Necessary Idea for iTunes: Playlist Profiles

If Apple is going to commit to the 10 gig or less standard for iPods and iPhones, then I strongly believe they need to add an enhancement to syncing music devices to iTunes which currently does not exist: Playlist Profiles. For example, I have a 2 gig iPod Nano. I know, I'm cheap - I don't have a 30 or 60 gig which just automatically syncs my whole music collection. I figure I can put about 500 songs on there. Now let's just face it - 500 songs... it's a lot, but there's going to be times when my tastes will change but I won't want to spend a lot of time swapping around playlists and trying to keep track of the best collections without "going over" and without there being left over space.
SO - What would be really great is if you could save sync profiles - Not just a gym playlist, but a gym profile. Not just a study playlist, but a study profile. Not just a work playlist, but a work profile. So that you could literally swap out all the playlists with new ones, but keep the old synced playlists 'remembered' - it could even be so detailed so that on Mondays or during work hours it would sync to a certain profile, on Saturdays or during evening ours it would automatically sync to a different profile.
I know that this wouldn't be to difficult a thing to do; the only serious problem that I can think of is that it would definitely encourage a lot more rewriting of the flash drives than perhaps they are designed for, but I'm sure that's not a huge deal.
This addition to iTunes will be especially important if Apple decides to really stick with an under 10 gig format for a significant portion of its devices, i.e. Nanos, Shuffles, and iPhones, as (I would think) most people's iTunes collections tend to stray between 8 and 20 gigs, and therefore the majority of iPod users who don't have regular iPods are consistently unable to sync their entire music collection.

Hello. If you have a good suggestion for iTunes, don't post it here where developers are unlikely to see it. Instead, go to the Mac OS X tab above and then Feedback and then send your suggestion about iTunes. There's nothing we fellow users can do to help you here with your suggestion.

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • Ideas for iTunes

Just a few ideas for the next version of iTunes.
-Tags: right now, one can only select one genre for a specific piece of music. Allowing tags to be added, or multiple categories, would allow browsing and searching to be much more accurate. The same thing goes for artists. I recognize that notes could be used for this purpose, but I think something more systematic would be better.
-Ratings: 0-5 stars? Great. Add another level, and limit the number of tracks it can be applied to. Call it "Favorites." Limit it to 10 or 20 tracks (or give the user the option to set a limit). You could also use this in the iTunes store, identifying the tracks most people name as "favorites" (of course, this would also work with 5 stars).

Both of your suggestions can be implemented to some extent using smart playlists.
For multiple genres, you can add additional genres as keywords in Grouping or Comments. You would then set your conditions so the "Match Any", "Genre is X" and "Grouping contains Y" Check Live Updating.
The work-arounds for your ratings idea is not quite as simple. To increase the number of ratings levels you would have to add your own ratings system using the Groupings or Comments fields. To limit the number of tracks with a certain rating would take two playlists. The first one, named, say, "Favorites", would have the conditions "My Rating is 5 stars" and "Limit to 20 songs selected by most often played" with Live Updating. To see if you have tagged more than 20 songs with a 5-star rating, create a second smart playlist with the conditions "Match All", "My Rating is 5 stars" and "Playlist is not Favorites" with Live Updating. You would have to manually change the ratings in this second playlist.
Multiple genres is not something set up in the standardized tagging system used in digital music, so Apple would have to create something proprietary which would not be recognized if you loaded your music in another player.
This is the first time I have seen a request for limiting the number of songs for a rating. As many more common requests have not yet been implemented, I do not see Apple implementing this request, but you should still request it so they can make the decision.

  • I idea for iTunes!

I buy music and movies from iTunes but some times I don't want to spend the money right that sec, can you add a wish list for iTunes or some kind of flag. With out that I have to start over each time,  also in the app page I want this app but want to hold off for what ever reason from buying it! !
    What you think?

There is, and has been, a wish list.

