Need a Mac web editor

I have been using Claris Home Page for ages. Its fast, easy to use, powerful, reliable, and unfortunately DATED with no updates. Since my website is a information site I can get away with using this client for basic editing, and Word 2004 as my composer. However there are times when I wish I had the best of both worlds and a more modern editor, as Home Page (although very reliable) has a number of limitations, as the web has changed a bit since 1997.
I have tried many free/shareware Mac clients and none have been ideal. Some even have far fewer features than Home Page. What I need is the following. Remember that I am looking for a CLIENT and not a web based editing solution.
1. Powerful-- Home Page has a nice toolbar and loads of features, including a built in FTP client. How many clients these days offer that? With Home Page I just edit a file, and click on a icon to upload the file, that's it! As I am running Home Page in Classic under Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.11, this still works.
2. Easy to Use-- Forget BBEDIT. I am not a HTML programmer or a programmer by any means. Front Page 3.x for Windows seemed nice, but it only works for Windows, and my Mac is PPC based so I cant boot into Windows.
3. Backward Compatible--iWeb seemed to fit the bill and I gave it a trial run. Unfortunately the version that I tried (about a year ago) was unable to edit or open my Home Page 3.x files, and so I could not use iWeb.
4. Reliable-- I do not want a client that crashes. Home Page almolst never crashes and is very fast and reliable.
5. Cheap--Home Page cost under $100 in its day, and that is about how much I am looking to spend.
These are the basics. Please when you recommend a client, please dont forget to read what I am looking for, before you make a recommendation. Thanks..

iweb can only edit it's own files...if you publish them to a folder that is it...those files can't be reimported into iweb..so the same would be said of any file that made with any kind of editor can't be imported into iweb. it is a handy little program though, you may want to take a look at it again.
I came over to a Mac from Windows in March of this year. I was using a web editing program (WYSIWYG) which I loved....I know a little bit of the html but am not proficient with it and the program did what I wanted it to do. I was comfortable with it...
Anyhow, coming over to the Mac, I haven't been able to find anything similar to it...tried Freeway, Sandvox, Raphidweaver, etc. I don't want an editor (like BBedit) as I honestly like to SEE what I making...I can't visualize code. The only thing that I found that was close to it, is Kompozer. It is a free program. They just updated it and it seems to work much better. You may want to take a look at it and see it that would work for you.
I never used Claris Homepage so I honestly don't know what that one is like.
I think you will never really find the idea program and may have to adjust your expectations.

What you are asking to do should be ok for MYSQL...doesn't sound too intense
Apple uses WebObjects for their online store and a few other interactive services...apple still uses a lot of plain HTML which seems to do exactly what they need for product info
You sound (and this could be misinterpreted) like you are more design focused than program focused by the nature of your question. I would recommend looking into some open source webapps that work with MYSQL. you can then make custom themes and change the look of the app while keeping a known stable backend..
i guess, the thing you have to ask yourself is how many people you need to serve from the database at the same time. and as always, make sure your server has lots of ram if you are going to be serving a lot of users on a heavy database focused site
    hope that kinda helped

  • A workaround for Aperture users to use .Mac Web Gallery

As a user who recently switched to Aperture - I was hugely disappointed seeing some amazing new photo-related features in iLife '08 not available for Aperture users. Let alone the cash for purchasing software suites, I can't convince myself switching back to iPhoto for a single feature. So I googled and searched around...
Some pre-requisite for the workaround: You must have iLife '08, Aperture and .Mac installed.
    _*Solution 1*_
Create an album in Aperture that contains the images you want to upload to your .Mac Web Gallery. In iPhoto '08, create an empty library, then File > Show Aperture Library, choose the album and import images from there.
The downside of this is the images are your Versions in preview quality.
    _*Solution 2*_
Export Versions from Aperture and import the images to iPhoto and perform the upload.
    _*Solution 3*_
For users building websites in iWeb, I have seen threads that one could use the media browser in iLife suite to perform similar result but it also limits to the preview quality of Aperture.
I would have to say even the workaround is hugely disappointed but I can't see any other solutions at the moment. I couldn't recall my last ocassion on having such disappointment for Apple's software development.

Apple really needs to rev. Aperture so it sends photos directly to the new .Mac Web Galleries.
    Everyone needs to go here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
And voice there opinion there to get this added to Aperture.

  • IWeb is not working for sending podcasts to iTunes, so I need a new web building tool. What is the closest thing to iWeb that I can use, which also supports podcasts?

iWeb is not working for sending podcasts to iTunes, so I need a new web building tool. What is the closest thing to iWeb that I can use, which also supports podcasts?

