 numeric yields over 50 hits that have nothing to do with either numlock to the NB100), and have obviously found nothing, otherwise I wouldn't be asking.
The owner tells me it wasn't like this yesterday, so obviously several of those tiny keys got unintentionlly pressed at the same time and something toggled on. Can somebody please tell me how to turn this OFF? If it is not a toggle (same key combination turns it ON and OFF) can somebody tell me how this poor guy turned it ON, so he can avoid doing that in the future?
Maybe I am all wet and this has nothing to do with some mysterious keystroke combination that has led to a permanent condition of NumLock, or there IS a Numlock key hidden somewhere on the keyboard. Then please tell me where it is, because two people spent several minutes examining every key (and their leading edges) looking for it... to no avail.
If this too is a firmware problem (like the keys missing), then where to I download the firmware to update the problem into oblivion?
Help me, please.
David

Have you tried FN F11 to turn off numlocks? It has a small icon on it that looks like a calculator...

Jeff

    Hello
The recovery disk cant be downloaded!!!
If you want a new recovery disk you should order a new one from Toshiba directly. If you check the user manual, you can find the direct link to the shop.

  • Bootable alternative to kbd_mode -u *solved*

So I have a keyboard where the numlock and capslock don't work unless I do "kbd_mode -u", which sets the keyboard to utf8.  The problem is this is a root command, and the command only works if run in the active xsession.  I tried using localectl but that didn't seem to affect anything.  To confirm, this is how it is set:
       System Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8
           VC Keymap: n/a
          X11 Layout: LANG=unicodeus
I tried using "en_US.utf8" for X11 layout and that too didn't work.   Anybody know of another alternative?  I can't put kbd_mode -u in my .xinitrc because it's a root command, and if I create a command in /etc/X11/xinit/, X fails to start all the way.

Create a file in /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/ with the filename ending in ".service" (for example, setkbdmode.service):
    [Unit]
Description=Sets keyboard mode to UTF-8 at boot.
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=kbd_mode -u
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
This will run "kbd_mode -u" at boot, so you don't have to! All for just six easy installments of 49.99!

  • E420-where is my NumLock key?

Man! I see the function keys (F1 thru F12, and how to toggle them to change volumen, brightness, etc.
I see Insert, Delete, Home, End, Backspaces and everything else. But where on earth is the NumLock key? Does anyone know?
Once found, can I hold down Alt and use the numbers row to create foreign characters (as I would if the keyboard and a 10-key pad?)

if so, you've got the island-style Precision keyboard, which has also come to the T/X/W-series machines. no numlock key and no embedded numeric keypad, sorry to say.

  • Please help!! Newbie here really need help. Numlock, divers, backup, recovery disk

    Hi everyone
I finally found where to post
I really wish someone could or would help me
I have a lenovo g550 for about 4-5 years And I was happy with it
few days go I cleaned installed windows Ii got a friend to help infests he put it on the d drive then c drive And c drive gainsaid he formatted my d drive chlorinating on therein was a real unswayable I kind of sorted it out. And I learnt a lot bout the oem partitioning deleted that though. Can someone tell me If I can boot or recover my previous vista from there.?
If not its fine but then I would like to know is can I change the oem partition with the image or recovery (whatever you call it) of the new windows  7 or how to go about creating a recovery disk.
After installing the new windows my PC seems to be fine but I don't know If I kept all the drivers And whatever goes with it. What are all the drivers I need And where do I find If I have them or not. I am not really worried about my data as I want to start fresh.
Another thing I noticed is my number keypad stopped working all of a sudden. When I press the numlock button it beeps and the light does go on and off. When its on it doesn't give me numbers e.g... If I press 5 it actually highlights where the cursor is.
And my mouse/trackpad is not the same as it was before. When I had vista on the right of the trackpad I could use it to scroll up and down and the bottom of the trackpad allowed me to scroll left to right. This function is no longer there. I have to use the arrows to go up and down.
Somebody please help as I do need my laptop for work purposes.
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

hi any drivers you should need you should be able to get through support drivers&downloads link at top of this sites page bud you could use partition magic to clear all partitions and create new multible one if you wish the rest wait till after you put drivers in and see if probs still exist bud

  • Satellite C850 - Where can I get and Win7 istallation .iso from?

