Need a bit of advice please

I have a couple of swf that I use on my iweb site. Can someone explain to me if there is a significant advantage to using the swf file directly or to use an html file that accesses the swf.
The html is of course lighter but it still has to make the swf work, so, do I save load time?
I am not understanding the function of the html generated when I publish the flash file.

In my samples I use the iframe/object element to display a HTML page within iWeb. You can also use the object/embed code to display the flash file in the HTML Snippet
The html filesize is only a few hundred bytes. But it depends on the flash file whether it's better to use a HTML page or the object code with the flash file.
Sometimes there's a problem with the relative path to the flashvars when using object in the HTML Snippet. Then a HTML page is better.
Also, when you make changes to the object or HTML code in the HTML page, you do not have to update the HTML snippet in iWeb.

Need a bit of advice regarding sync

Hi all,
Just looking for a wee bit of advice. I've got my son an ipod touch 4 for Christmas and was wonder how to set up itunes for him. He's only 7 and so I was going to add him to my itunes account so I can add something like a fiver a month for him to use for apps/games on it or something like that. However, I don't want it to synch to my iphone. Is there a way to stop that or should I set him up an email and set up a new account for him?

In itunes you can set up allowances, for the article about them: type HT2105 in the search bar on this website when support is clicked and you should get the article to pop up on how to set up allowances.

A Bit Of Advice Please.

First off I'm new here, so hello all.
Please bare with me as I'm not very good with all this sort of thing so I hope I at least can be understood.

I've been with BT for almost 4 years now and have to say I'm more than happy with the service.
Up untill about 10 days ago my broadband speed varied ( Depending on the time of day ) from about 4900 -7500 kbps (Download) and the upload never went above 348kbps.
Over the last 10 days my download has never gone below 8450kbps and my upload has slowly increased from 348, 755 and today after doing a speed test its registering 969kbps,I'm gathering my BT exchange has been upgraded?
The problem is though since I've noticed these speed increases, on average I'm dissconecting every 1/2 - 2 hours, I can re connect straight after so not a real problem just slightly annoying.
I've had one person tell me I need to phone BT as the faster your line the more unstable it can be so I might need to get BT to turn it down slightly to make it more stable? but someone else has said just give it upto a few weeks for the line to settle down and it should be ok!
So before phoning BT, I thought I'd ask the advice of the people on here.
I'm based in Newport ( On the Isle Of Wight ) and I'm using the BT Homehub 2.0.

After an upgrade of service it can take up to about 10 days for the line to determine the fastes speed it can support safely just leave the hub on 24 7 and see how it goes

Pavillion dv6-2150 needs a larger HD; advice please

I need a new hard drive with more space on my Pavillion dv6-2150 laptop. It reports 284GB total space. Where on the HP site should I go to find suitable replacements for this model?
Also, since it was bought used and I have no W7 64bit disk, if I replace the HD will I have to buy W7 or is there a way to put the existing OS (maybe from the D: recovery drive??) on the new hard drive?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Im not planning any oc'ing. I just do a lot of fractal program rendering. I was looking at the ram i mentioned as I had spotted that Super Talent had been tested whilst on my travels looking for the Kingston that had been tested. Whilst the Super Talent piece i found wasnt the same as the tested Super Talent piece, it was in a special offer (i could get 2gb with my budget) so before I just went off and bought it, i decided to ask the question and get the pro's views.

Long and short i just got a new HP and i knew for gaming i was gonna need to bump up the video card for my gamin experience. FYI, its the HP modle number A4317C. Amd Athalon 2.7GHz, 4 gig ram, and i think 500g HD, anyway. i am looking at 2 cards at bestbuy.com. both are nvidea, and i should be able to use them both, please tell me if i am wrong. here are the cards:

Well, lemme make sure I am clear on the difference between DVI and hdmi.... The video card has the old school VGA plug, a flat hdmi plug, and a goofy sideways pinned lookin plug( looks like the VGA but with an extra flat/sideways pin), However... My monitor only has a VGA plug and a flat hdmi plug, so should I get a dvi to hdmi adaptor or should I buy a hdmi cable?? Or just scratch both and stay with the VGA cable..... Now we are still back to the 2 video cards.... Do I dump the $160 or do I go cheap and get the card for $110.... I guess what I am lookin for is someone to tell me that the $160 card is the way to go cause it's a wicked sweeet vid card....

Quick bit of advice please!

Hi, I'm looking to record my band on sunday using my MacBookPro & Logic Pro and dumping the session on a external FW800 Lacie 500G HD but it's only a 5600rpm drive. I'm looking at 11 or 12 audio tracks, should the drive be OK for this, i.e fast enough?

