Need a new firewire or USB for backup??

I just found out that my firewire cannot be partitioned to store bootable clones for both my new Intel MacBook and my old iMac Flat Panel. So I guess I will need to buy something new for my MacBook. Any suggestions on a good and cost effective purchase? I have been happy with my LaCie d2, but it is getting long in the tooth and there is probably a better alternative. TIA.
P.S. I am not a techie and will not consider building anything myself. I need out-of-the-box!
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9) iMac Flat Panel (10.3.9)

Funny you should mention firmware for LaCie. I have not had issues with my 120GB d2, though I use it only for clones, so it certainly has not had hard use. When I installed the recent firmware update I noticed that it seemed to apply itself to one partition, even though all volumes were mounted. I followed the instructions exactly, so hopefully I won't be having problems.
Also funny that you should post that particular link. I have been trying to search on these boards and OWC seems to be highly regarded. My MacBook doesn't have FW 800, but I was considering getting this model http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MAU8F7250G16/
so that I would have 800/400/USB choices. If my MacBook only has 160 GB hard drive, I am thinking that 250 GB should be okay. Hopefully their back-up software is not difficult for a very BASIC Mac user to learn. I have been using Retrospect but I understand that it is not Intel native yet?
Thanks for your input.

  • I have a new macBook Pro 15 and need to purchase best, easiest usb for backup - help please

I have a new MacBook Pro 15" and need to purchase the easiest, cost-effective USB for backup.  I have never done a backup and don't know what to buy.  Thanks much from an obvious novice.

Look at these two links to OWC products.  Note that one is for enclosures only so an appropriate HDD would have to be added.  This at least should give you an idea of what is available.

I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Can i use Iomega 1TB MiniMax Hard Drive FireWire 800/USB for ipad 2 to access videos without using mac or pc ?

can i use Iomega 1TB MiniMax Hard Drive FireWire 800/USB for ipad 2 to access videos without using mac or pc ?

No, you can't connect an external drive to the iPad - the iPad doesn't have a USB or firewire port and the camera connection kit only supports the transfer of photos and videos into the Photos app. There are some wifi-enabled drives that can be used to stream content to the iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite

  • Firewire or USB for Home Media Server

I have an iMac (2008) that I am going to use as an iTunes server for streaming to AppleTV. Since the iMac only has a 320GB drive, I am planning on buying a new external hard drive to which I will transfer all of my media, which I will always leave connected to the iMac (I will just point the iMac's library to the media on the drive).
My question is whether I should consider FireWire 800 or USB 2.0 as the external drive. I know most macs these days no longer come with FireWire, and in the case that I end up getting a new computer in the next year or two, I'd rather have a drive that utilizes USB 3.0 and have that faster option in the future.
That being said, if the stream quality to the AppleTV is going to be so poor that I hate it (using the USB 2.0), then I would consider a FireWire 800. Does anybody have any experience with this?
Also, it should be noted that all of my devices will be wired to the local home network (not wireless).
    Thanks for the advice.

Personally, I don't think it matters. FireWire 800 is capable of almost 800 Mb per second and while USB 2 is theoretically capable of 480 Mb per second it only has an effective throughput of 280 Mb per second. If you have other uses for this drive, the difference between FireWire and USB may well be worth considering, however if you are just going to use it for movies to play to your Mac/Apple TV, you should remember that these movies will need no more than 10 Mb per second in order to play without issue.

  • Thunderbolt Adapter and USB for Backups to Time Capsule?

    Hi,
Would there be any [speed] benefit in using the Thunderbolt port on my iMac (and MacBook Ar ) with the appropriate adapter to backup my devices to a Time Capsule, rather than just the network port, please?
I appreciate it would probably be better with my MBA over a wireless network, but the TB port doesn't seem to work :-(
    Thank you.

Besides additional monitors, ThunderBolt is also for having high speed access to data. In order to do that the storage can't be just plain disk drives. They are so slow that many other bus structures can be used for them. In order to get the full functionality of ThunderBolt you must use things such as RAID Arrays that are able to move data faster.
For backup there is no really little or no need for speed and in fact the expenses involved in the high speed access would just be wasted on backup. It is really working with the data what that expensive is worth while considering.

  • Need a new phone, not eligible for upgrade.

