Need a new external HD

just purchased a 17' MBpro for field work with FCP. i have an old maxtor one-touch 2 external HD, but want to upgrade. does anyone have any good suggestions for an external HD that i can use as my FCP scratch disk to free up space on my internal drive? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

If you end up goin with a Seagate or a LaCie Hard drive be sure you check out the recent discussions in this forum regarding "Zero Erasing" and "Formatting."
G Tech is currently backed up on arders for the 500 GB model of the G Drive Q Series... which features USB 2.0 port, both FW400 & FW800 ports as well as an eSata port...
I got a call from them two days ago (May 9th, 2007) and they said that it would be at least two weeks before they ship any of them out...

  • Do I need a new external HD to export the Color files?

I'm about to color correct the film I edited on FCP using Color. I'm a bit confused about a few issues. The first is that I shot my project using the HVX on P2 cards, then transfered it to my 500g glyph drive. The first question is, when you are done grading the film, does Color create completely new XML / Quicktime files, just like my original source material? Or does it just render the original media on my external hardrive using the color settings? If it DOES create new media, am I looking at a bunch of new quicktime files that will fill up my external hardrive? It's already pretty full. Do I have to invest in a second drive for the color corrected media?
I also read in the manual that you have to name the new color files the exact same names as your original Quicktime source files so FCP can reconnect the media to your sequence. Obviously I'm nervous about overwriting the original files on my drive, or confusing final cut pro. I know I could just save them in a different folder, but having two files named identical things on the same external drive seems dangerous and confusing. Do I need to daisy chain another drive just for the new color corrected media?
My final question is, does Color reduce the over all quality of your source media? I've heard that color correction in FCP actually reduces the quality just a bit because it uses a new codec on the render file or something, does COLOR bypass that? Are you getting a downgrade in quality from your source files?
I'm obviously a bit confused. Someone clue me in here.

Yeah, you are cornfused and quite honestly, you should really indulge in some training/teaching aides and practice before engaging in a project. But, that's up to you.
I hope you've read the release notes and for your first project, I'd advise following those notes to the letter.
Color will render new files and the size of those files is determined by the output codec that you set in your user preferences. If your current drive is almost full, you'll need to get another drive (by the way, rule of thumb for drive capacity is to leave 10% of drives capacity empty) and direct Color to render new files towards that volume.
YOU will not name the new Color media, it'll be done for you in the Render directory on the new volume provided that direct Color to put those files on your new volume. Color will not overwrite anything, I don't understand where you're getting that information.
Umm, where did you hear FCP reduces quality of color correction? When you render your Color timeline, you get a choice of output codecs, including the codec of the source material. I don't know where the idea of "downgrading" quality comes from.
Do yourself a favor and do some testing before you go any where near your finished "film." By the way, your HVX shoots video, not film.
    Good luck.

  • HT201250 Do you need to use a new external hard drive or an erased one to back up once you upgrade to OSX Lion?  My time capsule fails ever since I upgraded the new program to my old mac.

I have not been able to back up in Time capsule since I upgraded my mac to MAC OSX Lion 10.7.5.
Do I need a new external drive or an erased drive to get it to work with the lion software?

Either new or an erased drive is fine, as long as it is formated Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
By the way: I find that Carbon Copy Cloner is a much simpler and efficient "clone"(backup) solution, especially if you're using an external drive.

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • I need to copy audio files and projects from logic to an external hard as my MBPis nearly full and my external hard drive has packed up with all my files on it, any suggestions on how do I copy 200GB from my MBP to a new external HD

I Use logic and back my audio file and projects on an external HD ,this has now packed up . I have all the files in the MBP , but need to copy them to a new external HD, I have only 10GB left on my machine , how do I copy 200GB from my machine to a new External HD.
any helpful full advice would be appreciated.
    angus

Yes, just drag and drop them into the drive..
How long will it take? Hard to say without knowing the type and speed of the drives in question.. and even then it's hard to estimate... but does time really matter?
The fact you only have 10 Gigs left will/may slow the process down but it wont/shouldn't stop it...
If needed.. just drag and drop some of the files at a time.. not all of them.
Remember that copying files doesn't delete them from the original drive... You will still need to delete them yourself after they are copied over and empty the trash....
    However....
When you saved these projects in Logic (Pro X?) did you save them using the include audio files option?
If not, then when you move the audio files used in these projects... Logic will not know where they are to reload them........ and that will cause you issues.
    So.. if you didn't...
I would use this method instead...

  • I need to split my iPhoto.  I have a new external hard drive - can I just drag Photo events into the drive?

I need to move events from my iPhoto to a new external hard drive.  Can I just drag events into the hard drive?

    No.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • New External Drive .. NEED HELP PLZ

    Hi
i just plugin (usig USB) my new external hard drive ( 160 GB )
and i`m trying to copy some files to it
    and it shows this msg
" the item ... could not be moved because new volume cannot be modified "
so how can i make it ? and also it shows the new volume for read only .. how can i make it read and wirte ??
    thnx

Yes, I think so. You can create as many partitions as you like - if you look at that document, the second part shows how to partiton the drive into several partitions - just do it as shown but format one of them FAT32 or NTFS
    But....
I don't know if a PC can read a single Fat32 or NTFS partition from a drive partitioned using GUID. I think it would have to be Master Boot Record Scheme in which case, you would need Fat 32 all the way.
As you have to wipe the drive anyway, it won't hurt to try I suppose. In the worst case you can always reformat it back to OSX only or Fat 32 so that the PC and Mac can read it (NTFS if you only need the mac to be able to read it).
From a performance perspective I'd use two drives. To swap data between a pc and mac just network them rather than trying to make one drive do two jobs.
    I hope that helps,
    best of luck.

  • Do I need to buy a new external HDD for my Air?

I currently have a 2T External HDD that I have been using with my Windows computer. However, I am having problems using it with my MacBook Air - for example, I can't create new folders on the external HDD when using the Air. I read somewhere that "Mac OSX does not write to NTFS disks" (whatever that means) and that I'll need to "reformat the drive to either Fat32 or HFS" (again, I don't know what this means). I don't want to reformat the drive if that will cause me to lose the files that I already have on my external HDD. So, do I need to buy a new external HDD to use with my MacBook Air?

You CAN with the program PARAGON, however its a bit too much effort, .....external HD are cheap as dirt.
    A nice 2TB  2.5" external is $117
I read somewhere that "Mac OSX does not write to NTFS disks"
It CAN, but with another APP as mentioned PARAGON
You dont have to reformat anything,.....options are PARAGON, or another HD (the easy way).
You dont have to buy another HD, however having 2 archives of your vital data you dont dare lose is important.
best options for the price, and high quality HD:
Quality 1TB drives are $50 per TB on 3.5" or  $65 per TB on 2.5"

Most storage experts agree on the Hitachi 2.5"
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

I need to format a new external drive, then need to copy old external to new external

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the new drive. If the old external drive doesn't contain a bootable Mac OS X system or a Time Machine backup, you can just drag its contents to the new drive. If it does, use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

    Hi,
Sorry to say, but you'll need to buy an external microphone - there is no internal hardware for this.

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.
