Neat feature in Aperture

Did you know that command clicking on a project/album will open it in a new tab. Option click (a project or album) to open a new pane inside the current window.
p.s. there is a "Pro Application Support 4.0" update which makes small changes to the apps GUI (separation lines is the first one I noticed).

Yes. I have already picked that up and more. I listen to the OReilly "Inside Aperture" podcasts, where Derrick Story talks to people inside the Aperture dev. team, as well as users to find out more about the application. I have learned a lot from listening to Joe Schorr and the other members of his team about using Aperture.
Two tips that I have found really useful is the ability to rotate the workspace (shift+W) and to show highlights in the pictures (altshiftH).
Anyone else want to share their favorite feature?

  • Future features in Aperture

What would you like to see in Aperture in the future?
Some things i'd definately like to see:
    - The ability to control the camera from Aperture. Very useful in a studio environment
    - Some simple kind of masking
    - Adjustable levels
    - Better dual screen support, my main monitor is a 30" ACD and my secondary one is a 19" eizo so it would be nice to get thumbnails on the secondary one and the main image on main one.
    - More RAW adjusments including lens correction (distortion, vignetting..)
    - More advanced Noise reduction settings
    - Color adjustments
I just switched from Lightroom beta 3 to Aperture 1.1.2 and it's really awesome. If Apple keep updating it with the current pace it might become a big name in the photo industry.

My number one priority is for them to get rid of the library format, or at least give me the option (as Lightroom does) of storing my files where I want to store them. This isn't a feature request so much as a bugfix, so hopefully it will come in 1.2 or 1.3 or whatever the next free update is.
From there, I want a way to archive to optical/removable media, and to distribute my files anywhere I choose to store them. Apple can/should take a look at iView for tips on how to do this well (take a look soon, before MS destroys the app) - it is critical to me that I be able to view my catalog even if images are stored offline.
Improving the speed at which images are loaded would be nice too - it's still glacially slow (several seconds) to load D2x nefs.
    Those are must-have.
    Then -
    1. Make the book tool useful by:
    a) Allow me to set the page size/aspect ratio
    b) Allow me to export page layouts to jpg for my lab
    c) Allow me to export page layouts to layered psd/tiff for further editing
    d) Borders/dropshadows on photo boxes
    e) Masks for photo boxes
    f) Allow me to make my own themes/templates/etc (have a look at Portraits and Prints for a great template designer)
    2. Improve sharpening tool
    3. Improve noise reduction tool (have a look at what Bibble has done by integrating NN)
    4. Make print tool useful by:
    a) Allow package printing (2 5x7 on one 7x10 page, ferinstance)
    b) Better UI for the print tool
    c) Allow for positioning on-page when borderless
    5. WB Presets
    6. Curves
    7. Incremental zoom
    8. Proper dual-monitor support
    9. Burn projects across multiple dvds

  • MacBookPro features in Aperture

Don't toast me as i know MBP users are waiting for 1.1, but i have been wondering what sort of integration the MBP might offer Aperture in two areas:
    1. Say one is using Aperture's slideshow feature, will the MBP's remote control work to pause/skip the slideshow feature ? Its useful when doing a show'n'tell demo. If i imported raws into iphoto then the remote will work, but will it extend to control Aperture ?
    2. Anyone using Canon's Wireless transmitter WFT-E1 to shoot untethered and have them import into a MBP folder ? As 1.1 was advertised, there will be Automator scripts to import into Aperture any images that land into a specified folder.

i think the remote should work with the slide shows. right now the remote works with quick time and other apple apps i dont see why it would not work with the slide show...

  • Will the new iCloud feature sync Aperture libraries between different computers?

If there was a Cloud section in the forums i would post this there but there isn't so here it is. Syncing my Aperture libraries between my laptop and imac is a big problem for me right now. Does anyone know if the new Cloud air synching feature coming this fall will sync photos between aperture libraries on multiple computers?

There is now an iCloud community iCloud
But I believe the answer to this question is no, iCloud is not meant to do this type of syncing.

  • Can the find feature in Aperture do this?