My phone is horribly cracked and now the calibration is off. I need a new phone until I am available for an upgrade. Is there any way of buying another 5 for the meantime without entering into a new 2 year contract? I just need one for a couple of months until I am eligible.

You could get an out of warranty replacement as your device is damaged. It will cost you money but not as much as a new phone.

  • New TB external drive for backup

I am changing my 500GB external drive to a 1TB External Drive. The Apple store explained how to move my files to the new drive using Disk Utility. I go through the steps and just as the copying sequence starts I get an error message that the Operation is not Allowed. It's a Western Digital drive, the WG guys said to reformat the new drive with a single partition but that was all they suggested...so I did but it didn't help.
The on-line Apple Expert didn't think I could copy it over and have it pick-up where the last backup stopped.
I am manually copying the files to the new drive to see if that works.
    Any other suggestions?

Your profile says you are using a G5, so I assumed...
You also didn't say if you are using a USB or Firewire connection, and if they are connected directly to the Mac instead of a hub.
I've had many problems with the WD drives and firewire, even after updating the firmware from their support site. USB hasn't been a problem, but I hate wasting the firewire port.
I also use SuperDuper, but I have read that CCcloner can do a block copy that works for troublesome clones. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=379017&page=3

  • I need a new power management board for MacBook Pro.   The AC 7000 chip is blown from power serge.  Where can I get one in Fiji?

Where can I get my power management board repaired ...replace the AC7000 chip ( that now has a little hole in it from a power serge ) or replaced in Fiji?

Actually, this is how I do my projects   . . .  I pull together all the assets  (video clips, stills, graphics) and tag them in a database.  Then, I can pull them into various segments.   I learned the ctrl+m five years ago when it was suggested on the old forum by some guy named named Steve Grisetti.
Example  - - -  I've done multiple soccer videos.  There are maybe 16 players on a team...  each is a tag.   There are great headers  . . . that's  a tag . . . don't forget awesome defensive plays  . . .  tag.   A tag for screwups / funny.    A tag for regular season play, a tag for post-season playoffs, etc.
This allows you to build it as you go.   So, as you start to compile a season end video, it's relatively simple to pull content.    Oops, you review the segments and see that one kid's hardly included... select the tag with their name and you can pull in a few more clips.   If you're documenting a season, you can see how the database is coming along and determine you need more footage of certain situations and then adjust the shooting priorities at the next couple games, etc.
As you build the collection, possible themes come...  perhaps a song or two that might add an element or tie things together.
SO...  goal is to assemble a collection of decent and tight clips  (leaving room for handles on each).  Tossing out all the superferlous stuff.    In shooting a 90 minute soccer game, there can be times when I end up with only  ten minutes of visually interesting stuff.
I'm also compiling content to be used in a video for a cool company here in Seattle.   Different thing altogether, but will take a similar apporach (fewer digital assets, however).
I don't usually take assets from one project and put onto another  . . .  especially when doing youth sports, this could create issues.

  • Firewire or USB for Audio interface on powerbook

    For a Powerbook G4 667 mhz, 768 MB RAM , 2 USB, 1 FW
What's better, FW audio interface and USB external hard drive, or the opposite? Thanks

I find that I have no problems on my PB using my hard drive and my interface daisychained. Obviously it depends on how fast the FW port is too - I imagine on yours it will be FW400. FWIW, I can get 8 streams of audio on to my LaCie with no probs at all, and can run a good number of tracks off it. My processor gives in before my drive...
But it's right, the best combo to go for it 2 FW ports, and USB ain't great for audio streaming with multiple channels.

    Dear Tomica
Much older notebook models are not supported for WXP so for me there is no sense to install old and not supported OS. OK you have probably your reasons for this but to get is fully installed with all drivers for me sounds like mission impossible.
Many people can be happy that newest notebooks are offered with Win7 support.
Out of curiosity but which WXP version have you installed? Which service pack version?

  • I upgraded all of my iWork apps and now I can't open some of my old files.  I get a message that says I need a newer version.  Same for all three iWork apps.

I've checked all of the version numbers, and the latest versions are installed but most of my old files can't be read.  Tried restarting, etc, but nothing works.

    Gary,
Thanks.  After posting that problem, I discovered that my upgrade of iWork did not replace my old versions, and some of my links started up the old versions.  When I looked at version numbers, I saw the new ones.  My links now go to the new versions and all seems to be OK.
