Bryon

Bryon,
This would be a behaviour to expect if one inserts a blank CD, since the original iMac is not capable of (internally) burning discs.
Otherwise, provided that the operating system is complete and contains the necessary helper files, the iMac should be able to see/read many CDs (at least the ones formatted Mac, hybrid or ISO9660). You may encounter difficulties with some home-burned discs (it is usually better to use CD-R than CD-RW).
However, if you are trying to boot the iMac from a CD, that is another matter. A proper Mac system disc is needed. If you buy a new system CD, make sure that it is a generic/universal disc, not one intended for a certain (other) Mac model. Also, when starting from a CD, press the C key.

    Hi.
    I had a similar problem myself. This is what helped me.
    I went to the App store app, scrolled to the bottom, logged out of the account, re logged in with my Apple ID.  Then went back to app updates. Once I put in my ID password all was fine.

  • I bought a used 160GB ipod and I cant get my computer to read it. What do I need to do?

    I bought a used 160GB ipod and I cant get my computer to read it. What do I need to do?

    Is your iTunes running the latest version? If not, but the iPod you've bought has been set up to work with the latest version, then iTunes probably will not recognise it.
    In iTunes, select Help/Check for updates. If there is a newer version, make sure you are running that before connecting the iPod again.
    If that isn't the problem - or more to the point - it doesn't fix the problem, post here again so that anyone watching it can suggest the next step.

  • I CANT GET MY NANO OUT OF DISK MODE!!!!

    i accidentaly put my ipod into disk mode and now i cant get it out. I tried turning it off but it doesnt do anything
    no clue   Windows XP
    no clue   Windows XP

    I am having the same problem - IPOD Nano gets stuck in Disk Mode. It won't respond to Reset, just stays locked up. The restore works, but this is the third restore I had to do this week. Am I doing something wrong, or is the IPOD defective?
    Or is this a bug with the IPOD Nano software, as I see there are a lot of these posts, but reset seems to help many.

    anyone any ideas on where to go - i just want to rescue it as its a great machine
    arif

    You're almost there .... bring up disk utitlity again, choose the new hard drive, and choose partition, name the hard drive, choose format mac OS extended (journaled), give it a size (most likely the entire drive will be one partitition), and under options make sure Apple partition map is chosen. Click partition, and you should now be able to install Tiger.

  • Sees Printer, cant get a driver

    Hey everyone,
    Im trying to connect a printer (canon mx310) to the AEBS and it shows up on my mac as "canon mx310 series" and when i try to add it to my printer list it shows
    Name: Canon MX310 Series
    Location: (NAME OF MY AEBS)
    Print Using: Please select a driver or printer model
    the other options for print using is "auto select" ( which just ends up going back to please select a driver or printer model) and "select a driver" (which there is no printer driver in the list)
    i saw some other people on the forums got it to work...but now that i look i dont see the thread anymore
    thanks for the help
    by the way-
    when it is connected to the AEBS, windows computers cant connect either...
    if there is a way by connecting the printer to a windows computer and trying to share it tell me please(because there is no canon mx310 printer driver in the driver list)

    Try

  • Cant get iCloud on my mac, cant get iCloud on my mac

    on my mac it has mobile me but not iCloud. how do i get icloud on hear instead of mobile me????

    You can share Mail, Calenders, and Contacts running Snow Leopard. Based on my experience, I don't recomment syncing Contacts - created a lot of problems with duplicates.
    Snow Leopard iCloud - Address and iCal
    Snow Leopard iCloud –  iCal
    Snow Leopard iCloud - Configuring Mail with Mac OS X v10.6 or iOS 4

  • Mac-formatted FAT32 external drive: cannot read with windows

    I'm posting here in the hopes that it's a mac problem. I have 2 external drives, each USB and each very large (120+GB each). both contain a few files larger than 4 GB each. I formatted each drive using my Mac, one in Leopard and one previously in Tiger; each is FAT32 formatted and can be read easily with my Macbook in Leopard. I also have a 4GB flash drive that is FAT32 formatted, which was formatted using my Macbook.
    when I plug either drive into a Windows machine (Vista or XP Pro SP2) it goes through the new hardware wizard but the drives do not show up in Explorer. the disk management service shows the drives but they appear as "unallocated space" and cannot be accesed. the option I have when I right-click on the drive is "Initialize". I sold my Macbook and don't have access to it anymore, and even if I did, the process of moving all of these files (a total of ~150GB) to an FTP server and then onto my new Vista machine is not possible. the even weirder thing is that my FAT32 formatted flash drive shows up on any windows machine without a problem.
    Can someone explain what might have happened here? since the drives are both easily readable with any Mac (I've tried two, one with Leopard and one with Tiger) and they both show up in the Mac as FAT32 formatted, I can't imagine why they cannot be read with a Windows machine.

    You cannot give yourself full access when connected like this. It is not supported. the only way to access an NTFS device with write privileges is while it is connected to a Windows host. This is because your Mac doesn't know what to do with the ACL information. While it's connected to a Windows host, you can get at the share and use the host's information to authenticate to it.
    If you want to use it directly attached to the Mac, you need to have it formatted in a Mac readable format. Mac OS Journaled, HFS+, FAT32 among others... It'll need to be FAT if you want Windows to access it too though (and you can't set permissions on FAT drives like you can NTFS or HFS etc).

