I have recently deployed a 3-tier **proprietary** application that:
- has a thick-client installed on a Windows Vista client machine
- Oracle 10g Enterprise edition version 10.2.0.1.0 installed on a server running Red Hat enterprise Linux. This is a very
cut-down version of Linux, only accessible through SSH (or by directly plugging in a keyboard+monitor into the linux box). It
does not have any GUI/windowing mechanism installed on it at all (so for example there is no 'xclock' installed in this
linux). Also the oracle server software installed here does NOT have Oracle Enterprise Manager installed.
I have complete access to the server and can log in as sysdba via SSH (simply login to a SSH terminal and then type in
'sqlplus "/ as sysdba" - that lets me in as the SYSDBA.
Problem: I want to use a graphical tool like Oracle Ent. Manager to look 'inside' the DB. But I cannot install anything or
play around much with the linux box, but I can do whatever I want to the client vista machine.
Attempts so far:
Looking around inside the installation on vista client machine I discovered a folder:
"<xxx>\3rdParty\Oracle10g" which contained files:
- tnsnames.ora
- sqlnet.ora
- sqlplus.exe
When I ran this sqlplus.exe on a CMD prompt it said:
Error 6 Initialising Sql*Plus

this vista machine and connect to the oracle running on the linux box.
On the vista box I also did:set ORACLE_HOME=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1
Now I ran the sqlplus.exe (on the vista box) again and it came up with a login prompt. Problem is I dont have a
login/password; what I plan to do is to create a user by logging in as sysdba on the server, and grant all access to him, and
then log into Oracle Ent Manager as this user from the windows machine.
However, here is another problem: if I do 'tnsping <my_db_name>' it says:
TNS-12541: TNS:no listener
I suspect this is because of some security setting in this application OOTB.
The entry in tnsnames.ora setting is correct, as it was done by the client install program (not manually). It contains:
PROTOCOL=TCPS, and PORT=2484.
There is also a 'wallet' folder on the client machine under 'Oracle10g' folder.
Finally the sqlnet.ora on client machine contains:

All I would like to do is to be able to connect to the oracle server with tools I am familiar with (like OEM, TOAD etc.).
This stuff is quite outside of my understanding, so if you can provide any insight it'll be much appreciated.

You could try syncing the contacts with yahoo or google contacts, then sync them to the iPhone. Or, export the contacts and then import them into one of the aforementioned servicse, or iCloud, then sync to the phone.

So just to be clear, when you say "just bought" how long ago was that? Is it on this new iPhone that you had pictures, texts, etc that you want? Were you backing up to iCloud or onto iTunes?
This may not help for everything but if you go to iCloud.com and log in, are you able to find your pictures there?

So. As always, it's about iTunes - as Apple is the most inconvenient corporation ever founded. Anyway! I've had this problem for about 6 months and haven't bothered to ask anyone. I've restored the computer numerous times and tried to fix the issue with help from other nonsensical forums. The problem is that 'apple mobile device service' is eating up a large amount of CPU, and therefore tends to make the computer run like a log. I have uninstalled it before but then iTunes won't recognize my iPod - funnily enough. As well as this, iTunes won't connect to the store? However, it doesn't say it's not, it just doesn't load. It states that it is 'accessing iTunes store', but it's not. I'm running all of this on a windows 7 Acer extensa 5235 - just in case that helps. It probably won't, but you guys are clever, right? I mean, I could probably ask you to peel an orange for me, and you'd do it without even physically touching it. Just with the power of your omnipotent minds. Anyway yeah, if anyone can help on this one, would be much appreciated.

Did you try a search of the forums for similar issues? Doing so would have revealed multiple similar issues with valid troubleshooting, saved you time, and saved those that have read that crap from being subject to your rambling psychosis.
FYI, in the future, get to the point and cut the crap when asking for help.
Oh, completely uninstall iTunes and reinstall the current version of iTunes.

