  • A good book on Unix (from a DBA perspective) is needed

    Hi everyone,
I am familiar with several Unix OS on a user level. However, when dealing with Oracle issues I often find that they are interrelated with OS issues. Can anyone recommend a good book on fundamentals of Unix (or more specifically, Solaris) system administration with some coverage of performance troubleshooting?
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,

I recommend that you stay away from any books by Mr. Burleson. Two ways to handle that - stay away, or understand and confirm. A good book will declare the s/w version for any assertion and will provide supporting tests for each assertion. Rampart books do have a fair bit of useful information. I've just learned to test every statement before relying on it, unless I know the actual author personally. And that should be true for any author - Tom Kyte and Jonathan Lewis encourage verifying nearly everything, in part because even simple environment changes can impact the result.
I find there are no real solid books on the topic - I've been putzing with one for a few years now, but OCD keeps geting in the ... Oh look, a rabbit ...
The closest right now seem to be the combination of

  • Need good book for ...

I'm looking for a good book that talks about the structure of a database at the filesystem level. Information about which files are used to do what. Many beginner books I see try to explain databases from the inside while many advanced books are over my head technically based on my current knowledge of databases. I'm not trying to build/design one, just manipulate, backup, maintain one that's already there.

This "books" are good and free http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • Suggestion for good book/reference of flex and blazeDS

hi...been developing the client side with flex for some time and now getting into server side and found some stuff from adobe and other short articles about blaze and servers but really looking for a good book/reference...thought i'd buy a book called enterprise flex with blazeds by brian someone....worst IT book i've ever read...any ideas would be great

    Update:
Ok...I finally figured out that by replacing the tokens in the services-config.xml file with the physical address of the server everything works.
Anyway...this means the application needs to be compiled everytime it is moved to a new server or even a different folder on the same server for that matter. Is there any way to pass the {server.name}, {server.port} and {context.root} tokens to the application at runtime for messaging?
    Thanks,

  • Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript for flash?

Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript
    for flash?
    Intermediate level
I have been using flash for about 2 years more as a hobby
than anything else, some websites etc but now I realise I am going
to need to learn more actionscripting to do what I want, I have
come to terms with the simple stuff like goto – basic
variables – load mov – enough to programme up website
    navigation.
I ideally want to learn more about the dynamic side of flash,
mostly for designing user interfaces and websites etc
I’m after a book that doesn’t get too heavy too
fast yet I’m a little past the more basic functions
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

  • Suggest a good book for learning?

    Hey, all.
Trying to get into the automating/scripting thing as I've started a new job that has to do a lot of versions of similar animations/illustrations. I'm no programmer, but have had some success with simple AppleScripts in Illustrator and Photoshop, but After Effects doesn't like to play nice with AS. So I figure I may as well focus my efforts on ExtendScript/JavaScript to work with all the apps, be cross-platform, plus help with my limited Expressions knowledge.
So can anyone suggest some good books for learning the JavaScript language? I've done online tutorials, which have helped a little, but just a big ol' consolidated JavaScript book, teaching the structure and syntax from the beginning (again, not a programmer by trade) would be best for me. Thing is, 95% of the books I've looked at are focused on web design, which I'm not that interested in. I'll use one if the core JavaScript teachings are well-presented and I can just ignore the web stuff; just don't want to buy a book that I'm only going to read half of and not learn everything I need to.
All suggestions welcome, and thanks in advance.

Look up "eloquent javascript" online for a pdf.

  • Regarding Good book for Oracle Service Bus 11g

    Hi All,
What is the good book for Oracle Service Bus 11g in the below list(or You can also specify any book other than from below list)?
1)Oracle Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook
2)Oracle Service bus in 21 days
3)The definitive guide to SOA:Oracle Service Bus,Second edition (or)first edition?
Can yOu help me out which is the good book for OSB?

    Hi Deilby,
    Thank You for your reply.
According to my understanding(I don't know whether it is correct or not),If you want to have full-fledged OSB development,we need to have eclipse.
If you just need to have routing and transformation along with SOA suite development,We can use OSB console .
Can You also look into this below SOA forums thread with SOA-OSB questions? If I have 'Oracle
Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook' , Can I answer all those questions?
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2559964?tstart=0
My intention is clear,I want to have full-fledged OSB development information(important components) and that leads to have good exposure to face questions.
Can You help me out to clarify my understanding and recommend the book according to that?
Note: I already worked on SOA Suite.I worked on OSB console. I think whatever we can  do with OSB eclipse development the samething we can do with OSB console along with SOA suite.
    Can You clarify on this?

  • Good book for Building a Driver?

I'm looking for a book that focuses on JDBC from the point of view that will help with building a driver. How about JDBC API Tutorial and Reference, Third Edition? I would just like one that explains the API in a manner that will help understand how to implement the many methods which need to be subclassed for a Connection, Statement, and ResultSet.
Any ideas on any good books?

I have vague recollections that one of the mainstream Java book series had a title on JDBC a few years ago that sold itself as being for driver writers rather than users.
Presumably it was from either O'Reilly, or the Sun Java series from Addison Wesley, but I 've been wracking my brains but can't remember the title. Unfortunately I didn't buy it whichever it was.
Any idea what I'm talking about? Did it exist, and if so, did it not live up to its backjacket claims? It would have been JDBC 1.0 oriented if it did exist, but if it's still available (even if not in print) it might make a good starting point.
Hopefully I'm not talking complete rubbish here...
    Dave.
