ND Filter vs EV Compensation

Question 1:
I’m acquiring a Neutral Density filter for my Nikon D90. It will reduce the light input by three stops.
Assume I am shooting in aperture mode.
What if, instead of using the ND filter, I simply lowered the EV (exposure compensation) to intentionally underexpose by 3 stops. Would the effect be the same?
I tend to think not, because the TTL metering, in the presence of the ND filter, would adjust in such a way as to not underexpose (it would simply lengthen the exposure time).
Since I don't have the filter yet I can't do a comparison, but is my thinking correct?
Question 2:
I’m using CS4. Which method (ND filter vs lowered EV) would give me the most control in CS4 Adobe Raw Converter (ARC)?
Thanks.

No...
Underexposing gives you an underexposed image. Using an ND filter gives you a correctly exposed image. You use an ND filter to reduce the ambient light  (or whatever your light) is too strong and is falling outside the range of the exposure controls, for whatever reason.
For example...
You want to shoot a moving subject in bright daylight. The effect you want is a shallow depth of filed and a movement blurred background. Right? So you'd pan the camera with the subject. And you'd get a blurred background... right? Wrong...  Because of the intensity of light, your shutter speed is high and your aperture is too small. Result? Sharp background, frozen action, not the feel you want. An ND filter would reduce the light passing through the camera's lens and so enable you to use a wider aperture and a slower shutter speed. Result... the effect you want.
Underexposing the same situation, apart from an underexposed image, would have the opposite effect. You'd be stopping down the lens even more and getting even greater depth of field and  / or getting a faster shutter speed for even less blur...
Hope that explains the situation...

    hello
    I need to filter the field Compensation Review (iview Compensation Planning), this value come from table : T71ADM08 Compensation Reviews
    i have many values, but i need show a range o one set the of values, any ideas ??
    I can show only one filtering parameter from the parameter value of the iView, but it only one value, I need a filter a range
    please any ideas, ???

    Hello,
    having had this very same issue in the past - the option we went with was to enhance the RFC FM that returned the list of the reviews with some removed depending on the employee type.
    (I'm assuming that the list of avaliable reviews is dependent on the employee and that's why you want to filter).

  • Filter for exposure compensation

    When bracketing exposures, as is often done for landscape work HDR, etc), you typically end up with a large number if variants. It would be very helpful to be able to identify all images with a given exposure bias (typically zero). You could then quickly cull the discard images without having to brows through all the variants. I now do this by hand, color code the zero bias images, filter by the color and then x-flag the discards. I then view all, x-flag the matching variants and delete.

  • DVD made on a Mac, won't play correctly on a Mac, will play on a DVD player

    Can some bright person please explain this?
    I have an NTSC project, 90 mins in length.  I made an m2v file in Compressor (at several different presets, all with the same result), from which I authored a DVD in DVDSP.
    The resulting DVD plays fine in a DVD player onto a TV, but stutters slightly, and unpredictably, when played on any of my three Macs, (and on a PC as well!). The stuttering will not necessarily be in the same place in the timeline every time.  The stuttering shows up on horizontal pans (there is a lot of rostrum artwork in this project, so lots of smooth pans across drawings).  Now, when I look at the m2v file directly in MPEGStreamclip, I see the stuttering as well.  Also, when I look directly at the footage in the FCP timeline, sure enough, there is occasional stuttering there too, but here's the thing - when I look at the direct output from the timeline simultaneously on a TV monitor, there is no stuttering.
    I tried putting compression markers every 10 frames in the worst affected areas, but it made no difference.  Examining the m2v file closely, I can see all the frames are as they should be - there is no evidence of the image being out of place, so it's a playback issue, not a compression issue.  It seems the computer dispaly cannot keep up with the playback, even though the computer itself can (hence the correct display on a TV).
    I regularly play commercial DVDs in these Macs, with no problem whatsoever.  I am now trying to produce a commercial DVD which will play equally well in a computer as in a DVD player.  Where am I going wrong?
    (I regularly make DVDs from material sourced either in the PAL format or an HD format, following the same workflow, and have not experienced this problem before.  I don't know whether that is of any significance.)

