Need a new router

Hello,
My current Linksys has died and I need to replace it and have considered the Extreme (802.11N) but I have several concerns and feel that this may be the best place to get my questions answered.
I have read about people having issues writing to a disk connected to the router, the speeds are very slow. Is this still a current issues or has it been resolved with an update?
Will I have issues connecting a Nintendo Wii or a wireless Xbox360 to the net work?
Has there been any issues with security on the router being comprised?
I also have an older laptop with a Linksys 802.11b card, will I be able to connect to the extreme with that card?
I like the idea of connecting a hard drive and printers to the router, has anyone had issues hooking up more then one printer?
Thanks,
Jason

bukweet222, Welcome to the discussion area!
Disk access is never going to be "fast" when you have USB 2 and wireless networking involved.
Will I have issues connecting a Nintendo Wii or a wireless Xbox360 to the net work?
Others have connected.
Has there been any issues with security on the router being comprised?
No
I also have an older laptop with a Linksys 802.11b card, will I be able to connect to the extreme with that card?
Yes but the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will need to be configured to operate in an 802.11b compatible mode. Also the 802.11b clients will slow down the speed of the wireless network.

  • Do I need a new router or an extender

I have a new HP laptop and am using a Netgear N   WnR 2000 v2 wireless router that is about 2 years old. Everything is fine except in one bedroom. Most of the time i get 2 to 4 bars which is fine. However there are times mostly at night when the signal drops or drops to 1 bar. It seems to be worse when neighbors wireless is showing on my network My router is on one end. of the house and the bedroom is on the other end There are several walls between the two.. The main problem is streaming movies (Netflix etc}. Do I need a new router or  a range extender. I am cosidering the netgear universal extender.Wwill a dual band router  take care of my situation. I am not real pc savvy so plain answers are best
    Thanks

I'd go with a new router because its about the same price as an extender. I'd recommend a dual band router from Cisco, this one in particular.

We should have them readily available at our local store in your area. If not, we can do an online order or an order that allows you to pay at one store and pick up at a store that has it in stock.
    I hope this helps.

  • I need a new router for my MacBook Pro, OS 10.9.3

Need a new router for OS 10.9.3 and found that Linksys E2500 is not compatible. Any suggestions for a moderately priced router that will work for a 2300 square foot home and patio? Thanks!

It depends on what your idea of moderately priced is... however, I would go with the 6th generation Apple AirPort Extreme -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/ME918LL/A/airport-extreme?fnode=4d.
It's a joy of a router and so simple to configure with the AirPort Utility. Unlike some routers, where the setup takes a network genius to configure and maintain, you can access all the settings you need through the utility. I've had dozens of routers in my lifetime but the 6th generation AirPort Extreme beats them all, hands down, and is well worth the extra money that it may cost. It's also 'future-proof,' so if you buy a machine that utilizes 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology, you'll be set.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

  • 1.5 -3.0 Mbps Wifi?  Do I need a new router?

My online cable service says they deliver 15 Mbps.
My cat5 LAN speed tests show 11-14 Mbps.
I have an older 802.11B router.
If a B router does up to 11mbps why would my iPhone
test in the 1.5 - 3.0 Mbps range when I'm holding the phone
6" away from the router antenna?
My house has cat5 everywhere so until now I haven't had a need for wan.
Thinking about getting the iPad 2 (next month?) and was hoping for better wireless speed then what my iPhone is showing.
Is it my router? Should I get a G or N?
If my modem is limited to 15mbps what's the point of getting
    a G router doing 54mbps or N doing 100mbps?

One thing to keep in mind, most older routers advertise their speeds as "half duplex" speeds, which means that you get the advertised 11Mbps combined upload & download speeds (one way at a time). IIRC, the newer 802.11n routers do support full duplex meaning that they can get 130Mbps (or faster) download and upload concurrently.
I also remember hearing about a report that someone actually benchmarked their router's performance on their 95 Mbps connection. They were not getting anywhere near that speed when using their "cheap router" and when they replaced it with a full PC running the free Astaro security software, they got much, much better performance, to the point which they actually upgraded the network cards in their PC's to take advantage of the full performance of their new gateway & internet connection.
In short, a new router may improve your performance some, but it will probably still limit your full capacity more than you expect.

  • Am I going to need a new router, or can I upgrade my existing model ?