  • Idea for iTunes: Slideshow for "Now Playing" (new suggestion for multiple artwork in one song)

As some may know, you can put more than one album art (picture) in a song. When it's done, the "Now Playing" window, which usually showcases the artwork of the song playing, would have a small right/left arrow beside it. When pressed, you switch to a new artwork.
However with the recent updates on iTunes, that arrow button's disappeared. Now it's as pointless as ever to put multiple pictures. My purpose with this feature is to put album covers and the single artwork together, only if they are the first tracks of whichever album. (Yes, I like to stare at the album covers while listening to music).
IDEA - Why not have the "Now playing" window fade between pictures like a slideshow? So for example, Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" album's 1st track "Mr. Know It All", a single that bears its own artwork. Putting the album and single cover in the song while playing, they'd alternate between pictures every 5 seconds.
I just think that if you can put more than one picture in a song, might as well make use of it. There are a lot of albums that have singles as track no.1. Some have a great single artwork but can't be shown because it needs the album cover. This would make a great compromise. It might even be more neat to put a real life picture of you or someone or a place you know because the song reminds you of .
    What do you guys think?
(Say is this normally the way to suggest them ideas or do I just e-mail them a customer support form?)

  • Multiple page PDF's for iTunes playlists

In the past I've been able to create multiple page PDF's of playlists, but for some reason in iTunes 10.1 it will only show me the first page. At the bottom of that page it'll say page 1 of 10, but the other 9 pages do not appear in the sidebar. I also know it's not generating multiple pages because when I save it to the desktop it appears instantly instead of taking a few seconds to process many pages.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks!

When you save a PDF out of Illustrator and turn Illustrator editability on, what do you think Illustrator should do? It can only save content in its native format. For version CC, this is Illustrator CC. Illustrator CS6 doesn't know CC, so can't open it. Instead it opens the PDF part of the file, which happens to be mutliple pages.
If you need to establish this kind of workflow, you need to make sure, everyone uses the same version.
Understanding Illustrator's file formats is crucial:

  • AMAZING NEW IDEA for iTunes!!

I think iTunes would be so much better with a little arrow that shows what playlist is playing! So you will always know!
Check out the arrow by Genius below.
Replace that arrow with a fancy Apple Arrow, and its the best thing to ever happen to iTunes!
I hope this is seriously considered.
    What does everyone think?

+"the best thing to ever happen to iTunes!"+
Hmmm not so sure about it being the best thing to ever happen to iTunes, but it's not the worst idea in the world either. Which is why iTunes sort of already has something similar. When you are listening to any song, on any album or any playlist, you can click the "Go Back" arrow to the right of the track name at the top and it will return you back to the playlist that is currently playing.
It's not the same, but it's similar.
I also wouldn't recommend they put an arrow next to a playlist since a sideways arrow signifies a dropdown menu or a folder (like the arrow next to "Anthony Rey's Library" in your posted example). Rather maybe sound sound waves (3 curved lines) coming out the left side of a playlist would help show what playlist was playing.

  • R&D idea for iTunes

As I am currently trying to burn a cd from a playlist I created, I began thinking "What if i could create a sublist inside my playlist that would allow me to designate the songs i wished to burn to a cd by either 1)Checking "on" a button that would designate a song to burn and/or 2)being able to create a division within the playlist ("Please designate the first x amount of songs for burning")".
    Anybody feeling me?

hmmmmm. we've almost got that functionality already in itunes. if you uncheck the checkbox next to a song in a playlist, it won't burn when you burn the playlist.

  • An idea for iTunes stores in NZ, Aus & SA

perhaps you could buy the rights to stream the super14 rugby games? I could buy a season pass for one team and all their games would be downloaded....perhaps with some extra interviews etc....
Also the world cup is this year for Rugby
after all Rugby Union is the toughest game in the world....you dont wear helmets and shoulder pads to play

You can request it through the iTunes request page. Make sure you indicate that you're referring to the NZ iTunes Store.
Note that it will depend in large part on whether the owners of the broadcast rights to those games are willing to license them for sale. If they aren't, there won't be anything Apple can do.

  • Idea for iTunes

What do you think about iTunes getting something like Google Trends? You could see what is your favorite music, your music most listened, the most popular music that is in your library, etc.

    I just signed up.
You upload your iTunes library.xml file to get the stats.
The updload page states, "Sorry about the ridiculously long upload times. We're trying to think of ways to improve it."
Seems to take a (long) while to kick in and then a (long) while to upload the file.
Looks like it's going at ~25Kbps.

It appears to be a bug with the current build. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next release.
