Need a quick bit of help using Terminal

I have something simple I want to do with Terminal but I am obviously doing it wrong!
I want to change the format of screen grabs (I have to do a ton of them at work and I'm tired of re-saving PNGs as JPGs).
I've read I need to type the line into Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
So I did. Then I logged out and logged back in to my computer (just for good measure? I dunno). It's still saving my screen grabs as PNGs.
It's got to be something simple that I'm doing wrong. Thanks in advance for any help!

As an easy way to change the user interface aspect of Finder to save
screenshots as jpg instead of png, I've used OnyX from Titanium
Software, a free running interface utility that can so several things.
{Not that I got it to do that, but found the extra options it allows can
be of some use, outside of the chance you could really mess up
the OS if you mis-use some aspects of this kind of utility.}
While there is a way, & someone had posted how to change it
in terminal (in single user mode, etc) I do not remember all that
because I use OnyX for general maintenance every so often &
have it in my computers. There is a version for your Mac's OS...

Hi folks
I don't use iMovie too much, but can usually figure out the program enough to suit my needs... except today, I can't for the life of me figure out how to lop off the end of the video which is dead space!
I have 5min22 of content, with a 5min13 song. However, there is over a minute of dead space hanging out at the end of the timeline viewer. I tried to hover the mouse over the right side of the clip viewer to find some kind of editing ability that would let me squeeze in on the content and get rid of that extra minute of dead space. Can't seem to find it, though...
I'm TOTALLY missing something, right?!

Need a little bit of help with substring...

Im very new at java programming, and need a bit of help with a problem:
Here is what I have:

Scanner scan = new Scanner (System.in);
stringy = scan.nextLine();
Now I want to split the string "stringy" like this: h:hi:hip:hipp:hippo
I know this uses substring, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Need help using terminal to back up failed HDD

The stock HDD on my MacBook has developed S.M.A.R.T. errors and is on its way out. I need to get all of my pictures and documents backed up before everything gets completely lost. I was finally able to get the thing fired up, and everything seems to somewhat work, except for Finder. I opened up terminal and attempted copying folders to my external HDD (1 TB Western Digital MyBook) but i can't seem to get it to work.
I'm not sure if it is best to copy just the files I need (such as the.whole Documents and Pictures folders), or to do a complete backup. What would be the best solution for when I install the new HDD and reload everything?
Can anyone provide me with any advice or the line(s) of code that ill need to get this done, starting from when i open Terminal?

Need help using terminal to delete files

I left my camera to download a ton of photos, but now my hard drive is full and the computer froze up with an error message that the hard drive was full. I shut down last night and can't startup now. I've been trying to figure out how to get into terminal to delete the photo files, but can't figure it out.
I can get into terminal using the option key at startup, but don't know what to do next.
the files are in a folderi n the users/me/Pictures folder. I could just delete the whole folder if someone could help me.
Also tried starting up in target mode, but wouldn't. Also couldn't start up from an install disk. When I try, it just flashes from the apple logo to the null symbol.

The last time I put together a website was with Frontpage, so
this is the first time i've attempted to do serious work in DW.
I'm currently at a stage where i've done the website layout
in PS, have sliced it up in IR and am editing it in DW. I've also
done a Flash menu that i'm trying to integrate into DW.
I've run into a number of problems though:-
1. I can't seem to move the images around in DW - the center

text will go) and i've tried to delete that and put it back in as a
background image. But when I do that, the image that's directly
below it (a grey bar for the bottom of the website) get's pushed
up. I can't seem to move any of the images around. Is there a way
of locking all of the images, bar the one that's currently
selected, that I don't want to immediately move around (e.g. with
different layers in PS)?
2. When I try to import the Flash menu into DW, I can't move
it around either. It just sits in the spot it was inserted in.
Additionally, I can't find a way of giving the Flash menu a
transparent background. I just need the Flash buttons to sit over
the background image. Is that something I need to correct in Flash
or can I do that in DW?
3. When I eventually get the Flash menu sitting nice and
pretty on top of the background image, how do I link the Flash
buttons to the different pages?
4. How do I insert a pdf d/l function into the website?
There'll be a tonne of documents on there (it's for a small
accounting firm) and the client wants the ability to offer some of
the documents as pdf downloads.
Any help/advice'd concerning these issues would be greatly
appreciated, thanks.