There's no reason you can't go on using iWeb for this - with iWeb '08 you have to publish to a local folder (i.e. on your Mac) and then upload the contents of the folder (not the folder itself) to your hosting service: and you have to make sure you enter the new URL in the Publish information or the feed won't work properly; this done, an iWeb podcast should work fine.
Of course there is still the problem that iWeb is not supported and sooner or later a system upgrade may break it. You could look at RapidWeaver: you can make podcasts with that, though the last time I looked into that - which was admittedly some time back - I didn't feel it was ideal for this. There are lots of other podcast creation programs or services around. WordPress is OK but it may be a bit of a steep learning curve: Libsyn is an online service that seems to work reliably. Blogger writes messy feeds but does usually work. Podcast Maker used to work well - I used it myself a few years back - but it rather looks as if it's gone moribund and it may not be reliable with Lion/Mountain Lion, so you would want to check into that.

  • In need of a DBF editor

I need a simple DBF editor where i can copy and edit data and save to the original DBF format.
It would be great if I can work on and take advantage of some of the tools in Excel (autofill, add, subtract, etc) and then copy and paste the data into the DBF editor and save to DBF format.
I do not understand why something like this is so hard to find. And the software I have found is horrible and is very limited.
I already bought a $2 app from the app store but that thing stunk.
    Any ideas?

You need to tell us what app is saving and using the .dbf files - is it dBase -- or Access?
In theory, Excel can import .dbf files. Have you gotten that far?
One alternative is to get Open Office for Mac (it's free). It can open and save in .dbf and Excel formats.

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • How to get .mac web gallery albums on iphone?

hi just wondered if and how to view web gallery albums on an iphone without using safari to log into.mac. thought there may be a way of an automatic sync between the iphone and .mac web gallery?
i know you can send photos to the web gallery but dont know how to do it the other way around if that makes any sense?
    thanks rob

    One thing to check out.
If the person who created the .mac web gallery allowed for downloads, then you could download the photos to iphoto then sync to the iphone.
Otherwise you would need to open the .mac gallery in safari.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot delete .mac web gallery albums

Strange thing has recently happened to me. I deleted two albums both from the album pane and under the web gallery pane in Iphoto but the albums have not been deleted from my .mac web gallery. Is there any way to sync iphoto and the web gallery so that the albums are deleted? In the past this has always happened automatically for me.

Mount your iDisk, go to the Web/Sites folder and delete the contents of the _gallery folder. That should do it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Opening Safari for Mac Web Archives in Safari for Windows???

I need to open Safari for Mac Web Archives (saved html web pages on a Mac) on my Windows PC at work. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this? The original Web Pages are no longer available and the data in the Archives is the only set left.
I've tried opening the files with Safari for Windows but that doesn't work. I've also tried renaming the web archives from file.webarchive to file.html and that doesn't work either.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions for accomplishing this task??? Thanks in advance for your help!
    YV

If you can move your archives to a Mac I think you can convert them to folders with Webarchive Folderizer and then move back to your pc:

  • .Mac web galleries with Aperture

    Hi all,
I use Aperture for all of my photography needs however, I'd really like to be able to use the .Mac web gallery feature of iPhoto '08. I haven't bought iLife '08 yet because I'd like to know how this would work...
Can anyone give me an insight into how using your Aperture library in iPhoto works? Does your Aperture library automatically appear in iPhoto? Would I have to export my photos from Aperture and then import into iPhoto (therefore having a duplicate)?
    Thanks for any help
    -Sam

    Sam
Just tried an experiment with importing dragging a couple of pics across.
If you use iPhoto in the default setting, (Copy Pics to the iPhoto Library on Import) then yes, the Previews are copied over.
However, if you disable this in the Preferences (->Advanced) the Preview is not copied over, but referenced instead, and a Right-Click -> Show File produces a Finder Window with the Preview Selected in the Aperture Library.

  • Graphic Designer here, need to convince my company i need a mac (not a pc) !