I would like to know the answer to that one. I realized this was happening just after upgradeing my iOS to 6. Then when I looked up my purchase date, I was about 5 days past my one year warranty. So I'm dead in the water. Apple will replace the battery, but it will be about $80+. I took it to the Apple store, and they checked a bunch of stuff, but said that it seemed ok. I'm debating getting a battery for a more reasonable price off of ebay. But if it's the iOS thats draining the battery, then I'm not going to be able to help it. I wish I knew a better way to tell if its the battery, the phone, or the iOS.

REALLY need help on this one... befw11s4 w/ Xbox 360

My system 2 PCs hard wired. 2 Printers wireless. Running XP. Also have Directv DVR and Xox 360. Everything used to function correctly. Now DVR and XBox wont connect to BEFWS11 V2. I have reset everything and started from scratch. I have also disconnected everything from the LAN expect PC1 and Xbox. The router appears to give it and IP address (shows up in DHCP table and on Xbox) BUT 1- when I ping the address from my PC no response. 2 - when I run the test from XBox is says it gets IP address but can't see my computer. I see very similar behavior from the DVR. I did not change anything drastic that I am aware of. I am at a loss - any experts out there. I have turned off firewalls - no help. This used to work and now does not. On the Xbox I can't get either media sharing or Live to work. I can get ping responses from 2 PCs and 2 printers on the netwrok, but not Xbox...
I am stmped - any help out there?

Try assigning Ip addresses manually to the devices and check if you are able to communicate or not.

Error 1603: Need some help with this one

When installing iTunes I first get an error box saying
"Error 1406: Could not write value to key \Software\classes\.cdda\OpenWithList\iTunes.exe. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."
The second one (after I click on Ignore on the last box) I get it this one:
"Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation.
Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information"
Strange thing is that I do have full access to my computer (or atleast in all other cases I have had since I am the only one with an account on it).
I have done my best in trying to solve it myself but I'm running out of ideas. I have downloaded latest versions from the website and tried installing Quicktime separately. I have also tried removing Quicktime using add/or remove programs though I just I didn't dare to take full removal because it said something about system files.
Anyway I really need some help with this, anyone got any ideas?

Show us what you have, there isn't anything here that isn't easily done the same as it would be on paper.

Startup Screen Pixelated - I really need help on this one.

15" Macbook Pro - Spring 2011
My startup screen sometimes would be pixelated with the Apple logo and then would go to grey screen and do nothing... then I would be forced to shut down and power it up again. On two occasions, the bootup would have stripes on it. See photo.
And then the occasional lockup while working on something would happen and I was forced to power it down. This would happen periodically and not every day.
So... I had this problem a couple of months ago (for several months) and the Apple store kept my Macbook Pro for a few days and said there were reported no problems. They were clueless as to why I had the above screen show. They said... maybe it is a bad installation of the OS and that it got corrupted.
So a couple of months later and I am now I am having the same issues again. But this time, I had bought another HD and installed Mountain Lion on it... and I have it connected via USB. I had used it several times before last night when I held the option key down to choose my startup disk to be the new HD via USB. Then I get this pixelated screen again, but this time it was at the startup disk screen. See Photo.
It's like you have a car problem and you take it in to the shop only for it to not malfunction... I really need some guidance on this one. My AppleCare warranty just expired (was valid during my visit to the Apple Store)... And I am not a happy camper... I always use macs... and I teach everyone who has them how to use them.
So to be clear... This is the same internal HD that I had when I took it to the Apple Store. (Lion)
I installed Mountain Lion on a new HD connected via USB and have worked off of it for a few days with no problems, choosing it as a startup disk.
Last night booting with the option key held down I get this pixelated screen, whereas before it was never pixelated holding the option key down.
So I have a couple of questions:
Is the Boot Screen above run by the motherboard or the HD? If it is the MB, then I need to talk with Apple again.
Does anyone have any clue what is happening?I have reset my PRAM and switched out my RAM.
If this screen is run by the same HD in the laptop, then maybe I just need to take it out....?
I would appreciate any genius expertise. I am a little frustrated that I am having this problem and cannot narrow it down. I use my laptop extensively for presentation, graphics, and teaching and now I am afraid of it.