    Hi
I wonder if someone could help me out here, I have a Edimax AR 7084gA 802.11g wireless router which is 4 years old, it has been running my husbands Acer Aspire 9300 laptop running Linux Ubuntu (and previously Vista) for 4 years and, and my MacBook running Leopard and now Snow Leopard for over 3 years without any connectivity problem.
We both have a 3g iPod Touch now running on iOS4, since the purchase of both iPods we have been having trouble with both of them loosing internet connection, we open Safari and are told the content is loading but nothing happens, three bars are showing for the signal most of the time. To combat the problem we are having to re-set the network settings a couple of times a day and this solves the problem straight away, and then it works just fine for hours.
We have used both iPods in several hotels and for a week in our sons house in Germany, and have never once had an internet problem, or had to re set the network settings.
The questions I have are, do I need to do something with the existing router ? I have looked on the Edimax website for firmware updates and the latest for this model are from June 2008 and the download seems to be for Windows only, or do I need to think about upgrading the router to a more powerful 802.11n model such as Apples Airport Extreme.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, the problem is not a great one, but a niggle that I would rather sort out as we will soon be buying an iPad and I would like to get it sorted before then.
    Many Thanks.

I'd get a new router. Your existing router appears to have problems, is 4 years old and is no longer supported by the manufacturer. Since you can get a good wireless-G router for around $35 would be the cheapest approach (e.g., Netgear WGR614v10 at Staples).
If money is no object, you could move to a wireless-N router like the Airport Extreme. If you do get a 802.11n wireless router make sure it is one that implements the final version of the 802.11n standard and not a draft version.

  • My friend needs a new router and their while family uses PC's.

So as you can tell from my topic, my friend is upgrading his router, and they only have PC based computer, and I suggested he should get an airport extreme. With the new beamforming technology and the reviews, i figured u cant really go wrong. However, I was reading online that you can't set up one of the new airport extremes without an Apple device, is this true? And if you can install one without a mac, would an airport extreme  be a good choice for him, or should he stick to netgear or products like that.

A "new" AirPort Exteme cannot be configured using a PC....but could be configured using an iPad or iPhone.
If your friend does not have an iPad or iPhone, then you should not recommend an AirPort Extreme for him/her.

  • I need a new router

My router is 8 years old and they say that it should be free to replace it. I've been searching around the website and I can not find anywhere where I can order a new one or a phone number to call for one.

  • Do I Need a New Router?

    WRTP54G,
2 days ago the wired ports on my router stopped working, no lights no connection. I have tried all different types of resets but still nothing.
My wireless still works, and my Vonage phone still works,(Built in to router).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe the Ports are dead, try a few steps :
    1) Use just one ethernet cable, connect one end of the cable to port1 of WRTP54G and the other end of the same cable to the Internet Port on the WRTP54G router itself...Both the lights should lit, else change the cable and do the same connection...If not light is lit, ethernet port is dead...
    2) Hard reset your router : Press and hold the reset button for 1 minute...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 1 minute and re-connect the power cable...Now see if you could locate any ethernet light n your router...
    3) Make sure Local Area Connection on your Computer is Enabled....

  • Lloyd Segal in need of new router suggestions

    Hello-
I had a cisco router for a long time in my office that stopped working yesterday. I was really pleased with my router, so wanted to buy another Cisco model.
I have ~ 6 or so computers that I'd like to connect to the router in the office. Can anyone help recommend a good model for me to purchase?
    Thank you,

  • Can I use an ethernet switch to add a "pogoplug" device to my Airport express router? Or do I need a different router?

I have an airport express router and decided to get a "pogoplug device" (cloud service to store files etc.). It requires to be connected to router per ethernet but I realized too late there is only one ethernet connection in the router. A friend suggested I get an ethernet switch but it still doesn't work...Do I need a new router?

Then, unfortunately, no as the single Ethernet port of the AX needs to be connected to the Ethernet port of your Broadband modem.
One option is to get another AX, and then, configure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. It would connect to the first AX by wireless, and then, you can connect the PogoPlug to it.

  • Do I need an ethernet switch or new router for IP camera setup with old Airport Express

    Hello,
I am trying to setup a third party Foscam IP camera to my network so that I can ultimately use it as a baby monitor, and am having some difficulty.  I currently still have an old Airport Express (with one ethernet port only).  This is preventing me from setting up the initial camera because I don't have another ethernet port to plug it in to on the router.  I am wondering if I can just buy an ethernet switch and have it "split" the ethernet from my modem to both the camera and the Airport (I do need to check with my ISP provider if they give me two separate IP address... but if they do, would this work?).
I am fairly sure however, that my ISP provider (comcast) only provides one IP for my account.  Does this mean I would have to buy a new router altogether with more than one ethernet port on it or one with a WAN port?  Would I, in this case, have to plug the modem into the WAN port on the router, and then the camera to one of the ethernet ports on the router?
I consider myself fairly tech savy, but when it comes to routers, IPs, LAN, WAN, etc. I get a bit lost.  This has been creating quite a headache for me and any help would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but this won't work as the modem expects only a single device ... either a computer or a router to be connected to it. Unless your modem is actually a combination modem & router or gateway device, then you would need a different router to solve your networking problem.

