Need a GOOD desktop replacement app

I've been looking around a lot online looking for an app to replace my desktop background with a screensaver. I've found a few solutions, none of which work well. What i want is to have "arabesque" as my desktop background. Ive looked at "magicdesktopSwitch"
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/icons_screensavers/magicdesktopswitch.html
which has been the closet to what i want, but i cant seem to get it to start on startup. Does anyone know of any other way that this is possible? Thanks.

Ya, i sent him an email. Do you think there's anyway to get this to start automatically??? Thats about all its missing. I asked him the same thing, he just hasn't responded yet.

  • Need a good word processing app

Does anyone know of a good reasonably priced app that I can use to write documents such as is done in Word on the Mac. It would also be nice if it had a spreadsheet program to go along with it. However, I would like to save this on the home screen, if possible. I have Pages, but this will not save on the home screen.

You can send Pages and other iWork documents to DropBox with the WebDav function (sharing via a server) and the sharing options of Pages, Word or PDF are available to you. The good news is this is easily done via a service called DrobDAV. The bad news is there's a fee, but there's a free trial and an educational discount.
This article at Tech Inch explains it. If you rely on DropBox, as I do, and use Pages, etc on your computer, it's really great. Generally, iPad apps that support WebDav can send the doc to DropBox with this add-on.

There's also a free DropDAV limited service, but files are limited in size 1MB.
And of course Pages, etc can share to iDisk, which is being replaced by iCloud.

  • We need a good battery monitoring app

We really need an app that monitors battery usage and breaks the usage down by each individual item--cpu, screen, each app, etc.
It's a real pain to figure out what newly installed app may be causing excessive battery drain when you have many apps installed and there is no app that can tell use this information and from what I understand the developers aren't able to find a way to implement it either, thus the issue resides with webOS.
This is a major necessity in my opinion especially because webOS is designed for heavy multitasking.

  • I need a good DVD creator app for Mac

I have been researching DVD creator apps in the App Store and I am really not finding anything good. A large majority (80%+) have poor reviews and the others either have no reviews or the positive reviews are very suspect like the creators friends and family wrote them. I mostly need this as I work on iMovie projects and would like to share them with people who don't do You Tube or prefer to watch movies/video on their DVD player. I guess I missed out when Apple offered iDVD as standard software. If I see a trend of replies mentioning the same app I will check it out. I don't mind paying for it, I just want it to work.

I've requested this post be relocated to an appropriate Mac forum, rather than the iPhone Accessories forum.

  • I just need a good and simple app to organize my contacts. Any tips?

The application needs to allow me to create groups with the iphone itself and also send text messages and emails to those groups i create. Thank you.

After trying the app tacts (ugly dark visual and wouldn't let me create more than one group of contacts) and easy groups (has bugs in it), i finally downloaded
    GROUPS (Qbix inc.)
It's working fine so far and you can remove the ads by telling your friends about the app. Enjoyed that also.

  • Need a good Desktop HD for Time Machine

I'm in search of a good Hard Disk for my iMac that will be used solely with Time Machine. I recently purchased (and returned) a LaCie P'9321 due to it incompatibility with a Mac. So I'm looking for a HD that will give me no problems and is in the range of $150. Thank you.

There are many good ones, though of course none can be guaranteed to never have a problem. I've been quite happy with the units from OWC. I have several of the Mercury Elite Pro and have never had any problems.

  • Macbook Pro 17" i7 as a desktop replacement?

    Two questions, please:
1 - I am thinking of buying the newest Macbook Pro 17" i7 as a replacement of one of my Windows desktops. I would use it 8-12 hours a day, 360 days a year hooked to an external monitor and, most of the time, using several Windows applications (no graphic software) under Parallels. I want a notebook in order to be able to readily grab it and take it with me in case of emergency (I am living in Japan). I also need the 17" screen because of its resolution. Is using this type of Macbook as a desktop replacement a good, if not viable idea? Or it can't stand many hours of work almost continuously while using Parallels? I am mainly worried about the heat and hardware wearing. My iMac heats up quite a bit when working with Windows under Parallels, therefore I suppose that a notebook would have more cooling problems.
2 - I've read that the new Macbook Pro 17" battery is not removable by the user. Since I would use it 95% of the time in my office out of the AC adaptor, I would have preferred to be able to remove the battery completely: can the Macbook Pro 17" stand many hours of work only with its AC adaptor? Somewhere I've also read that the provided adaptor is not powerful enough to power the hardware completely from the AC power line, so it would also have to use the internal battery power. Is this true? And when Parallels is used the battery power is almost halved or even worse.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

The 17" MPB is a excellent machine, it's like a powerful desktop, but portable.
The anti-glare high res is most excellent and clearly awesome, I simply am in amazement each time I swtich to it from my older MBP 3,1.

