Need 900mHz G3 iBook Hardware Test CD/Program

Greetings:
I'm coming up empty with my written requests to Apple and search on eBay for a 900mHz G3 iBook Hardware Test CD which didn't come with my eBay purchased iBook. Can anyone point me to any sources for one? I hope being a pre-owned Mac user doesn't make you any less an "legit" Mac user in Apple's eye. Be much appreciative!
James Greenidge

I would suggest that you _call Apple_ and ask for Legacy Hardware Support. Give them your serial number and ask if they have the system CD's that originally came with the iBook and, if so, how much they will charge to send them to you.
Good luck.

  • Sources for G3 Ibook Hardware test and Installation Disks

    Greetings All!
Subject says it all. I bought my 14" 900mHz G3 iBook with insurance off eBay last Feb and it's been working just great (just know how to handle it like a baby!). Since it came without the Hardware test and installation CDs in case of emergency, what source options do I have?
    Thanks!
    James Greenidge

You may want to try _calling Apple_ to see if they have the CD's available. If they do, they will send them to you (for a fee).

  • Need to perform a hardware test, but pressing D during startup is fruitless

I've got some sort of glitch I need to work through.  I'm assuming it's hardware related, and I directly suspect the GPU, or maybe a lose connection thereto (symptoms are coming and going).  Symptoms coincided directly with an OSX update to 10.9.4, but that might just be incidental.  Unfortunately, upon startup, I can't load into the Hardware Tester/Diagnostics tool... pressing 'D' during startup leads me to looking at a grey screen for about half a minute, then the MBP just decides to load into OSX.  I've tried to perform this test about ten times now - same result each time.
Here's a couple of pictures of my screen when the issue is playing up.  It's obviously rendering the computer unusable:

I'm trying for a combo update reinstall of 10.9.4 right now.  But if you have any other advice i'm all ears.

Yes.   In one of those photos i've provided it's the OSX recovery screen that is bugging out.  I seem to have a 50/50 hit rate in getting through - like I said - the symptoms are coming and going.  Once within OSX recovery menu i've fired up disk utilities to make sure i'm not dealing with a dying HD - disk utility is suggesting my HD is in perfect health and perfect working order.
I just followed through with reinstalling the 10.9.4 combo update too - I still can't perform a hardware test.

  • Need to run a hardware test on MBP4,1, 17" OS 10.5.8 w/out disc?

I have a macbook pro with the following specs:
    - 17inch macbook pro 4,1, 2. 5 GHz
    - non-unibody (released sometime in 2008)
    - OS 10.5.8
My battery recently expanded and 'exploded', so i bought a new one (from macsales.com) and replaced it. battery works fine.
    I also upgraded my RAM: from 2GB to 6GB (1 x 2GB, 1 x 4GB).
    I have two issues now:
    1) I have a birdlike chirping sound that occurs randomly and not often. I had similar sounds prior to my battery expanding and going bust. However, now that I've bought a new battery, I have a concern that it might be something else in the hardware.
    2) I would like to upgrade my OS to mavericks; but first, I understand that i have to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) before upgrading to anything.
I would like to know the following:
    a) I would like to run a hardware test to diagnose it and find out what the sounds are from and also a general check up before i actually upgrade OS.
However, I don't have my installation discs because I moved country and it was a long time ago.
How can i run a hardware test and check my laptop without a disc?
    b) since i'm not in the US, how can i buy the Snow Leopard? is there an option for buying when outside of the US? I can't seem to find it.
    thanx for your help

  • Need a Hardware Test Disk

I need to get a hardware test disk for my Powerbook to check on a speaker hiss/static problem. I can't seem to find where I can order one. I searched the online store but the search comes up empty.

That's the Apple Hardware Test 1.2.3 for 14" PB G3s with FireWire ports and 15" Titanium PB G4s. I don't believe it will work with a 12" Aluminum G4, which requires at least the higher version that originally came with it. The earliest 12" PB G4 came with AHT 2.0.2, and later ones with higher versions.
It may still be possible to order a replacement AHT disk for your machine directly from Apple, by telephone only. Call Customer Relations at 1-800-767-2775 and ask. Have your Powerbook's serial number handy when you call.

