Need a Classic-compatible printer. . .

Hi everyone,
My Epson Stylus Photo 820 is making alarming grinding sounds when I try to print, and no black ink appears to be flowing into its innards. I'm thinking it's time for a new printer--are any of today's printers automatically compatible with Classic? If not, can any of today's printers be made to be compatible with Classic, and if so, how?
Thanks,

    Hi,

  • Can I print to an OS-Classic compatible printer using Tiger?

My husband works in an office that recently brought in a Sharp DM-4551 copier/printer. He takes our Powerbook G4 running Tiger to work and so far hasn't been able to find a way to print. The only drivers we can find online are for Windows or OS Classic.
I did download the OS Classic driver, and even installed the OS Classic environment in hopes of then installing the driver. If I'm able to complete the installation, is it possible to then print from OS X applications? Or will it only be possible to print from OS Classic applications?
On a side note, I have been stalled in my installation of the OS Classic driver. The Classic environment seems to work just fine. The driver and all its documentation is in a folder on my desktop. When I open it and run the installer, a box pops up asking me to insert the installation disk. There is no disk, but all that would be on a disk is in that folder on my desktop. I can't figure out how to tell the installer to look at the desktop folder instead of looking for a disk. It won't continue the installation without insertion of a disk. I tried burning the install folder onto a CD and inserting the CD when the installer asked for a disk, but somehow it guessed that this was not the original installation disk, and wouldn't take it.
This is really obnoxious to not be able to print from Tiger to this Sharp DM-4551. Please, please please, is anyone who can help??! We would be so grateful to get this issue fixed!!

Okay so I downloaded Gimp Print (now called GutenPrint) and installed the latest version. I even found the Sharp DM-4551 in the list of printers when I went to set up the driver. The hangup is now in filling in the appropirate information. What I mean is that when I set up the printer driver using GutenPrint, I'm asked for protocol, IP address and Queue name. For protocol, I chose IP, as stated in the GutenPrint directions. The IP address I obtained from another user in the office who prints to the DM-4551 with her Dell with no problems. I'm stuck on Queue, though, and can't get any further without knowing what goes in that blank. I've tried leaving it blank, and entering "lp" as instructed in the GutenPrint documentation. When I try to print, it says it's connecting and then never can connect to the printer. It finally just times out. Where do I find what to enter for "queue"?

  • Need new ink jet printer for Mac G4 with classic

I've searching for a new color inkjet printer for my G4 with Classic and have found only 1 by Epson, the R800. However, I'm getting different answers from various techs. One said I just need to get a print server. A tech at Epson says it probably won't work for my classic mode if the OS 9 software is booted up with an OS 10 driver. I don't know the answer to this or exactly what it means!!! Most of my printing would be done with OS 9 software. I have been using an HP laser printer and an HP color inkjet on all 3 of my networked Macs with no problem. Can anyone tell me if the Epson R800 will work? Thanks, Ann C

I don't have it, but the specification page says
    +Windows 98SE/2000/Me/XP, Mac 8.6-9.2, OSX 10.1.3 or later+
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&in foType=Specs&oid=37472319&category=Products
Plus, there is a driver for Mac OS 9 available for download here
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid= 30501&prodoid=37472319&infoType=Downloads&platform=All
So I see no reason why it would not work.

  • New printer needed - which are compatible?

I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I have to replace my much loved Canon MP 470 printer. As they are no longer available, I would like to get something as close as possible. It needs to be compatible with my Mac, of course. My needs are simple. I don't need wireless. I need a multifunction but without fax. I do not do a lot of printing, seldom more than a few copies at a time. I need it to be a reasonable text and photo printer and a good scanner. Speed of printing is not important and cost of ink should be reasonable. I would like to be able to connect it directly to my computer and not via my modem. I would prefer to stay with Canon but am flexible. Is there such a computer? They all seem to be much more than I need. I am confused by different cables. Which kind do I need? All suggestion gratefully received. Thanks.

The latest version of the MP470 is the MP495. Not sure if you have this model in Canada so here is a link to its info from the Canon Australia web site.
    http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/For-You/Printers/PIXMA-InkJet-Printers/MP495
Looking at the specs this model does have built-in wireless. This would require you to have a wireless router (also known as an access point). You mention a modem so if this is actually a router rather than the good old fashioned dial-up modem then you could be able to connect this device to the modem without needing any cables.
But you do also mention they you don't want to use your modem and would be happy connecting the printer directly to your Mac via a USB cable. Therefore the MP280 is basically the same model as the MP495 but without wireless support.