I have a list of 200 image numbers (same as Version Name)from a wedding client.
This list is a Word doc.
I will be using these choices to design a book.
Can I copy and paste this Word doc. list into Aperture so it can gather those specific photos. I have been trying to do this with no luck.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Assuming all your Version names in Aperture are unique, have a look at this post from a few weeks ago:

  • Does anybody else see real obvious bugginess with the Faces feature of Aperture?

I'm not looking for miracles, I don't think.  I don't expect faces to automagically recognize every face I've previously identified.  I just want the various views of faces to agree.  I'll go through pictures from a party painstakingly identifying all the attendees in the Split View.  Then I'll click Faces for the album and mouse around over some of the faces and see that it's confused.  Instead of showing only pictures of Bob when I mouse around over Bob, there'll occasionally be a picture of Joe.  Go back to the pictures in Split View and it appears as though Bob is always labeled correctly.

Faces can take several hours to fully update from any new information you input.  Also, if you force-quit Aperture (or it crashes) after inputting information into Faces, it is possible to lose that information.
In effect (and this is just a guess from my experience), it can take Faces an hour or so to write everything back to disk (I suspect it is re-processing before saving).
If you allow Faces to settle down after using it, are you still seeing errors?
Another glitch -- probably for similar reasons -- is that there is a slight delay between applying a name and Faces accepting that name.  Several times in my experience Faces has, when I press {Enter} to apply a name I just typed in the Name field, instead of accepting the name given, asked, "Is this 'Bob' " where "Bob" is Faces's ID suggestion that it finally pulled from it's look-up list.  This can, of course, result in mis-indentified and un-identified faces where I had gone through the actions to properly identify them.

  • Neat Feature with apple remote.

I held down the play/pause button for a couple of seconds, and my computer showed a little remote on the screen with zzzz and then it went to sleep. How neat!

    hehe that is soo cool..
one of the many things i like about apple.. they are just so cool!!!

  • Adobe Bridge / Aperture organization feature only comparison

I am curious what others' thoughts are about comparing Adobe Bridge / Version Cue to Aperture's pre-editing organizational features (meaning the ability to organize prior to doing any RAW conversion and editing). What do people see as the most important features that Aperture adds above and beyond Bridge?
Remember, these are pre-editing features only, which is basically organization. Do not include editing and/or finishing options in comments. If anyone is interested why I am asking this, Its for two reasons:
    1) I'm considering a new workflow option of using Bridge and ACR, and only importing into Aperture after all conversions are complete. This basically eliminates Aperture functionality for the initial image evaluation phase, and importing only converted PSDs. Yes, that eliminates a huge part of the value Aperture offers, but perhaps it saves the ability to use it.
    2) I want to know other than aesthetics what I am really losing by not just using Bridge/Version Cue exclusively over Aperture (up to now, I use Bridge, but not Version Cue). I already have my own thoughts on this, but I'd like to tap others' knowledge and advice.
    Brad

Frankly I think you'd be throwing out all of the good parts of aperture.
I really, really like the way it imports from cards. I really like the auto-stacking, the side-by-side compare, the easy ratings (Bridge is just as good for rating) and it's fast for this - I love how it displays a preview on the second monitor.
Really, if Aperture didn't have the library, and were just an organizational/evaluation tool, I think I would be in love with it - it falls apart at the editing and archiving phases.

  • HT3805 why is the face and names feature grayed out in my aperture program?

why is my faces aand names feature in aperture 3.2 grayed out?

Are they greyed out in the toolbar or in the preferences?  If the former, then enable them in preferences ;-)

  • Folder contents not displayed - Is this a bug or a feature?

If I import a complete folder structure from my harddisk (referenced file mode), I get a neatly reproduced folder structure in the Aperture project window. However, if I click on of the folders, no pictures are displayed in the Aperture browser. Apperently, you have to click on the automatically created albums within the folders to see the pictures.
Am I doing something wrong or is this (another) badly implemented feature of Aperture?

Feature. But not a very good one.

  • Adobe creates Lightroom Plugin for Aperture

Glad to see Adobe has created a plugin to ease transition.  Guides have been helpful, but aren't as a complete solution as this may offer.  Unfortunately, it seems most users can't find a way to install it.
    https://creative.adobe.com/addons/products/3213#.VDgVnynCMox
Although if you have hundreds of thousands of images, this may not be up to the task.  Lets hope.