  • Do I need a new modem or a router or neither?

I realise this may dovetail with other posts but I need one or two things to be clarified... Just got airport express which I haven't used before. My modem is ADSL with a USB connection so it's no good for connecting to the airport; I presume I need a new modem with ethernet connection (yes? no?) or, as PC users keep telling me (wary of taking any advice from them) I need a modem router. Can anyone help to shed light on this as I don't know enough yet about wireless connection. Thanks

Just to add a bit to Franks post as to why you would choose a modem or router.
The advantage of an Ethernet modem being that no additional configuration is necessary on the Airport Express and all the features such as iChat AV will work without complicated port forwarding etc. But steer Clear of the D-Link DSL-300T as it is currently incompatible with the latest Airport Firmware.
The Advantage of a router is that they typically have multiple Ethernet ports so as well as wireless computers you can connect Ethernet equipped devices at the same time such as computers, networked printers and game consoles. The problem is that you then need to configure the Airport with "Distribute IP Addresses" switched off and you will then typically need to fiddle about with port forwarding in the router to get things like iChat AV to work properly. Also setting up WDS to use a second Airport to repeat the wireless signal becomes more difficult with this configuration as the Apple WDS system expects "Distribute IP addresses" to be switched on.

  • Need suggestions for new router running mac with eyeconnect, and ps3

We have the latest version of leopard on our 24" imac and we have eyeconnect ver. 1.6 we need to buy a new router and i want one that is very easy(like plug it in and walk away)to use. The main priority for this is not having problems streaming media to our ps3 via eyeconnect or medialink. Wireless or wired whatever would be the best i have never actually had an airport only linksys and have been unhappy with most of them any advice welcome about the router or getting eyeconnect to be recognized by the ps3 once its hooked up. Thank you

What I have in my house is an Airport Extreme with it's two (n,b or g) wireless connections for older non-N wireless connections. I then got a D-Link DGS-2208 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Desktop Green Ethernet Switch 8 for fast subnet sharing in the house. This speed is important for HD video sharing for from the external I have connected to the USB2 port on My Extreme.
Note: My Extreme is in "Bridged mode" because it sits behind a wired router that acts as the DHCP server.
Getting a router with Gig Ports and and USB2 port for an external to store/share files (videos mainly) to all my networked devices. The USB2 port on the Extreme was the deciding factor for the extra cost and this handy port making any USB2 external into a networked drive. Plus my older iPhone 3GS only does G it was a no-brainier because of the dual wireless.
The GIG switch is future proofing yourself for the years to come.
Plus I called the extreme but it is a Time Capsule that is just and extreme with a built-in disk.
One more thing: Use CAT6 cables in your network.

  • Help needed choosing a new router

    Hi there,
Our company is in need of a new router for internet traffic. Because I'm having trouble selecting a model, I would like to ask for your help on this one. Our situation is as follows:
     - Primary internet connection is a 60/10 Mbps cable connection.
     - Backup internet connection is an ADSL connection (not normally in use)
     - Currently our old DrayTek Vigor 2910 is incapable of processing more than 25 Mbps.
     - We have approximately 35 users working in our office.
     - Traffic primarily consists of web browsing, e-mail and VOIP phone calls.
When the need arises, we would like to have the option of adding an additional cable connections for more bandwidth.
Additionally, we would like to replace our OpenVPN server with Cisco VPN on this new router, which should handle about 5 users during daytime and 10 outside of office hours.
I have narrowed it down to a 2900-series router because of the flexibility provided by the EHWIC slots. I have found the following models:
    Model
    WAN performance
    Realistic performance
    Cisco 2901
    25 Mbps
    167 Mbps
    Cisco 2911
    35 Mbps
    181 Mbps
    Cisco 2921
    50 Mbps
    246 Mbps
    Cisco 2951
    75 Mbps
    297 Mbps
These performance numbers confuse me as to which model to choose.

Do i need to uninstall netgear router program if I want to install a new router program?

no, in fact, it's better to update it instead of installing the new one separately so that you don't loose your bookmarks and such.
To update, open firefox and go to Help and chose About Firefox. you should see an update button there.