  • Looking for a wireless A4, edge to edge mac compatible printer

Looking for a wireless A4, edge to edge mac compatible printer? can anyone reccomend something which really works well with Mac?
I would get an A3 but I am guessing that A4 edge to edge would be better?
I need edge to edge as I design A4 brochures and I need to make 100% size mock ups.
    thanks in advance

    Hello gumbsali,
Most or our current model printers are compatible with the Mac OS X Mountain Lion operating system; so we can provide you with the best recommendation, please reply with the following information:
      1.  Will you need to have faxing ability?
      2.  What is the largest size paper you will need to print?
      3.  Will you need the ability to scan 35 mm slides or film?
      4.  Will you need the ability to scan?
      5.  Is there a specific price range you are looking to stay within?
      6.  Will you need the option of using the printer wirelessly?
      7.  How many pages a month do you estimate you will be printing?
      8.  What is the heaviest weight (in lbs) of paper (or cardstock) that you plan on using in the printer?
      9.  Will you need the ability to have the printer interface with an iPad, iPhone or Android phone?
    10.  Will you need the ability to print photos and images directly from a memory card?

  • Why won't the header section of my Classic document print?

When I print a Classic document, printing begins at the bottom of the header section. The header section itself and any text therein is just ignored. (The header text is definitely within the page margins and the print margins, and the header dimension appears in the LaserWriter 8 Print dialogue box).
This is a great embarrasment if you are working with pre-printed stationery incorporating letterheads; to achieve the desired result you must add the header dimension to the letterhead dimension to find the insertion point setting for the first line of your document !!
Does anyone have a solution? The only clue that I can offer is that the printer is connected via a USB to parallel converter cable. (And there are no problems with OS X documents).

Hi, Roger. Every printer has a hardware-delimited maximum print area, and that area may in some cases be further restricted by the printer driver used. The position of that defined maximum-print-area rectangle on the page is also controlled by hardware or software or both. Any limitation that is imposed by your printer itself will, of course, not vary from OS X to OS 9 or Classic mode. But if your OS X driver and your OS 9 driver impose different print area restrictions, you'll see different results in Tiger and Classic. And if you're not using any OS 9 driver, as I suspect may be the case, then you may have to conclude that your old Classic apps (isn't WriteNow wonderful? I still use it too) just aren't as compatible as you might like with Classic printing in Tiger, or with your Gimp-Print driver, or with your parallel-to-USB adapter. There's an awful lot in the equation that was undreamed-of in 1994.
If there's no other driver option for you to try, then I strongly suggest buying a new, Mac-compatible printer to replace the old BJ-30, which was never meant to be used with a Mac in the first place.

  • "not compatible print cartridges" error Message

    Hello
my Hp Photosmart C4280, after a lot of good print with the same cartridge, suddenly now says that the print cartridges are not compatible: this is not true, because my hp black cartidge is an original HP 350XL (not recharged!)
    Anybody know What happens?
    Thanks

I am getting an error message that the almost-new print cartridge (refurbished, not HP) for my HP 5740 Deskjet is not a compatible print cartridge.  I need to know how to disable the message and allow printing with the perfectly good cartridge.  Help!!

  • OSX 10.4.11 Looking for a compatible printer

I'm trying to find a compatible printer to work with my Mac Mini OSX 10.4.11
    Regards
    AESD

    Thanks Carolyn,
I'm new to mac.  I just purchased a Macbook Pro and am switching from a windows desktop.  It's a big learning curve.  I have an Epson Workforce all in one printer and it is working fine with my new laptop.  It does have fax capability but I have no need for it.
However, I find that the ink is very expensive.
I am not a business, but I do quite a lot of printing, including photos.  I'm an artist.
I am wanting to replace my color laserjet multifunctional printer that I bought in 2007.  There are no driver updates for it, so I have to search for a new printer.
I think I will have to wait a while until a compatible laserjet comes on the market.  It seems I'm hitting my head against a brick wall!!!
Thanks again for trying to help.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

  • Need help to find printer setup utility

I recently bought my first Mac and have slowly been adding to it over the last couple of weeks. Today I added a new printer that I wish to connect wirelessly. The printer is a Brother MFC-3360. I installed the software that came with the printer and had the printer connected directly to the Mac Book. It printed just fine.
I then disconnected the USB cable and plugged it into the Extreme Base station. It failed to print. According to the Extreme manual, I need to open printer setup utility, located in the utilities folder in the applications folder. Then from there I need to add the printer.
The problem is, I have no printer setup utility. Is there another place where it might be located?
Any other ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Found problem. Went to Sys prefs -> Printers and Fax -> removed my printer and re-installed. Works like a charm.

  • Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.

Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.
I'm NOT in any way a Terminal Services expert and I need help trying to get an application program working in a multi-user environment.
The issue is that the printer changes for every user that is logged in. The application needs to print NOT to the default printer, but to a "special" printer which is selected in the application... let's call it a label printer to simplify the explanation.
You have your default regular printer, easy for the application to find that one, and then you have a special printer that labels get printed onto. The application needs to know what printer is the label printer. So we allow the user to select that in the
application and the selection is stored in a config file in
    C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
I don't have access to the application so I can't change how this works.
In the "regular" world, selecting the label printer driver to use should be per machine, NOT per user. When a new user logs into a machine, the physical printer doesn't go "poof" and a new printer suddenly appear. Same printer for all
    users.
Yet in terminal services, the physical machine is "merged" with the virtual machine on the server. And there can be many users logged in at the same time. So each users real machine (and real printer) is injected into the "fake" terminal
services machine. The name of the printers is made unique for each user. So the printers DO go "poof" and change names depending on the user logged into terminal services.
So user "A" logs in and sets up the application to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" (or whatever the name of the printer happens to be), that setting is stored in the ProgramData subfolder, and all is well. Later, user "B" logs
in, and when they print, the application tries to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" which doesn't exist for user B or is only accessible by user A. If user B re-configures, that breaks it for user A.
SOLUTION 1: The way that /should/ work (in my mind) is that you define one "generic" printer in Terminal Services... call it "Virtual Label printer" and when the user wants to print to it, the print job gets re-directed back to whatever
physical printer is actually connected to their local workstation. There is a map of virtual printer to actual printer depending on the current user. The application is told once to print to "Virtual Label Printer" for all users.
SOLUTION 2: Or... there should be some way to make the ProgramData sub folders separate per user. E.g. when user "A" tries to access:
    C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
    they actually get
    C:\UserData\UserA\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
    and user "B" gets
    C:\UserData\UserB\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
So the question I have is: Does either of those solutions exist hidden somewhere in the setup of terminal server? Or is there another way around this issue that I don't know?

I don't really have a "for sure" answer to this, but because people here can't seem to deal with a question that hasn't been answered I'll provide the best answer I did receive from ServerFault.com user Nathan:
I can feel your pain with using old software on terminal servers ...the solution I've come up with definitely won't scale as it requires some manual configuration, but I've gotten this method to work with our label printers (which require to be
printed to an LPT port...yep, that old).
Share your USB-connected printers to the network on each machine. Then, have the user log in on aunique session for each of them
(a TS account cannot be shared among computers for this to work) and install a network printer pointing to the USB one they shared. Try to use a DNS name to account for possible DHCP movements.
After, it should work. Each user can do this since display names can be identical as long as the ports are different (which they are).
This was clarified by the following series of comments:
I think you are on to something here, and I originally advised the admin to do this. The problem he ran into is that it setup the printer names in the TS as "printer on usersworkstation"
and he could not rename it except to change the "printer" to whatever. E.g. the "on userworkstation" remained. I believe there is another way of installing the printer which avoids this, but I can't find it. Ages ago, one used to do NET
USE LPT2 \\computer\printer password /USER:domain\user /PERSISTENT:YES and then tell the driver to print to LPT2 –  James

@JamesNewton That's actually the exact method we used. The way around the "network printer" part is to install it as local printer and map it to a TCP/IP port that way. –  Nathan

You mean in the case where the printers are TCP/IP connected and not local USB / LPT to the users workstation? That makes sense. Wonder if this will work for USB connected printers... –  James

@JamesNewton You'd share the local printer on the client's PC then on the server connect via TCP/IP to it. You'd need static addresses or use DNS names if DHCP, though. –  Nathan

Ah. Yes. I see. Looks like the LPT thing should work even with a USB connected printer:superuser.com/questions/182655/… –  James

  • Ipod classic compatible with Vista Home Premium 64 bit

    Hi,
Is the Ipod Classic compatible with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit?
I found out the hard way that the Itouch is not!
    Greetings,
    Miguel

If I could I would answer your question.
But I do not know how I did that.
Itunes has been working since day 1 on my 64 bit machine, only problem is that it takes half a minute to copy album cover art to song in itunes, the computer is hanging for 15 seconds before the album cover art is copied.
I just took the Ipod out of the box and connected it to the computer and it worked fine.
Only problem that I had yesterday is that when I'm intergrating album cover art my hard disk is doing strange things.
Just yesterday, my RAID 1 was corrupted by Itunes, first hard disk 1 was failing and an hour later hard disk 2 also crashed.
Was able to reconnect them into RAID 1, luckilly.