    Hi guys,
I've searched around and found lots of threads, but haven't actually found a solution.
I bought C850 with Win7-64-home-premium preinstalled for my wife.
First I wanted to decline Microsoft EULA and claim money back for Win7 licence, but I thought its only 50 or 60 quid, and I might want it once a year so I left it as is.
First impression - its Terrible slow !!!
I have an old NB100, with Atom and 2GB RAM running Linux witch I use from time to time when I work on the move and this old tiny netbook is A LOT faster then my new C850 with i3 and 8GB of RAM. I mean A LOOOOOT faster.
Then I run Mint Live-CD and then I saw how fast C850 can be if only given real operating system instead of Microsofts crapware.
Then I installed WIn7-64-professional and there was a BIG difference. It wasn't nowhere near as fast as on Linux Mint, but it was whole lot better then original install.
That was only to check how it goes on clean install. I do not have licence for Win7-pro for C850 and I have not even a slightest intention of paying for something as useless as Win7. People should be paid for all the suffering caused by Win7.
On the other hand I would gladly pay for Linux Mint and in fact I have made a nice donation to the project not long time ago :)
Conclusion - slowdown was casued by Toshiba bloatware (which is completely not needed for proper operation of laptop!) and all the other stuff like McAfee or Nero.
I've tried to do reinstall but the reinstalled Win7 comes with all this bloatware and I need clean Win7 install.
To cut short answers like "install and delete waths not needed" - that doesn't solve the problem for two reasons:
    1) if install and delete, a lot of stuff stays on the system, registry entries, lots of files etc
    2) I need and .iso of Win7, so I can slipstream few things and get rid of WHOLE LOT of useless things
Where can I get and istallation .iso from ?
I mean clean Win7 without all that Toshiba bloatware, McAfee, Nero and other rubbish.
Mind you, I purchased a laptop with Win7 licence so I do have LEGAL RIGHT to use Win7 on its own.
    Any hint VERY MUCH appreciated.
    Thank you.

On this forum you can find a lot of similar threads where people write about the same experience. We can discuss about this theme for days but the conclusion is always the same: new notebooks are delivered with recovery image that contains OS, all necessary drivers, Toshiba specific tools and utilities, additional software and some stuff that nobody needs.
Nobody force notebook owners to use recovery image like this. What you must do is OS optimizing. Remove all software you dont need, disable auto start for all not important stuff and check Windows settings. I do the same all the time and there is big difference how notebook runs, especially start-up time will be much shorter. On this forum you can find very interesting threads about that.
So my advice for you is to install recovery image again and optimize it. The performance will be OK and your wife will have nice piece of hardware for everyday work.
    > 1) if install and delete, a lot of stuff stays on the system, registry entries, lots of files etc
Everything can be removed but if you dont do this it is definitely not so critical for notebook performance.
    > 2) I need and .iso of Win7, so I can slipstream few things and get rid of WHOLE LOT of useless things
At first, you will not find iso file anywhere and slipstreaming will not work at all. You cannot unbundle recovery image and use parts that you need. It doesnt work on this way.
I just hope you have created recovery disc before you have started your testing phase.

  • Can't get my USB keyboard to wake NB100 up from sleep - (Windows 7)

I use a monitor, USB wireless mouse and a USB wired keyboard with my NB100.
My keyboard has a power button and it's set up to put the computer into sleep mode when pressed, which works fine. My problem is that the only way I can wake the computer is to press a key on the NB100's built-in keyboard, pressing anything on my USB keyboard does nothing.
I've gone into device manager and unchecked 'allow computer to turn off this device to save power' and also enabled everything in the BIOS but it still wont work.
I'd really like to get this sorted out as I have the NB100 tucked away out of sight and it's a bit of a pain to have to dig it out, open the lid and press the space bar every time I want to wake the computer :-(
    Any ideas anyone?
    Regards
    Trixxy.

    It's RTM.
I have my keyboard directly plugged into the NB100 with my mouse plugged into the USB port built-in to my keyboard.
The Keyboard has a sleep/power button, where briefly pressing the button puts the NB100 into sleep mode, while keeping the button held down longer powers down the NB100.
In power options, I have it set up to sleep when the sleep button is pressed, and shut down when the power button is pressed.
In device manager for 'HID Keyboard device' I have ticked "Allow this device to wake the computer", the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unticked and greyed out.
In device manager for 'Generic USB Hub' the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is ticked, while the "Allow this device to wake the computer" is unticked and greyed out. I untick the 'save power' option and click OK. Then when I put the NB100 into sleep mode and wake it (using the NB100's keyboard as USB ain't working) I find the 'save power' option is checked again???
I'm thinking this may be where the problem is. I checked the Power tab of the Generic USB Hub to confirm that this was my Keyboard and mouse.
    Regards,
    Trevor.

  • NB100 internal microphone not working

    Hi
I did a fresh XP SP3 install on my NB100. I did not do it from the Toshiba recovery disc as my NB100 would not write that Toshiba disc creator that came with it to my external DVDR/CDR even though it works fine with Veritas.
So I downloaded all the specific drivers and everything else on there is running fine. Except the internal microphone. I can't see anywhere to select it specifically. I can select the Realtek mic source, but I'm guessing that is for the mic input on the front panel. Where does the internal mic reside or where are drivers for it? I've searched this site and Googled all over the place. The mic was working fine before the re-install.
    Cheers
    Kev

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
Yeah I loaded the drivers for the internal webcam and it works fine. I tried the mic boost trick, but still no go. I can't imagine the mic has died at the same time I did an install, so there is something I am missing. I'll probably slap myself around the head when I find it :-)
    Cheers

  • Source for 2GB Memory for NB100-12A

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain the 2GM memory upgrade for my NB100-12A? How much does it cost? To install it, do I have to remove existig 1GM and replace with new memory or what is the procedure?