The iMac's are hot and I don't like them for the fact that one can't remove the hard drive and they have glossy only display options making them unsuitable unless your living in dark hole.
Your sure placing a lot of stress on a laptop, basically making it a desktop with monitor and then your going to want a keyboard and mouse too..
The 17" most certainly can handle vm software with ease, I can even run a lightweight 3D game Cube 2 in Windows 64 bit in a vm and get over 45 fps. On a external monitor is another matter of course, output video isn't always as powerful as internal.
Of course you would have to purchase another Windows license, if you try to use the one from the iMac it will quit unless you go through all their hopps to transfer it.
I also need the 17" screen because of its resolution.
Just be warned the high res requires a bit more squinting, it's about 15% smaller UI with no scale option, but the quality is fantastic.

The battery can be removed, but doing so is a chore and will void the warranty/AppleCare.
There is no need to remove it and likely will not work without it, as there is even firmware for the battery now and that won't report to the OS and issues will likely develop.
The power adapter is certainly powerful enough to run the computer, it's that charging the battery won't go as fast while the computer is in use. I've not had a problem with it as 95% of the time it's hooked up to the power anyway.
Vm software is always going to take a lot of battery because your running two operating systems at once.
You just have to replace the battery before your 3 year AppleCare warranty has expired.
The MacBook Pro 2.2 15" and 17" are really portable desktop machines, needing power nearly all the time and used off power only occassionally between points.
If your on battery most of the time, then you should be looking at something like a iPad.

  • Is there a good website creation app on the iPad, or should I save up and get a MacBook to use RapidWeaver/iWeb?

Is there a good website creation app on the iPad, or should I save up and get a MacBook to use RapidWeaver/iWeb?

Wasn't being condescending, this is a new thead that continues one he already started asking if he could get iWeb on the iPad. Two people explained to him that iWeb was being discontinued (along with MobileMe) and suggested Rapidweaver and two other apps as replacements. It was also explained to him that there were no web creation apps on the iPad because you need to run a local web server, such as Apache, on your computer in order to use them. This is why they work on the Mac because it does have such a server. The iPad does not have one and cannot run one. And I suggested using HTML code if he wanted to develop on his iPad.
You were aware that is how web creation software works?

  • Looking for a good method or APP to have client sign a form in a text box

I am looking for a good method or App to take an existing form/Document and have a client sign, date etc.  I will want to create the text boxes in a stationary location.  Possibly to also take a picture to add to form.
Has anyone used any apps to accomplish this?
    Apps I have tried.
    Signnow
    Sign PDF
    Sign Easy
Sign Easy is about the best except the signatures (text boxes, dates, etc) are free floating and confuse people where to add them on form each time.  Clients have no clue how to use it.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  I may be over complicating this also, as there could just be a PDF app that I utilize.
    Thanks,

Thanks, the problem is I'm getting spam (spoofing) that is from me saying it was sent from my iPhone with my iPhone signature.  Ive reset my password on my mail, but that's pretty sketchy either way.  And it's being sent to my contacts as well.  Trying to eliminate all the possibilities and this is my first iPhone so I'm still a noob.
Sadly, spoofing doesn't really require much hacking, All a spammer would need to use your email address for spoofing would be your email address. If it's also being sent to your contacts, your email account may well have been hacked. But that would have happened on the server level. Your phone wouldn't have been involved. Unfortunately, once the miscreants have your contact list, changing your password will not get that back. Changing the  password to something strong may help prevent future misuse.
    Best of luck.

  • I am looking for a good Call Blocking App for my iPhone 5...any suggestions??

I am in need of a good call blocking app for iPhone....please any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

As Randy Landry1 says, Google for "silent ringtone", download and install on you iPhone as a ringtone.
Now create a contact for the offending phone number. Assign the contact to the silent ringtone and set no vibrate.
When that number calls it will not ring, nor vibrate. It will light up the screen, but if you do not see that, it will not bother you. They could leave voice mail, but that is easily deleted.
And if it is a situation where the are violating the do not call list, you can use the missed call log to report the number to the FTC.
Also, if the calls are abusive or threading, and the leave a voice mail, you something to show the police.