While this is not surprising, it's a VERY bad start. One
should never use
HTML written by a graphics program for 'serious' work. It's
fragile, and
poorly formed, and will break at the slightest provocation.
I'd guess that
in excess of 20% of all the posts here are directly related
to the use of
such HTML.
In addition, Flash menus are bad business. You create a
monster for
yourself, since DW will not manage the links in that menu, in
the event that
files are named or moved from their current location. They
are also
inaccessible to those using screen assistive devices, and are
just downright
bad.

You are suffering from a well-known disease, called "trying
to build HTML
pages without knowing HTML", often also called "trying to use
an HTML
authoring program as if it were Microsoft Word". I'm not
trying to be
snarky here. You will just need to learn some HTML. When you
do this, you
will quickly discover that HTML doesn't allow you to just put
things on the
page as if it were a graphics program, or a printed page
layout program.

See above. Also, to make Flash transparent is a trick. You
can use the
Flash
wmode parameter (however, Safari does not support this
properly!).

You have to do this in Flash, not HTML - another good reason
not to use
Flash Buttons.

Zip them, and link to the zipped document as you would to any
other file.
You can force a download, but that would require
server-scripting that I
don't think you are ready for yet.

Need to delete /usr/bin without using terminal

In a bit of a bind.
All how-tos detailing how to delete or alter the /usr/bin file involve terminal, but terminal won't work b/c of this error
login: PAM Error (line 396): System error
login: Could not determine audit condition
[Process completed]
I alterred something in usr/bin and need to change it but must do so with some other program other than terminal (altering that usr/bin file will then fix terminal).
Kind of a chicken or egg problem.

I take it you're no Unix hand, so I hope you otherwise know what you're doing since deleting /usr/bin will remove important files used by the operating system.
Boot into single-user mode. At the prompt enter:
/sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
Next enter:
/sbin/mount -uw /
This will make the filesystem writeable. You can navigate by entering:
cd /usr/bin
This will take you to the /usr/bin directory. Note that in single-user mode you are root. Much damage can be done if you aren't careful. When you finish enter:
reboot

Need a tiny bit of help please!

Hey guys,
I have a full set of renders for a character. At this time I
have a 3 point stand and an 8 point walk motion. Basically 3
separate images for standing and 8 separate images for walking.
I want to use AS3 and have the character standing and doing
the 3 point animation. Then I want to make him walk via user
control with the 8 walk images.
To this point I have searched everywhere for a tutorial on
how to do this but all I end up finding is for artists and how to
draw the animations. But like I said, I have the animation images,
I just need to learn how to implement them into flash.
In the end to learn this, all I want to do is to properly
encorperate the images into flash so that I can do a test movie and
have the character doing his stand animation and then when I press
left or right have him do the walk animation. From there I will go
onto collision and whatever I feel like learning at that time.
Right now, just getting a standing animation and a user controlled
walk would be great.
Could anybody point me towards a good tutorial on how to do
this?

A lot of the avi files made on Windows machines use variable bit rate mp3 audio, which QT will not play. One workaround is to use this freeware Windows video processor to change the format of the avi audio.
VirtualDub
Open the avi in VirtualDub, set the video menu to Direct Stream Copy and set the audio to Full Processor Mode. Then choose either uncompressed audio in the compression item in Audio Menu or IMA audio. Now open the avi and then use Save as Avi in the File menu. The video will be passed through with no change to the new avi but the audio will be changed to the new compression setting. The two compression types I mentioned will play in QT Player with no problem. You will need to have the video codec for the avi in Video for Windows form. If you can play the avi in Windows Media Player you have the right codec already.

Nokia 720 Problems - Need a little bit of help her...