  • Hard drive issues; how to run hardware test

A couple of weeks ago my hard drive experienced what I would call "minor crashes". The computer booted up to the grey box with the question mark, and would do nothing more. The hard drive also made unpleasant noises. I think I got it back by resetting PRAM, but it happened a second time, and then a PRAM reset again got it back. Needless to say, I'm nervous about this drive.
I have Apple Care until January '09 (this is an '06 Intel machine) and figure I should try to move on figuring out what's up ASAP (both because I don't want a drive failure, and because I only have a few more months of Care).
I'm guessing that I should run the extended hardware test, but I can't seem to get it going using the Leopard disk I used to upgrade the OS. Do I need the original install disks (which I can't find, of course!)? What else can I do to determine if I have an issue that calls for hard drive replacement? If I need a new hard drive (it now seems small at 250gb anyhow), will I be able to do it myself (assuming Apple Care won't take care of it)?
    Any insights welcome. Thanks!

Give it a try, if not you'll need to dig up your Disk 1!
+Some Intel-based Macs ship with Apple Hardware Test and Mac OS X 10.4.x preinstalled on the hard drive. If an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is performed using a retail Leopard installation disc, Apple Hardware Test will be erased and not reinstalled on these Macs.+
+If you're in this situation and need to use Apple Hardware Test, simply start from the DVD that came with your computer (not the Leopard installation disc) while holding the "D" key. Apple Hardware Test will run from the DVD.+

  • My iMac G5 will not run Hardware Test. Please help!!

I need to run a hardware test for two reason:
    1. ethernet stopped working [airport does work]
    2. if the computer falls asleep it won't wake up
So, I want to find out if it's a hardware or software issue. Problem is, when i try to boot up the Hardware Test nothing happens. The computer starts up normally as if I didn't have the disk in at all.
I am following the instructions in the Hardware test "Read Me" file...put the OS X install disk in & restart holding down the "D" button. The startup screen flashes 2 different colors of grey and then just boots up normally. If I try holding "option" when I restart I get to a screen with the hard drive & the disk as choices to boot, but if I choose the disk I get a really weird screen of text talking about kernel panic & a bunch of stuff I don't know about on top of the grey crash screen telling me to restart.
So after this long-winded question does anyone have any idea what I should do? THANKS!!

    Try using Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • Run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) from a external drive possible?

Hi my DVD drive is dead and i need to do a hardware test now but my macbook pro spits the dvds out., does anyone have experience with running AHT from external drive ?

    macjack wrote:
What are you using AHT for specifically? Could you instead use a utility like Rember for checking RAM, which does a better job IMO than AHT?

i got it back from a authorized apple center that replaced the logic board and video card but now my dvd drive does not work and i can not test it with the original dvds, it was a recall on apples part for a faulty video card.
i want to test the v card as well as anything else i can do to see if someone snatched the original dvd drive becuase this thing was working before i took it there

  • Running Apple Hardware Test... without ability to see the screen

Here's a nice conundrum- my screen isn't working. I want to run Apple Hardware Test, but since I can't see it... no dice.
I'm pretty sure this is the NVidia 8600GT problem- Apple has acknowledged that these graphics cards are defective. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
The only way I can get into the computer is to use screen share- I've tried an external monitor, and it doesn't work. And I can't screen share when the apple hardware test is running- any idea how to see this? Another option- is there anyway I could start it without seeing anything, and then look at the results later? Are the results saved in Console or anywhere?
    Thanks1

I dont think you need to do a hardware test.
Its the 8600 video cards, thats why Apple extended the warranty on the cards. Just bring it to the Genius Bar and they will sort it out for you.

  • PB 17 Hardware Test CD

I need to do a hardware test on my first gen PB 17 1ghz. Seems like I have misplaced the Hardware Test CD that came with it. Is there somewhere I can down load it and burn it to a CD or DVD??

    Dale,
Thanks for that download link. I wasn't aware that a hardware test disk was shipped with the original PowerBook G4-17. I'm not aware of any shipping with mine. I'll try this on mine, if I can get it to start on it.
If you haven't ordered your MacPro yet, try this: http://tinyurl.com/2humoj. That's my apple store. I won't get rich if you order from me, but a MacPro order would just about finish raising the money to replace my PowerBook with a MacBookPro
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Can I Use my eMac Hardware Test CD to test my G3 900mHz iBook?

