Need a Modem for my G4

Hello,
I just received a used G4 Power Mac Audio Digital version by way that the headphones and mic ports are arrainged, which tells me which version. The telephone line jack cube was turned to its blank side, and I turned it around to connect a regular phone line. When after I installed the America On Line software, the software could not find a modem. I don't think there is one in the computer. So I need to get a modem for it. Any Ideas on this?
Thanks

Welcome To  Discussions Patrick!
I think that all four models of the Power Mac G4 DA, came with a standard 56k v.90 internal modem.
It just may be, that the Modem/Network settings for AOL Dial-Up, in System Preferences are incorrect.
The configuration works for me on my iMac G3. You may need to make some adjustments for your particular Mac and Modem models.
Read the entire document. Pay attention to *Notes.
And if you have any questions, please ask them before preceeding.
Delete only the files listed, no more.
Sign off and Quit the AOL application.
See *Note 1
Navigate to:
HD > USERS > YOUR HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES
If present, move to Trash:
com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)
com.apple.internetconnect.plist (a file)
com.apple.internetconfig.plist (a file)
HD > USERS > SHARED > AMERICA ONLINE
If present, move to Trash:
Access Numbers (a file)
Disconnect Log (a file)
Session Diagnostics (a file)
HD > USERS > SHARED > AMERICA ONLINE > DATA
Move to Trash:
Home (file w/Globe icon)
Don't empty the Trash just yet.
*Note 1Before you change the settings below, you might want to make notes, or take screen shots of your present configurations. Actually, this should be done before you trash or move any of the files I've listed above.
Then, open System Preferences > Network
In each of these panels, after you have made your selections or changes, be sure to click on the "Apply Now" button in the lower right corner, if it's available.
Location: Select "Automatic"
Show: Select "Internal Modem", or however you connect.
On the PPP screen, click "PPP Options". CHECK ONLY THESE options:
"Send PPP echo packets"
"Use TCP header compression"
Click OK
On the TCP/IP screen, Configure using IPv4: Select "Using PPP"
On the Modem screen, Select your modem from the list. I'm using an iMac (Summer 2001), and I have "Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)" selected. Select your modem.
Check "Enable error correction and compression in modem"
"Wait for dial tone before dialing"
"Dialing": Tone
"Sound": On
"Show modem status in menubar" (This isn't really necessary, but it's handy.)
Also select your Country.
Then, still in "Network" preferences,
Location: "Automatic"
Show: "Network Port Configurations"
Make sure "Internal Modem", or however you connect, is checked and at the top of the list.
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the screen.
Quit System Preferences.
Before you sign on, you will have to reset your "Access Numbers" & "Location".
Load the AOL application.
On the Sign-On screen, Click "Setup".
Next screen, select: "Create a Location with Setup Assistant.
Click OK.
Next screen, select: "Add numbers from the list of access phone numbers".
Click OK.
Enter your Area Code, and click Next.
Click on an appropriate number to highlight, and then click "Add".
On the next screen, do not select either of the two "Dial" options.
Click OK.
Add at least 2 numbers in the same manner, and then click "Done".
That will take you back to your Sign-On screen.
On the Sign-On screen, Click "Setup" again.
Select "Add or change a modem or other connection".
Click "Next".
Click "Yes", on the resulting screen.
You should then be able to Sign On to AOL.
If everything is hunky dory, you can empty the Trash.

  • Searching inside and for a modem For my G4

    Hello,
What I need to know in looking if my G4 Power Mac tower Digital Audio version, is the modem card installed flat horizontal or upright vertical in the standard slots on the main circuit board.
    I need a modem for my G4
I am also under the impression that I will need to upgrade my OS 10.4 to a higher version for a modem. Can I download this from the Mac sight using a DSL line?
My new hand me down G4 Power mac that I just received needs a modem. As one of our fellow Mac user described that the metal cube in the top right hand corner of the top back of my Mac G4 is a modem filter and not the modem. But has the standard telephone plug for a dial up modem. So far my AOL software detects no Modem as does the networking find feature on G4 computer itself

  • Modem for Time Capsule

Today I purchased a 1TB Time Capsule. I was ill informed that our previous router also had the modem built in to it. So we bought the time capsule and spent 3 hours trying to set it up only to figure out that we needed another modem for the time capsule to actually work. We have looked all over and the cheapest one i found is at least 75$. Does anyone know of any specific modems that work well with the time capsule yet not too pricey?

