Need a Mail tutorial

I'm trying to transfer my several email accounts from Mail in OSX10.4.11 to Mail in OSX10.6.8. I've installed my entire OSX and all software in less time than I've spent trying to get my Mail accounts across.
I need a Mail tutorial. Not one that tells you how to use it, but one that explains what all the options do and how the various mailboxes operate. For instance, I've got three versions now of each account: one at the top under MAILBOXES, one in the middle under IMPORTED, and one at the bottom named with the name I assigned it. What a mess.
Any suggestions as to a detailed tutorial that explains all this stuff?

Thanks Kurt for all your suggestions. I've passed a couple of Helpful Answers your way.
Since your last response a few weeks ago I've played around with Mail some more, but it became too much of a mess. There appears to be no easy way to set up a POP account in Mail unless you happen to know all the appropriate server settings. Even when you change to POP, Mail keeps calling the account an IMAP account. After 2.5 GB of unnecessary uploads and downloads (Mail was trying to synchronise, or whatever you call it, and I didn't want it to), I gave Mail the boot.
Turns out there was a one-word solution to my problem: Thunderbird. I downloaded it, installed it, opened it, chose the POP option, entered user names and passwords for five accounts, and Thunderbird consulted its database and entered the appropriate settings. Then I imported all my emails from Mail, copied them to the appropriate folders, and that was it. Worked first time.
I don't like tossing Apple software, but for me, Mail was too difficult to set up.
To anyone else who reads this thread and has difficulty with Mail, my suggestion is: try Thunderbird.
CCCloner
Re why I don't use CCC. Well, actually I do, occasionally. But as incremental backup software, it is too slow for my liking – about 1/10 of the speed of SilverKeeper (SK). CCC is slow because it makes absolutely sure that files are identical, something I don't need; whereas SK simply checks modification dates and file size. It's worked for me for almost a decade, keeping track of >50,000 of my files (backed up to 4 hard drives), and I've never lost anything.
A few years ago I contacted Mike Bombich, the author of CCC, about the speed difference. He agreed that CCC would be significantly slower than SK for the reasons listed below. According to Mike, SK uses method (b) whereas CCC uses Method (c), explaining why CCC is so much slower for my backups -- because 36,000 of my 58,000 files (that then existed) have "extended attributes" which were probably resource forks.
For the purpose of this conversation, though, the gist is that you have many files that have two data structures -- a data fork and a resource fork. Each of these data structures can change independently of each other. Resource forks, however, do not have modification dates -- the modification date of a file only refers to the data fork. As a result, backup utilities have a choice among three methods for determining whether to backup the resource fork as they scan your filesystem:
a) copy every resource fork, every time, just to be on the safe side
b) copy the resource fork of a file whenever the data fork of the file changes, or when the size of the resource fork has changed
c) compare a checksum of the resource fork on the source and target to determine if the resource fork has actually changed.
Aside from the above, the primary reason I don't clone is because an active OSX can be altered by opening it and using it, whereas a disk image of an OSX can't be changed. I prefer to make a disk image of my OSX partition, store it on my hard drives (the disk image gets backed up by SK, along with the rest of my data), and when I need to restore from it, I can be certain that the resulting OSX is pristine.
It's a bit like printing a book that was laid out in InDesign. You never send the "live" InDesign file to the printer (dangerous to do that) because the layout could change. You export to PDF from InDesign, then send the PDF to the printer. I treat OSX the same way: from a pristine OSX I "export" (clone) to a disk image, then "print" (restore) from that image.
Once again, thanks Kurt for all your help.

  • Do I need Mavericks Mail setup to send emails through website forms?

I'm not sure where to start but I believe I may have 2 separate questions.
I have a Mac Server ( Mavericks ) for my websites on a dedicated IP. I do not need the email as I have another email server on a second IP locally.
I want to be able to email form submissions from the the websites. I know how to write the form / script to make it work, but I'm unsure how or even if I need to set up the server a specific way to make this happen as this part is new for me.  Can someone point me in the right direction?
Secondly, I've also noticed in my mail logs that emails are sent out from [email protected] to random emails. I think what's happening is my wordpress client ( whom is using her yahoo address for posting notifications ) is actually receiving system emails for the posts and a copy of the post is also being sent out to the poster. It's all spam posts mind you. I turned off the notification setting in wordpress and I am still seeing emails coming through. I mention this as fixing question 1 may address this issue.
Sorry if this is confusing and thank you in advance.

You would not need a mail server on the same server as the website but likely you will need to have your website use your existing mail server. Ideally you would have your website and form use an existing mail server account on your mail server to send as so it can use an authenticated login to your mail server to do this, otherwise you will need to configure your mail server to allow your website to send using an unauthenticated connection. This later option makes it more likely for spammer to hijack this to send spam via your mail server.

  • Basic Mail Tutorial?

I'd like to set up a fairly basic mail server using OS X 10.4 Server on my LAN. I do not have a static IP, but am using dynamic DNS. The main issue I've run into so far is that none of the users I've created on the server appear to have mail accounts, even though they all have "Enabled" selected under the Mail tab of Workgroup Manager.
I'm also not sure of what the configuration should be for my situation-
    -dynamic WAN address
    -static, non-publically-routable LAN address
I have my router set to forward SMTP traffic on port 25 to my server, but I don't know if there are other settings I need to make in OS X Server itself.

the accounts are created when the user checks mail or mail is recvd for the account. it's normal not to see an account you've created until that occurs.
you are asking for a basic tutorial.... that's what the documentation should provide. post questions for anything that comes up.
Because you are on a dynamic IP, you are going to have some issues, particularly with black-lists. If you check the option in ServerAdmin>Mail>Settings to "Relay All Outgoing Mail Through Host" and enter your ISPs SMTP server, this should help outgoing mail to be delivered reliably. If your ISP requires SMTP-Authentication, a search on this board should reveal the answer.
For incoming mail. You have a changing IP address, so of course you need a DNS service which will update (I use zoneedit.com)...
To setup mail service is not trivial, you can tell by the number of posts to this message board. Start with the docs, you have to be committed enough to read them.
Please post any specific questions you have...