    Hey guys,
I'm looking for the ultimate guru's for a Mac vs. PC debate in a corporate office/firm setting. Basically, trying to convince CEO and IT why I need a mac. I'm a graphic designer for a land development firm. Work close with Landscape Architects and Civil Engineers.
I'll take concept sketches and/or AutoCAD files (that are converted for me) and pretty them up in photoshop or illustrator, do planned development books in InDesign. Web services are offered, but it's not the primary vs. print.
I'm currently working on a Dual-Core Xeon Dell workstation windows XP. Years ago up until 04' I was all about PC, but now have been accustomed to my mac.
At home, I've got a Dual Dual-Core Xeon 2.66 that I love dearly, multitasks very well.
I need to write up a report how this will communicate how I do my job better if i had a mac in the workplace instead of PC. I know that's a far-fetched statement, but trying to sell them on having me use a mac for my services while the entire office can cope with their PC network. I would appreciate any elaborate feedback and insight.

  • Switching web editors

I've read before that one can't import a muse created website into another web editor, but I thought it was possible to import websites into other editors such as Dreamweaver? My concern is that in case Muse is discontinued or I wish to use a different editor those websites I've created in Muse will basically have to be remade all over to stay updated.
The whole subscription model is only exacerbating this situation since I could otherwise keep a bought version of the relevant editor on the computer to edit any old sites, but with Muse I have to rent everytime I would need to edit something created in Muse, even though I may not have any actual use for Muse any longer (if, say, I'm using Dreamweaver instead).
It seems very unfriendly to not only be locked to an editor for any site designed with that but also having to rent it only to make updates to those sites instead of being able to simply buy it and have an old version on the computer that would be plenty good for simple content additions.
So my question is whether I've misunderstood something or if there are plans to make it possible to import a Muse designed site into other editors like Dreamweaver.

but I thought it was possible to import websites into other editors such as Dreamweaver?
This depends ENTIRELY upon your skill set in Dreamweaver and deciphering code. There have been several very experienced web designers and coders who have explained to the lesser code knowledgeable here that the code Muse produces is VERY complex and heavy to go through. It's not coder/editor friendly ( loads of extra code to wade through ) and would take a lot of time and patience to go through it all and slim it down in a programme like Dreamweaver. Quite frankly, if you HAVE those type of skills, you most likely wouldn't be using Muse in the first place.
Muse is like a High-End Hobbiest ---> Pro-sumer product. Dreamweaver is meant and marketed for professionals in the web industry. Muse is designed to be easy and elegant to use for people with a low to mid level skill set, but to keep this possible, it's a bit of 'closed system' .
My concern is that in case Muse is discontinued or I wish to use a different editor those websites I've created in Muse will basically have to be remade all over to stay updated
Believe me, that Muse being discontinued is MY main concern as well. At this point, I have taken a bit of the plunge and 'gone for it' with a bit of trust and hoping for the best in regards to it's longivity. I do think that since iWeb was eliminated, that Muse has an excellent chance on the market with those who started using iWeb, got a bit confident and want to bring it up a notch. Or, they are professional desingers like myself who were trained in Dreamweaver, but usually do print design and lost their web-skills. So, I use Muse for my companies websites ( I am an In-House designer ) that are realatively easy sites focusing more on basic information and aesthetics then any interactivity or CMS systems. However, becuase they are not THAT complex, if I can to loose them and start all over again with another WYSIWYG editor, I could do so.
If you need more then what's Muse's 'golden cage' has to offer, it might better to take the step up to Dreamweaver and bypass this programme.
So my question is whether I've misunderstood something or if there are plans to make it possible to import a Muse designed site into other editors like Dreamweaver.
As far as has been made publically aware; no, there are no plans to make a Muse originated site easier to edit in Dreamweaver. Muse is a bit of a closed system and I believe it has been designed this wayintentionally too. To make things easy, it has limited functions, to which the Muse team have promised will be added to over time. However, it's been designed to be used as a closed system without too much in the way of 3rd party manipulation.. You design your sites in Muse, you edit them in Muse, it spits out some HTML and some CSS and you go from there. It's not meant to then go into another more complex editor like Dreamweaver. Remember, many of it's intended market wouldn't have an expensive piece of software like Dreamweaver in the first place.
So, bascially no, there is nothing STOPPING you from importing your Muse designed site into Dreamweaver, apart from your skill set and patience. However, if you do so - keep in mind that whatever you do change to the site in Dreamweaver is only good for that one upload only. You can not then take that Dreamweaver "edit" or manipulation of the site and get it BACK into Muse. It won't work. You would have to make those changes again everytime updated the site as you can't take exisiting sites/code/HTML/CSS and reinsert them into Muse.
The whole subscription model is only exacerbating this situation since I could otherwise keep a bought version of the relevant editor on the computer to edit any old sites,
And THAT is the crux of the problem / controversy with Muse. You are effectively ransomed unless something at Adobe changes.