I use ATT, I actually don't know which kind of modem to look at, thats why i set up this thread, but i actually tried hooking up my time capsule to the previous 2WIRE seeing if the time capsule could just bypass the router and use the modem which it did. I am just looking for a modem thats not to expensive and will work good with the time capsule. Today i also tried configuring the time capsule to work with my older PC. So far, the only problem i have is when the PC tries to connect with the actual 1TB backup, i input the password, but it says to make sure netBIOS is enabled. Do you have any idea what that is?

  • I have a cable modem for my Time Capsule.  Do I need a separate cable modem for my airport express?

I have a cable modem for my Time Capsule.  Do I need a separate cable modem for my Airport Express?  (I'm using it to "extend" my network and also for Air Play.)

No, you connect to your Time Capsule wirelessly to "Extend" the network..

  • Macbook pro 15" got it for xmas, salesman said I did not need a modem!

Curently use an old Imac on system 9, using AOL and built in modem, nice salesman at applestore said no I did not need a modem, but now I'm completely lost! how do I get online, what is airport and do I have it? do I have bluetooth and if so why can some kind sole please help, I've had my old mac 10 years and it was never this hard, read the book cover to cover but no mention of getting online, please!

This is probably what you need, a "Apple USB Modem" (for connecting you MacbookPro to the internet using a dial-up service)
The new MacbookPro's do not have a internal modem.
    Airport is for wireless internet.
Bluetooth is for connecting to wireless divices like mobile phone's and PDA's
Your Macbook does have both Airport and Bluetooth.
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.

  • Just ordered new iMac do I still need a modem/router for Internet access

Just  converted to apple, ordered a new IMAC but little confused on Internet access.
does the extreme still need a modem/router,just a little confused after reading all the comments about poor connections etc.
Old windows soldier sorry if a little vague .

The AirPort Extreme is a router, but it is not a modem. You still need your existing cable or DSL modem. That device is usually supplied by your ISP and may or may not include the functions of a router.

  • Can I use a non-FiOS modem for secondary ethernet from FiOS coax

I intend to set up a home theater PC to connect to a TV located in a different room from the current FiOS modem/router (Actiontec MI424). I may use an HTPC 'extender' in the room with the TV, connected by HDMI.  However the Ceton Echo extender requires a direct ethernet connection, CAT5 I think.  What I'm considering in a few months, when my Verizon contract is up, is to drop all service except high speed internet from Verizon.  Then I could use the coax currently connected to the TV instead to connect to a modem or MoCA device which would output CAT5 ethernet to the HTPC extender.
I am not knowledgeable about ethernet and TV signals.  From what I can gather, a MoCA connection is preferable to a powerline network and maybe even better than running a long CAT5/CAT6 cable from room to room, which I don't want to do.  There is an Actiontec MoCA device available that claims to 'convert' from coax cable internet input to ethernet output.  Would this work to supply the Ceton extender using the FiOS coax that currently supplies TV signals to my Verizon set-top box?
Even more preferable to me, I currently have an unused Zoom cable modem/router that is Docsis 3.0 certified and which worked well for Charter internet supplied by coax.  It is less than 2 years old.  Could I simply use this Zoom modem with the second FiOS coax in the living room, instead of buying a new MoCA device?  That would mean I would be simultaneously using two coax-connected modems for ethernet: the Verizon-supplied Actiontec and my own Zoom modem/router.   If not, what is different about the MoCA device vs. what a cable modem does?
I think what I don't understand is whether there is a difference in the signal currently available from the coax supplying the TV: is it 'normal' cable TV/internet that the Zoom modem should be able to convert to ethernet, or not?  If this is possible, would I need to have Verizon do any configuring of it?  I did try to connect it myself and was unable to make an internet connection.  How do the providers control whether you receive through the coax ethernet-only or ethernet plus TV.  I get that the phone service is just a form of VOIP managed through the Verizon ONT in the basement.