  • I hate iPhoto '11 when I need to mail pictures

I always need to send many photos to other people, with iPhoto 10, it is very easy and simple. I can see how many MBs would be before I send them, and I can choose the size of the photo. I love it. It is easy than in windows.
While in iPhoto '11, I can only send 10 pictures a time! why? this is not on iPad, My mac can handling this.
With iPhoto 10, I can edit the mail with pictures, with iPhoto 11 I can't do that. I can only edit the title and with “Insert your message here”, they even limit the characters! Oh! what are you doing?
Well, finally I have send the pictures. then I can see my client online and told me: "hey, I got your photos, with the 3rd and 4th picture............."
OK, let me check it out. but wait, where is the mail I sent just now? not in Mail Sent Box, not in iPhoto, I can't find it. it disappeared. I can't remember which picture is the "3rd and 4th", Should I ask my client to send the email back to me? what a joke!
So, what I am doing is: export the photos to a temp folder (original pictures are too big), copy to Mail, send, delete the temp folder. like what I did in windows.
Is there anyway I can get back to iPhoto '10?

If you don't like the new ways that iPhoto handles emailing then you can access the old way with a small change in how you work:
    1. Drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Mail icon in the Dock.
    or
    2. Use the Photo browser in Mail - or any Media browser in the entire OS
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can then resize the image in the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Finally, you can make a simple OS Service to to automate the procedure. For more on this have a read of this:

  • Feedback: search within attachments needed in mail

    Hello,
I really need to be able to search within attachments within mail.
Specifically I need to be able to search within attached PDF and Word documents, through my entire email store.
it is important that it searches within all emails, regardless of whether or not the attachment has been saved to disk. I am aware that attachments saved to disk are searched but this is no substitute at all for being able to search through my 30,000 or so emails. Also I need to see the results within the email program, not within Spotlight.
Searching within attachments seems such an obviously needed feature, its a puzzle as to why it is not there.
    Thanks
    Andrew

The puzzle for me is that in fact, in Leopard 10.5.2 and Mail 3.2, Mail.app sometimes searches into attachments, sometimes not.
More specifically: I produced a message with a Word attachment with a infrequent word in it. I sent it to various account I have in Mail, and then searched for the word. Some of the messages are found others not. I cannot find a pattern. Sucessive forwards of the same message to the same account produce disfferent results (some of the messages show up in search others not).
This seems to be message related: if a message shows it will always show, and vice-versa.

  • Need Help - Mail Application Folder Issues

I have 2 mail accounts. One is an exchange account, another is a standard hosted mail service with IMAP interface.
Both are setup as IMAP (Exchange option didn't show all folders, so I had to use IMAP for Exchange.)
The mail application just plain doesn't work for any folder management, on either account.
If I move messages, it's not moved on the server. If I send a message, it isn't stored in the Sent folders.
Most of the time, it doesn't put the mail anywhere. When I send mail messages, it creates a Sent items folder under the drafts folder.
The IMAP prefixes are correct, and I can see all folders. The Folder behaviors are set to the proper server side folders.
    I've restored, rebooted, etc.
    Any other suggestions?

There are no synchronize options on the PC mail apps, they are live clients. Outlook for work, OWA for my personal account.
This problem is happening with two accounts. One personal exchange, and one externally hosted (not exchange, actually webmail.us) for our company.
I am the Senior Software Architect/Engineer for the IT department and I have spoken with webmail.us as well as our infrastructure group and am very familiar with Exchange.
All issues and troubleshooting steps so far point to the need to troubleshoot the client application itself on the iPhone, especially since other IMAP clients have no issue using the exact same settings.
As a matter of fact, everything works 100% fine from the OSX mail client using IMAP for the exact same accounts with the exact same settings on my MacBook ultimate.
It makes a copy of a moved message in the proper folder, and leaves the original in the inbox. This is how the iPhone client should work, right?

  • Trading in old AT&T iPhone4: do I need to mail  the original headset, usb cable and wall charger?

I received Verizon's prepaid mail-back envelope, but it's so small that it looks like designed for the iPhone4 only, there is not much space to squeeze in the original, but old accessories. The FAQ section does not answer this question.

The phone itself is all that needs to be returned; the accessories (charger, cables, headset, etc) do not need to be returned.

  • Need hosted mail service for managing my 60 email accounts in one place.

I have 60 mail accounts in my email client on personal computer (such as [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc.). I can retrieve mails from this accounts and send mails using their own SMTPs.
Now I need do the same on server hosted email service. Is it possible with Microsoft Exchange 2013? Someone told me that this feature was removed in Microsoft Exchange 2013. Is it true?
Also, hosted Office365 Outlook and Microsoft’s Exchanged Hosted service such as “Microsoft Exchange Online“ can add only 5 mail accounts (see here, I mean this feature https://tinyurl.com/lcs9aqg ).
So, what to do? Is there any resolution?
Or should I search other mail server hosting than Microsoft Exchange? Which one?

    Hi Smart River,
Based on my knowledge, it is by design.