First, a question - are you running the pre-installed version of Windows XP? If so, I'm not sure it will support 2GB of RAM - does anyone know for sure? +Officially+ the NB100 only supports 1GB, so I'd check before spending any money...
Assuming your OS +does+ support 2GB, I'd suggest you try Crucial - good memory, good service and a fair price. If you go to the following link, you can enter the details of your netbook and it will provide a link to the correct memory:
    [Crucial memory|http://www.crucial.com/uk/netbook/index.aspx]
It looks like it's about £20 at the moment - prices have risen lately :( You could get memory that's +slightly+ cheaper, but then you'd have the hassle of working out exactly what to get.
In terms of fitting, you need to remove the cover on the bottom of the NB100 (it's secured by a single screw). Remove the existing RAM and fit the new stick. Re-attach the cover and reboot - job done :)

  • [Solved] Numlock on boot (with systemd)

I recently upgraded to systemd. Everything is working extremely well. Except that I am given to understand that systemd no doesn't use /etc/inittab, where I had added the command from the wiki that turns on numlock on each of the virtual terminals. Unfortunately the wiki doesn't have any method to do it with systemd, only the /etc/inittab method.
This means that for a brief while, I had to live with the onerous task of hitting numlock manually. It was one of the worst weeks of my life. My index finger is still raw.
I have come up with a somewhat-solution. I just edited /etc/bash.bashrc and added
    if [[ $( tty ) == /dev/tty? ]]; then
        setleds +num
    fi
to it, which works quite well. It turns on num lock once you're logged in as long as you are on a virtual terminal and not on one of the /dev/pts/* ones.
My question is, is there a better place to do this? Maybe some way to get it to turn on before you're even logged in? It doesn't really matter all that much, I'm just trying to make things "correct."

Don't forget to mark it as solved.
Yes, I tried that. I use lxdm and xfce, and setting the numlock=1 option in /etc/lxdm/lxdm.conf turns on numlock in xfce and the light in the consoles, but not the actual numlock itself in consoles.
And Kejpi thanks, I was doing that but when I upgraded to systemd it said those would be taken out "at some point" so I was trying to find out if a permanent solution existed yet. Apparently it does not exist yet, which is fine, I was just curious. So I guess I'll stick with the bashrc method for now.
    Thanks for the replies.

  • Need some Vista drivers for NB100 mini book

    When I installed vista on NB100 I can't find drivers for :
    Network wired card
    wireless
    webcam
    and display driver
    Where Can I find them?

    Hi,
I think you must search on external websites. Toshiba doesnt provide Vista drivers on this notebook because the system requirements of Vista are too high for a mini notebook and Windows XP or Ubuntu will run smoother as Vista.
Anyway, here are some examples where you can search:

  • NB100 - How set the screen brightness?

    Hi all.
Just bought an NB100 - overall very very pleased with it. Well built, good screen and very compact etc.
Got a couple of questions? The screen brightness is controlled by Fn+F9/F10. I like to have it set to "halfway" or less - partly to preserve battery - but also because I find max brightness is actually TOO bright for me! But on reboot the machine seems to always start at maximum again. Is there any way round this? Does it perhaps need a firmware update (my machine seems to be running version 1.90 which I believe is the latest)?
I noticed other threads mentioning Fn + F8 as a means of selecting Bluetooth/Wlan etc? Mine seems to just control the fan setting and processor speed - The "grey" fan setting gives 1.6ghz and the fan comes on - whereas Fn+F8 toggles a "white" fan icon - where the processor throttles down to 800/900 ish and the fan slows/stops(?). [in passing I've noticed some videos become "jerky" if the lower setting is chosen]
I'm not 100% sure what Fn+ "pipe" key does (to the left of F1)? The Fn+F1 switches on wireless/wifi I know - but the "pipe" key seems to be a Wlan symbol (or is that the key to use for Bluetooth or GPS or whatever)? Sorry to sound so ignorant - but the user guide doesnt go into that much detail. I'm fairly sure the machine I bought - which was a Toshiba Refurbished/Reconditioned NB100 - model PLL10E - hasnt got any BT/GPS etc - just the basic wifi which F1 switches on and off.
Final comment - and others have said this - the key tops are very difficult to see in low light!! The "grey" colour was definitely a design mistake! But I can live with it - either a usb light? or some stickon (white) letters?
    Regards to all.

hi, i think the best way to set brightness is in options of energy properties accessible in system tray icon. I know about bt and wlan activation, it seem that bt and wlan dispositives are on the same circuit on/off, so not indipendents. Nb100 is a good inexspansive machine :)

Win XP and Win 7 drivers are available for the NB100.
Vista is past Win 7 is the best OS which have been released by MS I recommend using Win 7 instead of Vista
However, you can also try to use Win 7 drivers on Vista OS in some cases it works