Your 10.7 EFI may be corrupted.
The way a Mac works is EFI is updated via Software Update, it's written to the OS X partiiton, then gets loaded into the hidden EFI partition and read/used upon the second boot.
So it takes two reboots to load EFI and goes into the EPROM boot memory.
My terminolgy might be inaccurate as I didn't take a Apple course for certification, but I understand a little about the boot stage from my Linux on Mac experience.
If your 10.7 EFI is corrupted on one drive, and you've got a 10.8 clean EFI on another, then it takes two reboots from the same drive to clear and use it's EFI into boot memory.
So if you've booted 10.7, then option booted to use 10.8, it could be the corrupted 10.7 EFI still in memory.
The way to fix the corrupted 10.7 EFI partition is a total wipe and format of the entire drive to catch the hidden EFI parition, then install 10.7 fresh and update.
Of course Apple made this difficult with Recovery Partition which won't allow a complete drive erase.

There is also a way to install EFI firmware from a cd, however I don't know where it goes, reboot the 10.7 drive twice anyway

Since your out of warrantly, you might want ot just go ahead and repalce the internal drive and see if that fixes the problem.

When I first purchased my iPod nano a little over two years ago, I was able to download my itunes which amounted to about 400 songs. The capacity of this ipod is 4Gb. I restored it and downloaded 46 songs. It shows that I have only 1.5 Gb left. This doesn't make sense to me because it is much less than what I had before. Even with 400 songs, I had about 1.5 Gb left when it was new. It seems to me something is wrong with the ipod as it doesn't seem to be compressing. Anyone have any ideas about this? Is there a program that I am able to download to solve this issue? Thank you for any help you can give.

Thanks for your response. I don't know what the bit rate is. When I first got the nano, I was able to download in compressed format. For some reason I am unable to do that now and the few songs I have eats up a lot of memory. I have the latest iTunes and I tried to look into the options to see if there was anything that indicated compression. I could not find it. I have tried resetting the nano and cleared everything out. I again tried to transfer my library and the indicator showed that I have used about 1.5Gb and leaves me about 1.7Gb. I only have 42 songs on my nano. I wont even have 100 songs which will use all the memory or 3.7Gb. I must be doing something wrong and that is why I am seeking help. This never used to be this way. Thanks for your response.

It crashes when I insert a record to Access's database. I remove the date data type then it runs fine. How to solve this date problem?

I wanted to get an advice on how to get in touch with the appropriate person at BT that could help with my situation.
I have tried telephone help, complaints by email and unfortunately still waiting for somebody from the customer services to help me out.
I have recently moved home. I contacted BT on 26th June to organise the line transfer to the new address. The date was set for 18th July. I also ordered line rental saver and paid for it over the phone. All went smooth, telephone and broadband was working fine at the new place, but on the 23rd July I was sent an email that "BT is sorry that I am leaving".
I thought it was a mistake, but the lady in the on-line chat said somebody stopped my service. Later she rang and left a message saying that I must have requested to move to another provider. Did not manage to speak to her again, but phoned the help line this time.
There a gentleman was trying to convince me that I called BT and cancelled my service on the 18th July and to him I was not a BT customer anymore. The truth is that I did not request to stop my service, anyway - why would I do that after paying for a year in advance. This has no logic, but because computer says so then he thinks I did it.
He also added that my account is a 'mess'. He then promised that somebody would get in touch to sort it out as my line rental was gone and my phone and internet could go off any minute.
I did not get any help. After that I wrote to them 3 email complaints to request assistance. They called and aknowledge they will help, but 3 weeks down the line nothing was done to explain the situation. Left the messages to the person from email complaints to ring me or email me -never happened.
Last week I got 2 emails welcoming me to BT and outlining the call plans that were diferent from each other and the one I agreed to on the 25th June. When I called help line 2 days ago a lady confirmed on which one I am on, but could not sort out the most annoying thing - the 'final' bill.
I was sent a bill for over 200 pounds due to premature termination of phone and broadband service , which I never ordered. They already took the money this week. My line saver is gone as well. So I am 360 pounds short. I aslo have no access to myBT to monitor my phone activity or make orders.They also did not send any confrimation of the call plan I am currently on.
It is a very annoying situation, because somebody at BT made an error and I am unable to get to anybody that could help. Everytime you call the help line you speak to somebody else and despite me thinking the email complaints would be the way forward they are not. Would appreciate some advice on how to tackle these issues: false accusations from them, inappropriate billing, problem with myBT.