  • Burning a DVD from FCPX

    My workflow is as follows:
    1. Shoot in HXR-NX5u Sony AVCHD 1920x1080 | 29.97 fps
    2. Import as is to FCPX letting FCPX create the project properties according to the first clip
    3. Edit and create project.
    4. Export as ProRes 422
    5. Burn with iDVD to a PAL DVD 16:9
    My result is an acceptable DVD. My only issue is with pans and fast zooms there remains a "choppiness" in the videos when played on DVD player and computer alike. This choppiness is not present on the exported ProRes 422 file, nor is it present on a Vimeo export that I did. Only on the DVD wherever it is played.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks.
    When I say choppy, I mean that when the frame pans it seems as if it is skipping frames and jumping to the next. It is not skipping frames though because this is not apparent on steadily framed shots. It is a shame because my montages come out so beautifully and when I burn them I get this choppiness which gives me a sub par result.

  • Compressor 4.0 VERY slow - even though I am using Qmaster, why?

    I am using Compressor 4.0.7 and found the threads on QMaster clusters to get it to speed up.
    I looked at my activity monitor and now see that its using about 98% of my CPU and all but 2Gb of my available RAM.   So in theory I've got it to use best settings.
    However, it has not sped up the process much and I'm still looking at 12 hrs to convert a 40 minute file to MP4 (settings below).
    Yes, it is converting a 720x480 source to 640x480 square pixel destination, but it should no way take this long.
    Is it because "frame controls" are on?   Should I upgrade to 4.1 to see if that works better?

    What type of file is the source media? What resolution? If it's HD 1280x720, for example, or if it's already been encoded as one format (MP4, H.264, etc), you're asking Compressor to shrink the file and re-encode, which can take time.
    Also, if you have an older machine with 2 or less processors, they can heat up very quickly in which case it can take a VERY long time to compress. If your computer is super hot, I'd suggest trying to get a fan or place it on an AC vent - something to help cool it down to speed rendering.

    Hi,
    You cannot change the material codes of the existing material instead u have to create new material codes with 11 digits for the existing materials along with any new materials.
    For your old material codes u have to complete all the open orders and all the stocks to be exhasted before u should take further steps.
    Now after clearing all the stocks of the old materials, u can archive all those materials since u cannot delet the material master which have been already created.
    Hope above gives you some idea abt ur requirement.
    Anyway wait for some more experts to reply.
    Regards

  • Mpeg streamclip vs. compressor 3.5 ( mpeg streamclip 100 times faster)

    (I also posted this in another thread, but i hopes that it gets read, i'm posting it again...)
    I'm working on a mbp 2.66ghz with 4g ram, compressor 3.5. Last night I set up a batch of 6 1440x1080 prores 50i clips (each between 5 and 10 min long) to be encoded for web streaming. The exact specs for the encode are here:
    Description: H.264 video at 8 Mbps with AAC 44.1kHz audio

    I woke up this morning hoping to be able to watch the clips, and compressor was still chugging away on the first clip - and telling me that it was still going to take 36 hrs to finish.
    exasperated, i quit the process.
    I decided to try encoding with mpeg streamclip 1.9.3b2. I chose the same settings:
    h.264 , multi-pass, 4Mbps @ 90% quality (ok, not 8Mbps like compressor, but 8 was still fast in mpeg streamclip), de-interlace, same frame size, yada yada.
    mpeg streamclip did in 5 min. what compressor could not do overnight, and the quality is not bad.
    what gives??

    will my files still be de-interlaced if I turn frame controls off?