Alas changing the timezone then changing back didnt work either. Good idea though. I have a 3 month rota which i enter into iCal on the Macbook Pro (because it's easiest on there) and it populates the ical on my iPad, my iphone 5 and also the iPhone 4s which is my wife's. (I feel as if I am keeping Apple in business singlehandedly!) On the iPad, and the Iphone 5 the iCal data is identical to the Macbook Pro but on the iPhone all the "all day" events run from 12noon one day through to 12 noon the next day. It's a bit weird and must surely be something to do with the default setting for "all day' on the 4s but for the life of me i cant find how to alter that. Everything else on the 4s seems to sync perfectly (ie contacts etc).

Need a bit of advice before I update to Win7, or perhaps throw my laptop through a wall

I've got a month-old G60, and Vista just crashed (blue screen on any non-safe-mode boot-up) and I was wondering if I will be able to install windows 7 to a computer in this state. The reason I ask is that I don't want to have to take it into a repair-shop, considering that windows 7 ships on wednesday and I might be able to solve the problem with a new OS. Just so you know, I tried system restore at various restore points to no avail, and I have no recovery discs because the disc creation program would not work before this happened--and, again, I would rather not have to purchase new discs when a new OS would fix it.
Any reply would be repaid a hunderdfold in warm fuzzy karma, I`m sure.

Have you tried pressing F10 for the System Recovery at the very beginning of the startup. That should take you to the option to reformat your computer to the way you bought it and you might loose your files.
Either way it might erase your files if you do the upgrade because it will bring everything from vista to 7 and the error might do or disrupt something. So the best way is to reformat the computer and then do the upgrade or do a Custom install and that should put all the files in windows.old and you can grab what you want from there and when you did you can delete that folder as it takes too much space if there is nothing you need. But you will need to install all the programs from there and in the folder swsetup, the programs that came with HP should be there.

Building out dynamic app, need a bit of advice

I have been working on a flex app, that makes users sign in. This is done by checking their username and password against those defined in a mysql database. A field in this database is "ID" which is a unique, a primary key, to that user.
THe app should then display data only relating to that person.
At the moment i have the app working fine, if in my scripts i define an "ID" number to look for.
I will try to explain some more . .
I am using AMFPHP to popular datagrids with data taken from the same mysql database that was used to log in. These scripts being used, pull back data only relating to a certain "ID" at the moment this is built into the script.
I want to have it so when the user logs in, flex takes their ID number and then pushes that to all other relevant scripts that are loading data. SO then when a user logs in, only their data is shown. As all data in the database is linked to an ID.
For instance:
If i had the following users table - used to log in

And then the following data table - used to display data

Is it possible to have it so, you log in, using a php script, and then your ID is returned, then fed into some AMFPHP scripts, which will be used to determine which strings you can see?
So that Bob can see String 1 2 and 5 while Carl can see 3 4 and 6

The work of filtering the data for the particular user should be done by PHP/MySQL or whatever other server-side solution you may be using. It's best to have your have your Flex app be ignorant of details such as this. On the Flex end, keep it simple by assuming that the data provided is correct and go straight to plugging it in (of course with some exception handling).
You probably don't want to be passing that user id around in the open. Make use of PHP sessions.

Down the left side of my page is a list of services, I want a
mouseover action on each of these services to cause the HTML text
to the right of the services list to change to an explanation of
that service, and to change the picture to the right of that text
(in yet another cell) to a picture of that service. So one
mouseover will cause both of the two neighboring table cells to
change their content. THE TEXT IS IN HTML and cannot be an image
for SEO purposes.
The second question regards a different page. I have text
that is too big for its table cell. I was wondering how to put a
scroll bar in a table cell.
If anyone knows the answer or can point me in the right
direction it would be so helpful!!

Your going to have to use some kind of layer/s for that.
Use 'settextofLayer' under the 'behaviours' in Dreamweaver.

Im going to buy a new Mac soon.
Im probably going to purchase the iMac Intel Core Duo 2GHz, but Ive recently heard about a Mac Pro.
What is this, when will it be released (I heard its yet to be released) and will it be superior to a MacBook pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo (In terms of playing Battlefield 2) ?

I just purchased a new iMac Core Duo. Speaking about current Apple products I can tell you I feel I made a mistake.
I am reminded of what an old Navy Master Chief once told me. "Ensign, never fly the 'A' model of any airplane." The same thing applies to computers.
In my experience this machine does not have all the bugs worked out. I am very disappointed in its performance, most of which seem to be hardware/quality control related.
Apple phone tech support is its usual high quality, and I certainly have no complaints about their efforts, but they have been unable to resolve my problems, and there are similar unanswered problems posted on the Core Duo Discussions.
If you have a Mac that is getting the job done for you, I would wait until they work the bugs out of this one. For a list of all the problems folks are having with the new Core Duos check that discussion board.