dunno what happened but after updating to voodoo...the printer stoped printing...i try to print a test and all it does its start the printer and then its stops the job..my printer is a brother 2030...what went wrong? in 0.7.2 all worked just fine...help me with this one cause i really need it working...

Need some expert help on this one

My PPC 10.4.11 mac is running very very slow with plenty of disk space and when I try to verify permission, repair permissions etc. disk utility freezes up to the point where I have to cold shut off the computer. Issues started yesterday when a page in iweb became corrupt causing me to have to completely redesign my index page and then it started freezing up. Do I just need it do an achieve and install or is there something else I can do?

As your very expert help already mentioned, You must repair the HD.
If Disk Utility cannot do it then your best bets are DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

I am using my Nokia N70-1 for both of my personal and business matters.
This morning, I saw a warning on my phone regarding an operation it couldn't process:
It goes like this:
"Telephone: Not enough memory to perform operation. Delete some data first"
I checked the memory of my phone through its settings and saw that I already consumed all of its available memory which is 21MB.
I have no music tracks, videos, etc. on my phone.
Only messages and the phonebook.
I already deleted so many files this morning.
But the memory of the phone still indicates that there are no longer available memory space.
Now it started again to say to delete some data but everytime I try to delete some files, the warning message keeps on appearing and interfering the process.
I cannot delete the files.
Worst, I cannot accept and send messages.
What should I do?

You need to find out what is taking your memory up.
I would recommend that you power the phone down and take the battery out of the phone for 1 minute.
Put it back in and power the phone back up. *DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE*
Once the phone has powered up, access the Menu and go to the following location :
Menu->Tools->File Manager
The first bit you see at the top will have an icon of a phone - this represents the data you have stored on your phone.
Select Options->Memory details
and this will give you a breakdown of exactly what is taking up all the space on your phone. From here you should be able to access the relevant section of the phone to free up some space on your phone.
If for whatever reason you're unable to use the phone after powering it off and back on, then the fail safe way to get this working is to wipe your phone to the factory defaults which means that it will behave as if you had just taken out of the box when you bought it.
The downside to this is that you lose *ALL* the information you have stored on it - messages, contacts - the lot.

However please be aware that doing so will wipe ALL the data from your phone such as information in your calendar, contacts and so on.
You could try and save the information you currently have on your phone first by downloading PC Suite and backing your phone up - you can find PC Suite here :

Need Help on this one please

I'm a newbie so I hope I can explain my problem satisfactory. My problem at hand is that I have, lets say a (JFrame) main class that does most of the work, within this class I instantiated another class that extends JFrame and pass it a Vector. Within in this new JFrame the user can choose among multiple checkboxes which will be used to sort the Vector. Also, there are two buttons, one to close out without doing anything and the another to sort the array with the users choices. My problem is, how do I pass the sorted vector back to another method within the main class to be used? Thank you for your help in advance

Typically when you create an application it will contain a single JFrame. This is your main window and usually contains a menu, toolbar, etc. When you need additional information you would typically show a dialog. For example in Internet Explorer when you click on Tools / Internet Options you get a dialog which allows you to customize some options
Also, when the user presses the Sort button how will that call the one method
in the main JFrame I need to process the sorted vectorWhen you click the sort button you will have code that creates and displays the JDialog. Make this dialog "modal" so that execution in the main frame will be blocked until the dialog is closed. Then when the dialog closes code will continue executing after your dialog.setVisible(true), line of code in your action performed method.
The memory for the Vector is allocated in your JFrame when you create the Vector. Your main frame passes the Vector as a parameter to the JDialog. When the Vector is sorted your main frame stills has a reference to the Vector