    I've got a problem with a rhythmic glitch in the video that seems to be at the same rate as the GOP (approx every 1/2 second). It doesn't happen all the time, but for maybe about a minute. I can see the problem on a disk played on a DVD player as well as in the simulator in DVDPro, but it doesn't show up in the Quicktime file that was the source for the MPEG file, so I assume its originating in Compressor. Has anyone seen this before and any thoughts on what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks

    It seems that I've been able to correct my problem by inserting compression markers for the duration of the glitch events. There aren't a alot of pixels changing in the scene (action/quick motion) so its a puzzlement why this corrects it unless subtle noise in the low light scenes are making things difficult for compressor.

  • CIC decimation and Compensation filter

    Hi,
    I have to implement a three stage multirate filter in FPGA where Stage1 is a CIC filter, Stage2 and Stage3 are the FIR filters. I have generated the filter parameters of all the stages using the 'Multistage Multirate Filter Design Express VI'. According to that Stage1 decimates the signal 4 times, Stage2 and 3 decimates 2 times. So an overall decimation factor of 16.
    I used an FM band of 4 MHz with an IQ rate of 5MS/s as my input to the CIC filter. The CIC filter works fine and decimates the signal to an IQ rate of 1.25 MS/s. I then used those decimated signal values and fed it to the 'DFD MRate Filtering for Single block VI' , which decimates the signal further to an IQ rate of 625 kHz and gives the correct output as desired.
    I did the same with 'FIR filter VI' using the coefficients generated by the' Multistage Multirate Filter Design Express VI' for stage2 and decimated it 2 times using 'Decimate (continuous) VI'. It should give me the same output as obtained by 'DFD MRate Filtering for Single block VI'. The frequency response of both FIR and MRate filter are the same but their filtered outputs don't match.
    Any suggestions why am I not getting the desired output? I have attached the VI of my labview code. Kindly have a look.
    Thanks

    I am building a digital down converter in LabVIEW. I am not able to figure out if my output is correct ( Inphase and Quadrature components). Am I on the right path? Please find attached the VI I have been working on.
    Thank you.

  • Is it possible to redirect in a filter After the doChain?