There are a lot of complexities, to be sure.  I just ran a test conversion on the entire library.
First thoughts?  We've been blessed with Aperture these many years.  Lightroom certainly has some capabilities when it comes to photo editing, but I can see why so many professionals have held out so long with Aperture.  There just isn't a better personal-level DAM.  I've been reading a book on Lightroom, and there are several limitations as far as manipulating and cataloging.  Definitely some neat features as well, but for the most part, not as versatile as Aperture.  I'm going to miss that.
I don't like the folder/collections paradigm.  Feel like I'm in a straight jacket.  But at least it gives me some versatility.  Based on testing, I figure I'll reference my masters as year/project, to provide some organization.   More than that, it gets difficult to move around within the browser pane.
The plugin has it's problems, but it did perform better than expectations.  Out of 40,000 photos, it managed to import all but 200 or so.  Oddly, many groupings the same Aperture project.  It did a good job of stacking images, but you don't see stacks in collections!  It also did find and migrate a bunch of duplicate JPEG "masters" that were presumably created as I've exported to Facebook and other projects.
One gotcha, you should create full-sized previews if you want those migrated, too.
The faces tagging doesn't work yet.  And much of my keywords were scrambled.  Certainly can pick up the pieces, but that endeavor will take several hours as well.  Lightroom won't make this very easy.  It seems a bit more cumbersome to navigate, filter, and sort, but perhaps that's just due to my lack of experience.
I only have 1400 stacks, so I figure I'll create a metadata reference for the "pick", flag them in Lightroom, then go through stacks one by one and restack them.  Shouldn't take more than a half a day.
Adobe support and forums just aren't very good.  Few people participate, even though there is a larger Lightroom community??

  • New to Apple and Aperture-I am surprised at the lack of integration between Aperture and applications as iMovie.

Aperture slideshow is terrible in terms of entering any text on a photo.  It appears that you have to export the photos from Aperture to the desktop to import the photos to iMovie to be able to add quite good text to individual photos. While I am new to the Apple system (I am quite knowledgable in Windows), I am surprised that iMovie cannot import an Album or a Project from Aperture.  It does not appears possible to to copy and paste from Aperture to the project created in iMovie without exporting to the desktop.  This seems like a step backwards.
Since I come from Windows I will be importing most of my photos into Lightroom3 and doing  most of my work.  Yet, there are features in Aperture that I like and will probably use both for the time being.  I am using Aperture 3 and iLife11.  New Macbook Pro

I read the manuals and watched the tutorials on the Apple web site as well as F1 in Aperture and never saw a reference to using Windows menu to list photos in iMovie.  I check this and it does seem to work.  however, you must admit that the procedure for adding text on a photo is limited as compare to iMovie.  Maybe, it is because I want to add text to a photo for posting on Mobileme or other photo posting sites so friends can view the photos in a slideshow or one by one.
I assume that you can answer this question. Since I was exporting photos to the desktop so I could import them in iMovie, if I delete the folder on the desktop will they disappear form the project in iMovie?  Since I do not like a lot of folders on the desktop can I move them to the Pictures folder and not loose the project links in iMovie?

  • Aperture 1.5: External editor not bringing image back into Aperture?

    Hi,
I am running Aperture 1.5 and have Noise Ninja installed as my external editor. I can successfully send an image from my Aperture library to NN and edit it there, but when I save the image, it is not brought back into Aperture. Further, if I try to send another image from Aperture to NN while NN is open, a new TIFF version is created in Aperture, but nothing opens up in NN.
I've been using Aperture and NN for about a year, and it has always acted like this, so I've basically given up on trying to use the External Editing feature in Aperture, but after some research it seemed like this shouldn't be as difficult as it has been for me.
Has anyone else had a problem like this and been able to resolve it? And does it matter that my files are referenced, and not stored in the Aperture library?
    Thanks all
    Burt

    Burt,
Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the same problem with Photoshop files not saving back into Aperture. I haven't been able to figure it out.