After that, I'll store the drive until I can afford to get an external OWC case for it.
I want to use the second new drive for a Photoshop Scratch disk and for temp video file work.
Under 10.3.9 - I use:
Photoshop CS2
Toast 7
Popcorn 1.0.3
VisualHUB
On occasion I still boot into OS 9 for Photoshop 5.5., QuarkXPress 3.2.2 r5 and Adobe Illustrator 7.
I don't foresee being able to afford a Mac Pro and don't want to get a used G5 anytime
soon. I'm hoping my G4 will last me a few more years.
I suspect putting a ATA/100 drive on the ATA/66 Bus might hamper performance. And suspect using a SATA controller card in a "PCI" slot isn't as good as having a True SATA Bus, performance wise either.
I was just wondering which would be the better way to go for performance and stability?
The drives will be probably OEM either at OWC or NewEgg.

With those applications and the intended purpose for the 2d drive, i.e. video and PS scratch, then go SATA. No question, best performance (without considering the cost of SCSI) to be found with SATA even using a PCI SATA controller. PATA been left behind, no ones doing development anymore.
I would suggest partitioning that 2d drive because PS and FS scratch disks are different in kind. FS needs unfragmented media, otherwise dropped frames and sync issues. PS scratch media are temporary and messy.
Depending on the drives and card, SATA drives should bench (with something like Intech QuickBench) at the high end of around 80-90 MB/sec. I haven't bought a PATA HD in years, but best I ever saw was around 60 MB/sec. 80-90 MB/sec is still very good even if say you can bench better in Mac Pro.
The Siig card you're considering is solid. I've used it in both 10.4 and 10.5, but only used it to boot in 10.4.x, never in Leopard. I had some issues with it my others cards, but easily solved by swapping placement.
I also have the two-port Sonnet Tempo, which is actually just a purple Firmtek Seritek 2-port card. I bought the Siig first, having to get it (and a bunch of other stuff) shipped overseas. I later bought the Sonnet because I could get it locally although for a higher price; with overseas taxes, customs, etc. for only the card --- it's a wash.
Anyway, I have two WD SE16 750GB drives in my MDD 1.25 Dual, which were originally on the Siig. With the Siig, QuickBench (I run the big 100MB files) showed 70+ MB/sec Read, around 55+ MB/sec Writes. I was a bit disappointed about the Writes. When the Sonnet arrived, I swapped and ran QuickBench again. With the Sonnet I see both Reads and Writes at 80+ MB/sec.
So as far as benchmarks go, the Sonnet/Firmtek wins. (I know Firmtek has a line of internal cards, including a 4 port version.) But I can't say I noticed any huge difference in everyday tasks. I had some sleep issues with Sonnet/Firmtek in 10.4.x, which was solved by downgrading the firmware.
I have FC Studio, but I capture to externals via eSATA.
I still have the Siig, it's in my MDD 1.0 Dual used as a file and Time machine server. Has a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB on it which doesn't bench to well on the Siig, but I haven't tried bench testing it with the Sonnet.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?

Could someone give me a bit of advice on ACLs please

I am trying to get ACLs working on a packet tracer network for a college assignment but I'm hitting brick walls and could do with some advice please!
I need to create an ACL that will allow web traffic from a host on one LAN to an internal webserver on a separate LAN and external webserver. I have tried the following ACL applied to the inbound interface of the router the host is connected to but it keeps failing.
My extended ACL looks like the following;
access-list 150 permit tcp any host 172.40.56.254 eq domain - (this is the internal DNS server address)
access-list 150 permit tcp any host 172.40.56.254 eq www - (this is the internal HTTP server address | www.jrt.com)
access-list 150 permit tcp any host 192.168.16.2 eq www - (this is the external HTTP server address)
When I try www.jrt.com in the browser in simulation mode when the packet hits the router I get the red envelope with "1. The device sends back an ICMP Administratively Prohibited Unreachable message."
What am I doing wrong?

I only want to allow DNS and web traffic, the assignment requires me to allow access to a website but nothing else, no ping etc.
I created the ACL above thinking that that would allow just the traffic I need to allow and deny anything else, but like I say I am unable to get the web page up from the browser of the host.
I can get the site using "permit ip any 172.40.56.254" but that also allows ping replies which I need to deny

The error says ICMP - ICMP is used by ping (echo and echo reply packets).
Your access-list entries don't allow icmp ( a protocol type in itself) - only "domain" and "www" (udp/53 and tcp/80).