    Hello all,
    I have a filter configured...
      <filter>
        <filter-name>Hibernate Session Filter</filter-name>
        <filter-class>com.test.HibernateSessionFilter</filter-class>
      </filter>
      <filter-mapping>
        <filter-name>Hibernate Session Filter</filter-name>
        <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
        <dispatcher>REQUEST</dispatcher>
      </filter-mapping>... in my Web.xml file.
    I'm using this filter to implement the Hibernate "Session in View" notion. This is where a suitable interceptor (filter for me!) grabs the request /response on the way in and starts a hibernate session... then your servlets do whatever it is they do (which may/may not involve hibernate)... then on the way out the filter commits the transaction and closes the session.
    More can be read about this here...
    http://www.hibernate.org/43.html
    ... but the most interesting bit is really the filter itself:
    public class HibernateSessionRequestFilter implements Filter {
        private static Log log = LogFactory.getLog(HibernateSessionRequestFilter.class);
        private SessionFactory sf;
        public void doFilter(ServletRequest request,
                             ServletResponse response,
                             FilterChain chain)
                throws IOException, ServletException {
            try {
                log.debug("Starting a database transaction");
                sf.getCurrentSession().beginTransaction();
                // Call the next filter (continue request processing)
                chain.doFilter(request, response);
                // Commit and cleanup
                log.debug("Committing the database transaction");
                sf.getCurrentSession().getTransaction().commit();
            } catch (StaleObjectStateException staleEx) {
                log.error("This interceptor does not implement optimistic concurrency control!");
                log.error("Your application will not work until you add compensation actions!");
                // Rollback, close everything, possibly compensate for any permanent changes
                // during the conversation, and finally restart business conversation. Maybe
                // give the user of the application a chance to merge some of his work with
                // fresh data... what you do here depends on your applications design.
                throw staleEx;
            } catch (Throwable ex) {
                // Rollback only
                ex.printStackTrace();
                try {
                    if (sf.getCurrentSession().getTransaction().isActive()) {
                        log.debug("Trying to rollback database transaction after exception");
                        sf.getCurrentSession().getTransaction().rollback();
                } catch (Throwable rbEx) {
                    log.error("Could not rollback transaction after exception!", rbEx);
                // Let others handle it... maybe another interceptor for exceptions?
                throw new ServletException(ex);
        public void init(FilterConfig filterConfig) throws ServletException {
            log.debug("Initializing filter...");
            log.debug("Obtaining SessionFactory from static HibernateUtil singleton");
            sf = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory();
        public void destroy() {}
    }This all works well except when there's a hibernate exception! When there is an exception I'd like to trap the error and redirect the user to an error page showing some text.. or do something informative. The comment in the sample code "// Let others handle it... " ain't very helpful!
    When I try to do a redirect/forward I get illegalStateExceptions (?because the response is already committed??) Is there some way I can manage the response being committed? I'm not very clear on how the header states/'response flush' actually happens. I've had a rummage here and see many similar posts, but they all seem to refer to redirection Before the doChain method... whereas I want to redirect after that method call.
    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Nope! Not yet. I tried doing a simple ResponseWrapper (just to mess with the response output, inserting text here and there...
    import java.io.PrintWriter;
    import javax.servlet.ServletOutputStream;
    import javax.servlet.ServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.ServletResponse;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponseWrapper;
    class HtmlResponseWrapper
    extends HttpServletResponseWrapper
      // A response must provide a PrintWriter and a ServletOutputStream.  So we
      // create new ones here, that uses our HtmlServletOutputStream instead of the
      // default ones...
      private PrintWriter printWriter;
      private HtmlServletOutputStream servletOutputStream;
      public HtmlResponseWrapper(
          ServletResponse servletResponse,
          ServletRequest request,
          String menuInsertMarker,
          String crumbInsertMarker)
      throws java.io.IOException
        // Run the constructor on HttpServletResponseWrapper
        super((HttpServletResponse) servletResponse);
        // Generate the appropriate ServletOutputStream/PrintWriter from the inbound
        // response...
        servletOutputStream = new HtmlServletOutputStream(
            servletResponse.getOutputStream(),
            request,
            menuInsertMarker,
            crumbInsertMarker);
        printWriter = new PrintWriter(servletOutputStream);
      public ServletOutputStream getOutputStream() throws java.io.IOException {
        return servletOutputStream;
      public PrintWriter getWriter() throws java.io.IOException {
        return printWriter;
    }... and that worked well. There's lots of examples of this kind of thing on the web. What I need to do now is understand when status changes, buffers get flushed etc. so I can override more than just the getOutputStream and getWriter methods, to keep my request alive until it gets back to the hibernate filter.
    Hoped to do it over Christmas... but maybe in the New Year!
    Once again - if anyone has any pointers - much appreciated!
    Rgds,
    T.

  • FFT Filter Preset Importation / Creation

    After using Audition to copy the eq's of two different songs, I computed the difference between them in Excel to make a compensation eq curve. I would like to use the data I collected to generate an FFT Filter preset. I have looked into editing Audition's settings xml file but don't understand how the FFT presets are formatted. The alternative, of course, is to input the eq data into the Audition FFT Filter plugin by hand but this can be a very lengthy process depending on the FFT Size (in my case, 512, which generates 230 eq curve points; right now I'm on around number 50). Is it possible to create an FFT Filter preset by modifying Audition's xml settings, and if so, how are the presets formatted? Thanks

    >Is it possible to create an FFT Filter preset by modifying Audition's xml settings?
    Technical answer:
    I'm not convinced that it is. Currently the most reliable way of modifying (or swapping) presets is to create the one you want, and store it as part of a script. The good thing about this is that once you've figured out how the numbering works, you can edit the script at will. So if you enter all of your points, you can look at how this is stored in the script, and modifying it becomes quite simple. In fact, I suspect that you could probably configure Excel to do most of the work for you without too much trouble at all.
    Audible results answer:
    I wouldn't ever bother to do what you are doing though - no two songs are the same, and there's no reason on earth why the EQ for one would be anything like correct, or appropriate at all for another.