Few Problems with a 10 day nokia 720:-
1. Earphone volume while in a call - I can't change the earphone volume while in a call. This is very frustating. Is this a problem with my nokia 720 or is this a general issue with all 720.
2. Microphone doesn't work in certain directions, while in a sleeping pose or sometimes sitting. This has never happened to me in around 6-7 phones that I have used. Please tell me if this is a problem for my phone or device issue.
3. When I switch off mobile data connection, my overall mobile connection is lost after some time. Also I am experiencing too frequent call drops, Also my network just goes out of the picture, it just doesn't detect network. Facing a lot of issues with this,
4. Sometimes it zooms out and doesn't come back to its original position. I don't know what is the problem with this. I have to restart my phone to get back in normal position.
5. My bookmyshow app doesn't work after the update [this can be ignored ]
I expected more out of my nokia lumia but hard to say if the problems are with my phone only or for all nokia 720. Hoping for some help in this forum.
Also please tell me if nokia will change my device if this is a problem with only my device and not every device. Please help.

the screen zoom problem and mic problem is there in many phones.
hv not been able to sort mic /call drop issue, bt for zoom
the phone zooms by double tap on any screen, this is a feature in ease of access. go to settings->ease of access->screen magnifier->off.

so i got my ipod about 3 weeks ago or so and i was diconnecting it right the entire time but i left in to charge one night and my sister decided she need that port for her camera and pulled it out incorrectly at first the screen was frozen on do not disconnect but i got past that..now i have nothing on it when i go to put my music on it i get the message "The iPod "IPOD" cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found" is there anyway to fix that?????? Thanks

Need a little bit of help

Hi, i'm trying to make my java files runable from other machines and using the jar utility to do it. I have 10 files that get added to my jar file, and they are as follows:
Tester.class, Deck.class, Suit.class, SavitchIn.class, Player.class Card.class, Pips.class, CardSet.class, Hand.class, BlackJackHand.class
I am using this command to jar them:
D:\ITAS186T\Project1>jar cvf Tester.jar Tester.class Deck.class Suit.class SavitchIn.class Player.class Card.class Pips.class CardSet.class Hand.class BlackJackHand.class
my public static void main is in Tester.class so I modified the manifest to include Main-Class: Tester.class
now when i try to run it with this command: java -jar Tester.jar
i get this error:
Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from
Tester.jar
Any ideas?

my problem is basically the amount of duplicates i have in my library and the fact that i am unable to delete them properly. My whole library seems to be duplicated at least once sometimes twice.... and i was hoping there might be a program or technique to organise the library instead of going through the whole thing one by one?
After owning a 1st gen Nano for many years i have just purchased a touch and want to get it loaded up. However after a hard drive crash and then a recovery disc upload, another nano being synced etc etc my library is a real jumble!

Also, sorting by the Date Added will often group things together, for instance if you dragged a whole folder into itunes one day and it made many of the duplicates happen - they will all be grouped together for easier deletion

Nokia 7373 I need a quick bit of advice

I ordered a Nokia 7373 from my cataloge on the 02.03.07 after been promised it since the 12th it has arrived today. I opened the boy put in the sim card and the battery, went to turn the phone on .... nothing! So I put the phone on charge the instruction book states it might take a few min for the charging notice to come up.
I left the phone and went and picked up the kids from school over an hour later still no charging notice. Tryed to turn phone on..... nothing tryed again........ lit up vibrated stayed on Nokia start up screen then turned it self off. Do I Just need to let it charge more or am I going to have to send it back and wait another month. Any advise would be great.

I am ready to throw this phone, I think I am going to have to send it back. I have managed to get the charge to show again but i dont want to move the phone incase it stops charging again. I have tryed to turn it on I got nokia start up white screen saying nokia then it goes all white then it turns its self off. I have had a lot of mobile phones I only bought my last one at christmas I get board easy. I have donated it to my husband who has had about 3 mobile phones since we have been together 12yrs ago. bless him. I just dont think I am ment to have this chew on I think it needs looking at so I am going to cry as I am never without a mobile.

they all test fine in browser preview but I'm wondering how