    Hi All!
Can I use my 1.25 mhz eMac's Hardware Test CD to test my G3 900mHz iBook? I'm getting different answers from people who haunt the forums on MacLife and MacNN and MacWorld, saying that it might or might not work or that the test programs aren't any different, and some say the Hardware test on TechTools covers all Macs so same's true of Apple test CDs. Since this is the Apple site I'm taking it to the horse's mouth here. What's the story?
    Thanks!
    Trudi

    Rhonda,
To me, the way you rub shoulders with regular Apple users here is the way Apple people ought connect with their public. I'm not asking or expecting Apple PR/Tech/Admin to chat or even talk at all on these (their own...) forums, but it's dismaying to me that only one Apple guy/gal ever drops by on a blue moon to eavesdrop (much less comment) on any non-PR department filtered real-world qualms or feedback their own customers have. That you care enough for Apple's own customers manyfold over what Apple ought be doing CSR-wise sans pay makes me tip my hat to you and I hope some Mac magazine picks you up as a stringer consultant if not outright employee.

  • Need help: my Ibook fell and can't get up! (screen dim, have run tests)

Cross posted from displays, but I have found it is not a "display" issue:
(also, not quite sure where this should "go", mods feel free to move to a more appropriate forum)
First: I have searched and tried several things...
OK, I took a fall commuting on my bike and my poor Ibook, nestled away it its laptop holder in my backpack, suffered the consequences (not to mention the road rash on my elbow and knee- but that is for a different forum).
When I pulled it out I found that the lid does not close securely. Then when I opened it I found the issue of the text being white and background as very dark. After some searching I found this to be the nocturnal mode and switched it off.
Then the problem was that the display was VERY dim. I can use the machine but it is like using it on the (near) lowest brightness setting. I hooked the machine up to the projector unit in a classroom and it projects the same as the display. So, its not an issue with the display itself (me thinks).
I tried to do a PMU reset (shift, control, option, power) and it seems to have done nothing.
Are there other ideas? Next steps. I can cope with the computer like this as it is generally my writing machine, but a fix would be nice. Also, I am concerned about whether or not it may be a logic board problem flesh wound which is waiting to one day die on me. I am doing backups often just in case...
    Any help would be great.
    Edit Update:
Everything has worked as normal except the display for the past 2 weeks.
I ran the Hardware Test Diagnostic Disc and NO issues were found, everything passed.
As there are no hardware issues found I am considering backing up and reformatting to see if this may do the trick.
Really any help would help. I am tentative paying for a fix as I bought it four years ago from apple refurb site for $700 and if it needs a pro fix I would consider putting the money into a new machine.
    Thanks!

Actually, I don't think it could be the backlight because I can see the contents of the display without a flashlight. In fact indoors I can still see it well enough as long as the room is dim. And I can still back the brightness off a bit with the brightness adjustment button (F1).

  • Ibook g4 late hardrdware test or fresh installation, strange thing is will accept every item on disk 1 accept clean installation or hardware test, give me a clue please, thanks robin u/k.

Have a iBook G4 14' 142 ghz early 2006 owned since new, have had no problems in the past to do a clean installation or a hardware test. Find I cannot do these now, strange that I can do all other checks, tests etc on Disk one but not the ones I have listed, Strange, give me a clue please, Robin U/K.

This iBook came originally with Mac OSX 10.4.2 or 10.4.4 installed and on the disks. Since you have upgraded to 10.5.8 I am guessing there is some kind of reluctance for a retrograde OS installation. I would start up from disk 1 and under utilities see if Disk Utility will allow you to erase or re partition the drive. Then do the 10.4.x installation. First be sure to backup any data of value.

I own an Imac G5.  It is running very slow.  Did hardware test and got an error code 2STF/8/3:S-ATABUSO-Master.  What is my next step?
Also how do i run disk first aid on the computer off of the install disks?  Which disk do i do it from.  Thanks in advance. Stuart

Sounds like your hard drive it about to die.
    I would backup ASAP.
To run First Aid on your disk, you need to boot from the install DVD for your Mac.
After selecting the language, open Disk Utiltity and repair the disk.
If it reports errors that DU is unable to repair, report them here and we will provide additional help.