  • How do I get optical drive to read Windows 7 disk?

    The drive has been troublesome almost from the start (including a trip to the shop where it was replaced while still under warranty)...it'll recognize movie DVDs most times, the Snow Leopard install disk sometimes, the Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac all the time...and the Windows 7 64bit Home Premium OEM DVD disk, never.
    It's an early 2008 MacBook Pro (4,1), with an LG (I'm pretty sure) HL-DT-ST- DVDRW GSA-S10N with revision AP12.
    I put the disk in both a Windows laptop and our other MacBook Pro, and it's not the disk.  (Wish I knew enough to successfully use MBP 2's superdrive to install using Parallels on MBP 1's hard drive.)
    I've got to be missing something...

    Thanks so far for the 2.5 replies, but...I restarted computer and walked away to let it do its thing, came back and it looked like it was asleep.  Now, it won't start...period.  Push and hold power button, LED at front goes dark.  Push power button, small superdrive spin up, LED in lid release button goes bright, then dim, same black screen like computer is dead.
    I instinctively tried taking off power supply and removing battery...same results.  Came across instructions for a SMC re-set, did those...same results.
    Edit:  I even instinctively then tried removing one RAM module, to see if that would make it snap out of its funk.  Next I'll try unplug, removing battery and walking away...
    Ouch, perfect timing, as MBP1 just came off warranty a couple months ago.  Now I'm wondering if I even spend the $50 at Tech Advanced (no apple store nearby) to get the stupid thing evaluated (now it doesn't look like a superdrive problem, now it looks like some motherboard prob).
    sig, as far as bringing drive back...I'm sure that it (the replacement drive) is also out of warranty.  johnl927, I have no idea of what you speak.

  • Sharing and permissions, custom access, cant get user to have read and write acess

    Hello everyone, i have a Netgear Stora NAS on my MAC, its located in the finder under shared, when i click on it i sign in with my user account and it gives me my folders to my stora, on one of my folder (Movies), i clicked get info and under sharing and permissions it told me i had custom access, i changed the privelages of the name,"Everyone" from no access, to read and write, when i did this, the name on tope of this (the main username) vanished. so ive been searhing on how to get my privelages back, i went to + and added new GROUP "admins" and it gave me my main username back but now with read only acess, when i try to change it to read and write it dissapears, PLEASE HELPPPPP, thank you!!!!
    <Edited by Host>

    I am not sure why you get that error. One thing you can do is a SMC reset then try to format it again. However that being said I'm not fan of WD external HD's primarily because we see a lot of troubles with them on Macs. Their internal HD's are fine so that narrows it down to their enclosures. If the problem persists I'd return the drive and buy one of the following:
    OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series
    G-Tech G series
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Cant Get My Program to Read a Text File

    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.text.DecimalFormat;
    public class Calculator
        public static void main (String[] args)
            final String filepath = "calculator.txt";
            int a, b, x;
            String command;
            Scanner fileScan = new Scanner(new File(filepath));
            while (fileScan.hasNext())
                command = fileScan.nextLine();
                System.out.println(command);
    }Thats the code I have so far. I have an input file called "calculator.txt" which I made in notepad then copy/pasted into the same folder that this Calculator.java file is located. The build fails and sends this error:
    unreported exception java.io.FileNotFoundException; must be caught or declared to be thrown
    What am I doing wrong that it cant read the file?

    "Exceptions" are written about and described in any Java book and they all contain plenty of example.
    Your code shows no attempt whatsoever to handle an Exception. So the original answer assumed you didnt' know what an Exception was and gave you a resource to read.
    It you would spend the time reading your text or the tutorial given instead of wasting time with these ridiculous comments you would have had your answer by now.
    We don't have time to write a personal explanation about what an Exception is. We would only be duplicating what is in the book and tutorial.
    On the other hand if your code acutally contained some code that resembled an attempt to catch an Exception, then you might have been given more specific help. If you don't understand that concept then you will have trouble getting answers in the forum.
    Did you even search the forum to see if any other posting had a question about that Exception?

  • Cant get caller id to read out on BT, but reads text fine

    I just got a LG 260 bluetooth and it reads the text out fine. I have turned on the driving mode and have it set up to read phone calls but all it does is ring in my ear. I tried to go into phone, settings, then additional settings but I do not have the caller id stuff on that screen, only noise reduction. Anyone know how to fix this so it reads out the name of the person calling?

  • Cant get my classic to read...

    I have a 30 gb ipod classic and i got it from a friend. The only cord i have is the one from my nano video and it worked fine with the nano. With the classic it wont read anything on itunes and it wont charge. the battery symbol has the lightning bolt in it and it flashes green and grey and doesnt charge. Do different versions use different cords?

    Ok, i just looked there and its a 5 generation ipod. And it is charging through the usb, but the computer isnt picking up the ipod at all. Heres some things ive done already. I restarted my computer, restarted the ipod, reset the settings, got the most current itunes, went through the steps apple suggested in the administrative tools section to check that my usb drivers were up to date. tried a new cord, tried plugging it in on a new computer. i noticed when i looked up the ipod on the usb drivers that it wasnt in there under any of the names that apple said it might, it just wasnt there at all. like i said, it is charging but it isnt being read or even picked up by my computer.