MOCA frequencies are above those used for TV and can coexist on the same coax.  All you need at the TV is a 1x2 splitter rated 1Ghz or better.  One side goes to the TV.  The other wide goes to the MOCA adapter.

A cat5 connection is most preferable.  Second the MOCA.  Third is powerline networking.

There are a number of available MOCA adapters.
    What is a MOCA Bridge?

That Zoom cable modem won't work.  MOCA and DOCSIS are two completely different technologies.
BTW, the Actiontec is NOT considered a modem.

VZ can enable or disable any of three services provided by the ONT individually.

    Hiya,
I've had to re-install Windows XP on my laptop. I don't have the Toshiba drivers CD though.
So I came here to get the drivers but I've no idea which driver goes with which hardware in my Device Manager.
Here's what I need the drivers for under Device Manager...
    Ethernet Controller
    Mass Storage Controller
    Network Controller
    PCI Device
    PCI Device (again)
    SM Bus Controller
Can anyone advise which specific driver I need for each?
    Many thanks,

  • Can I use a Nokia N80 as a modem for my G4 PowerBook?

I need to buy a new mobile phone and thought that if I buy the Nokia N80 Internet Edition I can also use it as a modem for my PowerBook and connect using UMTS or EDGE. I already have a prepaid SIM card with TIM (Italian mobile service provider).
Has anyone successfully used the N80 with their G4 PowerBook?

  • USING BLACKBERRY 7290 AS MODEM FOR MACBOOK

I have been told this is possible. I have been on numerous boards with no help. I have been on PocketMac.com and downloaded the version to sync via usb. I need to find a way to use my 7290 as a modem for my Macbook. I have the new MacBook with Intel Core 2 duo and Mac OSX. Anyone out thereknow how this can be done? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A Blackberry 8703e is a Sprint device, so you'll have to resolve the issue with Sprint.
Sprint fields what they term the Sprint PCS Business Connection. You'll need that option if it is not already part of your subscription plan, and you'll need to tether a laptop through your Blackberry 8703e and your carrier via USB. Bluetooth connections via DUN are not supported. To enable a connection, Sprint states that you'll need the Sprint Connection Kit, which you find for several different operating systems—including Mac OS X—here:
    http://www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/support/downloads/index.jsp?internalId=downlo ads
Except that, I wasn't able to locate a package for your Blackberry when I looked there: only packages for Sprint's PC data cards seemed to be available. So, you must perform the recursive loop at this point, and contact Sprint.
I don't believe that anyone but Sprint will be able to resolve the issue for you. You certainly cannot do it without enabling the data option, which only they can activate.

Check your carrier's webpages for the Blackberry stuff. They should have links to specific software for various connections between Laptops, OS's, etc... I came across mine for AT&T today while poking around. You should have an account for your wireless account that you can check.

  • USB wireless Modems for MAC

    Hi Apple users,
Could an one tell me which USB wireless internet Modems support MAC OS X leopard 10.5.6 macbooks? Could you also tell me which one is the best and efficient USB modem for the MAC books? You help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Regards,
    Naresh

You'll need to clarify what you're looking for. Do you need an actual phone-line modem? There are boxes you can connect to wirelessly and then dial out, but they're not as popular as they used to be. Likewise, are you looking for a phone line modem for the MacBook? Apple has one they officially support -- I think it's actually made by US Robotics.
What do you mean by "efficient"? Lowest power consumption? Best speed? Least heat?
If you're looking for what the cable and DSL providers call a "modem", nobody can recommend one until they know what you plan to connect it to. Most of them are actually routers or bridges, and not real modems (modulator-demodulator).

I have an EA3500 Router. I have ADSL service into our office. What Cisco modem (or product) do you recommend that will present Broadband to the EA3500? I called Cisco and they said 'buy an X3000'. I don't see the point of buying another modem/router to feed the EA3500 Router! All I need to do is to present the EA3500 with 'Broadband'. Thanks....Peter.

Are you able to get internet connection service in your office without a modem? If not, then you need a modem first before you can use the router. The reason why they mentioned the X3000 because it is already a modem/router  (combo) and that it is designed to work for ADSL connection.