  • Book printing - Unique Workflows? - Cross-Posted from Aperture forum

(Cross-posted. I think this post might be of interest to iPhoto users as well)
I am exploring the book printing features in Aperture. My goal was to build the book in Aperture and get this into iPhoto so that I could use MyPublisher to print the book. MyPublisher currently has a 50% off coupon for orders over $50. iPhoto needs their plugin to upload to MyPublisher instead of Apple when the BuyBook button is chosen. (code is MAC2550 - good though Dec 31). The design features in Aperture are rudimentary at best. It's simple to customize the design for photo placement, adding and deleting photos, resizing, etc. The type design features are not simple to customize, though. However, with patience a suitable design can be made. You can add and delete text boxes at will but these will always default to the template's built in style. I continually had to reformat the type by right clicking on the selected text and applying my preferred style. One trick when cutting and pasting text is to place the cursor one letter in from the beginning of a preformatted line, select the remaining text and paste - this will pick up the current style rather than default to the template default. Then delete the leftover first character of the line. From Aperture I printed the book to PDF, being sure to choose letter size and borderless paper option. Once book is printed to PDF I opened in Acrobat and "saved as" to PNG. In the PNG options I chose 600ppi (the default of 300ppi might have been just fine for quality, not sure). Saving to PNG creates an individual file for each page. In testing Apple's Preview software for this I found it would make a nice PNG - but of just one page at a time. I then imported all PNG pages into iPhoto. Within iPhoto create a book. I used "Modern Lines" with double sided pages. To create the cover (it's actually a label that is adhered to the linen hard cover book) I had to import the actual cover photo used in Aperture to recreate a new design based on the "Modern Lines" template. I then recreated my pages using the template. The key step being to assign the single photo page design for each page. For each page I dropped in the corresponding PNG file which included all type and images created previously in Aperture. One minor point when adjusting the placed PNG images in the iPhoto template is the option to fit photo to frame size (an option when right clicking on the photo). When fit photo is selected the image gets resized very slightly. I opted not to use this feature as I thought the resizing might compromise quality. I then clicked on the "buy book" button and the file was assembled and sent to MyPublisher. Since I had the 50% coupon I opted for the leather bound book option and ordered two 24 page books for $53.74 which included $9.98 standard FedEx fee. As for quality I'll have to wait and see. I'll post back once books are in hand.

It is important to realize there are two aspects to an index.
    1) Topics
    2) Page References
Topics have no relation to the text of the actual document. Topics can
be imported from one InDesign document to another. Also, creating topics
from a list of text is trivial. Just type all the words (or place them
from a text document or Word doc) and then press Ctrl+A to select all of
them and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+[, then delete the text.
Page references, however are not as simple. These have to be created at
each place in the text where you want the page to be referenced it the
index. This *can* in fact be done Word if you are using the text from
    the Word document.
What you really have to watch out for is that when you want to create a
page reference you have the "Reference" radio button selected in the
index panel. Otherwise you will just be creating a topic. It is best to
work with hidden characters turned on so you can see and make sure
InDesign created an index marker in the text after you created your page
    reference.

  • IWeb and Aperture Galleries

I am wanting to use Aperture to create all my Web Photo Galleries. I currently have a fairly extensive iWeb site. Is there a way to export the Aperture gallery to iWeb? It would make sense right? What is the best way to intergrate the Web Gallery feature in Aperture with a pre-existing iWeb site?

I just finished putting a 38 page site together in iWeb. Most of it was a set of photos from a trip to the Amazon, Machu Picchu, and the Galapagos (http://web.mac.com/donoshea). All the the images on that site were imported into Aperture, adjusted and cropped there, and then exported to iWeb. The export method, however, was simply to drag the previews in the Aperture window, into the appropriate photo album window in iWeb.
I found while using this process, there are few precautions that should be taken. First, be sure that the preview size (bottom section of Preferences for Aperture) are large enough to display well on most monitors. I use "Fit within 1280 x 1280*). Second, update the previews and force a "Generate Previews" if any of the images were modified by an external editor, such as Photoshop.
So I built the site as I adjusted the image in Aperture. I tried the Aperture web galleries and found them too stolid for a personal and family web page.
One other advantage to using Aperture as a prep for iWeb is that after rating the images I thought I wanted on the web site, I grouped the logically or chronologically for display on the web pages, then stacked them for tidiness. If the stack was greater than 8 for a two-page spread, I either cut the number of images (just drop the rating below the selected one) or redistributed the images between stacks to tell the story.
I hope this may be of use to someone,
